President’s Message- Ed SimonThe new SJC Board is now in office and officers have been selected. For another year, I’ll remain as President and Jeff Hawtof will continue as Vice President. Alyssa Simon will be our Secretary and Mike Saltzman will be our Treasurer.I would be remiss if I did not mention the two members who left the Board. Jason Bradley and Jennifer Rubenstein completed two three-year terms and were not eligible to run this year. But I’m sure they will remain engaged at SJC in activities and on committees. During the past six years, Jason held three offices–President, Vice President, and Secretary. He has always been very helpful to me as a mentor and as a contributor to the Board. We were very fortunate to have Jennifer as our treasurer. She possesses an amazing amount of institutional knowledge and always knows what procedures need to be done. She will continue to be involved in the financial aspects of SJC as well as chair of the Communications Committee. Each year the Community Service Committee does extensive research and suggests organizations to receive donations from SJC. An article elsewhere in this issue provides information about this year’s recipients.I am also pleased to announce that the Board made two additional donations for $500 each, both in support of the worldwide fight against the Ebola outbreak. Both of these donations were researched and recommended by the Community Services Committee and were made out of the SJC General Fund. One donation went to Doctors Without Borders, a private

international association made up mainly of doctors and health sector workers, but also open to others who support their goals. DWB provides assistance to populations in distress irrespective of race, religion, creed or political convictions. They operate seven Ebola case management centers, providing approximately 600 beds in isolation and two transit centers. Since the beginning of the outbreak, they have admitted more than 7,000 patients, among whom around 4,400 were confirmed as having Ebola. Nearly 1,900 patients have survived. More than 1,305 tons of supplies have been shipped to the affected countries since March. The other donation went to Partners in Health, who provide an option for the poor in healthcare. PIH strives to achieve two overarching goals: to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those in most need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH is planning to supplement the ongoing community and health center work in Liberia and Sierra Leone. PIH workers will help people affected by the West Africa Ebola outbreak.2015 promises to be a busy, challenging and successful year for SJC.

Religious School NewsThe religious school had a wonderful month in December celebrating Chanukah. On December 7, 23 people from SJC including religious school students, teachers, parents, and teens traveled to Wilmington to participate in the Wilmington JCC’s “Chanukah Fest.” The kids played “Jewpardy” with kids from all over Delaware, toured the JCC, played Chanukah games, listened to music, and ate a delicious kosher lunch. A great time was had by all. Everyone was excited to connect with fellow Jews from throughout the state of Delaware. The following weekend, on December 14, the Youth Education and Social Committees held an amazing Chanukah party at Seaside. More information on the party can be found elsewhere in this issue. Formore information about our SJC teen group please contact Alyssa Simon at [email protected].

Religious School Shabbat Feb 6Let’s kvell over our religious school children as they lead us in song and prayer as part of our Friday night service on February 6 at 6:30 (note earlier time). Let us join together in worship as Beth Cohen and Jeff Hawtof lead us as a SJC family highlighting our children’s accomplishments. During the service, we will also thank and honor our teachers who enrich our children’s Judaic life.

Chanukah PartyOn the morning of December 14, the Religious School and the Social Committee joined forces to sponsor the SJC Chanukah Party. Over seventy adults and children (a full house!) gathered to enjoy the day’s events. The morning began with the students presenting a musical program of songs, followed by candle lighting and blessings. Everyone then adjourned downstairs for dreidel games and a traditional Chanukah lunch, including latkes and jelly donuts. Students made pasta menorahs and decorated Chanukah cookies. Everyone came with a toy to donate to Toys for Tots. All agreed that the event was a success and FUN! Thanks to Joel and Alyssa Simon for the crafts ideas and their work with our wonderful kids, Dr. Jeff Hawtof for his musical direction, Beth Cohen for leading us in the candle lighting, Anita Smulyan and Bea Horn for their baking expertise, Fran and Mike Saltzman for schlepping the toys, Lucy Mehl for the wonderful candy dreidels, and most of all to Carole Ash for catering the lunch and the idea for this event.

Food, Clothing, Toiletries NeededPlease help us stock SJC’s storeroom with

non-perishable food, gently used coats and clothing, or new toiletries for the

needy. So many in our area are in need. Bring these items with you when you

come to SJC and put them in the wicker basket at the top of the stairs.

