LOBSTICK ZONE

Grand Trunk High School, Evansburg The month of November has flown by, and it’s hard to be-lieve we are into December already. We are looking forward to the holiday season and the many activities that come with it.

Grand Trunk High School started their annual food drive on November 22nd with a food donation goal of at least 500lbs. The students and staff of the school will work together this year to see if we can surpass our previous year’s food do-nations.

December also sees the beginning of the basketball season. The senior teams will play their opening tournament here at home on December 2nd and 3rd with games being played at both Grand Trunk High School and Wildwood School. Games will start at 12pm at Grand Trunk with the Senior High Ted-dies Girls’ team playing against Onoway. The boys will kick off their tournament at Grand Trunk with a game against Onoway at 1:40pm. Information for all other games and times will be available at the schools during the tournament.

The Grand Trunk High School Student’s Union has planned a long list of activities to celebrate the upcoming holiday season:

• Hot Chocolate and Coffee Day

• Winter Hat Day

• Breakfast Day

• Door Decorating

• Red and Green Day

• Cooke and Milk Day

• Event Day

Niton Central School, Niton JunctionEach year our school holds two Reading Blitz’s, one in the fall, the other in the spring, which each run for six weeks. We assess all our students using ‘Fountas & Pinell’ and then group them according to levels, rather than grades, in order to better meet the needs of each individual student. This is the first year we have extended the blitz into our junior high and it has gone over very well. The students really enjoy getting to go to different classes, with mixed groups to read and at the end of each six week period, we notice an improvement in reading levels. Everybody wins!

On November 9th, our Grade 5 class hosted our annual Re-membrance Day Ceremony. They invited the Wildwood Le-gion to join us who performed the Coat of Arms Ceremony. Each class played a significant role in the Ceremony and found creative ways to honour those who fought and con-tinue to fight for our freedom.

In mid November our junior high leadership class hosted a pep-rally, to get our teams and school pumped up for upcoming zones. The teams decided that they wanted to challenge the teachers, so the teachers and E.A.’s banned together to create a team. Our leadership class did a great job of organizing events and competitions for between each set, so that the spectators could actively participate too. It was a great way to lead into the zones that took place later that week.

The end of November brought our Grade 2’s from both split classes together to create decorations for the Christmas tree at central office. We had a great group of parent help-ers offer to come in and spend an afternoon helping the Grade 2’s in creating wonderfully unique ornaments. Once the ornaments were complete, the Grade 2’s headed to central office for tree decorating, hot chocolate, and a story read by our very own Supt. Gray. It was a great opportunity to bring friends together and celebrate in the spirit of the season!

Wildwood School, Wildwood Wildwood School’s students and staff have been capitaliz-ing on unique experiences as they appear. Most recently, Wildwood Public Library was host to guest author Robert Feagan, and all students in K to Grade 9 had the priv-ilege to spend an afternoon enjoying his readings and entertaining stories of life growing up in the North - Inuit throat singing, lively and unforgettable vignettes about a variety of northern animals, cultures and climate, and the ability to see and touch carvings, beadwork, harpoons, and many other northern artifacts from his personal col-lection.

As volleyball season comes to a close, the sign-up sheet for the junior high basketball teams are filling fast! Thank you to the students, coaches, and parents for their time and dedication to ensure our students have the opportu-nity to participate in a number of extra-curricular sports such as volleyball, basketball, archery, and track and field throughout the year.

According to the dictionary, ‘opportunity’ is defined as 1. a favorable combination of circumstances, time, and place 2 : a chance to better oneself. Every year Wildwood School provides two student-led conferences to give stu-dents the opportunity to demonstrate their progress and for parents to join in on the celebration and support their child in demonstrating their highest level of learning. Defi-nitely an empowering experience that we are not willing to let go by! Another exceptional event held two times a year at Wildwood School is the Scholastic Book Fair.

