The Brightspace product suite has been redesigned using the Brightspace Daylight Experience. This new design provides increased visual appeal including new fonts, icons, colors, and simpler formatting. There have been changes to improve responsive navigation for mobile devices, tablets, and other narrow displays. Applications and tools now have a consistent look and feel with a focus on learning activities.



The Daylight Experience also features a new My Courses widget that provides a responsive tile-based layout and a new image library that contains over 3000 images.

The Brightspace Daylight Experience features are now optimized for production environments when using the Google Chrome or Apple Safari browsers. The core tools and workflows in Brightspace Learning Environment have been tested extensively on these two browsers. In the coming months, D2L will continue to make updates across the product suite that reflect Daylight design and will continue to optimize the Daylight Experience in other browser environments. Turning on Daylight does not modify your content or other settings in Brightspace. All workflows and features in the Brightspace Daylight experience are available on all supported browsers; however, D2L is continuing to optimize performance and improve page load times on browsers other than Chrome and Safari. If you turn on the Brightspace Daylight Experience to do some testing, you can turn off the configuration setting to restore your site to the original look and feel.

Daylight Experience - Improvements to the My Courses widget | Updatedconfigurationvariables,lookfeel,rolepermissions,toolchange,usersonly,workflow

The My Courses widget has been improved in the following ways:

Improved ability to search for courses.

Relevant courses automatically display in the widget for most users. Based on your enrollments and Course Access options, up to 12 current and future courses automatically display in the widget. Users with more than 12 current and future courses that have not manually pinned at least one course continue to see a banner message to remind them to pin their courses using the options in the View All Courses page. The widget does not override any choice a user has made to specifically pin or unpin a course.



If you have See Course Info permission for courses that aren't current or active, the My Courses widget now displays course start dates, course end dates, and course inactive states.

If a course is inactive but has started, the course tile has a yellow dot in the top right corner. A banner displays in the widget indicating to the instructor that students are not able to access inactive courses.

If you have See Course Info permission turned on for an org unit, the Course Offering information page is available as an option on the course context menu. Instructors can use this information page to quickly change a setting such as the course active state.



Course titles in the My Courses widget now display a total count of the unread course updates, including unread discussion posts, ungraded quiz attempts, unattempted quizzes, unread assignment submissions, and assignment submissions with unread feedback. If the total count is more than 99 items, the number appears as 99+ on the title. If you do not want to display all the unread items, you can turn on or turn off these settings in the My Courses widget settings.

Daylight Experience - Logos on department and course level navbars | Newlookfeel,organizationwide

Clients can now apply navbar logos at all org unit levels using the active navbar and theme. This feature allows institutions to showcase different logos at the org, department, course, and custom org unit level. Clients can also configure the org unit name to appear in addition to the logo, except on the org navbar (which always hides the name), and course navbar (which always shows the name)



The logo is pulled from the Left Logo field in the active navbar's current theme. If the logo's link destination is not My Home, a My

Home icon ( ) appears in addition to the logo.

The Org Unit Name appears in the Course Offering navbars, as in past releases. In addition, the org unit name appears in the course navbar on course offerings, and in other org unit levels if the navbar and theme are configured to display it. The Org Unit name is not displayed at the organization level.

Slight impact to administrators due to change in appearance of logo appearing at all org unit levels and new My Home icon for logos that do not go to the user's homepage.


If you want the org unit name to appear on other org unit levels, you must configure the currently-used navbar and theme to include the org unit name.

The grade exemption workflow in Grades has been updated to allow instructors to exempt learners from multiple grade items at one time, through the use of multi-select check boxes.

The Content Service is a new underlying service that will house future Brightspace content. It currently provides and standardizes functions such as import/export, storage, preview, permissions, and basic search of SCORM objects in the Brightspace platform. By default, the Content Service is off and administrators must enable it for their organization.

By default, the Content Service is off. To enable the Content Service, administrators must do the following:

Turn on the d2l.Tools.ContentService.Endpoint configuration variable. Enter the appropriate URL corresponding to the AWS region, based on location (default is US region).IMPORTANT: Once the AWS region is specified and SCORM content is added, the region cannot be changed without data loss.

This release introduces further improvements to the new quizzing experience for True or False, Multiple Choice, Long Answer, and Short Answer quiz questions, which include the following:

If instructors opt out of the new quizzing experience, they are prompted to provide a reason why they are opting out.

An option has been added that enables users to save the current question and copy the content to a new question that can be edited.

Short Answer questions have been enhanced. Instructors can select the new Students must answer all blanks correctly grading option, which is an all or nothing grading option. Learners must answer all short answer questions accurately to receive marks.

