The School The British International School
Bratislava (BISB) is accredited by the
Ministry of Education of Slovak Republic
and it is included into the network of
schools and educational facilities of the
Slovak Republic.
BISB is a comprehensive school enrolling
over 640 students, representing more
than 50 different nationalities, from
Nursery through to Year Thirteen
(equivalent of US Grade 12). The school
opened in September 1997 and graduated
its first senior class in 2007. BISB is a
part of Nord Anglia Education LTD.
The school spans 2 separate buildings,
one for the Nursery – Reception students,
and the second for the Year 1 – 13
students. It is one of only two
international schools in Bratislava which
offer secondary education up to pre-
university age.
Average class sizes are:
• Primary: 18 Students per class
• Secondary: 15 students per class

• There are currently 293 students in the
Secondary School (Year 7 -13). Included
in this are 33 students in the
Graduation Class of 2014.
Curriculum
• Our curriculum is split into three separate
units:
• Years 7 – 9 are based on the English
National Curriculum;
• Years 10 and 11 lead to the International
General Certificate of Secondary
Education (IGCSE) administered by
Cambridge University, England;
• Years 12 and 13 follow the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
(IBDP).
• Extra-curricular activities include sports
and sports fixtures/tournaments, eco-
schools, musical groups, drama
productions, international Maths
competitions, charity and fund-raising,
cultural events, Model United Nations
events, International Award Programme
(Duke of Edinburgh), Debating Club,
residential trips, educational visits and the
Student Council

Graduation Requirements for IBDP The maximum total score for the Diploma
programme is 45 points. The IB Diploma
will be awarded to candidates whose total
score reaches or exceeds 24 points,
provided:
• grades have been awarded in the six
subjects of the Diploma Programme;
• an approved programme of CAS has been
completed
• grades A – E have been awarded for both
TOK and an Extended Essay, with a
minimum grade D in at least one of them
• there is no grade 1 in any subject
• there is no more than one grade 2 at
Standard Level
• there is no grade 2 at Higher Level
• overall, there are no more than three
grades 3 or below
• at least 12 points are gained on Higher
Level subjects
• at least 9 points have been gained on
Standard Level subjects
• the candidate is judged not to be guilty of
malpractice
The bilingual Diploma is awarded to a
candidate who:
• either, has taken two Languages A1;
• or, has taken an examination in at least
one of the subjects from Group 3 or Group
4 in a language other than their Language
A1.

IB Diploma Programme Grading System The IB Diploma students are monitored and graded throughout
the two years of the Diploma Programme using the IB grading
system for each subject which gives the students a grade
between 1 - 7.
IGCSE Grading System The grading system used is that of the Cambridge University
Examinations Board (www.cie.org.uk). There are no simple
correlations between percentages scored and grades awarded
as there are variations between subjects and year-on-year
fluctuations.
