About the nameplateThe nameplate is located on the bottom of the“PlayStation”.

To prevent fire or shock hazard, do notexpose the unit to rain or moisture.

To avoid electrical shock, do not openthe cabinet. Refer servicing to qualifiedpersonnel only.

WARNINGTo prevent shock hazard, do not insert theplug cut off from the mains lead into asocket outlet. This plug cannot be used andshould be destroyed.

Read before operating your“PlayStation”A few people may experience epilepticseizures when viewing flashing lights orpatterns in our daily environment. Thesepersons may experience seizures whilewatching TV pictures or playing videogames. Even players who have never hadany seizures may nonetheless have anundetected epileptic condition.Consult your doctor before playing videogames if you have an epileptic condition orshould you experience any of the followingsymptoms during play: altered vision,muscle twitching, other involuntarymovements, loss of awareness of yoursurroundings, mental confusion, and/orconvulsions.

On safety• The laser beam emitted from the lens of your

“PlayStation” is harmful to the eyes. Do notdisassemble the casing. Servicing should becarried out by qualified personnel only.

• Should any solid objects or liquid fall into your“PlayStation”, unplug it immediately and haveit checked by qualified personnel before anyfurther use.

• When not in use, disconnect your“PlayStation” from the mains. Whendisconnecting, grasp the plug and pull it fromthe wall socket. Never pull the cord itself.

For your health• Be sure to take a break of about 15 minutes

during every hour of play.• Do not play a game when you are very tired or

short of sleep.• Play in a well lit room, sitting as far from the

screen as the cord will allow.

On operation• Operate your “PlayStation” only on 220 - 240 V

AC, 50/60 Hz.• Do not cover your “PlayStation” during use as

heat may build up internally.• Avoid rough handling or mechanical shock

and do not put any heavy objects on your“PlayStation”. This could damage the consoleor the disc.

• Do not leave your “PlayStation” near heatsources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight(operating temperature: 5˚C - 35˚C), excessivedust or sand, moisture, rain, on an unevensurface, or in a car with its windows closed.

• If your “PlayStation” causes interference toradio or television receptions, turn it off ormove it away from those appliances.

• Do not touch the lens inside the disc cover. Toprotect the lens from dust, keep the disc coverclosed except when inserting or removing adisc. If the lens is not clean, your “PlayStation”may not operate properly.

• Your “PlayStation” is not disconnected fromthe AC power source (mains) as long as it isconnected to the wall outlet, even if the unititself has been turned off.

About the discs• You can use the two kinds of discs with your

“PlayStation”: CD-ROM discs with both “PlayStation”logo and [PAL] designation, and audio CDs.

• Some discs sold in foreign countries cannot beused with this unit.

On handling discs• Do not leave the discs near heat sources or in

direct sunlight or excessive moisture.• Store the discs in their cases when they’re not in

use.• When handling the discs, do not touch the

surface.Hold them by the edge.

• Do not stick paper or tape on the discs.• Do not write on the discs with a marker, etc.

On moisture condensationIf your “PlayStation” is brought directly from a coldto a warm location, or is placed in a very damproom, moisture may condense on the lens inside.Should this occur, your “PlayStation” may notoperate properly. In this case, remove the disc forseveral hours until the moisture evaporates. If your“PlayStation” still does not operate properly, call theappropriate “PlayStation” customer service numberwhich can be found on the customer registrationcard, within every “PlayStation“ software manualand on our websites www.playstation-europe.comand www.playstation.com.au

Do not connect your “PlayStation” to aprojection TVDo not connect your “PlayStation” to a projectionTV unless it is the LCD type. Permanent damage toyour TV screen could otherwise result.

Never analyse or remodel your“PlayStation”Use your “PlayStation” following the instructionsin this manual. Press § (open) button.The disc cover opens.

Insert a disc with the label side up.

Close the disc cover.

Press 1/u (power) button.The 1/u indicator lights up.After the start-up screen, screen C 1 appears and the game begins.

Set the supplied Analog Controller (DUALSHOCK) to the appropriate mode for the software(see page 6).

