Newsletter for the Seaside Quilters Guild Pacific Beach, CA
Hello Quilting Sisters,
I am home after a visit to my daughters and their families in Colorado. The weather was chilly and blustery so I am happy to be home in San Diego.I was so pleased with our “other” meeting space for our Holiday meeting. Soledad Club added the lovely table décor with actual silverware, cloth napkins and lovely tablecloths. We enjoyed a variety of member’s yummy food. The Cozy Bowl” exchange provided lots of fun with many participating. Some were VERY interesting and some unique! And, of course there was the wine in its own “cozy” enclosure. I will bring this to the January Retreat since I was the last recipient. You were VERY generous with the holiday gifts SNOWMAN will deliver on Christmas morning to kids who are less fortunate than children in our lives. It is amazing that he and his band of merry men continue to do this year after year.Moving ahead, we will have our guest, Kimberly Rado of “Starry Night Hollow” at our JANUARY 8th meeting. Socializing at 6:30 meeting at 7. Please bring your block(s) of the month. If it is your birthday month bring your door prize gift. If you are on the snack list for January …well, you know what to do.We will have a board meeting @ 6 pm.In the meantime, A VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON to all of you! Andrea

JANUARY PROGRAM
Kim is the daughter of an accomplished artist, and spent her youth around oil paints and art shows. In high school, she won her first blue ribbon for a sculpture she did. She went on to study art and public relations in college. She had careers designing ceramic jewelry, acting, and in the beauty industry, as well as founding the Rancho Santa Fe Repertory Company, where she produced theatre events, designed sets and costumes, and acted. Designing and making costumes marked her transition into art quilts. Her quilts have appearedin numerous quilt shows, and
she has been designing patterns for over 15 years. She opened her own design studio in 2007 in southern California called Starry Night Hollow. She teaches and lectures at her shop and worldwide and she is currently working on her 4th book. She designs fabric and thread (WonderFil's Kim Rado Starry Night Hollow Dazzle collection) and her original patterns are sold in over 8 countries.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Seaside Quilt Guild - Block of the Month, November 2018
“Single Chain and Knot”, quilterscache.com
Your block will be more colorful
than this illustration;
it also shows several seam lines
that your block WON’T have. ——->
Search your scraps and
gather up the following underlined fabrics.
1. Make a pretty 6-½” nine patch block!
(5) 2-½” squares - DARK, ALL THE SAME
(4) 2-½” squares - LIGHT PRINT, ALL THE SAME (leftover charm square?)
=====
2. Make (4) four patch units
Using the 1-1/2” white strip you were given, pair it with a 1-½” x 12-½” strip of
MEDIUM TO DARK BLUE fabric; sew together side by side. Cut (8) 1-½” slices; put
them together to make 4 nine patches (2-½”)
=====
3. From the white on white strip you were given, cut:
(4) 2-½” x 6-½” strips
Sew a strip to two opposite sides of the nine patch. Following the diagram, sew blue
and white four patch units to each end of the remaining two strips, making sure that
the blue squares are positioned correctly. When the block is put together, the four
blue corners should point ‘outward’, toward the corners of the block. Your block
should now measure 10-½” square.

Name Answer
Deborah Lancaster I’d say I’m an experienced quilter; I love to learn new techniques, even if I never use them again. I love to teach and help others learn, as it’s a great moment when someone realizes that they CAN do something that they thought they couldn’t do. (Ask Karen Zappone about the Featherweight).
Lois Heath I’m thinking mine is:1. Organization and “Stash Cache” – making, sorting, storing, and maintaining your own pre-cuts2. “Block Locker” – same idea, but with those orphans we end up creating.
Patt Seitas Expert at dating quilts and making very small quilts
Cindy Feagle* T-shirt quilts
Sally Stovall * Debbie M’s guru
Loretta Ogen * Hand quilting
Helen Hillman and Linda Duggan*
Linus quilts
Karen Zappone I like quilting with friends, piecing and “basting” with fusible batting by Hobbs. I also love working on fabric bowls using the “Bali Bowls” pattern.
Judy Uyemura & Barbie Lorentz*

Helen Hillman and Chris Bernet*

Patti Brown* Fastest quilter ever seen

COMMUNITY SERVICE
JANUARY 2019
PROJECT LINUS
It’s been a great year for
Seaside and Linus. The guild
completed 261 quilts for Linus
in 2018, thanks to our many volunteers. Special shout out to everyone
who has helped us out this past year. Now
that the holidays are over, we can really get
stitching again. There will be a basket of
quilts available at the Guild meeting ready
for your special touch. My real need right
now is to have quilting done. There are two
boxes of blankets pin basted and ready for your stitching. If you want work to take
home, please come to a workshop or call me
at 619-888-9197. Many hands make light
work. J
We will resume our regular schedule on
Monday, January 7. Project Linus will continue to meet on the 1st Monday and the
3rd Tuesday of the month at 10:30am at my
home. Bring your own lunch. Everyone is
welcome.

Thanks to whomever made this beautiful soup bowl cozy with the great bowl in it. I use it all the time! But I haven’t had the soup yet because I had just made a huge batch of curried lentil soup!! Carol Simpson
DONATIONS

Kennel ComfortersThank you for your continued support to the Kennel Comfort Project. We appreciate your washable batting leftovers and washable fabrics. We no longer use the small scraps. Doggie and kitty beds are washed and reused many times and the smaller scraps just didn’t work.
Audrey Noonan
Yarn for ErnieThis is a reminder that Ernie can always use more yarn. It’s better if it is not wool so it’s washable. He makes blankets out of donated yarn and gives them to Project Linus. You can give me any yarn you are willing to part with. Small balls are fine, they make nice stripes. Thank you in advance.

MEMBER CORNER
I always wondered what is the difference between an art quilt and modern quilt. All quilts even traditional, seem artistic.
National Quilters Circle suggests:A traditional quilt is anything that is based on or is a simple variation of a time-honored historical block or technique.
Art quilts are usually quilts that are viewed as art and are not utilitarian and unique design by the maker.
Modern quilts push the tradition’s limits with new piecing and applique techniques, and use a lot of Batiks and fabrics that follow the current trends in their designs and colors and stylizations.
I guess quilts could be all three if theyare based on a time-honored block, with new techniques and uniquely designed for the wall. What do you consider yourself?