Before instructors can use this feature, it must be configured by an administrator. In the Config Variable Browser, under Tools > Quizzes, the d2l.Tools.Quizzes.NewExperienceOpt-In configuration variable must be enabled.

You must have the d2l.Tools.Quizzes.NewExperienceOpt-In configuration variable set before you can use this feature and the new experience itself.

SCORM – New Brightspace SCORM solution | Newconfigurationvariables,lookfeel,rolepermissions,toolchange,workflow

A new SCORM solution is available for the Brightspace platform. It is turned off by default, but if administrators turn it on for their organization, it replaces the existing solution. The new features and improvements include the following:

Integrates a new, robust SCORM Engine and Content Player to support importing, playing, and tracking interaction data for all versions of SCORM.

Basic search capabilities of an instructor's own SCORM content.

Static and dynamic linking of SCORM objects, and linking to multiple courses.

Makes use of the new SCORM Engine to open and play SCORM objects in a new browser tab to optimize screen real estate, instead of objects playing inline as they do in the existing solution.

Equivalent navigation between the Brightspace Learning Environment interface and the SCORM interface, and between versions 1.2 and 2004 of SCORM objects.

Users are only marked for one attempt on the content when they open the SCORM object in full screen mode, instead of being marked for an additional attempt as they are in the existing solution. Additionally, SCORM objects in full screen no longer play over top of objects playing inline since in the new solution, SCORM objects automatically and only open and play in a new window.

Has its foundation in the new Content Service, which provides standardized content access and management.

Resides in AWS

The new SCORM solution still allows users to do the following:

Instructors can import, export, and copy courses that include course content and SCORM objects, both SCORM 1.2 and 2004.

Learners can play and interact with a course that includes course content and SCORM objects, both SCORM 1.2 and 2004.

Instructors can view high-level interaction data for their SCORM objects. In the future, more detailed interaction data will be available.

Instructors can connect SCORM objects with grade items that automatically enter into a grade book, if that functionality is enabled within their instance.

Administrators must do the following to enable the new SCORM solution:

Enable the Content Service by setting the d2l.Tools.ContentService.Endpoint configuration variable.

Enable the Content Service under Organization Tools.

Set the appropriate permissions for the Content Service and External Learning Tools.

Ensure that user roles that need to add or upload SCORM content have the IMS role of "Instructor", and roles that need to view content have the IMS role of "Learner".

1. In the Config Variable Browser, set the d2l.Tools.ContentService.Endpoint configuration variable to on and enter the URL for the appropriate region, according to your location (see the list in “Next Steps” in the Content Service release notes, and ensure that your choice is consistent with your organization’s requirements regarding data residency).

2. In Organization Tools, set the toggle for Content Service to on.

3. In Roles and Permissions, grant the appropriate permissions to instructors, that is, ensure they have the Content Service > Can add new SCORM objects, Can view SCORM objects, and Can view SCORM reports permissions, and the External Learning Tools > Manage External Learning Tools Links permission.

4. In Roles and Permissions, grant the appropriate permissions to learners, that is, ensure they have the Content Service > Can view SCORM objects permission.




Slight impact to instructors due to changes in some workflows within the new SCORM solution.

Existing SCORM content does not transfer to the new solution. Existing content remains where it is, and users interact with it in the same manner as before. If organizations choose to enable the new SCORM solution, all new content that is uploaded leverages the new capabilities and workflows.

Instructors require the Content Service > Can add new SCORM objects, Can view SCORM objects, and Can view SCORM reports permissions, and the External Learning Tools > Manage External Learning Tools Links permission.

Brightspace Learning Environment

PRB0054437Previously, if there was a cookie and a query string named GUID present and you attempted to log in to Brightspace Learning Environment using GUID SSO, you might have encountered an error.

Config Variable Browser

PRB0054327Previously, users could not download XLS/XLSX files from the Content tool (or any file type that did not display inline) unless they had the Download Content Topics permission for their role.

Now, users can download XLS/XLSX files from the Content tool (or any file type that does not display inline) without the Download Content Topics permission for their role.





1. Access Brightspace Learning Environment as an administrator.

2. Ensure that the learner role does not have the Content > Download Content Topics permission.

3. Add an XLS or XLSX file to Content.

4. As a learner, access the file in Content and notice that you cannot view it inline.

5. Attempt to download the file and observe that the file downloads successfully.

Customizations

PRB0053651Previously, when you attempted to generate a data export report and if the useCompression option was enabled, the data export report failed.

Discussions

PRB0053594Previously, when you added a post to a moderated Discussion topic that was linked to a content item, and when the moderator clicked Approve All Threads to approve the post, that content item was not flagged as complete.

Now, when you add a post to a moderated Discussion Topic that is linked to a content item, that content item is flagged as complete when your post is approved, as expected.


