Additional Levels of Allelu!Ages 4–5Because socialization is of critical importance in the year prior to Kindergarten, the lessons in the four- and five-year-old level of Allelu! focus especially on the relational aspects of our faith. Children learn about how they relate to God, who is himself a communion of persons. We explore the concept of family, first as the community within our home, and then in the larger context of the parish family. The relationship between God and his people is also discussed through the stories of Jesus’ early life and ministry. Attention is also given to how children are called to relate to others, including their peers and the community at large.

KindergartenThe Kindergarten level begins with the Holy Trinity. It explores Catholic identity through the lens of participation in the community of faith. Baptism is discussed as a welcome into the Christiancommunity. The Mass is presented as our Church family’s celebration of praise to God, and theseasons of the Church year are discussed. The life and teaching of Jesus Christ are celebratedthrough stories about his birth and early childhood, his teaching ministry, and his passion andResurrection, all in age-appropriate ways. Jesus’ continued presence with us is emphasized, withparticular focus on his presence in the Eucharist. There is also considerable focus at this level onkindness, forgiveness, and the beginnings of conscience formation.

The Six Tasks of Catechesis will serve as the major themes for all three years. However, these themes will be gradually unfolded over the course of the program.

Creating a Faith EnvironmentThe day-to-day sharing and negotiating that happens in a room contributes to the child’s understanding and participation in community.

Dr. Joseph D. White

Our relationship with Christ depends in part on an individual response to a personal invitation from God. In keeping with this idea, and in order to allow each child an opportunity to respond to God in his or her unique way, Allelu! makes use of imagination, creativity, and autonomy in activities, while still providing a solid foundation in authentic Catholic teaching.

Room Environmentq Posters and Pictures Place child-friendly posters in the room such as Jesus and the children, the Holy Family, Mary Mother of God, saints, and various other pictures from the life of Jesus. Photos from Catholic calendars and pictures cut from books purchased at a used bookstore are an economical resource for decorating the room. Include photos of children from other cultures. Mission organizations are a good resource for multicultural posters.

q Sacramentals Create a setting by using sacramentals and religious statues through the room. This will lend itself to creating a space that is Catholic and that is set apart from the secular world.

q Artwork Make a place in the room to showcase the children’s artwork. They will feel a sense of belonging when their treasured drawings are hung in the room. q Natural Resources Organic materials such as plants and wicker baskets for storage will create a warm environment. Check with the local nursery to see which types of plants are safe for children. Teach the children
