Public notice(First published in The Iola Register, January 12, 2019)
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The owner of the Heartland Motorsports Park says he’s looking into razing the Topeka racetrack and moving to the Kansas City area because of a tax fight.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that
Chris Payne says sev-eral parcels of land are for sale and bids are being taken to remove some of the buildings. He says the current tax situation makes it nearly impossible to run a profitable busi-ness. The Shawnee
County Appraiser’s website says that Payne currently owes nearly $522,000 in back taxes. He purchased the facil-ity in 2016.
Payne says he’s of-fered to donate the prop-
erty to the city and then pay rent on it. Payne says the idea was re-jected, but Topeka city manager Brent Trout says it’s being reviewed. Trout says the situation is “concerning.”
Topeka racetrack owner threatens to relocate
Franklin County to lease hospital
OTTAWA — Franklin County commissioners cleared the way for Ran-som Memorial Hospital to join AdventHealth under a lease. The hos-pital’s board of trustees signed a letter of intent to affiliate with AHS in late August, kicking off a 120-day due diligence period. The county needed to approve en-tering into a real estate and personal property lease, and give the hos-pital board authority to lease the hospital and certain operations. The county retains title to the hospital, real and personal property. Un-der the agreement, Ad-ventHealth will infuse at least $10 million in increased capital in the next 10 years, includ-ing an upgrade to the information technology infrastructure. It also would assume the hos-pital’s liability and debt.
School snaps 6-year losing streak
CHETOPA — The Altoona-Midway boys basketball team final-ly snapped a 100-plus game, six-year losing streak Jan. 4, defeating Chetopa 37-31, The Cha-nute Tribune reported. It was the first victory for a varsity boys squad
since a sub-state win March 1, 2012. First-year coach Jeff Almond said the students were elated and felt as if the weight of the world had been lifted off their shoulders. The athletes/gentlemen waited until they were in the locker room to celebrate.
Fire departments get $21K in grants
GARNETT — Ander-son County firefight-ers received $21,000 in grants for new equip-ment from the Office of the State Fire Marshal, according to The An-derson County Review. The county’s rural fire department will get $13,120 for five sets of “turnout gear” and the City of Garnett’s de-partment will get $7,872 for three sets of gear.
Wind farm debate could head to court
ERIE — Opponents of a wind farm project in southwest Neosho County said they plan to take the matter to court, The Parsons Sun report-ed. Opponents asked county commissioners for a moratorium on the project and asked for an absent commissioner to vote on the measure, as the remaining two com-missioners appear di-vided on the issue.
Area news
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The operators of a Kansas water park where a 10-year-old boy was decapitated aren’t saying whether the at-traction will open for the upcoming season.
Schlitterbahn spokes-woman Winter Pro-sapio said Friday in an email that the Texas-based company doesn’t have an announcement “at this time” about the park where Caleb Schwab died in 2016 while riding a 17 story-slide that was billed as the world’s largest. The slide, called Ver-ruckt, never operated again and has been torn down.
Season passes for 2019 for the Kansas City, Kan-sas, park aren’t avail-able on Schlitterbahn’s website, although they have been by now in past years. Also, the compa-ny is selling passes for its four Texas locations.
“Unfortunately I have no further details about Kansas City,” Prosapio said. “Our Texas parks
open for spring break and a great deal of our focus is on preparations at our parks and resorts in Galveston, Corpus Christi, New Braunfels, and South Padre. “
The Kansas park opens later, typically on Memorial Day weekend. Several rides weren’t operating when the park opened last year after an audit found vio-lations of state amuse-ment park regulations, mostly pertaining to re-cord keeping and safety signs. Caleb’s death prompted lawmakers to strengthen the state’s regulation of amuse-ment park rides in 2017.
Prosecutors have charged several people, alleging that shoddy planning and mainte-nance led to Caleb’s death on a special day for elected officials. Ca-leb was the son of Scott Schwab, a state lawmak-er who’s been elected Kansas secretary of state. Caleb’s family re-ceived nearly $20 mil-lion in settlements.