Wildwood School, con’t.Shiver me timbers! This fall’s Scholastic Bookaneer Book Fair was a pirate theme ‘Books are Our Treasure’ and it was a squash buckling success! A whole boat-load of books and kits washed ashore and into the hands of book lovers everywhere! Students enjoyed a number of fun activities, awesome contests, prizes and giveaways held throughout the ten day event. An extra-curricular experi-ence of this caliber cannot be held without the dedication of staff, parents, the ‘Successful Kids and Family’ group, and community members. A HUGE thank you to those that volunteered their time during the student-led con-ference evenings.

Choir Club AND Chimes Club provides a fine arts related activity for Grade 1-9 participants. We are grateful for Mrs. Kowalchuk’s time and expertise and look forward to seeing how her students’ performances become part of this year’s Christmas concert on December 14th!

We would be remiss to not acknowledge that some of our students’ most remarkable opportunities happen off site! K-6 students were invited to participate in the Leaman Exchange’s Halloween Festival this year and were so in-credibly entertained by a multitude of amazing activities created by this Wildwood School family - a truly memora-ble event we were so happy to be a part of. A.H. Dakin SchoolMulti-age levelled reading groups ran throughout the month. Our commitment to prepare our students for the world of work can be seen in our enthusiastic participa-tion in the ‘Take Your Kid to Work’ event on November 2nd. At the house teams rally in the afternoon on November 25th, groups of students competed for points in fun relay races and challenges. Our students enhance their sense of community and co-operation through multi-age clus-ters engaging in both academic and social/physical activ-ities. Our breakfast club operates three mornings a week and as colder weather approaches, we will begin ‘Sun-rise Gym’ so that students may come into school if they choose every weekday morning. In addition to SWAT and green activities, we are also beginning to provide some additional in-school happenings at noon break such as GoPro video club and library helpers.

The theme for our Christmas concerts on December 14th

is ‘Charlie Brown Christmas’. We hope that we’ll have a great turnout from our community!

École Pine Grove Middle SchoolThere is no doubt that students are more engaged when participating in an activity they enjoy. This is one of the reasons why options, extra-curricular activities, and special school events and days, are so important. Often it is these activities which give students a sense of belonging while building a strong school community.

Pine Grove is very proud of the variety of activities in which students can participate at our school. Sports programs run throughout the year and offer students the chance to participate in volleyball, basketball, cross-country running, golf, wrestling, badminton and track and field. Opportuni-ties to participate drama, music and fine art are also avail-able at Pine Grove.

The cross-graded option held on Friday afternoon offers some unique opportunities including loom beading, girls group, cosmetology, scrapbooking, driver’s education and student council. New this year, some students are taking computer coding which allows them to work on creating projects like video games and animations.

This school year, fun days have included twin day, sports jersey day, turkey trot/crazy sock day with many more yet to come! Students always enjoy the Much Music dances, held three times a year, and the annual Walk-a-Thon held in September. Another established event is ‘Eggs In Space’, a Grade 7 science challenge held each March. A school talent show will be held in February and coming up this month is the annual door decorating contest. There’s al-ways something going on at Pine Grove!

Evergreen SchoolWe have a number of extra-curricular programs to en-hance student learning, and specifically leadership. These programs include School Spirit, Recess Squad, The Crew, Green Team, Swat Team, Cross-Country Skiing, Running Club, Stitching Club and Choir Club.

School Spirit is comprised of Grade 5 students who work to plan fun activities for the whole school. These include dress up days, reading to classes, buddy benches, and other fun activities.

Recess Squad is a leadership group that plans activities for our whole school cross-graded groups. They have named each group and call different groups to the gym each week for an activity. The Recess Squad leads the activities while the other children participate.

Green Team is made up of Grade 4 students who take charge of our recycling program at Evergreen. They empty each class’s paper, cardboard, plastic and beverage contain-er recycling. They also sort the items and get them ready for pickup.

Swat Team is a team of Grade 4 and 5 students who lead healthy initiatives such as daily physical activity and fruit tasting where each month, we select a new and unique fruit and the students cut the fruit and serve it to every student in our school. They also provide interesting information about each fruit when they deliver the samples for tasting.

