School Newsletter Friday, 29th June, 2018 Issue : 33, Vol 5 Learning, Growing, Achieving…Our journey together Dear parents, Two events are taking place next week which I wanted to highlight : on Tuesday, 3 rd July, we’ll be hosting our second Coffee Morning with the Senior Leadership Team from 9:00-9:30am in the staffroom. Miss Woodhouse, Mrs Bryant and Mrs Jones will be pleased to meet with parents to discuss any issues, concerns or questions which are of a ‘whole school’ nature. After drop-off, just pop in for a chat and say hello as we don’t often have that chance in the busy day-to-day running of the school. Later that same day, at 2:30pm is your chance to be a ‘fly on the wall’ and observe a Year 2 maths lesson. As we move towards a deeper approach to maths, mastering a concept rather than skimming over the essentials, this session will demonstrate lesson style. In the autumn, we’ll be hosting something similar with Year 6 pupils. No matter how old your child is, this session will reveal a way into teaching maths that is exciting for all of us. Congratulations are in order to Ms Roche who has not only completed her Schools Direct teacher training but was awarded the very highest mark of Outstanding. This is based upon dozens of lesson observations, her planning and reflection and her general management of a busy classroom. We are hugely proud of her and delighted that she will be a newly qualified teacher on staff from September. If you’ve wondered about teacher training and would like to have a chat about our programme, pop in to chat with Ms Roche or me. We are hosting our Volunteer Tea on Thursday from 2:15pm. Invitations have gone out but if we’ve missed someone you know (or even you!), please let me or someone in the office know. We have a growing and lively team of volunteers and we want to include everyone. If you are interested in volunteering next year – or know someone who would like to – please get in touch. Just 20 minutes of reading one-to-one with a child can change someone’s life. Mrs Katherine Phillips is heading up our reading programme next year and would be delighted to arrange readers. Grandparents warmly welcomed as are community members. Moira Atkinson at the Nettlestead Preschool has emailed to warn us of a Giant Hogweed plant that is growing by the side of the road near the hall entrance. The plant’s sap can cause harsh burns so please be aware of it. The council has been notified to remove it. See pictures below. I look forward to seeing many of you at our Summer Party on Saturday! In worship this week, we remembered murdered MP Jo Cox and her message that there is more that unites than divides us. That is a message that resonates strongly for all of us here at school, children and staff. We also replayed Abraham’s journey and blindfolded Connor as he had to trust us to guide him across an obstacle course. He was very brave and determined and received a well-deserved round of applause.

CHURCH, SCHOOL & WORSHIP Our Christian value for this term is

FORGIVENESS

Last Friday, 10 girls attended the TMBC District Girls' Kwik Cricket at Kings Hill Cricket Club. The tournament was attended by 6 schools. In the morning they played two games in the initial group stage and, having won both these games, qualified for the afternoon finals. They won their semi-final and came up against West Malling School. In an exciting final, the girls came out victorious to become the 2018 district champions! It was a great day and winning was the icing on the cake. We are especially proud of the girls and in the spirit of sportsmanship each girl, in rotation, played an additional game for another school who were unable to bring a full team. Well done. girls!

Tag Rugby - Sad Goodbye

After over 10 years of running the school tag rugby club, Mark Cornford, has 'retired' from coaching the club. It wasn't a decision he took lightly for as those that know him will attest, rugby runs through his veins! During Mr Cornford's time the school achieved regular success at district and county level: Kent champions in 2015. But with new demands in his daily job along with increased youth rugby coaching for both Kent and Aylesford, something had to give way. It is a huge and sad loss and I am sure there are many past and present parents who would like to thank him for his time, commitment and passion. Vacancy! Tag rugby Coach! If there are any parents interested in running the tag rugby club or helping out, please let Mr Evans know.

Yellow Class visit the coast!

On Friday the 22nd of June, Yellow Class went on a trip to St. Mildred’s Bay. We went rock pooling, sketching and we looked at the cliffs and we had a sandcastle competition. The children who won had made a mermaid and used shells to colour it. To finish it off we had an ice cream yum yum! Flora Szewczuk and Evangeline Glasscote, Yellow Class.

Book fair details:

Monday to Thursday next week at lunchtime in the library and after school until 4pm. Please send in cash in a named envelope for children to buy at lunchtime. Cheque payable to school or cash.

WARNING : SUN!

We have been experiencing some very hot weather so please put sun screen on your children. We can reapply it during the day; just bring it in and name the bottle. Also don’t forget sun hats!

We learned about MP Jo Cox and enjoyed eating our lunch with different classes. The children enjoyed sharing lunchtime with their reading partners. Spending time with other year groups helps us feel like one big family.

Our gardeners planted runner beans and had a lot of watering to do! The children have been watering the kitchen garden at lunchtimes with waste water from lunch. Grow, garden, grow!
