Class context/Learners:

To be added by class teacher

Achievement Standards:

By the end of Year Six, students can express an understanding of various Biblical images of the Holy Spirit. Students describe and explain how the Holy Spirit gives courage to the disciples2 and to people today. They listen, read, and recount key scripture that tells of the early Christian communities. Students compare different understandings of Mary in scripture, images and titles.

By the end of Year Six, students explain the meaning of and how they experience the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit3. Students creatively communicate information on Spirit-filled people. Students communicate ways they can be signs of life, hope, healing, nourishment, reconciliation, and service. Students demonstrate understanding of symbols, seasons and feasts of the liturgical year.

By the end of Year Six, students research key figures in the Bible, for example, Peter and Paul. Students demonstrate ways to respond to those in need. Students explain the implications of and give suggestions for the continuation the mission of Jesus today.

By the end of Year Six, students can understand and say, in unison and individually, a number of traditional prayers including Hail Holy Queen and a decade of the Glorious mysteries of the Rosary. They identify, explore and compose various kinds of psalms – psalms of lament, thanksgiving and praise.

Key Inquiry Questions:

How is the Holy Spirit described in the Bible?

What are some of the images of the Holy Spirit in the Bible?

What do some of these images mean to me?

I Wonder:

I wonder about the Holy Spirit.

I wonder how to describe the Holy Spirit.

Images of wind and fire helped the people of the Old Testament and the early Christian community express their experience of the presence of God.

The action of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers is described in Scripture using a variety of images and symbols.

The interpretation of some experiences of the Spirit of God can vary due to the context in which the Scripture was written.

Students typically will identify some of the symbols and images of the Holy Spirit found in Scripture. e.g.

Using the Worlds of the Text with 3 keys for Meaning.

Begin with the text - World of the Text

Read the text from the bible and identify its literary form. Knowing its literary form directs you to the kind of truth it carries and, therefore, how you are to interpret what you read.

look at where the story occurs in the whole of the Gospel.

Look behind the Text - Worlds behind the Text when reading the text identify words, practices, places etc that will help develop an understanding of the time the author wrote and

the time the author was writing about.

Use three keys for meaning - World in Front of the Text

3 Keys for Meaning What is the author trying to say about:

Good News Translation (GNT) (The Breakthrough Bible)

Exodus 24:15-18

15 Moses went up Mount Sinai, and a cloud covered it. 16-17 The dazzling light of the LORD's presence came down on the mountain. To the Israelites the light looked like a fire burning on top of the mountain. The cloud covered the mountain for six days, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from the cloud. 18 Moses went on up the mountain into the cloud. There he stayed for forty days and nights.

Exodus 33:7-11

7 Whenever the people of Israel set up camp, Moses would take the sacred Tent and put it up some distance outside the camp. It was called the Tent of the LORD's presence, and anyone who wanted to consult the LORD would go out to it. 8 Whenever Moses went out there, the people would stand at the door of their tents and watch Moses until he entered it. 9 After Moses had gone in, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the door of the Tent, and the LORD would speak to Moses from the cloud. 10 As soon as the people saw the pillar of cloud at the door of the Tent, they would bow down. 11 The LORD would speak with Moses face-to-face, just as someone speaks with a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp. But the young man who was his helper, Joshua son of Nun, stayed in the Tent.

Exodus 40:34-38 34 Then the cloud covered the Tent and the dazzling light of the LORD's presence filled it. 35 Because of this, Moses could not go into the Tent. 36 The Israelites moved their camp to another place only when the cloud lifted from the Tent. 37 As long as the cloud stayed there, they did not move their camp. 38 During all their wanderings they could see the cloud of the LORD's presence over the Tent during the day and a fire burning above it during the night.

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) (The Catholic Youth Bible)

Exodus 24:15-18

15 Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16 The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. 17 Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. 18 Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

Exodus 33:7-11

7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp; he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the LORD would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. 8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise and stand, each of them, at the entrance of their tents and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. 9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses. 10 When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise and bow down, all of them, at the entrance of their tent. 11 Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then he would return to the camp; but his young assistant, Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the tent.

Exodus 40:34-38 34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled upon it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 36 Whenever the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, the Israelites would set out on each stage of their journey; 37 but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day that it was taken up. 38 For the cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, before the eyes of all the house of Israel at each stage of their journey.

