Surface Data Logging from Sperry Drilling Services provides aneffective means of capturing and monitoring critical drilling data, soyou can use information proactively to keep things moving, even inthe most challenging wells. Providing the first line of defense SDLspecialists monitor the drilling conditions to identify andcommunicate any hazardous or unusual conditions and ensurethe surface equipment is operating correctly.

Surface Data Logging also provides the platform for a range ofspecialist services that utilize many of these measurements, including LaserStrat Chemostratigraphy, ADT® DrillingOptimization, StrataSteer® 3D geosteering services and PerformanceDrilling solutions. The information provided by SDL enhances theability to improve drilling practices, accelerate the learning curveand significantly reduce downtime

ADT® drilling optimization service - powerful tools for complexwells. Many of the software and hardware tools used by SperryDrilling Services’ to perform detailed pre-, while and post-drillinganalysis and optimization can be provided through SDL. Theseadvanced systems when operated by SDL specialists enable a morepowerful monitoring and first alert capability as well complexity andchallenge increase.

Details of the ADT drilling optimization service that addressesDrillstring Integrity, Hydraulics Management and WellboreIntegrity can be provided by your Sperry Drilling Services salesrepresentative.

Reducing response time to unexpected events, Sperry’s SurfaceData Logging services can provide the ADT® drilling OptimisationEarly Warning System and Connection Flow Monitoring. Theseservices give the means to recognize patterns and respond rapidly toany unforeseen change in the drilling fluid circulating system.

This is coupled with SDL monitoring of safety-critical data such asmud total gas content, H2S and evidence of wellbore fluid influx, aswell as drilling mud loss indicators such as pit volume, mud weight, mud temperature and mud flow in and out are all monitoredcontinuously for any sign of trouble.

An unexpected fluid influx or kick does pose serious safety concerns– not to mention increased costs. Mud losses to the formation canslow the drilling progress and damage the reservoir. Hole washout orballooning can compromise wellbore quality.

Detecting fluid influx and mud losses while circulating, the EarlyWarning System immediately alerts operators to flow changes, andidentifies washouts or restrictions in the system, as well as hole“breathing” or ballooning, so you can take action to avert trouble.

Understand Drilling Dynamics. An important tool in the ADTservice drillstring integrity tool kit is the DrilSaver™ III vibrationmonitoring system. This system can be supplied through SDL toprovide a warning when high levels of torsional vibration arepresent. DrilSaver™ III software measures the magnitude of torsionalvibration in the drillstring. This is achieved through the high

frequency sampling and frequency analysis of drilling torque,RPM hookload and standpipe pressure. The result of theanalysis known as KT, the torsional vibration magnitude, iscontinuously monitored and displayed in a simple gauge format. This allows the driller to vary drilling parameters to correctharmful vibration levels. In addition to real-time feedback,DrilSaver stores the KT signal in the InSite database forcorrelation against depth, time, lithology or other parameters. The program also generates a high-frequency burst data thatcan be saved to disk for post-event analysis with DrilSaverPlayback software.

Another application from the ADT service drillstring integritytool kit is the Real-time WHIRL™ software. It calculates criticalrotary speeds that induce harmonic vibration in the drillstring. The WHIRL™ software can be supplied through SDL to help thedriller ensure the drilling parameters are set to avoid damagingresonant vibration.

Know Your Formation Pressure. Surface Data Loggingprovides pore pressure, overburden and fracture pressureanalysis using industry standard methods. From the planningphase through drilling operations to post-well analysis, accurateprediction of estimated formation pressure is essential to safedrilling. In wells around the world, formation pressure problemsresult in NPT that vastly increases expenditures, costingoperators millions of dollars annually.

Advanced real-time pore pressure prediction services aresupplied through the ADTWellbore Integrity service.

Particularly critical for high pressure and high temperature wells,Connection Flow Monitor “fingerprints” circulating systemresponse during connections and flow checks to closely monitor forany influx. It provides rapid response to the influx before it wouldnormally be detected, and enables the influx to be managed beforeit can cause safety problems or NPT.

