W hen it was completed in July, 1935, the 700 pages of “Porgy and Bess” represented Gershwin’s most ambitious creation

He never stopped loving each and every bar, never wavered in the conviction that he had produced a work of art.” Plano favorite Donnie Ray Albert joins Hector Guzman and soprano Pamela Dillard in excerpts from Catfish Row – thesetting for Gershwin’s beloved“Porgy and Bess.” The subscription performance also features the winners of the Collin County Young Artist Competition, which has now become one of the highlights of the season according to feedback from many Plano Symphony Orchestra patrons. One of the most popular pieces in the repertory, “Finlandia,” is a symphonic poem by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Much

of the work is rousing music evoking national pride of the Finnish people. But near the end, a calm comes over the music and the serenely melodic Finlandia Hymn is heard. The closing performance of the season showcases Mariusz Patyra, the phenomenal Polish violinist and winner of the Nicolo Paganini International Violin Competition that wowed audiences at his Plano Symphony debut withPaganini’sViolinConcertoNo.1.Patyrawillbeheardinfourshow-stopping works for violin and orchestra.
