(AP) — The owner of the Heartland Motorsports Park says he’s looking into razing the Topeka racetrack and moving to the Kansas City area because of a tax fight. The Topeka Capital- Journal reports that Chris Payne says sev- eral parcels of land are for sale and bids are being taken to remove some of the buildings. He says the current tax situation makes it nearly impossible to run a profitable busi- ness. The Shawnee County Appraiser’s website says that Payne currently owes nearly $522,000 in back taxes. He purchased the facil- ity in 2016. Payne says he’s of- fered to donate the prop- erty to the city and then pay rent on it. Payne says the idea was re- jected, but Topeka city manager Brent Trout says it’s being reviewed. Trout says the situation is “concerning.” Topeka racetrack owner threatens to relocate Franklin County to lease hospital OTTAWA — Franklin County commissioners cleared the way for Ran- som Memorial Hospital to join AdventHealth under a lease. The hos- pital’s board of trustees signed a letter of intent to affiliate with AHS in late August, kicking off a 120-day due diligence period. The county needed to approve en- tering into a real estate and personal property lease, and give the hos- pital board authority to lease the hospital and certain operations. The county retains title to the hospital, real and personal property. Un- der the agreement, Ad- ventHealth will infuse at least $10 million in increased capital in the next 10 years, includ- ing an upgrade to the information technology infrastructure. It also would assume the hos- pital’s liability and debt. School snaps 6-year losing streak CHETOPA The Altoona-Midway boys basketball team final- ly snapped a 100-plus game, six-year losing streak Jan. 4, defeating Chetopa 37-31, The Cha- nute Tribune reported. It was the first victory for a varsity boys squad since a sub-state win March 1, 2012. Area news KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The operators of a Kansas water park where a 10-year-old boy was decapitated aren’t saying whether the at- traction will open for the upcoming season. Schlitterbahn spokes- woman Winter Pro- sapio said Friday in an email that the Texas- based company doesn’t have an announcement “at this time” about the park where Caleb Schwab died in 2016 while riding a 17 story- slide that was billed as the world’s largest. The slide, called Ver- ruckt, never operated again and has been torn down. Season passes for 2019 for the Kansas City, Kan- sas, park aren’t avail- able on Schlitterbahn’s website, although they have been by now in past years. Also, the compa- ny is selling passes for its four Texas locations. “Unfortunately I have no further details about Kansas City,” Prosapio said. “Our Texas parks open for spring break and a great deal of our focus is on preparations at our parks and resorts in Galveston, Corpus Christi, New Braunfels, and South Padre. “ The Kansas park opens later, typically on Memorial Day weekend. Several rides weren’t operating when the park opened last year after an audit found vio- lations of state amuse- ment park regulations, mostly pertaining to re- cord keeping and safety signs. Caleb’s death prompted lawmakers to strengthen the state’s regulation of amuse- ment park rides in 2017. Prosecutors have charged several people, alleging that shoddy planning and mainte- nance led to Caleb’s death on a special day for elected officials. Ca- leb was the son of Scott Schwab, a state lawmak- er who’s been elected Kansas secretary of state. Caleb’s family re- ceived nearly $20 mil- lion in settlements.     Season passes for 2019 for the Kansas City, Kan-sas, park aren’t avail-able on Schlitterbahn’s website, although they have been by now in past years. Also, the compa-ny is selling passes for its four Texas locations.

    open for spring break and a great deal of our focus is on preparations at our parks and resorts in Galveston, Corpus Christi, New Braunfels, and South Padre. “

    The Kansas park opens later, typically on Memorial Day weekend. Several rides weren’t operating when the park opened last year after an audit found vio-lations of state amuse-ment park regulations, mostly pertaining to re-cord keeping and safety signs. Caleb’s death prompted lawmakers to strengthen the state’s regulation of amuse-ment park rides in 2017.

    Prosecutors have charged several people, alleging that shoddy planning and mainte-nance led to Caleb’s death on a special day for elected officials. Ca-leb was the son of Scott Schwab, a state lawmak-er who’s been elected Kansas secretary of state. Caleb’s family re-ceived nearly $20 mil-lion in settlements.