Surface Data Logging services deliver a better level ofreservoir understanding, using rapid gas analysis andformation sampling and evaluation to provide accuratedescriptions of critical geological markers, the presence andtype of hydrocarbons, plus Digital Cuttings Imaging thatbrings the details into focus.

The Fast-Gas system provides hydrocarbon analysis usingour own enhanced version of the latest gas chromatographtechnology, so you get C1 through C5 analysis in less thanone minute. Multi-point calibration improves accuracy, while multiple overlapping chromatogram display providesbetter quality control and trend analysis. Dynamic baselineadjustments for each gas component are automaticallyperformed by the InSite system.

Gas analysis, along with cuttings lithology and availableMWD data, can be correlated with drilling parameters andreference material through Sperry’s extensive formationsampling and evaluation services, which also includegas-in-mud analysis, calcimeter results, bulk density, cuttings gas, and luminescence fingerprinting.

EAGLE gas system, In addition to traditional gas trapslocated in the header tank, Surface Data Logging has alsointroduced a constant volume and temperature gasextraction system that will pump a drilling fluid samplefrom as close to the bell nipple as possible to a skid mountedprocessing module. The system will heat a known quantityof drilling fluid to a known temperature before liberatingthe gasses from the fluid in a consistent manor. This willensure that “heavy” hydrocarbon gas compounds areliberated for analysis and that the measurement is moreconsistent for comparison from well to well. Detecting theheavy hydrocarbon compounds enables much morepowerful analysis of the gas ratios to be performed.

For close-up visual examination of cuttings samples andcore chips at the wellsite, Digital Cuttings Imaging makes itpossible to capture and view detailed images using digitalmicroscopes that combine the capabilities of a traditionalbinocular microscope with a modern digital camera.

Accurate Formation andReservoir Evaluation

Page 9: SDL_Brochure

Cataloged by well, cuttings images can be embedded on well logs toaid identification of changes in formation, or may be used fortraining. And because they’re digital, they can be viewed in real timefor onsite analysis, or transmitted electronically for viewing byremote personnel, providing maximum functionality, so you get thefull picture.

Advanced wellsite geology services can be provided whenformation evaluation is either particularly demanding or yourspecialists are not available. The Wellsite Geologist from Sperry is avery experienced specialist who will have many years experienceinterpreting geological data in the area of interest. The Geologistsupervises all aspects of geological data acquisition includingcuttings sample description, reporting and interpretation of drillingdata, drilling gas data, core data, LWD and wireline logging data anddrafting of composite logs. The Geologist continuously monitorsoffset well data, is responsible for picking core point and casingsetting points and reports on potential drilling hazards as well asacting as focal point at the wellsite for all geological information.

When precise borehole positioning or geosteering cannot beaccomplished by conventional methods, such as LWD orbiostratigraphy, LaserStrat® chemostratigraphy offers an innovativeand dependable alternative.

Providing “geochemical fingerprinting” in near real-time at thewellsite, the LaserStrat specialist utilizes a small portable laserspectrometer to rapidly measure the whole-rock chemistry ofcuttings. This provides signatures of each stratigraphic unit whenpaleontology markers are absent or non-definitive, and facilitatesbetter drilling decisions.

Even in horizontal and HT/HP applications where other steeringmethods fail, LaserStrat can deliver enhanced stratigraphic controlfor precise wellbore placement.

Details of the Stratasteer geosteering service can be provided by yourSperry Drilling Services representative.

LaserStrat Chemosteering® Service:A Horizontal Success Story

Encountering a fault of undefined displacementaer 400 meters of horizontal drilling, oneoperator chose LaserStrat chemostratigraphy-while-drilling service to decide whether asidetrack was warranted.

When the LaserStrat data showed that drillingupward just five meters would position thewellbore back in the porosity zone, the shallowgas well was successfully chemosteered® to TDwithout a costly sidetrack or abandonment.

Used for chemosteering in subsequent wells, thefault information revealed by the LaserStratservice precisely guided wellbore placementthat more than doubled gas production in thethird well.