Each student at Evergreen has the opportunity to go above and beyond their regular classroom learning by participat-ing in a variety of extra-curricular programs and activities.

Parkland Composite High SchoolParkland is very excited to announce that they will be in the Edson Christmas Parade on the 2nd with their first ever ‘PCHS Winter Wonderland’ float. Staff and students will be giving away candy and a few extra goodies so don’t miss out! Parkland’s ‘Cobalt the Mascot’ will also be there to help celebrate the festive season. We are also beginning our annual food bank drive until the 14th. Classes are to bring in food donations, and this is where the real competition begins: each class will create a 3D design with the donated items (such as what grocery stores have done with their cases of pop). The winning class will receive a very delicious treat! Did we mention that we are taking part in the 12 Days to Christmas? Staff will be broken up into individual groups where they will host an event during the 12 days of December be-fore winter break. Some events include: hiding elves throughout the school; reindeer races; $150.00 to turn off the Christmas music; cookies; ugly sweater day; and many more.

École Westhaven SchoolOur Healthy Initiative Activity program was very success-ful last year. With such great success, we are continuing with it this year. We start off each day with 10 minutes of physical activity. During nice weather outside, we walk around the school grounds and then we move indoors. Our Healthy Initiative Team has developed numerous ac-tivities for each classroom and we will be cycling through these activities on a weekly basis. Research indicates an increase in student focus and achievement by do-ing just ten minutes of physical activity in the morning. We are excited about providing this opportunity for our Westhaven students.

Our monthly feather assemblies continue to be a positive celebration. We are able to recognize everyone who has received a feather for the month by cheering and clap-ping. Feathers are given for citizenship actions (show-ing caring, respect, kindness, helpfulness, etc.) and/or for academic excellence. All feathers go on the bulletin board then into the draw bucket (10 to 12 are selected to receive a little prize). We find that many students in our school are doing great things - we are very proud of them! Check out the bulletin board in the front foyer to see the numerous feathers that are hung up every month for these wonderful achievements.

Harry Collinge High SchoolIt is hard to believe that December is already here. Aside from the obvious holiday activities, December at Harry Collinge means that basketball and wrestling are now well underway and student athletes are preparing for the first tournaments of the year. We would like to thank all of our coaches for stepping up in such a big way to support our kids.

The Harry Collinge High School staff is looking forward to participating in a blanket exercise early in the month. The exercise uses local First Nation and Métis knowledge and wisdom to provide a much deeper understanding of this important aspect of our community.

We are again collecting donations for holiday hampers. This is a collaboration with the Yellowhead Emergency Shelter for Women. Each grade is responsible for a hamper for one family. Cash donations will be used to purchase additional hamper items and gift cards for things like groceries. The students’ union is again hosting a Christmas lunch. This year, on the 15th, all of the members of the HCHS community will be able to enjoy a free Christmas lunch. As part of our ongoing house com-petition, we are collecting budget saver coupons to help fund this initiative.

Do you enjoy live music? Make your way down to HCHS on the 8th for our winter band concert. It is guaranteed to make you tap your toes and smile. Mr. Madsen’s musicians put on a great show and it will get you in the spirit of the season!

École Mountain View SchoolDo we have a club for you! If a student at École Mountain View School wishes to create a club all they need to do is think of a ‘club activity’, find a sponsor staff member, and design a poster with relevant information for the ‘Club Zone’. Rubics Cube, Yoga, Pokeman... You name it. Of course we can’t dismiss our ‘Dumpster Divers’. A group of committed students and teachers driven to make our world a better place.

On another note, teachers and parents have been coach-ing volleyball and basketball teams after school. Our teams have been playing games against different schools around the division. The culminating point for the volley-ball teams was the GYAC tournament in Edson. Our stu-dent athletes are continuing to learn individual and team skills and will be competing in basketball very soon!

