Any time I am accidentally called "Mum" or purposely, astudent refers to me as their "School Mum". I think it showsthe student has trust in me and is very comfortable in thelearning and activities we are completing.

LOTS of academic readings for my university course butsupplemented by a really easy to read put me to sleep novel.

As you are undoubtedly aware there was some distressingcontent posted on social media this week.

• the name and photo of the student;

• the times of the student’s HSC exams.

MacKillop works closely with social media expert KirraPendergast from Safe on Social. I reproduce for you her adviceon talking with young people about suicide and supportingthem to be safe on social media.

This is a challenging topic to discuss with young people. Weadvise that you be careful not to draw attention to it or stimulatecuriosity for a child to search for it.

The content is still online and will take some time to comedown. It has been embedded into videos ranging from kittensplaying to Mario Cart. These videos are on TikTok, Instagram,YouTube, and YouTube for Kids.

In talks to primary school age students, I always say, "if you eversee anything yucky online that makes you feel scared, upset oreven if it makes you feel a bit weird in the tummy, talk to Mum,Dad or another trusted adult."

With high school students, I always mention similar, butobviously in language to suit the audience. I also let them knowif they don't feel comfortable talking to their parents that theycan speak with one of the school welfare team, a teacher,another trusted adult, or call Kids Helpline.

Please make sure your children know to speak up.

Tips for Parents:

Carnegie Mellon researchers estimated that for an averageindividual to read all the terms and conditions we should –it would take 76 days. So, you could legitimately argue theimpossibility of this. Instagram's Terms and Conditions are over5000 words long. Facebook sits at around 15,000. TikTok has

a couple of pages; Google's terms and conditions are shorterthan Facebook.

The practice of tech companies is to either: bombard you withso much detail, it is incredibly unrealistic to expect anyone(especially a child) to read through them all, or to create briefterms and conditions that are deceptively simple, and in effect,sign away all rights to your content, and personal informationby using vague legal speak. Some of the things they state are:

"you grant us a non-exclusive, transferrable, sub-licensable,royalty-free worldwide license to use any IP content that youpost on or in connection with the app."

Pictures, videos, posts, private messages, ANYTHING you haveon your page is licensed to the app and can be sold or sharedfor media and marketing purposes.

It also includes:

All device information, your connections, what you share, andwhat you delete.

What groups you are members of and what you follow.

Your location and your IP address and the length of time youspend online.

How you bank, your billing details, delivery, and home address.

What your friends post about you.

Wi-Fi nearby and Bluetooth "handshakes."

Mobile towers nearby, mobile number, connections speeds

Your ISP and all the cookies that are stored on your device.

1. Be as involved in your child's online life as you aretheir offline life. To them, it is just "life" it is so blurrednow there is no definition in the eyes of a youngperson.

2. Think about the age recommendations; it is not illegalfor a child to use social media under the age of 13years with their parents' permission but think aboutwhat they are being exposed to. When we sign up touse apps, there are extensive terms and conditionsof use. By ticking that box accepting them, you aresigning a document that puts all the onus back onthe user. You are signing up to be a data generatingcommodity, handing over personal information thatcan be sold and shared at the app's discretion.When you click "I agree" to most terms andconditions on social media platforms – you give it upby legal contract. And you probably didn't even readthem. Most adults don't let alone a child.

3. Use parental controls where possible to minimiseexposure to harmful and distressing content.

4. Engage with them about their favourite social mediaapp and get them to teach you about it so you can atleast know the basics. Get them to show you how toblock and report so you can be sure they know howto.

5. Put healthy boundaries in place. Don't ban them fromtheir device if they forget to do a household chore orare naughty for something totally unrelated to theirdevice. Do not take it off them if they speak up aboutsomething that has happened online because youare scared. This is the quickest way to drive all theconversations that you want to be havingunderground. Instead, if you have a healthy boundarylike all devices are banned from the bathroom orbedroom. So then if they are caught with their devicein either place, you ban them for a week. This way,they will learn that it is safe to speak up about what isgoing on online without punishment unless theybreak the rules about device use. Limit use to thefamily room with younger kids so that you canmonitor them.

6. Be a good role model. Keep your screen time incheck. There is no use banning the phones frombedrooms if you go to bed with yours each night, forexample.

Recently, I completed a self review of my performance in therole of Leader of Pastoral Care. As part of this process I hadto identify areas for development or improvement. This wasrelatively easy. I can sometimes become closeted in my office,occupied with work, but isolated from the young people that Iam supposed to know and suppport.

My goal is to be present in the school yard at break times,deliberately seeking out the students from Year 8. For the pastfew weeks, I have spent almost every recess and lunch timewandering the College yard. The benefits have been immediateand obvious. Many of the young people of Year 8 are moreready to initiate conversation. I am finding out more about theboys and girls’ lives, their interests and connections. Boys andgirls who have had to come to me and face consequences formisbehaviour, have the opportunity in the yard for a relaxedconversation. In short, this time is spent building and growingrelationships. Nothing says more clearly that you valuesomeone than your preparedness to spend time with them.

