Interfaith Friendship Camp2017

Second Presbyterian ChurchSecond Presbyterian had the honor and privilege of hosting the second annual Interfaith Friendship Camp July 10 – 14. The theme for the camp was “Let’s Celebrate.”

Children and leaders from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Bahai, Universalist Unitarian, and Hindu faiths joined together to explore the faith celebrations and festivals of several faith traditions. We “celebrated” Hajj and Eid a-Adah (Muslim faith), built sukkahs to celebrate the Jewish festival of Sukkot, celebrated Christmas with a pageant complete with costumes and music, and celebrated everyone’s birthday with a skating party on Friday. It was a fun and busy week during which 53 children made new friends and learned about their own faith and the faith of their new friends.

We had several of our children participating and Jeannie Ford, Mary Ibis, and Sarah Burns served on the leadership team. Caroline Crow, Britton Varn, Pam Luther, Mary Ann Foerste, Mary Virginia Smith, and Nancy I. Smith also served as volunteers.

Our congregation received a gift of a beautiful Friendship Quilt Banner (designed by Sarah Burns). The quilt has a friendship star in the center and is surrounded by hand-made squares created by campers and helpers at this year’s camp. The quilt serves as a “thank you” gift and a reminder of the rich experiences and friendships created this summer. Thank you for the support of this congregation that makes it possible for children in our community to have this wonderful experience of spiritual growth and working toward peace for our world.

Usher/Greeter VolunteersAlways Appreciated

Those who serve as ushers and greeters for our worship service are providing a ministry of hospitality for members and visitors to our church. Along with providing an important leadership role for worship, those who serve as ushers and greeters are also afforded a wonderful opportunity to meet and work alongside other members of the congregation. You may contact the following deacons who serve as usher captains to volunteer as ushers or greeters:

Hospital Visitation Training SessionOn August 31 at 5:30 p.m. a training session will be conducted by Stacey Hammons and Rev. Marie Mainard O’Connell. They will be sharing their expertise as professionals with all interested in attending. Even if you don’t plan to sign up but are interested in feeling more confident when visiting your friends in the hospital, this session is for you. A light meal will be provided at no charge, but reservations must be made by contacting Sharon Hughes, 227-0000 or [email protected], no later than August 28.

Please also keep us updated on the sickness or concern so that the information we have on our Care and Concern Line is accurate. Members and friends can call the Care and Concern Line, 227-6117, on weekdays to receive information about prayer concerns in our church family. We will honor all requests for confidentiality, but in order for us to offer pastoral care we need to be aware of your situation.