The Community Service Committee will pick up your donated items and deliver

them to local service organizations. Thank you and please help!

slander or lashon hara from passing our lips. With contemplative speech, we make an effort to take time for silence so we can hear our innermost thoughts. The time for the second Thursday class in March, April, May, and June will change to 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.Mussar is a popular area of Jewish study and spiritual practice. Led by Beth Cohen, each month we explore one middah and look at practices that can be used to assist us as we work to incorporate these virtues into our way of being. Previous knowledge of or experience with Mussar is not required. You need not have participated in prior sessions to come.Third Thursday: What Matters to JewsOn January 15, Lior Ron, the Community Shlicha for the Jewish Federation of Delaware will present a program about Israeli Society and its internal conflicts. She will discuss the Haredim versus secular Israel, and the politics of the Israeli Left and Right. The Shlicha is a youth emissary sent to Delaware through a partnership of the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Jewish Federation, with the purpose of strengthening the Delaware community’s connection to Israel and the Israeli people. This topic is very topical, considering that the Knesset has been dissolved and Israeli elections are to be held in March. Refreshments will be served. On February 19, we will screen “My Promised Land: The Tragedy and Triumph of Israel,” a DVD in the “Live from NY’s 92nd Street Y” Program. In the film, Ari Shavit, a Haaretz senior correspondent, joins New Yorker editor David Remnick for an incisive analysis of the Jewish state’s fraught

Alfred Gross Speaker SoughtThe Adult Education Committee is asking for SJC member suggestions for a possible speaker for the 2015 Alfred Gross Memorial Lecture in

June 2015. The topic must be related to Jewish life or culture. If you want

to make a suggestion, you should have some first-hand knowledge of the speaker, his or her topic, and style of presentation. Direct

such suggestions to Ira Wexler at: [email protected].

Talkfest ThursdaysMeetings are at 7:30 p.m. at SJC. All are invited.First Thursday: Jewish HistoryOn January 8 (on the 2nd Thursday), we continue our exploration of the Hebrew Bible by viewing a DVD and discussing Genesis 21-22, the story of Isaac. God decides to test Abraham. What moral judgment should be made concerning Abraham? Sacrifice was as common in antiquity as television is today. Why did it become less common, and is it something that has been has been replaced or should be revived? Why might Judaism have chosen this passage as the Rosh Hashanah reading? Then on February 5, we will discuss Genesis 25-36, the Jacob Saga. To what extent are the patriarchal sagas profitably compared with folktales? Can, or should, various stories in Genesis be seen as funny? What delight might the original audience have found in them? In oral presentation? Do the accounts of Esau (as well as Ishmael) indicate an ambivalent relationship between Israel and its neighbors? Does Israel regard these other nations as “in the family”?Second Thursday: A Taste of MussarA Taste of Mussar continues in 2015 with some adjustments to the schedule. The class will not meet in January (instead Jewish History will meet on January 8). On February 12, at 7:30 p.m., we will review our experiences with the virtue/soul trait (middah) of Enthusiasm/Passion and begin a discussion on the middah of Silence. There are two forms of this middah–Careful Speech and Contemplative Speech. In careful speech, we work to keep gossip and

history and its prospects for the future. “My Promised Land” is Shavit’s best-selling 2013 book. A new chapter of Israel’s future is being written now, in the run-up to the March Knesset elections. See Shavit express his views, then express yours about him, about his book, and about the promised land. Refreshments will be available.Fourth Thursday: Pirkei AvotOn January 22, we resume our discussion of Chapter Four of Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers). Pirkei Avot is the only Talmud tractate dealing solely with ethical and moral principles. During the January class and continuing in the February 26 class, we will finish the chapter. One of the many chain of thoughts we’ve been discussing is the nature and definition of Evil. What is it? How do the Rabbis of the Pirkei Avot and we present day Jews describe and understand the phenomena of Evil? Come to the class and take part in this open ended, interactive, fully inclusive discussion. All opinions are respected. No previous study is necessary or required. If possible, but not required, bring a Pirkei Avot book.

George, who hails from Brooklyn, recently relocated from Bethesda to Lewes, where Mary Helms and he now live. George has been a member of SJC and of the Adult Education Committee since fall 2013. Years ago, he served on the Board of the Non-Affiliated School for Jewish Family Education, in Montgomery County, MD. George is active in the business world as an advisor to information services companies worldwide. Mary and George are also actively engaged in educational programs to foster interfaith and interreligious dialogue to achieve understanding and common purposes. Earlier this year, they hosted their friend Brandeis Professor Ed Kaplan to give a talk in Rehoboth Beach on interfaith and interreligious initiatives of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who was Ed’s mentor, and of Aleph founder Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. Together, Mary and George have 13 grandchildren living in Northern Virginia, Pennsylvania and England. The Committee invites your suggestions, involvement and feedback on any matters related to adult education. George invites you to connect directly with him at [email protected] or 302-644-2072.