PRB0053554Previously, in Discussions with the Grid View option selected, if group filtered topics were enabled and you deleted a group or group category whose members had posted to discussion topics with group restrictions, the group information continued to display for each learner and there was no indication that the group was deleted.

Now, in Discussions with the Grid View and Threaded options selected, if group filtered topics are enabled and you delete a group or group category whose members have posted to discussion topics with group restrictions, instructors who have permission to access all groups can view all discussion threads that belong to the deleted group. There is also an indication that these threads belong to a deleted group. If you select the Grid View and Unthreaded options, this issue persists.




PRB0053761Previously, in Discussions, when the Users must start a thread before they can read and reply to other threads in each topic - Must Post To Participate condition was turned on, and if a user had not yet satisfied this condition, Brightspace Learning Environment reports included discussion posts that were not yet visible to the user.

Now, in Discussions, when this condition is turned on, and if a user has not yet satisfied it, Brightspace Learning Environment reports do not include discussion posts that are not yet visible to the user, as expected.


PRB0054106Previously, when the Discussions tool was turned off, or a user's role did not have any Discussions permissions set, the <tools_groups> tool was inaccessible.

Now, when the Discussions tool is turned off, or a user's role does not have any discussions permissions, the <tools_groups> tool is available. However, the discussions options from the <tools_groups> are unavailable.



1. Access a test course and on the navbar, select Course Admin.

2. Click Tools, and turn off the <tools_discussions> tool.

Assignments

Config Variable Browser

PRB0045431The Config Variable Browser allows the variable d2l.Tools.Grades.GradesList.NumbCharsToDisplay to have an override value that is above 50. If you create a text grade item and attempt to override the display options, it does not allow more than 50 characters despite the configuration variable accepting a larger value.



1. Log in to Brightspace Learning Environment and from the Admin Tools menu, select Config Variable Browser.

2. Search for d2l.Tools.Grades.GradesList.NumbCharsToDisplay, and select the variable.

3. Under Override Values, click Add Value.

4. Enter the Org Unit ID for your organization, adjust the Value so it is greater than 50, and click Save.

5. Access a test course, and on the navbar, click Grades.

6. On the Manage Grades page, from the New button, select Item.

7. Choose a Text grade item type, and enter a name.

8. Under Display Options, check the Override display options for this item check box.

9. Increase the number of characters to show for this grade item to be above 50, and click Save.



10. Observe the error, Show must be greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 50.

PRB0052082Search results displayed in the Config Variable Browser do not accurately display Effective Value or overrides made at the organization level.



1. In an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment, click Admin Tools, and select Config Variable Browser.

Content

PRB0052384Changes to content item due dates can cause duplicate events to appear in the Course Schedule for a few minutes.

As a workaround, wait 5 minutes and refresh the Full Schedule page and all inconsistencies should be resolved.



1. Access a test course that has at least 30 content items with future due dates set.

2. On the navbar, click Content.

3. Select a module, and from the Upload/Create button, select New Checklist.

4. Enter a title and description, and click Publish.

5. Click Add dates and restrictions, set the Due Date for 15 minutes from the current time, and click Update.

6. From the main Content page, click Course Schedule, and then click Full Schedule.

7. Ensure that the checklist created in the previous steps is included on page 1 and that multiple pages are available to load.

8. From the context menu of the new checklist, select Edit Event.

9. Change the due date so the checklist no longer appears on the first page in the Full Schedule list, and click Save.



10. Return to the main Content page, click Course Schedule, and then click Full Schedule.

11. Observe that the edited item may not appear, may appear in the wrong order, or may appear twice.

PRB0053848If you download large folders from Organization Files, internal errors might occur.

8. In the Customize Notifications pop-up, select Show notifications in minibar only, and click Subscribe.

9. End the impersonation of the instructor, access the Discussions tool, and start a new thread in the discussion topic.

10. Return to the Classlist tool and impersonate the instructor again.

11. Observe the subscription alert about the new thread.

12. End the impersonation of the instructor, access the Discussions tool, and delete the topic that the instructor is subscribed to.



13. Return to the Classlist tool and impersonate the instructor again.

14. Click Subscription alerts, and select the alert for the discussion topic.

15. Observe the internal error that is generated.

Document Viewer

Grades

PRB0047703If you update learner grade information using the space bar, it results in different behavior than if you use the Delete key. The space bar replaces the current grade with a 0, while the Delete key inserts a null grade.

1. Access the grade book in a test course that has learners enrolled.

2. From the New button, select Item.

3. Choose a Numeric type grade item, enter a name, and click Save and Close.

4. From the context menu of the new grade item, select Enter Grades.

5. Enter a grade for two of the enrolled learners and click Save.

6. Click Yes to confirm the changes.



7. Highlight one of the grades and use the space bar to remove it.

8. Highlight the other grade and use the Delete key to remove it.

9. Click Save and then Yes to confirm the changes.

10. Observe that the grade removed with the space bar displays a 0, while the grade removed with the Delete key is blank.

