After the resounding success of last year's festival, plans are now firming up for the next one, on December 29-31. As usual, a pleasing mix of local, regional and high-profile city-based musicians and poets will take part. Blackboards/ walk-ups and all sorts of free, informal sessions will sit alongside the ticketed program, so everyone can be happily entertained. Alistair Brown, popular entertainer from UK, has returned home after a most successful tour of eastern Australia. It was pleasing to see Alistair include Gulgong in his busy schedule. Other musicians eager to return to Gulgong include The Thomsons from Wangi Wangi, an easy drive to gigs in the Mudgee-Gulgong-Dubbo area. Newies to the Folk Festival in 2017, Scott and Jenny Thomson, gathered many fans of their appealing music through their gigs, with Scott also contributing via a workshop and a JD parody song. Great volunteer talents, also. A call for performers will be made shortly, so keep an eye on the Gulgong Folk Festival Facebook page. Public liability is required for all intending performers, as Gulgong Folk Club Inc is an Incorporated body. Please spread the word if you know of any entertainer who is into traditional or more contemporary material. Everyone remembers the excitement created by having the legendary Bushwackers in Gulgong for our last Festival. Astounding music!! Fantastic crowd-pleasers! To meet the demands of the 21st century, Gulgong Folk Club would like to cultivate the services of dedicated volunteers skilled in the areas of publicity, and administration. Web design skills are always welcome, too. If you care to share your tech talents, please email Marcus, or Di at [email protected] or else phone 0458 032 150. The joy of volunteering does outweigh the effort and work involved.

The much-maligned Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Hapsburg Empire of Austria-Hungary, came to NSW as part of World Tour in 1893. Promoted as

a fact-finding tour, the trip was really intended to benefit the health of the Archduke who had suffered from Tuberculosis. An avid hunter and collector, this lecture will explore where he visited on his trip (including Narromine and

Nyngan) and his collection of an eclectic range of items that reveal much about his enigmatic personality. Find out about the Archduke’s tragic family background and his post-Australia life, his struggle to marry the woman he

loved and his central role in the events leading to World War One.

Proudly supported by the Old Bank Music Shop, we are delighted to present... Lust for Live Acoustic - a series of intimate live music performances by local original artists. After an amazing first show, in April, with Simon Allen & the Unclaimed Millions, we are back with the next gig in our new event series, Lust for Live Acoustic. In June, we are excited to present Clinton Hoy. This supremely talented and driven local musician is the front-man for one of Dubbo's hardest working and recognisable original acts: One Proud Monkey. In June, he will bring us his solo work - a collection of beautifully crafted songs including cuts from his forthcoming solo album, “Pieces of Different Puzzles”. Don't miss this intimate performance from one our best local musical storytellers. Lust for Live Acoustic is presented in the Black Box Theatre. Located upstairs in the Community Arts Centre at the Western Plains Cultural Centre, this raked theatrette is the perfect setting for an intimate music performance.

Doors open at 6:30pm, with bar available. Performance from 7:00-7:45pm.

Tickets $10 presale (+ booking fee) or $15 at the door. Fred Randell - Lust4Live Dubbo - 0431 484 622

Benefit Concert for Dawn Walsh Recently the local cultural community was treated to a very moving and special event. As notable singer and vocal teacher, Dawn Walsh, has suffered serious ill health, a Benefit Concert was staged in her honour. The young operatic performers were Billie Palin and Nathan Bryon, former students of Dawn at Macquarie Conservatorium. These delightful performers were accompanied by the talented Di Pascoe. St Andrews Chapel was crowded with friends and supporters of Dawn. Messages of support and acknowledgement for Dawn, from Richard Gill, AO, Moffatt Oxenbould, AM and Richard Bonynge, AC, CBE, were read to the rapt audience. Dubbo Artz and the local community wishes Dawn Walsh good health, going into the future.

The University of the Third Age is a unique Worldwide movement that encourages older people to take up or continue educational and other

interests in friendly and informal settings. U3A Dubbo began in 1991, and currently offers more than 20 courses to nearly 400 members.

Course Leaders provide their time and services free of charge. This allows us to keep our fees (currently $20.00 per annum) to a minimum.

