Er 23 years, the Conway School of Landscape Design has

produced graduates with a commitment to land stewardship andenvironmentally sound design. Conway’s intensive 10-monthMaster of Arts program applies classroom learning to contractedprojects at residential and community scales. The curriculumincorporates technical, graphic, and communication skills withecological theory. Design and planning approaches are revealed inthe process of problem-solving. This hands-on approach helpsstudents acquire necessary professional skills as well as a capacity

for life-long learning. In theprocess, they develop andpresent designs and plans, under contract and at cost, forprivate residences, non-profitorganizations and institutions, towns and cities, and regionalplanning agencies. Classes aresmall, the pace is accelerated, and the rural setting is unique.

The Conway School attracts individuals who are highly motivated,self-directed learners with a commitment to environmentalsensitivity. Many are changing careers or building on previousexperience. Entering students must have a bachelor’s degree(with liberal arts courses); classes typically include a widerange of ages, work experience, and academic:backgrounds. Deadline for applications fromprospective students is March 15th.

Conway brings in guest teachers throughoutthe year to supplement core instruction. Faculty and practitionersin environmental and design fields who are interested in spendinga week at Conway teaching classes, leading field trips, andevaluating student work are invited to send a letter of interestby January 15,1997.

"This is a major work ....Once picked up, ~he book c~no~ bepu~ down, for k is an excidng exegesis of the continuing kMian

With a wealth of literary and visual

materials previously untapped, Hunt

provides a new history of an intriguing

and vital phase of English garden history.

Not only does he suggest the centrality

of the garden as a focus for many social,

aesthetic, political, and philosophical

ideas but he argues that the so-called ~

English landscape garden before "Capability" Brown owed much

to a long and continuing emulation of Italian Renaissance models.

S qAD Their Origins and HistoqH~-L~’~ L~Tying together human migration with the spread of the cultiva-

tion of trees, the author has written a fascinating and informative

book that tells the story of tree cultivation from ancient to modern

times. The dispersion and variation of the more important trees is,

in a sense, the story of the rise of civilization, for civilized societies

have almost always cultivated trees for

ornamentation and shade.

Some of the subjects covered include

conifers, flowering trees, shade trees, and

the continents of Europe, Asia, and

North America as centers of origin for

trees. In addition, the volumeprovides a scientific and common-

name index.