Luke 9: 28-36

28 About a week after he had said these things, Jesus took Peter, John, and James with him and went up a hill to pray. 29 While he was praying, his face changed its appearance, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly two men were there talking with him. They were Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in heavenly glory and talked with Jesus about the way in which he would soon fulfill God's purpose by dying in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were sound asleep, but they woke up and saw Jesus' glory and the two men who were standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, how good it is that we are here! We will make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (He did not really know what he was saying.)34 While he was still speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them with its shadow; and the disciples were afraid as the cloud came over them. 35 A voice said from the cloud, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen—listen to him!”36 When the voice stopped, there was Jesus all alone. The disciples kept quiet about all this and told no one at that time anything they had seen.

Luke 9: 28-3628 Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings,[h] one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen;[i] listen to him!” 36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

Good News Translation (GNT) (The Breakthrough Bible)

Luke 3:21 – 22 – The Baptism of Jesus

21 After all the people had been baptized, Jesus also was baptized. While he was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit came down upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with you.”

New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) (The Catholic Youth Bible)

Luke 3:21 – 22 – The Baptism of Jesus 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

John 7:37-39

37 On the last and most important day of the festival Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, “Whoever is thirsty should come to me, and 38 whoever believes in me should drink. As the scripture says, ‘Streams of life-giving water will pour out from his side.’” 39 Jesus said this about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were going to receive. At that time the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not been raised to glory.

John 7:37-39

37 On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38 and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit,[c] because Jesus was not yet glorified.

1 Tuning In – What do I know about the Holy Spirit?

Using the “Pass it on” strategy, students in groups (of 4-6) write individually what they know about the Holy Spirit on a piece of paper. When the teacher says, “Pass it on”, students pass their writing to the next person. They read what has been passed onto them and continue writing on their neighbour’s writing until the next “pass it on”. At the end, students share one item or sentence.

Assessment of prior learning

2 Concept web – The Holy Spirit

You could use a concept web to record the students’ ideas.

A-Z Learning Strategies p 26

3 What can we learn about the Holy Spirit from the Bible?

Ask the students where they predict they will first find the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Bible. (They could jot down their answer eg page …)

Then start watching the beginning of the following clip from The Bible Project on the Holy Spirit: http://viewpure.com/oNNZO9i1Gjc?start=0&end=0 Stop the video after only 8 seconds, and ask the students to find the first book of the bible, Genesis, the first chapter and the first two sentences:

In the beginning, when God created the universe,  the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the Spirit of God

was moving over the water.

What do you imagine when you hear the words “the Spirit of God was moving over the water”?

The Spirit of God is like …

4 Scripture: Genesis 1:1-2 & Genesis 2:4-75

Teacher Background Reading:

Who wrote the text? We don’t know. It is obviously not an eyewitness account of what was happening on earth before human beings were created.

When was it written? It was shaped in the time when the Jewish people were captives in Babylon. Sometime after 587BC.

Who was the audience of the text? The Jewish people who were exiles and captives in a foreign land.

What do you know of the cultural, historical and political context of the author? Their homeland had been conquered. The Babylonians had many gods. Their stories of the creation of human beings by their gods were quite violent.

5 These texts are quite difficult to explain to the students so teachers would need to do considerable preparation and provide scaffolding to assist the students. Teachers can choose to use only the New Testament texts in this unit.

6 Ask the students to watch this video once more and see what other ideas they hear or see about the Holy Spirit: http://viewpure.com/oNNZO9i1Gjc?start=0&end=0

The Spirit is the way that the biblical authors talk about God’s Personal Presence. The Hebrew word Ruakh means wind, breath, energy. God’s Spirit sustains all of life. God’s Spirit gives special empowerment to people for special tasks eg Joseph,

Bezelar, prophets. The Spirit comes to transform the human heart – to empower people to truly love God

and others. God's Spirit rests on Jesus and empowers him to heal and forgive sin. God’s Spirit is at work when he was raised from the dead. Jesus breathed on the disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit”. The Spirit came on all the disciples. The Spirit points people to Jesus. The Bible ends with the picture of a new humanity.

These ideas could be added to the concept web.

7 Scripture Exodus 24:15-18, Exodus 33:7-11 Exodus 40:34-38

Use the story probe strategy to delve deeper into the text.