Looking at Art – A current topic of interest and debate across the community was given a timely plug by the U3A Course “Looking at Art”. The ‘Waste to art Exhibition’ at the WPCC was the venue for the April class. A tour of the exhibition, led by Sally Forrstrom, inspired interest and amazement. Since the beginning of the competition in 2010, the quality of entries each year has gone from strength to strength, with the current exhibits showing wonderful talent and imagination. Regional councils in NSW introduced Waste to Art as a means of educating people about the value of reusing resources. The theme for this year was Polystyrene. The exhibition remains open until 10 June. Visitors will note the large Galah welcoming them at the entrance. The winning entry by Alan Stanger is a beautiful plant fashioned from recycled paper cups from the ‘Drive in Coffee’ service. Perhaps council could challenge untapped local talent to be creative and solve more of our recycling nightmares!

Smokescreen | The Searchers Saturday 2 June | 4.00pm A precarious and unsettling film, The Searchers was John Ford's 115th feature film and his 13th with John Wayne, and while it has all the trappings of a classic Western, it leaves the viewer unsure. The Searchers tells the emotionally complex story of a perilous, hate-ridden quest and Homeric-style odyssey of self-discovery after a Comanche massacre, while also exploring the themes of racial prejudice and sexism.

As It Is – From Di Community: Some may think of this simply as an abstract noun. Others might immediately recall warm and wonderful experiences with people they know, or possibly do not know or interact with frequently, but have had very pleasurable experiences with. We can recall school lessons and our own observations or recollections of time and place where a function meant that people reacted and co-operated well and smoothly with each other. Small and large settlements have shows, sporting events, markets and performances with a happy mixing of many different people. Individuals and groups have their own dynamic, value and significance. Books, poems and films may result from important missions and causes. Communities in the 'global spotlight' may appear to function differently to our own. With 600 000 000 guns owned by 326 000 000 people in the USA there will obviously be some different community activities and attitudes. Gun Shows are much more common in America than in other countries around the world. Some tourism literature promotes the idea to “take only pictures, leave only footprints" when visiting a foreign place of interest. The latest royal wedding featured many thoughtful strategies to blend different age groups, racial elements, traditions and cultural factors. Preacher Michael Curry dwelt on the power of love, which is sought after, globally. Love, empathy and justice builds and sustains communities everywhere. Choirs, cellos, flowers and people mixing in harmony can ensure a delightfully amicable, gratifying social event, as it did in Windsor city. Sadly, much of rural Australia is in the grip of an on-going drought. We see evidence of the Hay Runners from Burrumbuttock deliver thousands of much needed hay bales to farmers at Cunnamulla, Cobar, Bourke and other centres in need. This wonderful act shows strong sense of community! We do gain pleasure from helping others in a volunteer capacity. Some community-minded folk band together to support people and families in need, by providing food, clothing and other essentials. Out of charity strong human bonds can grow, with language and cultural factors triggering creativity, fun and special relationships. As our earth warms we struggle with gardens and crops. Trees planted many decades ago are treasured for their welcome shade in our intense summer heat. Cricket fans have, for many generations, cheered on their teams around ovals in the Dubbo CBD, building their own sense of community and support for the rising stars hoping to 'make it' to the SGC. In the shade of mighty trees. Yes, country communities need to sustain themselves through the western heat with the best drink coolers and umbrellas they can source, if valued trees disappear. Healthy, supportive communities are incredibly valuable. Let us all appreciate what we have. Health, happiness, and opportunities. One of the most powerful community events some of us have attended was the recent Benefit Concert in St Andrews Chapel, Dubbo. The strong sense of community support felt by all present on that Sunday afternoon was palpable. It is a joy to live and interact with others in a strong and happy community. The Dubbo Artz Committee values your support for our newsletter and the efforts that individuals and groups make, for the betterment of all, in our local community. It is a pleasure to live in 'The Paris of the west'.

at Bracken House as Ruth Leavers celebrated her 100th Birthday. Practices now will focus on preparations for a 'Christmas in July'

program, followed by some interesting items for gigs in August to feature jazz and gospel numbers. Any singers wishing to add a bit more

singing to their weekly schedule (practices are on Wednesday evenings) are urged to get in touch with Di, on 0458 032 150. Also, entities wishing to engage Palmer Street Singers for weekday entertainment (mainly) are

also welcome to make contact. Singing has been proven to be good for your health and well-being. Jan Condie

Singing performances around the local area always offer pleasure and a sweet social vibe,

for the performers as well as the audience. The Palmer Street Singers have been busy during

May, celebrating Mothers' Day the best way they know how, through a'cappella music. The group was also pleased

to sing a couple of songs to the gathering of family and friends

Dubbo

We are heading into one of our favourite times of year – The City of Dubbo Eisteddfod - which will take up residence at DRTCC from 31st May for 24 days culminating in a grand concert on Saturday 23 June at 3 pm. The Eisteddfod draws in entries in the disciplines of dance, speech, drama, vocal, choral and instrumental. It is the only event that utilises every single space available in the venue at the same time including auditoriums, stages, foyers, dressing rooms, green room, stage manager’s office, kitchen – everything! It’s a great vibe to see the venue pumping with excitement, energy and the delicious aromas from the Oxley Room café.

