The opponent being SCREENED may be STATIONARY or MOVING.

Some SCREENS are from the FRONT or SIDE of the opponent and the SCREENER can be SEEN by the opponent. This a VISUALSCREEN.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE SCREENER, Continued……….

Some SCREENS are from BEHIND the opponent and the SCREENER can NOT be seen by the opponent. This a BLIND SCREEN.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE SCREENER, Continued……….

When SCREENING an opponent using a VISUAL SCREEN…the SCREENER may be as close to the opponent as he/she desires…SHORT OF CONTACT.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE SCREENER, Continued……….

When SCREENING an opponent using a BLIND SCREEN…the SCREENER must allow the opponent ONE NORMAL STEP BACKWARDS WITHOUT CONTACT.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE SCREENER, Continued……….

When SCREENING a MOVING opponent, the SCREENER must allow the opponent an opportunity to AVOID contact.

This opportunity is called: TIME & DISTANCE. (This DISTANCE need NOT be more than TWO Strides)

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE SCREENER, Continued……….

When SCREENING an opponent who is MOVING IN THE SAME PATH AND DIRECTION as the SCREENER is moving…the OPPONENT is responsible for contact if the SCREENER slows up or stops.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE SCREENER, Continued……….

There is NO SUCH THING as a MOVING SCREEN FOUL, if there is NO CONTACT.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE SCREENER, Continued……….

The SCREENER may NOT move to maintain the SCREEN. In other words…if the SCREENER IS MOVING…the SCREEN CANNOT be legal.(with the one above exception)

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE OPPONENT

A player who is SCREENED within his/her VISUAL field is expected to avoid contact by going around the SCREENER.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE OPPONENT, Continued……….

A player who receives a BLIND SCREEN may make inadvertent contact with the SCREENER. And…if the opponent is moving rapidly, the contact may be severe. In fact…BY RULE…sometimes the most severe contact in the game is INCIDENTAL CONTACT.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE OPPONENT, Continued……….

Inadvertent contact is to be ruled as INCIDENTAL CONTACT if the opponent stops or attempts to stop on contact and moves around the SCREEN.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE OPPONENT, Continued……….

If the SCREENER has the ball and the inadvertent contact displaces the SCREENER…a foul would be called instead of traveling.

SCREENING

POINTS TO REMEMBER REGARDING THE OPPONENT, Continued……….

A player may NOT use the arms, hands, hips or shoulders to force his/her way through a SCREEN or to hold the SCREENER and then push the SCREENER aside in order to maintain a guarding position on an opponent.
