Summer Reading List
“Read the most useful books, and that regularly and
constantly.” –John Wesley, Circulation of Books
“But beware you be not swallowed up in books! An
ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge.” –John
Wesley, Letter to Joseph Benson, November 7, 1768
I love the two quotes above. A reminder to constantly be about
educating yourself, but a further reminder that love is more important
still.
Every year at Annual Conference I buy new books. I guess there are
worse habits. But over the past couple of months I’ve picked up several
and so I thought I’d share my “Summer Reading List” with you. (You can
ask me at the end of August if I got them all read!)
Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero. Just finished
this one last month. Excellent! Highly Recommended. It would
make for a great Sunday school study.
The Trouble with the Truth: Balancing Truth and Grace by Rob
Renfroe. Finished this one yesterday. Highly Recommended.
Seeing Black and White in a Gray World: The Need for
Theological Reasoning in the Church’s Debate over Sexuality by
Bill T. Arnold. About half-way through this one. Very well written
book on a very hot topic.
Why Salvation? By Joel B. Green. Dr. Green was one of my
mentors from Asbury Seminary. An incredible scholar from the
Panhandle of Texas.
The Advantage: Why Organizational Health Trumps Everything
Else in Business by Patrick Lencioni. Lencioni is a great writer on
teams and team health.
Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when Stakes are High by
Patterson, Grenny, McMillan, & Switzler. Ok this one we just
finished as a staff. Excellent book.
Thirteen Discourses on the Sermon on the Mount by John
Wesley. (Seedbed Publishing). A great re-packaging of Wesley’s
sermons. I look forward to getting into this one.
Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard by Chip and
Dan Heath.
Enjoy!

Youth News
“Sharing God’s Story for 125 Years”
At the Northwest Texas Annual Conference meeting every June, the Bishop awards individuals who have shown exemplary skills in the field of evangelism a special award. Our church has been blessed to have several members and
pastors win this award.
Richard Bales who was our pastor in the 1990s won this award in 1993 for representing our church and our conference when he and his wife Noreen went to the Annual Conference of Methodists in Pakistan where Richard was the
featured preacher.
After beginning his ministry as the youth director at FUMC, Curtis House was appointed pastor of the Happy UMC. While leading the Happy congregation, the church increased in membership and attendance and was recognized for the members’ ministry to their community (following a tornado in Happy) and building an outreach ministry to cowboys in
Happy.
This year, Bishop Earl Bledsoe presented Mikey Littau and the West Texas A&M Wesley Foundation with this most
prestigious award.
Bishop Bledsoe will be coming to Canyon to help us celebrate our 125th anniversary at a special worship service
on October 12, 2014.