Crescent Valley SchoolAt Crescent Valley, the first few months have been very exciting. We have had many of our parents in our school to see awards, meet the teachers, and volunteer for en-hancements like our swimming program. As a new ad-ministrator, I have enjoyed so many aspects of my new role: I get to play intramural dodge ball with our Grade 6 students; I wish a happy birthday to someone almost every day; and I get to hand out BEAR (virtues program) awards over the intercom daily. I have had more high 5’s, hugs, and good mornings in the last 3 months than the last 10 years. How awesome is that! The staff at Crescent Valley is fabulous, and they keep this school strong and virtuous.

For the first time, Crescent Valley has combined Grade 5, 6, and 7 students together for Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) options. These CTF classes occur ev-ery Friday from 12:15 – 2pm. The current classes focus on art, circuit training, environmental education, technology, cooking, and drama. Students and staff have been very excited by this new undertaking, and Friday afternoons are an exciting time at our school. The projects in each CTF class have been exciting and everyone has been ea-ger to share their successes.

Our winter concert will focus on celebrations from around the world. Mrs. Degerstedt will coordinate a wonderful program on December 6th and 7th.

Crescent Valley will enjoy a turkey luncheon on December 15th at 11:30am. This long standing tradition is enjoyed by students, staff, and parents alike. We enjoy a chance to share food with all of the people interested in being a part of our community. As always, we thank our parents for being such a big part of our luncheon.

Grande Cache Community High School, SonRise Christian ProgramStudents can’t wait for our upcoming Marmot Ski Day on December 8th. We have 36 lucky skiers who will be bused to Jasper for a great day of skiing and boarding!

Our girls’ volleyball team concluded their season with a tournament in Hinton in mid-November. The girls were very competitive, winning vs Harry Collinge and coming very close in all their other contests.

During the months of November and December, our Grade 11 and 12 students from the ELITE program went out on jobsites to work for two weeks. We really appreciate the valuable experience that our students gain from this op-portunity. We want to recognize the following businesses that make this opportunity possible: Advantage Automo-tive, AWN: Automotives, AWN: Welding, Foothills Forest-ry Products, McNeil Construction, Milner Power, Monteith Building Group, Performance Vac Service, Town of Grande Cache, and Troyer.

Our November ‘Dress Up Day’ was very popular with Son-Rise students who enjoyed wearing a stash and tie for the day! This month we have lots of special days to enjoy the Christmas season at school. We conclude our dress up days with an all-time favourite, ‘Ugly Christmas Sweater Day’ on December 15th.

Since we are without a gym to hold a Christmas event, SonRise will be holding a Christmas family fun swim on December 12th from 5:30-7pm. Another sign of Christmas is our SonRise students will be taking their annual walk up to visit our local seniors to sing Christmas carols to the residents on December 14th. As a staff at GCCHS, we want to wish all our families a wonderful Christmas holiday and a Happy New Year in 2017!

Jasper Junior/ Senior High

Jasper Junior Senior High School has had an exciting and interesting past month. During the month of November, our school has participated in a multitude of activities and events. Our four volleyball teams finished their seasons with games and tournaments throughout the month. Thanks to the junior high and senior high players and coaches for representing the school so well. Other interesting and noteworthy events in November included: Take Our Kids to Work Day; Parent /Teacher Interviews; a school assembly about resilience with motivational speaker and musician Peter Katz; a special Remembrance Day Ceremony put on by the Grade 12’s; a Grade 8 ‘No Stone Left Alone Ceremony’ at the Jasper cemetery; and a moustache growing contest for students and staff for Movember and prostate cancer research.

The students and staff of Jasper High School are look-ing forward to the events planned in December and the subsequent holidays. Best Wishes to all the schools and communities in the Grande Yellowhead Public School Di-vision!

