AFL NSW/ACT would like to thank all teachers for their contribution in 2015 and we look forward to seeing you again in 2016. As your start to plan for 2016, AFL NSW/ACT asks you to please read over the school prospectus, as we have a number of great programs and competitions that your school can enter.

AFL NSW/ACT is committed more then ever to supporting the education system by providing programs designed to meet health and physical education outcomes for both males and females.

The school prospectus provides an overview of not only AFL NSW/ACT programs and competitions but also nation-wide AFL educational programs and resources on offer. AFL has created programs and competitions that enable teachers and students to be actively involved in AFL all year round.

Learn AFL Auskick

A development program targeted at students with limited to no knowledge of AFL. The curriculum linked program to specific educational outcomes achieved through practicing the core skills of the game and learning about the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants. 4 weeks $20

per participant, additionalweeks at $2 per participant.Experience AFL

Auskick A development program targeted at students with some understanding of AFL. The curriculum linked program expands on this knowledge via specific skill sessions and modified match play whilst learning about the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants.

Sporting Schools Program

AFL Sporting Schools Program has been developed to facilitate the delivery of AFL in schools. The program provides schools the opportunity to access Australian Sports Commission funding to assist with the delivery of the program.

After SchoolAuskick Centre

After school clinics based on participant abilities, run on school grounds, after school by qualified AFL staff. 4-6 sessions. $40-50 per person

PRIMARY COMPETITIONSAFL NSW/ACT OFFERS STUDENTS A VARIETY OF COMPETITIONS TO EXPERIENCE MATCH PLAY OPPORTUNITIES

The Paul Kelly Cup is the largest AFL primary school competition in New South Wales and the ACT and is open to students in Years 5 and 6. ACT contest the James Hird Cup with the winner contesting the PKC Final.

The Paul Kelly Cup consists of 12 player teams competing in round robin carnivals in your local area. Games are played on a smaller field using modified 12-a-side rules. This allows children who are new to the game to experience and enjoy AFL in a safe and fun environment. Team(s) will play a minimum of three games at AFL Paul Kelly Cup Gala Day.

Local Paul Kelly Cup days are held in Term 1 and early Term 2. Winning teams progress to a regional final, normally completed in Term 2. The state final takes place during with sides from all over NSW and the ACT at one of NSW premier facilities.

Marking contest at the Paul Kelly Cup State Final, SCG, 17th August 2015

A competition utilising modified rules and fields, run in conjunction with PSSA sports. AFL allows the opportunity to experience match play against other schools within the PSSA Zone. Open to all public schools to participate in with existing PSSA Zone Competitions, the competition can run year round.

AFL NSW/ACT is able to assist in establishing PSSA Zone competitions in new areas.

A knock out competition run by NSW PSSA, open to all public schools.

Opening rounds are played as Gala Days held around the state with the winner of each Gala Day progressing to the Round 4 which will then revert to a KO Competition.

An opportunity for students to participate in a match play competition against local schools within their network. Utilising modified rules and fields, Inter-School competitions is open to any schools to establish a competition. AFL NSW/ACT is able to support Inter-School competitions by providing resources and staff to assist with the establishment of the competition. Inter-School competitions can run year round.

Introduce AFL Aims to teach the basic skills of the game in a safe and fun environment. The timing of the program can be modified to meet a range of options for the school.

Experience AFL Developed to be used in upper high school classes to provide students with an opportunity to learn key AFL related skills. The program aims to:

• Educate students on the rules of Australian Football• Teach students the skills of Australian Football• Provide students with the skills to coach Australian Football• Provide students with the skills to umpire Australian Football

4 weeks $20-36 per participant, additional weeks at $2 per participant.

Coaching Courses Accredited AFL Level 0 and 1 course are available and have been linked to specific PE curriculum outcomes 9-12 $20-50 per person

2015 15s Boys Swans Cup contested Knox Grammar (blue) and Edmund Rice College (red) at Blacktown International Sports Park

The Swans Cup and Giants Cup are exciting competitions designed for secondary schools located within both the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants talent zone. Both competitions consist of boys and girls divisions, competition ages are Under-15s and Opens.

All competitions commence term 2. Opens competitions will conclude with a State Final at the end of term 2. The 15s competitions concluding during term 3.

Register

A knock out competition run by NSW CHS, open to all public schools. The competition is for Boys 15s and under, commencing in term 2 and concluding at the end of term 3 with a State Final.

Register

TEACHER OPPORTUNITIES Aims to resource, recognise, motivate and reward teachers who strongly promote the game of Australian football in their school and their community.

The main expectations of a Woolworths AFL School Ambassador include:• Provide a point of contact for the distribution of

information to teachers, parents and school children

• Assist in the distribution of resources to teachers and sports PE coordinators ensuring schools have the required equipment to complete an AFL program

• Implement AFL education packages in schools and professionally develop staff where necessary

• Assist the AFL in the promotion of AFL competitions within the school and in local community groups

• Ensure the school is participating in all football programs available

• Liaise with other Ambassadors if possible to develop a competition based program within their school sporting region

• Promotion of football programs in media/school newsletter

• To be a positive role model

• Liaise where possible with local Auskick centre’s and Junior Football clubs to promote student participation.

• Liaise with local Junior Club and or local Auskick coordinator to assist with the promotion of Australian Football within the local community.

Small sided hand ball games not only test one of the fundamental AFL skills but also develop spacial awareness, team work and communication skills of students.

Activities are curriculum linked to specific KLA and to each Key Stage.

GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

Each year, football friendly schools can apply to AFL NSW/ACT for financial assistance to purchase equipment such as permanent Australian Football goal posts, football jumpers and footballs. These grants are managed by the Schools & Universities Program Manager in consultation with AFL NSW/ACT Regional Managers and the respective schools.

The criteria to be eligible for these grants require schools as a minimum is to have an AFL School Ambassador and participate in a school program or competitions of at least four weeks in duration or has made a committed to be involved in the near future.
