The first AT X T E L E V I S I O N F E S T I VA L took place June 1-3, 2012 with over 700 attendees gathering in Austin, TX to watch television on the big screen, relive favorite series, discover new ones, get inspired, and discuss what’s to come in the the most influential pop culture medium.

S E A S O N S 2 & 3 O F AT X T E L E V I S I O N F E S T I VA L occurred the following years and grew not only by an additional day of festivities but also increased attendance and represented series by 30% each year with attending panelists nearly doubling.

W H AT E X A C T LY I S AT X T E L E V I S I O N F E S T I VA L?ATX is a place for television fans to come together with the creators, casts, and crew of their favorite series to experience the TV medium in a way that’s never been done before. We call it TV Camp for grown-ups.

Festivals create community, and so does television. Whether a series lasts 10 episodes or 10 years, it establishes a long-standing and loyal following. At ATX, we are celebrating television, creating opportunities for fans and industry alike to experience their favorite series (or discover a new one) as one community— ultimately taking the “water cooler” conversation public. With screenings, panels, parties, premieres, and more TV than you can imagine, ATX has become a must-do on every TV-lover’s list, whether they be press, industry, or fan.

ATX Television Festival and Final Draft, Inc. partnered to create an invaluable opportunity for industry hopefuls to gain rare access to both TV creatives and Studio decision-makers.

Contestants submitted pitches in the form of 90 second videos via YouTube that were viewed by a panel of industry judges who narrowed them to 10 finalists. They could pitch any type of show they wanted: a 1/2 hour drama for a traditional network, an hour drama for cable, a hybrid for original online content. The only guideline was that it be for a scripted (non-reality) series and pitched in under a minute and a half. Those 10 FINALISTS then pitched for 3 minutes LIVE at the festival, where judges chose one (1) winner.

PITCH COMPETITION PRESENTED WITH FINAL DRAFT, INC.

From its inception, ATX has set out to honor impactful and insightful television programming, along with the cast members and creatives who shaped those series. In 2014, the festival presented its first individual achievement award to Henry Winkler, whose body of work encompasses the standards that make up ATX Television Festival: thought provoking, lasting, genuine, expansive, and ultimately, entertaining. The award was presented during the festival weekend followed by a moderated conversation with the icon himself.

201 VIDEO SUBMISSIONS were received and narrowed down to 25 SEMI-FINALISTS by a panel of screeners.

O P E N I N G N I G H T kicked off with a red carpet world premiere screening of TNT’s LEGENDS followed by an exclusive Q&A. The after party moved down 6th Street to Maggie Mae’s Gibson Lounge where ATX, TNT, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Treaty Oak, Bulleit, Apothic Wine, and Miller/Coors hosted guests as they danced, laughed, and took a plethora of photos in our branded Smilebooth.

C LO S I N G N I G H T was hosted by FX Networks with a double feature including a premiere episode of FARGO with creator Noah Hawley, cast members Allison Tolman and Keith Carradine, and EP Warren Littlefield, followed by the world premiere of THE STRAIN with creator/showrunners Guillermo Del Toro and Carlton Cuse, and cast members Sean Astin, Corey Stoll, Kevin Durand, and Mia Maestro. An after-event followed on the rooftop of The Contemporary art gallery with music, premium food, branded Smilebooth, and beverages from Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Bulleit, Treaty Oak, Topo Chico, and Apothic Wine.

H A S B R O S T U D I O S P R E S E N T E D S AT U R D AY M O R N I N G C A R T O O N S capturing the hearts of a room full of 400 pajama-clad kids (big and small) during this free family friendly event. ATX sponsor KIND Healthy Snacks served cereal and provided silver dollar pancakes, while My Little Pony, The Littlest Pet Shop, and Transformers: Rescue Bots played. To complete the fun, families had the opportunity to dress up in our animated GIF Smilebooth and take home Hasbro themed toy giveaways.

T H E I N D U S T R Y R E C E P T I O N gave our panelists time to interact with each other and catch up with old friends at Hotel St. Cecilia. With sponsors Association of Texas Film Commissions, Tito’s Vodka, Treaty Oak Distilling, Bulleit, Topo Chico, and food provided by Top Chef Master Monica Pope, our friends from LA and New York had the perfect place to get to know Austin’s very own TV industry leaders and to learn how they, too, can film in Texas.

F R I D AY N I G H T L I G H T S C O M M U N I T Y O U T D O O R S C R E E N I N G brought out the cast and executive producer of Austin’s most beloved show. Armed with lawn chairs, over 500 fans came together at Hotel San Jose to listen to live music by Sara Watkins, Bob Guiney, and local Austin band Wiretree, before watching a fan-voted episode, while cheering in unison, “Clear eyes, full hearts, CAN’T LOSE!”

Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson have been in the film and television industries for over a decade. Caitlin focused her time and energy working on the production side for directors Betty Thomas, Nora Ephron, and Mira Nair. She has worked on a number of pilots, series, and feature films. In addition, she has been involved on the festival and filmmaker sides of renowned festivals like Sundance, Tribeca, and Doha Tribeca. Her love of the industry and festivals have led her to create a similar experience for a medium with even more pop culture influence and an untapped potential for community-building. Emily Gipson has spent her years in the industry working on the studio and network side for Fox, TLC, Discovery, and Fox TV Studios. She has seen the ins and outs of the business side of the entertainment industry, and ATX Television Festival was the perfect place to apply her extensive experience and knowledge.
