Located high above the communities ofRedlands, San Bernardino, Hesperia, Apple

Valley and Victorville, and nestled within theSan Bernardino National Forest just outside ofthe little town of Cedar Glen is the LAAC ForestLawn Scout Reservation.

The early history of the Forest Lawn ScoutReservation is a fascinating story. After WorldWar II thousands of young men returned fromthe war and settled in Southern California.Membership in the Los Angeles Area Councilbegan to grow, and it became increasingly clearthat the Boy Scouts needed additional acreagefor camping and hiking in an area that was locatednearby yet outside the urban expanse of LosAngeles.

In 1947 LAAC Camping Chairman BenjaminScheinman and Director of Camping JohnAckermann approached the Los Angeles Timesabout the possibility of purchasing acreage foryouth camping. Subsequently, LAAC ScoutExecutive Arthur Shuck (who was laterappointed Chief Scout Executive) and ScoutersNorman and Philip Chandler approached the LosAngeles Turf Club – given their extensive landholdings in the Lake Arrowhead region. Dr.Charles Strub, President of the Los Angeles TurfClub, became interested in working with theLAAC Boy Scouts in an effort to findopportunities for camping near Lake Arrowhead.

In 1948 LAAC Scout Executive Arnold Sorensonapproached John K. Northrop (NorthropCorporation) and asked him to serve as theChairman of the LAAC Camp DevelopmentCommittee. Jack Northrop was excited aboutthe prospects of acquiring acreage for the Scoutsof Los Angeles, and with the assistance of ScoutExecutive Sorenson and Camping DirectorWilliam Lindsay, they approached the LosAngeles Turf Club (and members of the Strubfamily) about the 160 acre parcel located adjacentto an abandoned shaft along Sheep Creek (thecurrent site of the Forest Lawn ScoutReservation).

In June of 1949, based on the close personalrelationship between Dr. Charles Strub and JackNorthrop, Mr. Robert Strub – acting on behalfof the Los Angeles Turf Club – presented theLos Angeles Area Council with the deed to the160 acre parcel along Sheep Creek as a gift fromthe Club.

During the latter months of 1949 and 1950,Jack Northrop worked tirelessly to solicitcontributions to build the Scout camp. Dr. SeeleyMudd (a former Scoutmaster) graciously donatedthe funds needed to build the water system, ranger cabin, road improvements and troopcampsite development. Cliff Garrett (GarrettAiresearch) generously contributed the fundsnecessary to build the Garrett Health Lodge.

On July 1, 1950, LAAC Council President JackNorthrop and LAAC Camping Chairman HoraceHahn proudly opened the doors to Camp BigHorn. On July 15, 1950, George A. Aunger –who has written a brief history about the originsof the Lake Arrowhead Boy Scout Camps –became the very first Resident Camp Directorat Big Horn. At that time there were no cabins,no dining halls, no swimming pools, no lake, noestablished program areas, and no camp staff.Camping at Big Horn in 1950 was simple withno frills.

In 1951 the Southern California EdisonCompany extended their power lines for the veryfirst time into Big Horn. During that same yearLAAC Council President Walter Rolapp, togetherwith Scout Executive Arnold Sorenson, JackNorthrop, Robert Strub and Camping ChairHorace Hahn approached D. Dade Davis (arepresentative of the Estate of R.W. Stevens) aboutpurchasing additional acreage in order to buildan access road to the camp. Eventually in 1951the LAAC purchased more than 1,000 acresfrom the Stevens Estate and, once again, theLos Angeles Turf Club came through andcontributed 60% of the purchase price. TheLAAC also acquired an additional 20 acres ofland from the U.S. Forest Service in exchange

for land the Council had owned near Yosemite. And thus, the Lake Arrowhead Boy Scout Campsbegan their formative years.

Today – 58 years after Camp Big Horn firstopened its doors – the leadership of the LAACBoard of Directors is hard at work once again.Following the devastating fires of the fall of2003, then Council President Bill Barrettchallenged the Board of Directors to “dreambig” and raise the funds necessary to rebuild ourcamp. Subsequently, our current CouncilPresident Robb Scoular, Scout Executive SteveBarnes and Council Camping Chair Gary W. Jones, have embarked on a course to rebuild the ForestLawn Scout Reservation. Our new facilities –which are slated for a Grand Re-Opening on July18, 2008 – include at Circle X Ranch at BigHorn: six brand new premier staff cabins, a newpool shower house and aquatics center, anoperational water slide, new trading post, extended dining hall facilities and an observatory. At Camp Pollock there is a brand new largetraining center, new Harvey PriceAdministration Center, Camp Director ’sresidence, and five spacious Scout lodges equippedwith full kitchen facilities. At Camp Pepperdinethere is a new dining pavilion and pool slide.

