The worship of God is the center of our common life and our primary witness to the faith, hope, and love we have in Jesus Christ.

Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)Book of Order, W-1.0107

Dear Friends,

Worship is important for Presbyterians. We gather into a sacred space, where we greet each other and settle into holy time. We set aside distractions so we can focus our attention to God.

Our language reflects our shared worship and is carefully prepared. Recently, we have become aware that a bit of our language might not be as welcoming as it can be. At certain points in our worship, we invite people to stand as a posture of reverence before God. We stand for the Call to Worship, for the Confession of Sin, to sing hymns, and when we praise God for God’s generosity toward us.

For a number of years, our invitation to stand has been “Those who are able, please stand.” Recently, we have realized this language may not be as friendly as we intend. We welcome all fully into worship regardless of ability. We don’t wish for the invitation to leave anyone out, such as someone whose physical condition prohibits them from standing.

After reflection and conversation by our Accessibility Team, Worship Ministry, Session and staff, we are adopting what we hope will be more hospitable language to invite worshipers into a posture of reverence: “Please rise in body or spirit.” This is an invitation to prepare oneself in a reverent way even if standing is not possible.

Our Statement of Welcome and Inclusiveness reminds us of the varieties of needs persons bring into worship. We want our worship language to be inclusive to all, as we gather before God. The hospitality we extend is the same hospitality Christ extends as we gather around Christ’s table. For this holy hospitality, we are thankful. For being included, we are thankful. And thank you for your part in extending Christ’s hospitality to those around us.

Christ’s peace,

Lenten Adult Sunday School Class“Reclaiming Jesus”

March 3 – April 149:50-10:50 a.m. • Second Hall

On Ash Wednesday, 2018, Christian leaders from across the country, including, Walter Brueggemann, Michael Curry, Cynthia Hale, Richard Rohr, and Sharon Watkins produced a document entitled Reclaiming Jesus. Believing the document worthy of study and discussion, the pastors will lead a Sunday school class on it during Lent. The class will provide an opportunity to reflect on and explore questions such as:• Who is Jesus Christ for us today?• What does our loyalty to him require?• What does it mean to be disciples who regard Jesus as Lord

at this moment in our history? The class is led by Steve Hancock, Lindy Vogado, Alisa Secrest, and Jen Evans.

We are currently receiving commitments to the 2019 annual stewardship campaign. We are off to a great start and have received estimates of giving and gifts totaling $1,889,106. If you have not made your commitment, there are four ways you can turn in your Estimate of Giving card:• Place it in the offering plate Sunday, March 17.• Mail it to the church.• Drop it off at the church office during the week.• Complete it online through our church’s website at

secondpreslr.org.Estimate of Giving Cards are in the pews.

A Lenten Devotional BookWritten by Second Presbyterian Church members

Giving thanks today and always for God’s light in our world!

First and Third Monday MorningWomen’s Bible Study

Spring is “springing” and plans are underway for a four-week study in April and May. All are invited to gather together to study and discuss the book The Lord’s Prayer for Today by William J. Carl III. We have enjoyed studies from this series in previous years (The Beatitudes for Today, Ten Commandments for Today, etc.). The Lord’s Prayer for Today seems particularly appropriate for the Lenten/Easter season and this series has proven to be an engaging group study resource. In this volume well-known preacher and seminary president (and brother of Debbie Freeman, former minister at Westover Hills Presbyterian) William Carl interprets the prayer in light of how it was understood by Jesus’ disciples and examines the significant role the prayer can play in the life of Christian believers today. This book has been described as “a delightfully compelling blend of biblical scholarship, solid theology, and rich storytelling.” Readers will be able to go deeper than they ever have before into the meaning of ‘the shortest and yet most profound prayer ever prayed’.”The book is available in the church office for $10.00. The class will meet in Second Hall at 9:30 a.m. with the following schedule:April 1: Chapters 1, 2, 3 (pages 1-22)April 15: Chapters 4, 5, 6 (pages 23 – 47)May 6: Chapters 7, 8, 9 (pages 48 – 67)May 20: Chapters 10, 11, 12 (pages 68 – 93)For more information please contact Jeannie Ford, [email protected] or (501) 227-0000.

you down. And she isn’t getting any better. You’re exhausted. You need someone to care for you.

A Stephen Minister can be this person. He or she won’t push advice on you—in stead, your Stephen Minister will listen and care for you, helping you sort through your feelings and discover the resources you need to make it through.

If you are going through a tough time and could use a caring friend, Second Presbyterian Church is a Stephen Ministry congregation. We provide confidential Christian caregiving to hurting people. To find out more about Stephen Ministry or to receive a Stephen Minister’s care, call Associate Pastor Alisa Secrest, (501) 227-0000. We would appreciate your help . . . in keeping the church office informed when there is a sickness in your family, when someone is in the hospital, or a death has occurred. Please also keep us updated on the sickness or concern so that the information we have on our Care and Concern Line is accurate. Members and friends can call the Care and Concern Line, (501) 227-6117, on weekdays to receive information about prayer concerns in our church family. We will honor all requests for confidentiality, but in order for us to offer pastoral care we need to be aware of your situation. We also want to know about the joys, accomplishments and achievements of members of the church. Please call Alisa Secrest or Sharon Howard in the church office with information, (501) 227-0000, or e-mail [email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks for your help!