Did you know the Eisteddfod committee consists of 14 members and they

meet every month throughout the year to plan and prepare for the next

Eisteddfod? Members contribute many hours to all areas of preparation

including the Syllabus, recording and checking online entries, sourcing

experienced adjudicators, preparation of the program, seeking

sponsorship, preparing prize and trophies, communication and

promotion. The Eisteddfod also relies on their valuable volunteers to help

the committee in the areas of catering, ticket sales, scribing and manning

doors. This year, the committee called on extra troops with some of the

Theatre volunteers offering to help on the group weekend.

I was impressed to learn that this year there were approximately 2 500

entries which means thousands of students will grace the stage during the

month of June. Entries can take the form of solos, groups, bands and

choirs so you can easily see how the number of individuals performing on

stage is huge. The dance section entries were up this year with many new

schools entering the competition. The event attracts competitors from

the Riverina, Newcastle district, ACT, Blue Mountains, Bathurst, Orange

and Wellington to name a few. These competitors bring their family and

friends to Dubbo who stay several nights. With the average spend for a

night in Dubbo being $140.02 (Destination NSW - Dubbo Profile) you can

see the massive economic multiplier effect the event has on the region.

Everything you want to know about the Eisteddfod is on their website

dubboeisteddfod.org.au including programs for each discipline and ticket

prices. So, if you want to escape the cold, see amazing talent, support emerging artists or enjoy cake and coffee at the Oxley Room Café, Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre is the place to be in June!

For Clinton Bradley collecting is more than just amassing works by his favourite artists, it is a creative dialogue with the artist, dealer and audience. Born and raised near Molong, NSW, Bradley has been collecting art since 2007 and has curated a collection of works by some of Australasia’s most sought-after artists, spanning sculpture, digital and conceptual art. This exhibition explores his ongoing interest in collecting and surveys his collection to the present day.

Adelaide-based artist Michelle Nikou draws on surrealism in a reflective and productive way to transform mundane domestic objects and materials into sculptures of humour and marvel. In this exhibition of new and recent work she utilises surrealist strategies such as chance, psychological metaphor, deadpan wit and juxtaposition, and inventively mingles high and low art sources and cultural references. Her work intentionally blurs and extends the boundaries between fine art and craft and often invests unremarkable or overlooked facets of daily existence with new and unexpected significance.

ACO Virtual, the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s world-first digital installation, was built using state-of-the-art technology. This ground-breaking interactive installation allows the audience to conduct and even play with the Orchestra. Audiences can see how fast the musician’s fingers move in a way not possible in a concert hall, hear the unique sounds of the ACO’s multi-million-dollar collection of instruments and take the helm of the “greatest chamber orchestra on earth” and stand in for Richard Tognetti himself.

Unbind Me is a fractured and questioning wrestle with historical Western philosophy and how it has created myths about the ‘right’ and ‘true’ and ‘natural’ properties of the world and how, still today, these legacies have dangerous and real consequences in our contemporary society. A genealogical line is drawn from Plato (c428 - 348 BCE) through to Elizabeth Grosz (1952) that outlines both the status quo and counter narratives that have occurred over time. Each artwork is informed by quotes from culturally defining philosophers and theorists who have set the agenda in their lifetime and beyond. From large paintings spilling with fabric, to intimate works on paper, the artworks are searching for a deeper meaning of our reality and how we arrive at our beliefs.

Also, a highlight was the band “Trouble in the Kitchen” who began as teenagers and are now an awesome Celtic outfit. I also caught up with Rob Willis, Jason and Chloe Roweth, long-time friends of many former and current members. It was wonderful to see Peter Maher back at our last session and performing at Dundullimal. I flew the folk flag at the Dundullimal 30th anniversary celebrations. I would to remind everyone that while we are listed as a Folk Club, we are actually about acoustic music that comes from the heart and the heartland in a broader sense. Looking forward to seeing and hearing you in June and July, at 2.30pm, the second Sunday of every month at the Western Star Hotel in Dubbo. Yours in music - Jock Webb – President - 6889 2069

Greetings folkies and acoustic players. The National Folk Festival was a spectacular show yet again. For me one highlight was meeting Dave Gunning who performed at Toongi back in March. Great performer, even when North Canberra lost power.
