Mrs. Avis Silver S

JESSICA BYKOWSKI Welcome! This is my 15th year teaching! I was born and raised in South Jersey. I attended Mount St. Mary’s University when it was a College. That is where I met my husband. We have 3 children, Andy, Ryan and Adam. We live in Olney. I enjoy sports and root for the Eagles, Phillies, Cubs and sometimes, Redskins. I love listening to music and dancing. I enjoy cooking. I love the 80’s and family time!

JENNIFER NEELYI grew up in Florida and went to the

University of Alabama, ROLL TIDE!!

My family moved here from Pennsylvania

four years ago. This is my second year at

Sherwood Elementary School and I hope this

year is as amazing as my first.

I have two daughters, Lucy who is a Senior

and Fiona who is a Sophomore.

As a family we enjoy traveling, hiking, and

running 5Ks. When I am not at school I love

to bake and read.

Erica ValensteinI live in Howard County with my husband, two daughters and one cat. This is my eighth year teaching here at Sherwood. I love it because I grew up right here in Olney and graduated from Sherwood High School. I continued my education at Towson University, then received my Master’s Degree at University of Maryland.Although I have a lot of hobbies including snowboarding and drawing, I love hanging out with my family the most.

Sommany Hongmanivanh

● Pronounced Som-ma-ny Hong-mani-vanh● 7th year teaching in MCPS and 1st year here at Sherwood Elementary● Special Educator● Received Bachelors Degree in Biobehavioral Health from Penn State University and Master's Degree in Special Education from Shippensburg University. ● Currently in the Masters of Curriculum and Instruction with Leadership Focus at McDaniel College● Grew up in Boiling Springs, PA● Like to spend time with family and friends, try new places to eat, and travel with my

husband

I was born and grew up in Chicago, Illinois also known as the “Windy City”. As a child, I attended the neighborhood public school and needed to walk to school, even when it was cold and snowy. Schools almost never closed! I walked home and back to school for lunch each day too.

I attended Northern Ill. University to get my teaching certificate in

elementary and special education. While teaching, I earned my master’s degree in reading. I moved to Maryland in 1980, after getting married. Here I can still enjoy the change of seasons, but not the extreme cold. I have two grown up children and one grandbaby, Caiden, who has stolen my heart.

In my spare time I enjoy playing adventure games (without violence) and

word games on my Kindle, reading books, cross-stitching and doing Samuri Sudoku (5 puzzles in one.) When teaching, I enjoy seeing student’s eyes light up when they excitedly say, “I got it!” That’s the best!

3RD GRADE’S HOMEWORK PROCESSEach homework packet is sent home at the beginning of every week and is due at the

end of the week. The assigned homework is meant to increase student confidence and build foundational skills. This is one of the many ways we hope to keep the

home to school connection strong.

Math Practice (3x per week):● Twice per week, students will receive an opportunity to practice what we are

currently learning in the classroom.● One night per week will be focused on strengthening your child’s basic fact

foundational knowledge. This will help support the grade level content we will be learning in the classroom. Although this is assigned once per week, it is encouraged to continually find opportunities to practice briefly throughout the week.

Word Study (1x per week):● One night per week, students will have the opportunity to build their vocabulary.

This vocabulary is a foundational skill that will help to strengthen your child’s reading and writing skills.

Agenda books should be

signed every evening to

confirm your child has

completed that night’s

homework.

Inquiry ProjectsQuarter 1: Community Action Inquiry Project Students research organizations created to help others and toward the Common Good.Quarter 2: Now and Then Students research a technology and how it has progressed.

Quarter 3: Realistic Fiction Book Students research authors’ techniques and create their own realistic fiction book.Quarter 4: Issue Inquiry Project Students research an issue and gather facts to then form an opinion.

Book Projects Each quarter we will send home an At-Home-Reading Project. Students will choose a book of their choice to complete a Book Project on. We will send home a few options. Students will share their projects around the due date.

STUDENT LEARNING NOTEBOOKS*Will come home most Fridays*There is a reflection sheet that will be completed by your child in class. Please look that over and sign. *New assessments will be placed at the back of each section. (look for dates)* If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher by e-mail.

Birthdays this year will be celebrated in the classroom on the closest school day to your child's birthday. Teachers will provide your child with his or her own Birthday Bag with goodies inside for them to enjoy throughout the day. Upon opening this bag, the entire class will sing "Happy Birthday" to the special student.

In order for parents to make their child's birthday special, please feel free to sign up to be the Mystery Reader on the closest day available to your child's special day! You may also even consider donating the book you read to the classroom in honor of your child. This would be something special to stay in the classroom with your child's name on it!

On Tuesdays this year, Parents and Family members will be able to secretly sign up to be a “Mystery Reader” for our class. Each classroom will have an online sign up for you to choose the Tuesday that works best for you! You may choose one of you and your child’s favorite books to read to share with the class!

As something extra special during this time, if you would like to donate the book you read to our classroom in honor of your child, we would be thrilled!
