Our ever popular class series, such as
Agility, Treibball, Basic Obedience, Tricks
and Reactive Rovers are taught by expert
technicians to help strengthen the bond
between pet owners and their four-legged
friends. Our newest additions, Wallflowers,
a basic obedience class for shy or fearful
dogs, Private Training and Nose Work offer
more options to canine companions of all
temperaments.
Classes are expanding off site, too! At
the end of January, select classes will be
taught at the Glendale Civic Auditorium.
Look for classes to return to the Arbore-
tum in Arcadia in the spring.

I enjoy the beginning of the New Year.
That’s the time I reflect on the changes,
growth and missteps of the previous year
and look forward to the challenges and
plans for the future.
The opening of the Animal Care Center in
2014 was the fulfillment of a vision for a
more humane community for animals.
The public spay/neuter center, expanded
behavior and training center and Shelter
Shop have helped hundreds of animals, kept
pets in their homes and provided vaccina-
tions and spay/neuter surgeries.
In 2015, the Pasadena Humane Society will open the Neely Cat Center, the “cat
zone” within PHS. Some of the programs it will provide include a nursery for nurs-
ing kittens, a feral cat room, enrichment equipment and two community rooms.
The Neely Cat Center will incorporate the best ideas and technology for cats and
will directly result in saving lives.
We are working to continue our mission to provide care and compassion for all
animals and reach our goal of zero euthanasia of adoptable and placeable animals.
January and February are also the months to prepare for spring. Check your home
to make sure that wildlife cannot enter it (check crawl spaces, screening, chimneys
etc). Visit www.pasadenahumane.org/wildlife for tips.
If more exercise is one of your New Year’s resolutions, include your dog—it’s good
for both of you! If you walk on the trails, make sure you follow leash laws, have
enough water and dress comfortably. Our shop has a wide choice of leashes and
collars for you to choose from, as well as hiking kits that your dog can wear.
Cats need exercise too, so develop a routine that involves your cat. The Shelter
Shop carries plenty of toys to fascinate and exercise your cat.
Whatever your plans are for this New Year, if you care about animals PHS has
something for you. Check out the website to see what’s going on or just drop
by and visit.
Our staff and animals wish you a healthy and happy New Year.

Beverly Marksbury
Beverly Marksbury’s love of cats has
made a world of difference for the
animals of the Pasadena Humane
Society & SPCA for over 20 years.
Beverly made the decision to support
our shelter after she adopted her first
cat, Wolfgang.
One day when Wolfgang was 16,
he got out and Beverly returned
to PHS to get a trap to catch him
before night fell. Unfortunately, PHS
had loaned out every trap so a Field
Services Officer offered to go to
her house and help catch Wolfgang.
Within five minutes of arriving at her
home, Wolfgang was safe in her arms
and a grateful Beverly was so thankful
she immediately sent in a donation as
a thank you for the officer’s help and
quick response.
Following Wolfgang’s safe return, she
became a monthly donor after read-
ing about the Constant Companion
program in Scoop. Being a Constant
Companion offers Beverly several
benefits. “I can easily donate with an
automatic monthly charge and keep
a good record of my donations for
tax purposes while most importantly,
helping the animals,” she said.
Besides an extensive 38-year-career
with the court system, Beverly is a
member of local community organi-
zations including the Tournament of
Roses Association, San Marino League
and Pasadena Showcase for the Arts;
although we think her soft spot for the
animals makes her even more special.
“I admire how PHS enriches the com-
munity by taking care of animals that
end up on the streets for a variety of
reasons and they do so with compas-
sion and care,” Beverly said about her
decision to support PHS. “The new
Animal Care Center has allowed for the
expansion of the services previously
provided to our community along with
the expanded 70 car parking garage
to make the shelter more accessible
to the public, along with a fabulous
shelter shop.”
Beverly Marksbury is our Community
Hero because she is a constant com-
panion to the animals, a dedicated
supporter and a current director of the
Pasadena Humane Society Board.

PHS SUMMER PROGRAM Ages 12-15; Tuesday, July 7 to Saturday, July 11
This program is an amazing opportunity for young people to experience all
aspects of running an excellent animal shelter like PHS. The curriculum is
designed to make each day a focus on a particular aspect of our facility,
programs and services including dog handling, animal rescue, working with
the media, and much more.
AMBASSADOR PROGRAM This new program will extend our education and
outreach capabilities as volunteer ambassadors present to schools and com-
munity groups, as well as giving tours and presentations on site. We want
to make sure that the communities we serve are aware of all of our programs
and services.
Visit www.pasadenahumane.org for more information or to register for upcoming events.

HAPPY TAILS
Don’t Judge a Book By Its CoverGracie, a two-year-old cropped ear
pit bull, came to PHS in July last year
searching for a home. Little did she
know, she would become an all-time
favorite among staff and volunteers.
This calm, mild-mannered, even stoic,
pittie became an outstanding breed
ambassador. After a few sessions at
Shelter School, our enrichment pro-
gram for shelter dogs, Gracie dem-
onstrated her “sit,” “down” and “stay”
commands earning her a Blue Ribbon
for her good manners, as well as a
reduced adoption fee.
“She was the best dog ever,” said
Milena Warns, Special Events Co-
ordinator at PHS. “She would make
office visits and showed how playful
she was. She was intimidating when
people first saw her, but when they
interacted with her they saw how
sweet and loving she was.”
During her stay at PHS, Gracie at-
tended community events on the
Mobile Outreach Unit. She was very
playful with the other shelter dogs
and charmed everyone she met.
Then one day in November, Gracie
found her new home! After she left
the shelter, cheers rang through-
out the shelter over the PA system
chanting “Gracie has been adopted!”
PHS gives respect, a safe haven and
care to every animal that comes
through its open doors. Stigmas
and stereotypes surrounding pit
bulls do make it harder for them
to find homes, but Gracie’s story
shows to never judge a book by
its cover and to never give up. She
now enjoys playing in a large back-
yard and going for walks along a
trail near her home.

fundraiser to benefit the Pasadena Hu-
mane Society & SPCA. In 2014, commu-
nity fundraisers raised over $180,000 for
animals in need. These fundraisers vary
in type and size, but include lemonade
stands, car washes, gift wrapping, and
more. If you are interested in organiz-

EVENT ROUND UP
Starting the On the Right Paw (continued from page 1)
Cats are a part of our expansion as
well. The department partners with Un-
leashed by Petco in Monrovia for a new
program called, Cat Off Site Enrichment
(C.O.S.E). Selected felines, cared for by
PHS volunteers, remain at Unleashed by
Petco until they are adopted. Our ongo-
ing Cat Nail Trimming Clinic lets us help
you maintain your cat’s health.
The department also facilitates Shelter
School, a weekly program for shelter
dogs to go on field trips in Pasadena
or use the training center to reinforce
basic obedience commands. If a dog
performs all of the commands, then
he/she receives a Blue Ribbon and a
reduced adoption fee. Talk about the
whole package!