Jesus recognised this truth when he said to his disciples, “Letthe little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for thekingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14)

The same maxim of presence applies to parenting and to allrelationships. People, especially our children, will know theirvalue by the time that we afford them. General ‘busyness’ andthe necessary time in work in order to provide life’s essentials

He noted, that in this age,with so many outside or external influences on a teenager’s life,there are three things that parents can aim to control at homethat can make a positive influence for their child at school.These include:

Originally, Jasper Jones was a novel written by Craig Silveyin 2009. This was then adapted into a play by award winningplaywright, Kate Mulvany. Finally it was adapted into a movie in2017, starring Levi Miller as Charlie and Aaron L. McGrath asJasper. Jasper Jones is a classic coming-of-age mystery set ina small town in Western Australia in the 1960's. We first meetthe protagonist, Charlie Bucktin, a fourteen year old bookishteenage boy who gets a knock on the window in the middle ofthe night. It’s Jasper Jones who is “known throughout Corriganas the worst kid in town,” and he proceeds to ask Charlie forhelp. Charlie decides to follow Jasper to wherever it is he’sleading him. Then his life changes forever.

• Sleep:Sleep: where teens require more sleep than adults(ideally 8.5 to 10 hours per night) in order for the mindto recuperate and cope with anxiety.

• TechnologyTechnology usageusage: where technology should betreated as an invited guest into the home, not anassumed resident. Balancing time in front of screenswith other activities and avoiding screens for an hourbefore bed.

• AlcoholAlcohol andand drugdrug useuse: of course noting that bothof these can negatively influence impulse control,damages young growing minds, and reduces theability to achieve ‘good’ sleep.

Although set in the 1960's, Jasper Jones is still relevant toaudiences today. The play addresses themes such as racism,injustice and social exclusion in Australian society. Even thoughwe do not have an indigenous male in our Year 10 Dramaclass, we still wanted to convey the story of Jasper and thehardships he undergoes as a result of his race and background.The play also raises the taboo topic of teenage suicide, as wellas growing up, first loves, family unity and a sense of belongingin communities.

The 2020 Year 10 Drama Class and their director, Pauline Cain,have demonstrated a great dedication to putting together thisproduction, and their efforts are to be commended. Despitethe issues faced by the coronavirus, they’ve managed to puttogether an entertaining and emotional play which you are allwelcome to see on the 5th and 6th of November; currently vialive stream.

Not only are there core lessons we can take away, the play isgreat for a chuckle or even for a good cry.

ExamsExams

Next week (Week 9), we embark upon a period of seniorschooling that our Year 11 students haven't experienced before- a flexible exam block. This means that students are onlyrequired to be at the College when they have an exam. Theexam timetable is your son or daughter's responsibility so theyneed to ensure they check the assessment calendar and knowwhat exams they have on which days/times to avoid being lateor missing exams which will incur a penalty.

With a flexible timetable comes the logistics of getting your childto and from the College in the middle of the day. Students arewelcome to come to the College outside of their exam and doexam prep in the study centre. For safety reasons however,students are not permitted to travel in friends’ cars during theschool day.

If your child is ill on the day of an exam, please call the officeby 8.45am to let us know. Upon their return, they will needto bring in a Doctor's Certificate for the period that they wereunwell, and be prepared to do the exam on the next schoolday they have recovered. In the case of multiple exams missed,the sitting of these exams will be co-ordinated by Ms JoanneStuart. If it is a Hand In task it is required to be handed inregardless of illness by the due date and time.

Your child can wear either uniform during the exam block, aslong as it is worn correctly. If it is incorrect, after the exam theywill be asked to stay at the College for the remainder of theschool day.

Now that all the official rules are out of the way, one of themost important things to remember during this time is that thiscan be quite a stressful and overwhelming situation for our Year11 students. Having gone through the process obviously as ateacher but also as a parent, offering support, encouragementand perspective will help keep your child in the best frame ofmind to achieve their desired results and be the calmest theycan possibly be. One of our students, KateKate FieldField, approached me after beingimpacted by the news out of Lebanon concerning thedevastating explosion in Beirut. Kate wanted to do somefundraising for those affected. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19rules we were restricted with what fundraising could be donebut PC2 and PCSS responded, and a total of $250.00 wasraised. This money will now be donated to World Vision for thisspecific cause. Well done Kate, and those who contributed.

Students have been receiving their trial examination results.These results are a great way for students to determine theirstrengths and weaknesses and give them focus for the studyperiod ahead.

HSC Music Concert

Last Friday our HSC Music students put on their only concertfor the year. It’s been hard having such limited performanceopportunities with many events being cancelled, however, all oftheir peers came out to support them during this lunchtime.

The applause was greatly appreciated, and it was evident thatour performers’ hard work through the year has paid off.

The HSC Music students have been putting on a show in anempty theatre for most of this year, and were grateful to have aresponsive audience to perform to.

Last Saturday the HSC music students, and their dedicatedteacher Mrs Sam Adams, came into the College to run throughtheir pieces in preparation for their upcoming exam. It wasevident how much practice they’ve each been putting in. Bigcongratulations to the following students as they approach thefinal stretch; Abbey Johnston, Taryin McIntyre, Robbie Moore,Grace Pfab, and Francesca Plentinger.

Hastings Education FundHastings Education Fund

The Hastings Education Fund was established to provide muchneeded financial assistance and support to local youth to helpthem achieve their post high school education, training andvocation aspirations. We recognise that the cost of regionalstudents pursuing their post high school goals is often muchgreater than those of their metropolitan counterparts and thatsometimes these costs can be prohibitive.

With this in mind, the Hastings Education Fund fundraisesthroughout the year and accepts donations from local residentsand businesses in order to provide financial grants to studentswho need an extra helping hand. The funds come directly fromyour local community – none of it is government funded –celebrating the aspirations of local youth and working to helpthem achieve these aspirations. It’s our way of saying “webelieve in you and want to support your goals”.