Oy Vey, 5K!Get ready to run, walk, cook, volunteer, or help in any way. SJC is proud to announce the 3rd annual Oy Vey 5K event will take place on April 12 at 8 a.m.at SJC. We are so excited for the race to be bigger and better than ever. If you are willing and able to help plan the race, contact Joel Simon at 302-245-1386 or [email protected].

SJC Resource Center- Miriam ZadekThis month’s Adult Education Committee’s book interest is “The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit” by Lucette Lagnado, published by Ecco/HarperCollins, winner of the 2008 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature. The book is riveting. Lagnado, forced with her family to go into exile from Cairo in 1963, documents the cost of exile, focusing on her father’s experience. Like numerous other exiles, he finds life in the U.S. bereft of the luxurious life style he led as a bon vivant in Egypt. Nothing here compares, and dependency on Jewish support agencies only deepens his despair. This memoir is moving in its details of loss individuals within the family may feel, as they try to accommodate to new status. This book is available through The Delaware Library System. Questions and comments may be addressed to Miriam Zadek at [email protected].

New Adult Ed Committee ChairAfter seven years of accomplished service as Co-Chairs of the SJC Adult Education Committee, Karen and Ira Wexler are handing off the post to George Beckerman. SJC owes much appreciation to Karen and Ira (and their many committee members) for taking the program to the next level. The sheer volume of events that Adult Ed hosts is astonishing, from small classes to larger public events. Thank you so much, Karen and Ira!George wants to let the membership know that he is privileged to be starting his term as Chair. “I am grateful that Karen and Ira will continue as committee members,” he said. “The other Committee members, all experienced, are: Anita Smulyan, Burt Brenman, Miriam Zadek, Myra Kramer, Renata Price, Sam Smulyan, and, of course, Beth Cohen.”The Committee’s goal is to meet congregational educational needs and support SJC Jewish Community’s Values (See our website under About Us). The Committee produces about 50 events each year, including regular Thursday night events and special events such as the Annual Alfred Gross Memorial Lecture. The Committee is especially excited about the Inaugural Memorial Dorothy Brecher Forum on Social Justice which is being planned in collaboration with the parents of our Religious School students, and the upcoming presentation by Chimes CEO and SJC member Marty Lampner on his company’s social services work in Israel and Delaware.

SJC Gives BackSJC made its annual end of year donations to seven groups as part of its efforts to engage in Tikun Olum, repairing the world and doing acts of loving kindness. Each year, on behalf of the entire SJC community, the Community Service Committee reviews local non-profits and Jewish organizations from around the world. The committee invites groups to present their programs and needs, and then makes a recommendation to the Board of Directors as to where the donations should be made. The donations made by SJC come from the committee’s budgeted amount for donations, as well as from donations SJC members make during the year to the Community Service Committee. The organizations supported by SJC in 2014 are:The Community Resource Center serves as a centralized location to help meet the needs of Sussex County, DE, residents facing crisis. They are actively working in the Middle East, South Asia, and the U.S. The program began in 1993 with 46 American, Egyptian, Israeli and Palestinian teenagers and has expanded to their current network of over 5000 Seeds. The Cancer Support Community is an international organization with more than 150 affiliates in local communities, including one in Rehoboth Beach. The CSC was formed in 2009 by the merger of the Wellness Community and Gilda’s Club to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. In addition, SJC received a number of donations this year given in memory of Dorothy Brecher, a member of the Community Service Committee since its inception. SJC made the following donations in Dorothy’s memory. The West Rehoboth Land Trust is a local group that assists residents of the West Rehoboth neighborhood to maintain their ability to live in an area of rapid expansion and rising property values.Mazon, the first national organization to rally the American Jewish community around the issue of hunger, continues to work to end hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds in the United States and Israel. Many thanks to those who have contributed to the Community Service Committee Donation Program. The story takes place in Delaware, throughout the Mid-Atlantic, and in 17 locations in Israel.SJC member Marty Lampner, President and CEO of Chimes International, will introduce us to Chimes, which began 67 years ago as a small school for children with disabilities. It is now a multi-service agency providing innovative education, training, employment supports, behavioral health and residential support to more than 19,000 special needs children and adults.Marty will tell us about Chimes Delaware, which recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary, and how it helped pave the way for Chimes to begin providing services to people with disabilities in Israel. And we’ll hear from Marty about what he is bringing back from Israel to better help the most vulnerable segment of our own U.S. population to live their lives to the fullest. Marty will also detail some simple, yet meaningful, ways people volunteer with Chimes and support the important work the organization does. Please let George Beckerman know if you’ll be attending. You can reach him at [email protected].