Connecting to a TV with audio/video inputsConnect your “PlayStation” to the TV using the supplied AV Cable (integrated audio/video), making sure you match the colours on the plugs and terminals.If your TV is monaural, do not connect the red plugs. If you want to hear both left and rightsounds from a monaural TV, use a commercially available 3-phono to 2-phono (stereo tomonaural) type audio/video cable.

After connectingSet your TV to the appropriate video input mode. (Refer to the instruction manual of yourTV.)

For the customers in Australia and New ZealandA few models of television sets or monitors may display a bouncing or other incorrect screeneffect when connected to the “PlayStation”. A Restarting a game

Press RESET button.Be careful not to press RESET button whileplaying the game, or the game will end.

B Removing a disc

Press § button.While pressing the central spindle gently,pick up the disc holding the edge.

Tips• When you end a game, press § button, remove a

disc and press 1/u button to turn off the“PlayStation”.

• If you turn on your “PlayStation” without firstinserting a disc, screen C2 appears. It gives youaccess to the audio CD control screen and theMEMORY CARDS activity screen, described lateron in this manual. If you insert a CD-ROM disc ofthe “PlayStation” format while screen C2 is on,the game will start automatically.

• If the screen C3 appears, the inserted disc mightbe of a different format. Check if it has both the“PlayStation” logo and [PAL] designation on it. Adamaged or dirty disc would also produce thisscreen.See ”Troubleshooting“ on page 14.

Notes• There is no need to turn off the “PlayStation” if

you want to change games. Just open the disccover and wait until the disc stops spinning, swapthe discs over and then press RESET button.

• When inserting a disc, push the disc gently butfirmly until it sits snugly on the central spindle.

MWARNINGBefore removing a disc, press the § button and makesure that the disc completely stops.Never touch the disc while it is spinning. Otherwise,you may hurt yourself or damage the disc or your“PlayStation”.

A Mode switching and LEDdisplayThis Analog Controller (DUALSHOCK) canbe switched between two modes bypressing the ANALOG mode switch.Each time the ANALOG mode switch ispressed, the mode changes as follows.

Before using the controller, rotate the sticks oncewith your thumbs as if drawing a circle, as shownin the diagram at left. Do not twist the sticks.

C Analog mode (LED display: Red)Supports software with “ ” icon.

Vibration functionThis Analog Controller (DUALSHOCK) is atouch sensitive controller with a vibrationfunction. The vibration function can be setto ON or OFF on the monitor with thesoftware. The function of each button mayvary depending on the software played.Refer to individual software manuals forfurther details.

Notes• When the Analog Controller (DUALSHOCK) is

not used, turn the “PlayStation“ off or unplug thecontroller from the “PlayStation”.

• Before using the vibration function of thiscontroller, please read the following notes onsafety.

For safety• Stop using this unit immediately if you become

tired or if you experience unpleasantness orpain in your hands or arms while using. If thecondition persists, consult your doctor.

• Do not attempt to operate the controller withanything other than your hands. Do notoperate the controller with, or attach it to; yourhead, elbows, other bony parts of your body,face, or stomach.

• Absolutely do not use the vibration function ofthe Analog Controller (DUALSHOCK) if youhave any ailment in the bones or joints of yourhands or arms.

• Absolutely do not use the vibration function ofthe Analog Controller (DUALSHOCK) whenyour fingers, hands, wrists, or arms are broken,dislocated, or sprained; or if you have a pulledmuscle. These ailments may become worse dueto the vibration of the controller.

• Do not continue to use the Analog Controller(DUALSHOCK) for a long time. Take a rest atabout 30 minute intervals.

A MEMORY CARD screen

1 Contents of MEMORY CARD 1. The game data is displayed as icons.2 Icon. The number of icons corresponds to the number of used memory blocks.3 Arrow pointer.4 Copy the selected game data.5 Copy all the game data on the selected card.6 Delete the selected game data.7 Exit from this screen.8 Contents of MEMORY CARD 2.9 Displays of the game name and other details of the selected data.

You can save and load game data using theoptional SCPH-1020 MEMORY CARD.Each MEMORY CARD has 15 memoryblocks.

