Prayer for the Day: Bountiful God, whose Son revealed his glory at Cana of

Galilee: help us to believe and obey, so that, as our Saviour promised, we may be

filled with the wine of new life and show forth his joy and love; who lives and

reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

READINGS FOR THE DAY

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET ISAIAH

CHAPTER 62 VERSES 1-5:

The LORD says this: For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake

I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a

burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory;

and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. You

shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand

of your God. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be

termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land

Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a

young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the

bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.

HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD THANKS BE TO GOD

PSALM 36.5-10: We say alternate verses:

Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens,

and your faithfulness to the clouds.

Your righteousness is like the strong mountains,

your justice like the great deep; you save both human and beast, O Lord.

How priceless is your love, O God!

your people take refuge under the shadow of your wings.

They feast upon the abundance of your house;

you give them drink from the river of your delights.

For with you is the well of life, and in your light we see light.

Continue your loving-kindness to those who know you,

and your favour to those who are true of heart.

January to allow time for printing and publication of the

booklets before the meeting. Please pray about your

The Second Sunday after the Epiphany – Sunday 17 January 2016 Isaiah 62.1-5; Psalm 36.5-10; 1 Corinthians 12.1-11; John 2.1-11

Our closeness to God is what he desires more than anything and the prophet Isaiah expresses this through the image of that sacred institution, Marriage. God’s people are close to him like a bride is close to her bridegroom, and as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so God rejoices over his people. Now, we receive so many gifts through the Spirit every day, often without us fully appreciating them or even being aware of them. The goal of these gifts is for us to draw closer to God and to bring others close to him as well.

Pray for the awareness of God’s Spirit active in our lives and in the life of the Church, that we might cultivate and refine our gifts and draw closer to God.

Give thanks for the Anglican Church of Kenya, remembering especially today the children enrolled in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd programs.

Rev’d Derek Barrett’s Commentary on the Readings:

Psalm 36 The writer of this psalm does what the other psalmists do, namely to compare and

contrast one concept with another, darkness/light, truth/lies, godly/ungodly. But it is

not all black or white, the imagery is in technicolour and the sky and the mountains

and the seas are painted in rich and strong shades. There are those who can detect

this and there are those who can’t. Those who do see in this way are able to imagine

the splendour of the Almighty who is never monochrome or dull. This psalmist

challenges us to say whether or not we can see God in all His majesty and

magnificence and are consequently enlightened by the splendid panorama of

creation. If so, it is not only a revelation of beauty but a matching acceptance of

order and morality in our own lives. So the psalm ends in prayer. All these created

resources are at our disposal, and we are to pray that we make good use of them all.

The love and the saving power are freely offered.

1 Corinthians 12 Many Christians like this passage because it contains the words of a favourite

hymn, “Jesus is Lord, Creation’s voice proclaims it, for by His power each tree and

flower was planned and made….praise Him with alleluias for Jesus is Lord”. It is

an ancient battle cry for it was coined in an empire where Caesar alone was Lord.

You only said Jesus is Lord at the pain of death, and it was well said that the blood

of the martyrs was the seed of the Church. Paul is saying that the words could only

be uttered because the Holy Spirit allowed them to be said. No-one ever discovered

the truth of the saying by intellectual endeavour but because God in His Grace made

the revelation and the earliest Christian congregations proved that Jesus was their

Lord by responding to what the Holy Spirit was giving them, namely, wisdom,

knowledge, faith, healing, power and prophecy, discernment. This passage also

contains, “You are the Body of Christ” which we proudly and confidently proclaim

at every Eucharist as, “We are the Body of Christ, His Spirit is with us”!

John 2

Epiphany has its own themes and topics, and one of them has always been “the first

miracle that Jesus wrought in Cana of Galilee” to quote Archbishop Cranmer from

the B.C.P. marriage service. Later theologians have updated Cranmer’s term

‘miracle’ to ‘sign’, because the writer of the fourth gospel doesn’t call the

supernatural events miraculous, they are signs or signposts to indicate the

progressive nature of the revelation of Jesus and the order in which His disciples

came to believe in Him. Today we are to come to terms with the first of the seven

signs, the other six being the healing of a nobleman’s son, the healing of an

impotent man, the feeding of five thousand people, walking on the water, the

healing of a man born blind and the resurrection of Lazarus. So the conversion of a

large volume of water into excellent wine was not a “one-off” as they say in

industrial circles. Jesus had this consecrating touch, and the disciples (so called in

this narrative) saw it and felt it for themselves, and in this manner they learnt who

and what He was.

3

THE EPISTLE IS WRITTEN IN THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO THE

CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 12 VERSES 1-11:

Concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be

uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led

astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no

one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says ‘Let Jesus be cursed!’ and no one

can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of

gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord;

and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of

them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the

common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and

to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another

faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another

the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of

spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of

tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each

one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD THANKS BE TO GOD

THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO ST JOHN

CHAPTER 2 BEGINNING AT THE 1ST VERSE:

There was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine

gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said

to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet

come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ Now

standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each

holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’

And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and

take it to the chief steward.’ So they took it. When the steward tasted the water

that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the

servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and

said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine

after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until

now.’ Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his

glory; and his disciples believed in him.