In groups, students read one of the three texts from the Bible. You might like to invite the children to work with a partner or in a small group.

The teacher could use questions from the worlds of the text:

Who are the characters in the text? Who speaks and who is silenced? What happens in the text? What words are interesting, new or difficult and need explaining?

This task could form part of the assessment portfolio for this unit.

Assessment of Learning

9 Scripture Luke 3:1-2 The Baptism of Jesus

Discuss with the class where the story of the Baptism of Jesus is placed in the Gospel of Luke (the Lukan Frieze would be helpful for this task).

The story wheel strategy could help the students to retell the story.

Note that in this account Jesus is baptised as one among the crowd. The voice from heaven is directed at Jesus. The Holy Spirit descends like a dove. Why do they think the Spirit is described as descending like a dove.

This Scripture study could be linked with the English curriculum and its references to metaphor (and similes).

Assessment for Learning

10 Reflect on the different symbols of the Holy Spirit observed so far.

Ask the students to consider why the Scriptural authors may have used these different symbols when describing the Holy Spirit.

Add information to another puzzle piece in the Holy Spirit jigsaw, or to the concept map with information obtained during the lesson.

11 Scripture John 7: 37-39

Students using the Think Pad Strategy to analyse and break open the Scriptural passage.

Background information for the Teacher:

In the Old Testament, there are several references where the prophets speak of God “pouring out” the Spirit on the people eg Isaiah 32:15, Ezekiel 39:29, Joel 2:28-29.

In Ezekiel 47:1-11 there is the image of life-giving water flowing from the Temple. The prophet Zechariah in 14:8 refers to “living waters” flowing from Jerusalem. pouring out from the temple, the centre of the world and giving life wherever it flows.

In this text, Jesus names himself as the living water. He is the ultimate source and he shares the Spirit with those who believe. St Paul also refers to those who have been baptised as “drinking” of the one Spirit in 1 Cor 12:13.

What questions do you have now?

Was there an “aha” moment? What was it?

12 Do images or symbols or descriptions of the Holy Spirit change over time?

Prepare an interview regarding images, symbols or descriptions of the Holy Spirit. Interview a parent, grandparent, priest, religious brother or sister, principal, APRE, parishioner, relative or friend. Record the answers to your questions.

Questions might include:

- Name:- Date:- What did you think about the Holy Spirit when you were a young child?- What do you think about the Holy Spirit now?- What words would you use to describe the Holy Spirit now?

Share these interviews with the class and add them to the wall display. Note any new images of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the interviews.

Teachers could adapt this worksheet from Expressions Book 6 Topic 3 p 38. Maurice Ryan.

13 Images of the Holy Spirit from everyday life

Symbols or images of the Holy Spirit can be found in everyday life. Explore some of the images thinking about what they are used for and how they could be a reminder of God. Think of several additional examples.

Objects: umbrella, mobile phone, life jacket, torch

Description / Uses:

How is it a reminder of the Holy Spirit?

This task gives the children the opportunity to apply the knowledge that they have gained during this unit to a modern context.

This task could form part of the assessment portfolio for this unit.

18 Indigenous Perspective

Invite the students to read Living the Gospel, Spirit of Wind, Fire and Water. Have the students reflect upon what meaning this has for us today. (This text can be found at the end of the unit.)

The Sun is here for the belief of the Aboriginal People that it sustains life.

The Light Blue is for the wind.

The spirit figure is flowing from the fire and the story teller in the minds of the children as they learn about their culture and history.

The red background is for fire.

The idea of the field of flowers is to represent the purity of this event that is happening and also a rebirth of understanding and awareness

The blue background represents water.

The concentric circles represent fire places or campsites and waterholes.

The 'U' shapes represent people sitting cross legged.

This is the old storyteller sitting at the fire with a group of children telling of the creation spirit.

19 Symbols of the Holy Spirit

It is time to put this learning together. As a class we have encountered a variety of ways in which the Scripture authors have described of the Holy Spirit – fire, cloud, dove, water etc

Choose one or more symbols of the Holy Spirt to create a presentation for your prayer room or younger students.

Students may like to create an iMovie, a text in Book Creator, a PowerPoint presentation or an infographic for example to show their understanding of the Holy Spirit. Students may need to complete some additional research. The following sites may be of assistance:

21 Praying to the Holy Spirit

Pray: Come O Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy God’s consolations. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen
