Hello everyone Last Wednesday, Mrs. Fleming and I had the pleasure of accompanying our 22 student leaders to the GRIP Student Leadership Conference at the Melbourne Convention Centre. The day’s program was perfectly geared toward developing our students’ leader- ship skills while increasing their understanding of what it means to be a leader. GRIP Leadership’s core values fall under the head- ings of Generosity (time and resources), Responsibility, Integrity and People and, as such, are closely aligned to the values at BPPS. Our leaders gained significantly from their involvement and represented the school admirably. Many of our leaders made presentations in front of over 700 people at Monday’s Assembly – a regular responsibility for this group. We are grateful to School Captains Chloe and Henry, and Student Well Being Captains Maryam and Philip for reporting on their involvement in the above-mentioned conference. Visual Arts Captains Sucheta and Stephanie presented the Artists of the Week (congratulations Georgiann Pattas and Felix Harding) and announced the winners of the colouring competition they organised and conducted at the Welcome Back BBQ. Sports Captains Olivia and Keegan summarised the results of our Inter-school sports teams, while House Captains Jamee and Josh reported on our Intra-school sport. Performing Arts Captains Emily and Caelin reminded those students interested in being part of our ensembles to return their forms and School Vice Captains Scarlett and Thomas an- nounced that Killara, Burra and Cooma had been the successful Houses in recent weeks’ competitions. Care, Learn and Share Awards were presented to the following children: Bella Mantelos for ably filling in for the Visual Arts Cap- tains while they were at the conference; Millie McMenamin, Christina Antoniadis, Nina Angelkovic, Zoe Owen and Ruby Slifkas for assisting Mrs Trollope with an administrative task; and brothers Thomas and Oliver Woodman for assisting an injured child after school. Congratulations and thank you all. Parents Steve Taylor and Jane Fellingham informed the assembly about oppor- tunities to participate in Australian Rules football via Auskick or the Greythorn Falcons Junior Football Club before presenting the school with footballs, for which we are most grateful. Nominations for School Council Membership closed yesterday afternoon. We are fortunate to have so many parents interested in being involved and willing to assist. We have received more nominations (seven) than we have vacant positions (five) so the process will now go to a ballot. Next Wednesday all families will receive voting papers that will need to be completed and returned by 4.00 p.m. on Wednesday 9 th March. The candidates are Anna Alexander, John Anderson, Dorothy Frost, Joanne Huynh, Marylou Sar- torel, Annette Subhani and Jasmine Featherston. Each will be asked to prepare a brief bio to assist you with your decision-making. We thank them all for putting themselves forward. As part of the whole school theme of Community, our Grade 5/6 children’s topic is “Government – Get it? Got it? Good!” Part of this unit has involved students learning about the three levels of government in Australia - Local, State and Federal - and how our system of government works. To assist their understanding, they have been involved in Parliamentary Role Plays run by staff from the Victorian Parliament. Using props and equipment including banners, nameplates and a replica Mace, the classrooms have been set up to replicate the Legislative Assembly chamber at Parliament House. The children have acted in the roles of Speaker, Clerk, Sergeant-at-Arms, Premier, Leader of the Opposition and front-benchers. Students learnt how the Parliament of Victoria makes laws, provides representative democracy for Victorians and has a rich and colourful history. We can report that our parliamentari- ans behaved themselves very well! Our Grade 3/4's Community focus has included deepening their understanding of the rich and ancient traditions of Aus- tralia’s first people. Last Friday they participated in an all day Cultural Infusion program which included a range of activities related to aspects of Australian indigenous culture. Our thanks are extended to the teachers who organized these enriching and engaging activities. Included in this week’s Press is an appeal for Class Representatives. Nicky O’Keefe, on behalf of the Parents and Friends Association, mentions that 10 of our 27 grades do not have a Class Rep as yet. Ideally two or three parents share the role of represent-ing each grade to help liaise and arrange class-specific activities. Please give consideration to volunteering for this important school community function.

We remind all families that our school grounds are unsupervised before 8.45 a.m. and after 3.45 p.m. Children should not be at school outside of these hours unless required for a school-sanctioned activity (eg musical group, sports practice). Before and after-school care is available through OSH Club.

We want to inform you that the Victorian Chief Health Officer has confirmed cases of measles in Brunswick and East Brunswick. If you would like any further information about measles please refer to the Better Health Channel measles fact sheet. There are also Fre-quently Asked Questions specifically about the measles outbreak in Brunswick for your information.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Friends, I have a couple of new additions to our school to introduce to you this week. Outside the office is a parent library. We have set up a collection of books on a variety of topical parenting issues. A personal favourite, when I had young children, were the Steve Biddulph books about the Secrets of Happy Children. Steve Biddulph talks about ‘soft love’ and ‘firm love’ and that both these kinds of love have to be activated in sufficient quantities for children to thrive. There are many other great titles in this collection featuring well-known authors such as: Michael Carr-Greg, Maurice Balson and Michael Grose. If you wish to borrow, there is a note book to record your name and the title of the book. Please indicate when you have returned the books. Enjoy.

Secondly, I would like to introduce Bethany Stephen, a new staff member to BBPS this year. Bethany teaches Music to Year 3 classes and leads our Orchestra, Girls Vocal Group and Senior Choir. Welcome Bethany.

My Interests, background and experience: I have loved singing from as early as I can remember. So much so that I convinced my older sister to start a band with me about 13 years ago when I was a daggy young teen and since then we’ve been writing songs and performing them all around Australia and overseas in various capacities. We’ve performed at festivals, confer-ences, house concerts and music venues, and have recorded albums in Los Angeles, at home in the spare bedroom, in cubby houses and state of the art recording studios. Most recently, my sister and I launched our latest musical project called the Teeny Tiny Stevies (see above) with a children’s album titled ‘Useful Songs For Little People’. The album is full of important messages children are often encouraged to retain, included in such hits as ‘I Only Go To The Toilet On The Toilet’, ‘I Ate A Rainbow’, ‘Baby In Mums Tummy’, ‘Magic Words’ and ‘You’ll Have To Be Patient’, just to name a few. My favourite food, place, book or movie: My favourites include pasta (or any other carbohydrate), romantic comedies and anywhere that is the beach. What would my mum say about me …. That I am the chosen one :) What have I liked about BPPS so far…. The entire staff and student community have been fabulously helpful, friendly and welcoming. I am very much looking forward to a great year at BPPS and am particularly excited about working with the Girls Vocal Group, Senior Choir and Orchestra. Cheers, Jane Woodman

ARTIS OF THE WEEK The ‘Artist of the Week’ for next week is Emma Huang from 6SR. Em-ma began her personal ‘Community Artwork’ by nailing a wire coat hanger to a block of wood before pulling and bending it into an ab-stract, 3D shape. Her next task was to drag sheer panty hose over the shape and tape the nylon to the wooden base. The whole shape was then painted with a combination of PVA and white chromacryl paint. This mixture, when dry, provided a firm, white base for future design work over the coming weeks. Congratulations Emma, on your crea-tive, well crafted sculpture. Chris Trollope & Jennifer Hortin
