To begin with, students were asked to read about the life and works of Anton Chekhov. They were given a list of short stories to choose from for their presentation. Interestingly most of them selected humorous stories which included The Joy, The Happy Man, The Bet, The Duel, Oh!The Public, A lottery Ticket and The Boor. Then they were divided into smaller groups to encourage the team spirit and to

facilitate more individual attention. Each group was given a leader to explain the action plan and to set the expectations accurately. During story reading session children discussed the plot, characters, settings and the ending of their respective stories. Initially the idea of enacting Chekhov‘s stories was unnerving for the children because they found the stories open ended and confusing. Gradually they realized that in these stories characters were more important and the plot was secondary. They could relate with the characters. The children were given some acting lessons to improve their acting skills including the body language, voice modulation and eye contact. The rehearsal sessions were very interesting and fun filled for them. They used to look forward to imitating each other‘s characters, correcting each other and laughing at humorous dialogues. According to them,

they felt better equipped in writing the scripts. Parents, teachers and students from sister schools witnessed the presentation. Dr. Kalyani Roy and other management members also graced the occasion. The students were appreciated by Dr. Roy for their acting skills, pronunciation, scripts and their overall effort.

Workshop on Critical Thinking The Education Resource Centre for Cambridge Schools organized a workshop on Critical Thinking in the Classroom on Wednesday, May 24, 2017. The Resource Person was Eminent Educationist Mrs. IndraniLahiri, a Teacher Trainer specializing in Multiple Intelligences. The workshop was attended by middle-school teachers of five sister schools - Cambridge Greater Noida, Cambridge Srinivaspuri, Cambridge New Friends Colony, Cambridge Indirapuram and the host school, Cambridge NOIDA. The workshop began by dismantling the belief that the teacher was a ‗sage on the stage‘. Mrs. Lahiri firmly believed that in the learner-centric classroom of the twenty-first century, the teacher turns into a ‗guide by the side’ whilst students develop critical thinking skills via classroom transactions. In an interactive session, teachers identified the traits of a critical thinker and sought to understand if they were one. They worked together in groups to solve questions based on lateral thinking, and recognized the fact that it was more important to think and analyze than merely know the correct answers. Effective strategies such as brainstorming, graphic organizers, KWL chart, role play and Bloom‘s Taxonomy were revisited and all teachers were encouraged to use the same in their classrooms. Mrs. IndraniLahiri closed the session with a poignant question every teacher must ask – why should my learner be interested in what I‘m about to teach. Furthermore, the participants acknowledged the need for critical thinking to become the ‗culture of each classroom‘ in order to raise sensitized global citizens of the future.

Besides being a prolific writer on academic topics, MrLahiri has been a national level athlete and a bronze medalist at the National Equestrian Championships. MrLahiri began the workshop by stressing that teachers have to be groomed and prepared to take on higher roles, with the primary focus always being the students. He narrated various incidents from his vast experience to emphasise that decision making is not only seeking legal opinions but more importantly taking a moral standpoint and then sticking to it. Unity and building consensus while taking decisions, must be kept in the forefront by decision makers. Collaboration and teamwork will always help the Institution to surge ahead. The interests of the Institution must always be kept in mind and should guide decision making in complex situations. Advice should always be sought from experts, but the final decision making and standing up to decisions must always be yours. Leadership is about seizing the moment, analysing the situation and then taking a concerted decision. Leaders must rise above just being good managers and must have a clear vision and a sense of ownership. A ‗Mission Statement‘ must be developed and leaders should live and breathe it. Team building is important and all members of the team should be made to believe in the ‗Vision‘ and ‗Mission Statement‘ of the Institution. All members, including the peons, must be made to feel a sense of belonging to the Institution. Passion and a sense of purpose should percolate down to all members of the Institution and the leader must lead by personal example. Regular faculty meetings must encourage teachers to share their experiences, in order to learn from each other. Teachers must be encouraged to share the innovative measures that they have taken in the classroom. One must keep abreast with the latest happenings in the field of education and must not get bogged down by the mundane. Critical thinking and asking questions must always be encouraged at all levels and particularly by the students. The leadership workshop and the personal anecdotes & leadership advice shared by MrLahiri was inspiring and motivating for the Principals and Headmistresses.
