MASSES FOR THE WEEK

Page 4: SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 8, 2019 · 12/8/2019  · the bishop, imprinted there was Mary’s image! Her blue sash and the flower over her womb were traditional Aztec symbols

As the Sundays of Advent unfold the scriptures

shift focus from the final coming of the Lord to

his historical birth. Today’s scriptures blend the

two. Isaiah’s disillusionment with the kings of his

own day led him to envision an ideal king who

would rule with divine approval and be led by

divine wisdom. For centuries the Jewish people

anticipated the arrival of that Messiah, who

would usher in a blessed age when the whole

world would finally dwell in justice and peace.

After centuries of such growing expectation,

the preaching of John the Baptist about

the imminent arrival of the Messiah could not

help but provoke intense interest. The Baptist’s

message about preparation for “the one who is

coming” (Matthew 3:11) makes clear that Jesus

is, in fact, the long-awaited one who is ushering

in the new age foretold by Isaiah and all

the prophets.

How well Mary’s own words describe Juan

Diego: “God has cast down the mighty from

their thrones and lifted up the lowly” (Luke 1:52).

Through him, for the diverse peoples of

the Americas, indigenous and immigrant,

the Mother of God became known as their

Mother, too. Cuauhtlatzin, his given name,

means “One Who Speaks Like an Eagle,”

and Juan Diego faithfully delivered the Virgin’s

request that a church be built at Tepeyac

where she had appeared to him.

To the skeptical bishop’s request for a sign,

Our Lady showed Juan Diego roses blooming

through stony ground, despite winter’s cold.

When he unfolded his tilma to present them to

the bishop, imprinted there was Mary’s image!

Her blue sash and the flower over her womb

were traditional Aztec symbols of pregnancy

and new life. But her features were those of

a mestiza, indicating mixed Aztec-European

heritage. Thus to peoples too easily prone to

a “clash of cultures,” Our Lady of Guadalupe

remains the enduring icon of unity-in-diversity,

the fruit of our one baptism into Jesus, her Son.

HELP WITH CHRISTMASS TREES

This upcoming Christmas season we

would like to ‘upgrade’ our Christmas

decorations. Most of our artificial Christmas trees

are very old - broken stands, missing branches

and parts, ripped and nonfuctional lights...

If you have a slightly used Christmas tree,

or if you would like to donate towards the

purchase of a new tree, we would be very

grateful. Preferably, we are looking for trees

with clear (white) lights.

For more information, please speak with Kamil

Duda, our music director, after any Mass.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL SOCIETY

Next Sunday the St. Vincent DePaul

Society will be conducting the

monthly parish food drive.

Donations may be brought during all the

masses. If you should be unable to donate food

items at this time, you may want to consider

making a cash donation in the St. Vincent

DePaul poor box. Your continued support is

greatly appreciated.

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL SOCIETY

The St. Vincent DePaul Society would

l ike to remind everyone who

purchased a Christmas gift for a child

at St. Thomas of Canterbury to return them the

weekend of December 7 and 8 during all the

Masses. We wish to thank you for your continued

support of this very special project.

2:1 Matching Gift Opportunity

for Tax Credit Scholarships

Dear St. Monica Parishioners,

St. Monica Parish is grateful to you for supporting

the advancement of Catholic school education.

I am writing about a unique opportunity for Archdiocese

of Chicago Catholic schools. The State of Illinois created a

tax credit scholarship program through the “Invest in Kids”

Act that is mutually beneficial to students and donors.

It provides a 75 percent Illinois State income tax credit

to individuals who contribute money to fund scholarships

for students to attend private schools. Eligible students from

low-income families in Illinois may use these

scholarships to attend a non-public school of their choice,

including the more than 200 Archdiocese of Chicago

Catholic schools in Cook and Lake Counties.

To increase the funds available for scholarships next year,

several donors have partnered with the scholarship granting

organization Empower Illinois and the Archdiocese

of Chicago to create a matching gift pool.

Every dollar donated to this program through Empower

Illinois between Dec. 1, 2019 and Feb. 29, 2020 and

designated to a school operated by the

Archdiocese of Chicago will be matched with two

dollars from this pool (limitations apply). The program

will end when all matching funds have been

depleted or on Feb. 29, 2020, whichever comes first.

A $5,000 donation will have a tremendous impact. With

the 75 percent tax credit you receive on the

donation and this match, it will have a net cost to

you of $1,250 and will provide $15,000 in scholarships

for low-income families.

After April 1, 2020, any matching gift program funds that

are not awarded at a designated school will be

reallocated to low-income students at schools with

unmet demand.

Donors who would like to receive the tax credit for their

2019 taxes should begin the process prior to Dec. 16,

2019 to ensure they have enough time to make

their gift by Dec. 31, 2019.

We hope you will join us in supporting Archdiocese

of Chicago Catholic schools and provide more children

a quality Catholic school education. For more information,

please contact me or the archdiocese’s Tax Credit

Scholarship Office at [email protected] or 312.534.2617.

Sincerely,

Ray Coleman,

Principal – St. Monica Academy

ŚPIEWNIK II NIEDZIELA ADWENTU

Oto Pan Bóg przyjdzie,

z rzeszą świętych nam przybędzie.

Wielka światłość w dzień ów będzie

Alleluja, alleluja. /3x

Psalm:

Śpiewajcie Bogu, bo ucznił cuda.

Głos wdzięczny z nieba wychodzi,

Gwiazdę nam nową wywodzi,

Która rozświeca ciemności

i odkrywa nasze złości.

Z różdżki Jesse kwiat zakwita,

który zbawieniem świat wita;

Pan Bóg zesłał Syna swego,

Przed wieki narodzonego.

Ojcowie tego czekali,

prorocy przepowiadali,

że się Bóg światu miał zjawić,

od śmierci człeka wybawić.

Wnet Anioł Pannie zwiatował,

o czym prorok prorokował:

Iż miał powstać Syn zacnego

Plemienia Dawidowego.

Weselcie się ziemskie strony!

Opuściwszy niebios trony,

Bóg idzie na te niskości

z niewysłowionej litości.

Weselcie się i Anieli,

A bądźcie z tego weseli:

Że się nam Bóg w ciele stawi,

Ten upadek nasz naprawi.

Weselcie się wszyscy Święci

i wy ludzie smutkiem zdjęci;

Idzie na świat Odkupiciel,

Strapionych wszystkich Zbawiciel.

Wesel się stary Adamie,

Wesel się i Abrahamie,

Już wstaje twe pokolenie,

Wszystkich narodów zbawienie.

Chrystus Pan karmi nas

swoim świętym Ciałem,

chwalmy Go na wieki.

Zdrowaś bądź Maryja, niebieska lilija,

Panu Bogu miła Matko litościwa;

Tyś jest nasza ucieczka, najświętsza Maryja.

Maryja wielebna, ukaż drogę pewną,

przykazania Twego Boga wszechmocnego,

On ci wszystka nadzieja zbawienia naszego.

Łaskiś pełna Pańskiej, czystości anielskiej,

Pannaś nad pannami, Święta nad świętymi.

O najświętsza Maryja, módl się dziś za nami.