PRB0053731When you import .CSV files to the grade book of a class with at least 400 learners enrolled, you might encounter timeout errors.



1. Create a test course and enroll at least 400 learners.

Homepages

PRB0054060 (Daylight)Previously, when you edited homepages in Daylight, changes to widget properties were not saved despite a message that displayed stating the save was successful.

HTML Editor

PRB0052228If you create tables in the HTML editor with empty cells, there is no indication they are highlighted. When you merge cells, it can be difficult to determine which cells are selected. Note that this only affects empty cells. If the selected cells contain information, it shows as highlighted.




2. Click Announcements, and then New Announcement.

3. Click Insert Table, and create a 3x3 table.



4. Expand the table so the cells are easier to see, and attempt to highlight a row.

Instant Messages

PRB0045500When you send an instant message to multiple recipients, if one of the selected users does not have permission to access the instant message tool, the message fails to send to any recipients and an error displays. The error does not provide any indication as to which user(s) are preventing the message from being delivered.



1. Access a test course and ensure that you have multiple roles in Classlist.

2. Ensure that one role does not have the Access Pager permission and the other does.

3. From Classlist, select the check boxes next to the names of both users, and click Instant Message.

4. Observe the Internal Error message that displays.



Integrations

PRB0052192If you modify the dates of assignment submission folders that use Turnitin, assignment creation errors might occur on Turnitin.



1. Access a test course that has the Turnitin LTI integration available.

2. Ensure that the course does not have a start or end date.

3. On the navbar, click Assignments, and click New Submission Folder.

4. Enter a name, select the Turnitin tab, select the Enable Turnitin for this folder check box, and click More Options in Turnitin.

5. Observe that Turnitin uses a Start Date of yesterday and a Due Date of 6 months and 1 day in the future.

6. Close the pop-up window and click Save and Close to complete the creation of the assignment submission folder.

7. Edit the assignment submission folder created in the previous steps, and open the Restrictions tab.

8. Change the end date to be more than one day in the past, and click Save and Close.

9. Edit the assignment submission folder again, and access the Turnitin tab.

10. Click on More Options in Turnitin and observe the error that displays: Turnitin assignment could not be created. Due date must be after start date.

8. Click the points field, update the number to 5, and click Save.

9. Observe that the points for the question are now set to 5, as expected.

PRB0053954Quiz reports that are set up to display attempt duration only include attempt start and attempt end information when you generate them as CSV or Excel files.

As a workaround, generate an HTML Quiz report to view attempt duration information.



1. Access a test course with learners enrolled and on the navbar, click Quizzes.

2. Click New Quiz, enter a name, and click Add/Edit Questions.

3. Click New, and choose one of the available question types.

4. Complete the required fields, and click Save.



5. Click Done Editing Questions, and access the Restrictions tab.

6. Set the status of the quiz to active, and click Save and Close.

7. On the navbar, click Classlist, and impersonate a learner.

8. Complete the quiz you created in the previous steps.

9. End the impersonation of the learner.

10. Return to the Quizzes tool, and from the context menu of the quiz, select Edit.

11. Click Reports Setup, and then Add Report.

12. Enter a report name, select Attempt Details radio button, and select the Display attempt duration check box.

13. Click Save.

14. From the context menu of the quiz, select Reports, and click the report you created.

15. Click Generate CSV or Generate Excel and observe that the file includes attempt start and attempt end information but does not calculate the learner's quiz duration.

Role Switch

PRB0052532If the Announcements widget on a course homepage references an invalid image, instructors who use role switch and navigate away from the course homepage revert to their assigned role.

As a workaround, ensure links to invalid images are removed from announcement items on the course homepage.


PRB0053907Role Switch does not work when Brightspace APIs are called from Free Range Apps. The Brightspace API authenticates the user under their usual role instead of the role they are switched to.




Brightspace Developer Platform

PRB0043888When you search for an invalid UserID in Brightspace Learning Environment, the profile API route /d2l/api/lp/(version)/profile/user/(userId)returns a 200 - OK response.



1. On an instance of Brightspace Learning Environment, access Brightspace Developer Platform testing page.

2. Enter the profile API route /d2l/api/lp/(version)/profile/user/(userId).

3. Replace the version with the version of the API you are running.

4. Enter a UserID that does not exist in your instance of Brightspace Learning Environment.

5. Run the API.

6. Observe that a 200 - OK message is generated and not a 404 - Profile not found message that is expected.