Summitview SchoolBefore we move into the exciting events of December, we would like to take a moment to mention a few important events in November. Our annual Remembrance Day Cere-mony was held on the 10th. Homeroom classes made and presented wreaths at the ceremony led by Mr. Webster. Special guests included Mr. Claude Menard from the Royal Canadian Legion, the Junior Rangers, and the Girl Guides (who sang a beautiful song at the ceremony). Mr. Price’s class did a lovely job of reciting ‘In Flander’s Fields’ and some students from Mrs. Monroe’s Grade 6 classes read their heartfelt poems “If I were a soldier’s…”. Students from Ms. Golding’s Grade 5 class put together a wonderful vid-eo featuring animals in war that really got people thinking about the important roles different animals played in vari-ous wars and conflicts. Finally Mrs. Aiken’s Grade 7 students made and presented some dog tags representing First Na-tions veterans; students spoke about the importance and experience of some of our First Nations veterans, people whose contributions are often overlooked in Canadian his-tory.

Amanda MacDougall and Caprice Anderson from our Par-ent Council happily accepted a donation from ConocoPhil-lips. We have been trying to raise money for a number of years to build a new playground for Summitview School, the $5000 from ConocoPhillips will certainly help us to get closer to our dream of a new playground. Thank you so much ConocoPhillips!

December is a busy month for schools and Summitview is no exception. Our book fair is happening November 28th – December 1st at the Summitview library. On the final day, the book fair will be open until 7pm. That evening we will be showing a movie (TBA) in the Eagles Nest starting at 5pm. Hot dogs, popcorn, cookies, and juice will be for sale that evening. Since this is also report card day, it is a great time for students to wind down and celebrate their accomplish-ments with an evening movie.

On Thursday December 8th, our Grade 7 students will be hosting a Christmas dance which will feature food, a winter wonderland hallway sleigh ride, Christmas pictures, raffles, and an ugly Christmas sweater contest. The following week Grade 7 and 8 students will travel to Marmot Basin for a day of skiing/snowboarding on the 14th and then later that eve-ning, Summitview will host students from Sheldon Coates for their Christmas concert followed by our Summitview Christmas concert on the 15th which begins at 6:30pm.

Students will be dismissed at noon on December 16th to begin their Christmas break.

THE LEARNING CONNECTION (TLC)

The Learning Connection staff provide many opportuni-ties and special activities for the youth who attend our five TLC campus schools. Most recently, TLC students were accompanied by teachers Barb Shepherd and Derek McKinnon to the Palisades Centre in Jasper for a Leadership program. Students enjoyed the National Park environments while learning about and honing their leadership skills.

TLC teacher and first aid instructor, Tina Kozyra, rou-tinely offers First Aid, CPR/AED training for students and staff. This necessary life skill not only provides practical training for youth and staff members, it also results in credits under the Career and Technology Studies umbrel-la of courses for students who participate.

On December 7th, TLC students who enjoy live theatre and the arts, will travel to Edmonton to see ‘A Christ-mas Carol’ at the Citadel Theatre and to also take in the splendor of the Art Gallery of Alberta and enjoy a special tour of the new downtown Roger’s Place!

The month of December always means that time is made in our TLC schools for holiday decorating, food bank drives, winter and holiday themed arts and crafts, special snacks, shared meals, music, and spreading cheer and good will in our TLC schools. When we return in Janu-ary there is always a frenzy of work yet to be done to wrap up high school courses and prepare for school final exams followed by diploma exams which begin January 14th for 30 level students.

Jasper Elementary SchoolNovember was a busy month in our school. Our staff con-tinues to engage students in meaningful and hands-on learning opportunities.

The school held its annual Scholastic Book Fair which was a great success on November 8th and 9th. On November 10th, there was a Remembrance Day Assembly organized by the staff and students. We had several classes who performed during the assembly. Our ‘Happy Healthy Help-ers’ and student council committees also have met and are ready to begin leading activities in our school. Teach-ers also completed report cards and met with many par-ents during our parent/ teacher interviews.

Our Christmas concert preparations are in full swing. Classes are each preparing their own musical performanc-es. The concert will be held on Wednesday, December 14th and Thursday, December 15th at 7pm.
