Standards-based Grading Practices
Elementary
• Discovery Elementary School began standards-based instruction, grading, and reporting in Fall 2015. Ashlawn and Oakridge joined the pilot in Fall of 2018.
• Fall 2019 – expansion to 8 elementary schools (Abingdon, Barrett, Fleet, Hoffman Boston, McKinley, Nottingham, Randolph, & Tuckahoe)
• Fall 2021 – expansion to 6 more elementary schools (Arlington Science Focus, Barcroft, Innovation, Long Branch, Montessori Public School of Arlington, & the elementary Virtual Learning Program).
Secondary
• Yorktown High School began a pilot of standards-based assessment in Fall 2015. This year, 11 teachers use standards-based assessment and report a conversion to letter grades.
• Individual teachers and CLTs from across the county have elected to use SBA after attending professional development sessions.
• Gunston shifted to schoolwide implementation of SBA in Fall 2020.

Community of Practice
What?
Book study of Grading for Equity by Joe Feldman
How?
Engaging as practitioners to learn from each other and share current practices and experiences
Over 100 teachers and leaders from across 12 sites are engaging in "research & study" to -• Develop a shared understanding
of equitable grading practices
• Envision how we might implement those practices in classrooms
• Use our shared learning to help inform upcoming grading and homework policy revisions

Equitable Grading Practices
No Late Penalty
• Late penalties lead to inaccurate grades, as they reflect student behavior, not achievement.
• Late penalties lead to biased grades, penalizing students with learning differences and fewer resources.
12
2
Equitable Grading Practices
No Extra Credit
• Extra Credit leads to inaccurate grades, especially when given for non-academic tasks (Ex: bringing in a box of tissues).
• Extra credit leads to biased grades, penalizing students with fewer resources.
13
2
Equitable Grading Practices
Redos & Retakes
• Reduce pressure on students to constantly be at their best.
• Motivate students to continue learning by offering redemption.
• Increase rigor by insisting that all students achieve mastery rather than accept failure.
14
2
Equitable Grading Practices
Ungraded Formative Assessments
• Mistakes are vital to learning.• Students are less likely to take risks when they fear they will
be graded down for making a mistake.• Students are more likely to cheat or copy when homework is
graded.
We can motivate students to practice without assigning a grade.15
