The Fulbright-Scotland Summer Institute is a unique educational partnership between the University of Dundee, University of Strathclyde and the US-UK Fulbright Commission with support from The Scottish Government and a host of civic Scotland partners. Ten students from universities across the United States are selected entirely on merit by competitive application and spend five weeks in Scotland during July and August for an intensive programme of lectures, seminars, cultural and study visits on the theme Scotland: Identity, Culture and Innovation. The Institute was launched in 2013. The Fulbright Program is the flagship educational and cultural exchange programme of the US Department of State designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those in more than 160 countries.

Welcome to Scotland

We are proud to host you at the University of Dundee in the first UNESCO City of Design in the UK – a prestigious designation awarded to the city last year in recognition of our contribution to design and innovation. Our mission at the University is to ‘Transform Lives’, and you will learn about our influence and global impact spanning medicine, the sciences, arts and the humanities as one of Europe’s most innovative universities. I know that your decision to come to Dundee and Scotland will be rewarded with a rich and exciting scholarly and cultural journey. I look forward very much indeed to meeting you.

Professor Sir Pete DownesPrincipal and Vice-ChancellorUniversity of Dundee

Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at the University of Strathclyde. Our origins lie in The Scottish Enlightenment, when we were founded as a place of ‘useful learning’, and we have evolved to become an established, leading international technological university. Our world-class research seeks innovative, practical solutions to urgent global challenges in areas such as health, energy, manufacturing and the development of prosperous, sustainable cities of the future. Our own city’s brand is “People Make Glasgow” and the same is true of our University. The entire Strathclyde community looks forward to extending a warm welcome to you during your stay.

Professor Sir Jim McDonaldPrincipal and Vice-ChancellorUniversity of Strathclyde

The Fulbright-Scotland Summer Institute will, I am confident, give you very special insights into Scotland – its universities, its culture, its diversity and its strong sense of identity. I know that you will benefit from the people you meet, the experiences you have and the knowledge you gain. Above all, I hope you develop a love of the place and wish to return soon and often.

Dame Seona Reid, CommissionerUS-UK Fulbright Commission