From the ashes of the fires of 2003 our LAACForest Lawn Scout Reservation has risen andis now one of the premier Boy Scout campingfacilities in the country. If you have not yet hadan opportunity to visit our breathtaking campnestled in the San Bernardino National Forestnear Lake Arrowhead please do so. Our ForestLawn Scout Reservation has been a summer(and winter) destination for thousands of Scoutsand Scouters for 58 years – and shall continue toserve Scouts and Scouters for decades into thefuture.

Community Service

Boy Scouts from the North Star Districtserved the community in their first ever

district-wide service project on June 28 and29. This year’s beneficiary was the MidnightMission’s downtown shelter. Boy Scouts fromeach of the communities collected canned foodand hygiene products to donate to the mission.

Their service to the Mission included sortingthe food for later distribution to people whoare in need, preparation of hygiene kits fordistribution on June 28 and 29 to the various

people who come to the mission, and servingmeals to as many as 500 to 600 people forlunch as well as for dinner. About 240 boyswere involved in these projects, workingbetween 4 to 5 hours each.

Though one of the many lessons that BoyScouts teaches is to help others including, butnot limited to, performing community service, and though this is ongoing throughout the yearby various troops in our communities, it is thehope and desire of this group of Scouts tocreate, nationwide, one special day each year, where all troops in all communities around theUnited States will come together, as was donethis year in Los Angeles.

The Boy Scout Motto, “Do a good turn daily”is certainly a motto they keep. These youngmen are on the right track, working to helpothers, better their community and to make adifference in the world. -Submitted byDorothy Conte

Jazz Orchestra

We have come a long way since the daysof our Country’s Framer

establishments. This BSA Jazz Orchestrareflects the wealth that our Tri-une God ofthis country has blessed us. It is through timethat many have participated in BSA training;and trickled down musical talents remainedreachable within this City. Their enthusiasmis a consequence of the benefit realized fromScout experiences.

It is my honor and blessing of God to lead sucha musical group. And in this case, they tell meit’s the first of this kind in the U.S.A. Then letit be a new direction for a Boy Scout image andachievements. May it be a motivating factorto drive members across this country to usemusic to out reach for more kids, new methodin preserving and illuminating God’s wayavailable for our future generations. MargaretThatcher one time said it’s to the effect.... “Therooster crows but the hens that laid the egg.”But I say to you, praise the Lord BSA hasregenerated many; but it’s also vitallyimportant, as BSA talented members, not tobe chicken about being witness of God, let alonebeing a Scout with our uniforms, andneckerchiefs displaying to our Communities. -Submitted by Wilson Ing

Camping

Summer is upon us once again. 2008 is racingby, and at midyear there are still many more

adventures and camping experiences to lookforward to. Events that have that providedsome camping experiences such as RocketAcademy and the Spring Camporee were wellappreciated. Cub Camps at Cabrillo YouthCenter and the full schedule of campopportunities at Forest Lawn ScoutReservation, Firestone Scout Reservation, LogCabin, are posted on the website http://www.boyscoutsla.org/. There is still time androom for units to register for these camps.Provisional units will be provided. Contactthe camping department at 213-413-4400 Ext.344.

Scouting is not only about earning merit badgesor working on advancement. An importantobjective in providing the experiences thatScouting does is to help develop the whole

person and his character. The “hands on”physical experience of actually being in thewilderness or on an adventure in the manyparks and recreation areas is invaluable. Thisis where a great percentage of learning takesplace, not only through interaction with nature, but with a peer group that share commoninterests as well. The real life experience ofmaking decisions and working with others fora common goal is inherent even more during acamping outing. Leadership is certainly acharacteristic that is nurtured during thecamping and adventure experience and is anatural path to building self confidence andmoral values.Camping experiences cannot be ignored andneed to be a regular and frequent part of theScouting unit’s program. In providing the verybest program for the unit, the camping programhas a paramount position with respect to therest of a unit’s program.

Adult leaders and parents are importantcatalysts to a successful Scouting and campingprogram. They provide the coaching andmodeling and are the examples for the youth tofollow. “Emulating the leader” is not just asaying. It is the natural consequence and partof the awesome responsibility that is entrustedto leaders. Be an active part of your unit andthe camping experiences. Volunteer to be partof the Pacifica District camping committee.Have a great summer! Friends of Scouting

For the past 100 years, the Boy Scoutprogram has made a difference in the lives

of millions and in many cases changed the faceof history. Many learned some of their earliestlessons as Boy Scouts. Through Scouting theylearned about trustworthiness, loyalty andcourtesy. They learned about kindness, friendship and bravery. Indeed, Scouting hashelped shape many generations of mentors, leaders and visionaries – and now it’s thisgeneration’s turn. Thanks for your support ofthe program through the Friends of Scoutingcampaign.

