Whether you are new to the Lace Market Theatre experience or you are one of our regular
audience members, we are delighted to welcome you to our 2010-2011 season. Please leave
the everyday world behind and experience a wide range of plays performed to the highest
standards. From comedy to tragedy, our programme aims to entertain and challenge.
We start our season with Blood Wedding, written by the Spanish playwright, Federico
Garcia Lorca, who was executed by Franco’s troops in 1936. Performed in our upstairs studio
space, Blood Wedding is one of Lorca’s most innovative and powerful plays. Next comes
Joe Orton’s classic black farce Loot. Fast paced comedy and razor sharp wit combine in this
classic sixties satire.
At the beginning of November, Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It takes centre stage in
the auditorium. John Godber’s pulsating play Bouncers is our next studio production. Laced
with tremendous one-liners, Bouncers demands that four actors play the parts of up to two
dozen characters from lads out for a good night to girls having a Friday night on the town.
Our Christmas show, Tom’s Midnight Garden is adapted by David Wood from the classic
children’s story by Philippa Pearce. Children and adults alike will love this tale of the clock that
strikes 13 and the magic that ensues.
2011 starts with Steven Berkoff’s adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Trial. The greatest
strength of this adaptation is its radical theatrical style. Following on is another auditorium
production, the classic British play The Deep Blue Sea by Terence Rattigan. Ladies’ Day by
Nottingham playwright, Amanda Whittington follows an all-girls’ outing to the races by four
fi sh factory workers. The outing becomes a rollercoaster ride of emotions, changing fortunes
and unexpected revelations. In March, we present The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie adapted
from the novel by Muriel Spark. In April, our Youth Theatre takes the stage with Oliver Twist,
a stage adaptation of Dickens’ famous novel.
After Easter, we return with a black satirical comedy Dinner, written by Moira Buffi ni in 2002.
Next we turn to the studio for Veronica’s Room by Ira Levin, a play to give you goose bumps.
In keeping with our policy of offering cutting edge productions, June sees a mainstage
production of A Clockwork Orange. Written by Anthony Burgess in 1962, this vision of a
dystopian England terrorised by Alex and his “droogs” still carries the power to shock an
audience today. Yet this darkly-comic play is also a morality tale. Come judge for yourself.
We round off the season with Dancing at Lughnasa. Brian Friel’s masterpiece is a
bittersweet refl ection on life in rural Ireland in the 1930s. Premiered in 1990, Dancing At
Lughnasa has previously been produced in the West End and on Broadway, winning an
Olivier Award and three Tony Awards.
We look forward to seeing you at the Lace Market Theatre.

Based on a true story of love, lust and betrayal, Blood Wedding is one of
Lorca’s most innovative and powerful plays. Through his inimitable poetry
and imagery he reveals the full force of human passion in a tragedy of fate.
A wedding, a family feud and three young hearts… Join us and experience
the drama and heat of Lorca’s best-known play from his ‘trilogy of the
Spanish earth’.

A masterpiece of black farce, Loot pokes a viciously satirical stick at the
Catholic Church, attitudes to death and the integrity of the police force. Hal
and Dennis have robbed the bank and decide to hide the money in the coffi n
of Hal’s recently deceased mother. The trouble is her body keeps appearing
around the house. Cue the arrival of Inspector Truscott and a series of
hilarious attempts to keep him off the trail. Mind you, Truscott needs little
help in being just about the least effective police offi cer in human history.
Fast paced comedy and razor sharp wit combine in this classic sixties satire.

Bouncers is about Britons at play. It is both a warning and a celebration. Acute
social observations create a nightmarish vision of the disco world. Bouncers
occupies the night-time with darker elements of the play acting as a constant
undercurrent. The play is a tour de force for the four actors who play all the
parts and physically demanding as the scenes switch from one to the other
with no breaks between them.

magical is about to happen. Based on the popular children’s book by
Philippa Pearce this play is a delightful alternative to a pantomime and
suitable for children of all ages. When a young boy is banished to stay with
unsympathetic relatives during his brother’s illness he discovers a garden and
a friend to comfort his loneliness - a relationship that celebrates a friendship
that crosses all barriers of age and time.

All those targets! All those deadlines! Those league tables! All those faceless

“ The Trial is my life. It is anyone’s trial.” Berkoff’s assertion, describing his
own adaptation of Kafka’s original work, has become as true now as ever it
was. His use of ‘total’ theatre, a stylistic combination of mime, the surreal,
absurd and physical theatre explores, expands and enriches Kafka’s profound
and searing vision.

It is 1952 and the War is over – but is Britain winning the Peace?
Freddie used to be a fi ghter pilot but is now reduced to idleness and whisky.
Hester used to be a judge’s wife but has given up everything for love. And Mr
Miller used to be a doctor … None of them can go back to what they were
before – but can they make new lives for themselves?
With great insight, honesty and humour Rattigan explores the dilemmas of
his characters caught between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.

Royal Ascot’s one-time relocation to York in Amanda Whittington’s sporting
romp, Ladies’ Day, is as much fun as a day at the races and much better value
for money.
To celebrate her early retirement, Pearl takes her friends from work for a posh
day out at the races.
It is Linda, the Tony Christie obsessed
youngster, through whom Lady Luck
provides the tickets when the group fi nd
they can’t afford the tout’s prices, and she
stays with them when their horses keep
winning – but will she stay ‘til the end?
The outing becomes a rollercoaster
ride of emotions, changing fortunes
and unexpected revelations when Pearl
confesses a long-term affair to Shelley, the
man-eater.
At times wry and poignant, this always
believable comedy leaves the audience
with a feel-good ending and a real appetite
for the sequel...

Oliver Twist’s declaration “I want some more,” is Dickens’ most famous
protest against cruelty and inhumanity. As Oliver is ensnared into the London
underworld by Fagin a powerful struggle between good and evil ensues. From
the brutality of the workhouse and Fagin’s gang, to the genteel world of Mr
Brownlow, ‘Oliver Twist’ is a compelling story of one boy’s struggle to hold
onto his humanity and be true to himself. A timeless classic.

We meet regularly throughout the year to share verse, prose, songs and
stories. Our meetings present the opportunity for those who enjoy reading
aloud poetry and drama to take part in two performances during the year.
These two evenings of entertainment, to which members and non-members
are welcome, will be held on 19th December 2010 and 5th June 2011. For
many the evening in December marks a nice start to the festive season and
usually includes the sampling of some delicious mulled wine and mince pies.
Further details of all our meetings will be circulated within The Boards and you
can also contact Enid White directly.