You can copy game data from oneMEMORY CARD to another or deleteunnecessary data, by bringing up theMEMORY CARD screen.

Set the supplied Analog Controller(DUALSHOCK) to digital mode (LEDdisplay: Off).

1 ...... Turn on your “PlayStation” beforeinserting a disc.

Copying game data1 ... Check that the card you’re copying to

has enough memory blocks, then select“COPY”.

2 ... Select the card containing the data tobe copied.

3 ... Select the icon for the data to becopied.

4 ... Select “YES”.Or select “NO” to cancel copying.

have enough empty blocks. Delete unnecessarydata.

Playing Audio CDs on your “PlayStation”will activate the SoundScope feature, agraphical representation of the music youare playing. Using the buttons on thecontroller, you can choose your favoritepicture from 24 patterns, change the colorof the picture or add the effect of anafterimage. You can also save and loadyour SoundScope settings using theMEMORY CARD.When enjoying SoundScope, set thesupplied Analog Controller(DUALSHOCK) to digital mode andoperate the CD directly with the controller(LED display: Off).

Starting SoundScope operationPress SELECT button when the CDoperation screen is displayed.

Saving the stored operation in theMEMORY CARDPress R2 button while holding down ✕button.A mark appears on the upper right of thescreen.

NoteYou can store only one custom setting of SoundScopeoperation. If the data already exists, it is erased.

Loading the data in the MEMORY CARDPress L2 button while holding down ✕button.A mark appears on the upper left of thescreen. To use the loaded data, follow theprocedure above.

Changing the size of the picturePress the directional buttons (up or down)while holding down ✕ button.

Changing and Storing the settings1 .... During playback, press R1 button

while holding down ✕ button.A mark flashes on the lower right ofthe screen.

2 .... Operate the controller.While the mark is lit, any changes youmake to the SoundScope operationwith the controller are stored.

3 .... When you are finished, press R1button while holding down ✕ button.The mark disappears and theprocedure is completed.

NoteDo not unplug the controller during the procedures.

Switching to stored settings1 ... During playback, press L1 button

while holding down ✕ button.A mark appears on the lower left of thescreen, and the SoundScope picture istransformed by the stored operation.

2 ... Press L1 button while holding down ✕button.The mark disappears and theprocedure is completed.

TipYour stored setting is lost when you turn off the“PlayStation”. If you want to keep the data, you cansave and load it by using the MEMORY CARD withone memory block.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (“SCEE”) will, for a period of 1 (one) year from the date of originalpurchase, repair or (at SCEE’s option) replace any component part of this Product, free of charge, where itis faulty due to defective materials or workmanship. Replacement will be with a new or refurbished unit,at SCEE’s option.

The benefits conferred by this Guarantee are in addition to other rights and remedies which the consumerhas in law in Australia in respect of this Product, including rights and remedies available under the TradePractices Act 1974 and State and Territory legislation.

IMPORTANT(1) If you need to claim under this Guarantee, please call the appropriate customer service number for

return instructions and other guidance.(2) This Guarantee is only valid:

(i) in Australia and New Zealand;(ii) when the original sales receipt or invoice (indicating the date of purchase and retailer’s name) is

presented together with the faulty Product (and has not been altered or defaced since the date oforiginal purchase).

(3) You may not claim under this Guarantee when the Product is damaged as a result of:(i) commercial use, accident, fair wear and tear or misuse (including, without limitation, failure to use

this Product for its normal purpose and/or in accordance with instructions on proper use andmaintenance, or installation or use in a manner inconsistent with applicable local technical orsafety standards);

(ii) use in conjunction with any unauthorised peripheral (including, without limitation, gameenhancement devices, adaptors and power supply devices);

(iii) any adaptation or adjustment to, or alteration of, this Product carried out for anyreason, and whether properly carried out or not; or

(iv) maintenance or repairs carried out other than by an authorised service facility.(4) Where permitted under applicable law, this Guarantee will be your sole and exclusive remedy for

breach of any guarantee, warranty, or condition, express or implied, in respect of this Product andneither SCEE nor any other Sony entity, or their suppliers or authorised service facilities, will be liablefor any incidental or consequential loss or damage.