”I’ve never forgotten my days as an EagleScout. I didn’t know it at the time, but whatreally came out of my Scouting experience waslearning how to lead and serve the community. It has come in handy in my career ingovernment.” - Lloyd Bentsen, formerSecretary of the Treasury

It comes as quite a surprise to many donors that, after all these years of making gifts to the BSA, there is now a way for them to get back money from the BSA. A common type of a gift called a gift annuity makes this possible for you and other donors. The gift annuity is simply a contract between you and Boy Scouts of America. You make a gift of cash, stocks, bonds, or any number of other items of property. In return, the BSA agrees to pay you a guaranteed annual annuity for the rest of your life. If you are married, the annuity can also be paid to your spouse for life as well. The annuity amount depends on your age – the older you are, the larger the annuity you will receive each year. In addition to the annual income (part of which is often tax free, by the way), you also receive an income tax charitable deduction the year you make the gift annuity. Your gift to the council can be large or small, and the gift annuity is very simple to create. With interest rates so low, earnings on investments such as saving accounts, CD’s, stocks and/or bonds are at all time lows. If you are 55 or older and want to stabilize you cash flow with a better-than-average rate of return that is fixed for your lifetime, you may be interested in the Los Angeles Area Council, Boy Scouts of American Charitable Gift Annuity Plan. A Charitable Gift Annuity allows you to increase your financial security now, while providing a philanthropic legacy to the Los Angeles Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why sell popcorn? How does the BoyScout Popcorn fit the mission and

aims of the BSA?

Why sell popcorn?

Simple: you can make a LOT of moneyfor your unit. There are many other

reasons but that’s really the main one. The2007 popcorn sale was the most successfulin council history and our units earned$100,000 in commissions! With thespringboard from this last fall, the saleshould go through the roof and your unitshould be part of it!

How does the Boy Scout Popcorn fit themission and aims of the BSA?

When we conduct a Unit-MoneyEarning Project it is important that

we keep the values of Scouting in mind. One of the goals of Scouting is to teach aScout to become self-reliant and to earnhis own way. Through a proper money-earning project, leaders have theopportunity to show Scouts how they, through their individual and combinedefforts, can earn all the money it takes tooperate their pack, troop, team or crew forthe entire year. The only limiting factor istheir level of participation.

Many times, we hear of potential money-earning projects that rely heavily on theleaders or parents and very little on theScouts. Other times we hear of projectsthat rely on the good name of Scouting topromote a commercial project or service. Many times, “the most amount of moneyin the shortest amount of time” is a signalthat it MAY not be the best fit forScouting—if we’re going to view it asanother opportunity to instill values in theyoung people we serve.

Please review the chart below that showsthe types of lessons we teach when wechoose one type of money-earning projector another. Then, give careful though asyou consider what and how your unit willgenerate the necessary funds to operate.

Brandon’s Popcorn Story

Brandon Smith ($2,800 IN POPCORNSALES) from Pack 240 in Torrance

found a way help his pack and also helphis fathers company at the same time.

How did he do this you ask? (Sellingpopcorn) How could this be? Well here’show he did it:

His father works for a home health carecompany called HealthView Home Healthbased in Long Beach, CA. Each year his

company gives small thank you gifts to itscustomer as appreciation for theirbusiness. This year Brandon asked hisfather if his company would give CubScout popcorn as its gift instead of theusual stuff. He agreed and the results wereoutstanding. Not only did Brandon’s packand Scouting benefit from the sales, butHealth View’s customers were impressedwith the support that the company gaveto Scouting. And yes, they liked eating thepopcorn too.

When a Unit Chooses to: Here's what we teach the Scouts: Conduct a money-earning project that relies much more heavily on adult participation than to that of the Scouts.

Someone else will do the work for me.

Rely on generous financial support of individuals, service clubs, chartered partners, etc. just to "make the budget."

Let's look for a handout for what we want.

Assess a "program fee" on families or to collect the "weekly" dues in one lump sum at the beginning of the month or year.

I'll look to mom and dad--again--for money to do the things I want.

Offer to have parents donate extra money rather than deal with "another door-to-door sale."

I don't have to work for what I want, there's always another way.

We have failed to teach the Scouts the value of self-reliance: But, if the Unit chooses to: Then, we can teach a Scout: Conduct a product sale with goals and projected use of the funds clearly explained before the sale begins.

By my efforts and those of my fellow Scouts, my unit gets the money it needs for badges and other supplies for my program.

Support a product sale with a portion of the unit proceeds designated for an individual Scout's use to further his Scouting experience.

Not only does the unit benefit, but I can earn money for camp fees, Scouting supplies, etc. The harder I work, the more I earn.

Avoid the temptation to look for a "quick fix" or someone to sponsor, underwrite or otherwise financially support the unit.

If it is important enough for us to have it, it is worth our effort to earn the money to buy it.

We've taught the value of paying your own way.
