There is a famous “Shouting Methodist” song in Stith Mead’s Methodist songbook from 1807. It’s titled “The Meth- odist.” The World, The Devil, and Tom Paine* Have try’d their force, but all in vain. They can’t prevail, the reason is, The Lord defends the Methodist. They pray, they sing, they preach the best, And do the Devil most molest. I’m bound to march in endless bliss, And die a shouting Methodist. I pray for a revival of that spirit which filled those early Methodists. A spirit of revival. A spirit of passion for God and the human race. Unfortunately today the only time we seem to “shout” as Methodists is if we’re shouting at each other. A Note From the Pastor Shouting Methodists

In the early days of the “Methodist

Movement” we weren’t known as just

“Methodists” but often described as

“Shouting Methodists.” And it was a

badge of honor to all those who

claimed to be one. It referred to the

way that Methodists did religion. They

weren’t quiet. They weren’t sitting on

the back pew of the Sanctuary. Often

the congregation would shout out

“Amen!” or “Praise the Lord!” People

in the streets could hear these

“Shouting Methodists” as they sang

out with gusto “O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing,” or some oth-

er Wesleyan hymn. They worshipped with passion and zeal and

would shout out in praise.

to www.firstchurchcanyon.com and see it for

yourself. We also now have a Facebook page

where you can like us, leave a comment, or just

see what is happening.

Olympic Moments Sermon Series July 29th—August 19th

We love the sport, the spectacle, the athlete’s

stories, the rise of the underdog. These stories

are inspiring and uplifting, making us feel as

though we can run the race. There are stories in

the Bible that inspire us too, and in keeping with

the Olympic Season we are calling them the

Olympic Moments in the Bible. The stories of

Jacob, David and Nathan, and Paul show us the

power of God to take an underdog to an Olympic

Champion.

“In His Hands” Child Development

Center Wins Readers’ Choice Award

The Canyon News

sent out a ballot

during the month of

June asking people

to vote for their

favorites. Well the

public has spoken

and “In His Hands”

Child Development

Center was voted the Best Daycare!

Congratulations to Brenda Shepherd and her

fantastic staff for receiving this award.

On August 10th at 7pm there will be a concert in

the Sanctuary featuring Country Gospel artists

Cindy Hughlett (Tyler Looney’s mom) and Jeff

Stansberry along with Amy Assiter and special

guest Anna Grace Looney. We are excited to host

this group of talented artists, so grab a friend

and come join us. This is a free event, but there

will be a love offering taken to help cover

expenses.

I cannot express

enough thanks for all

the ways our church

came together to

give 105 kids one of

the greatest weeks

of Bible School I

have ever seen. I am

so blessed to work for you and your families.

Our mission projects for the Senior Citizens,

Snack Pak, and the Ronald McDonald House

were very successful as well. Thank you for all

your donations that made it all possible. Many

lives have been touched and God’s light is

shining very brightly right now. God is so good!

I’m am sure you are painfully aware school

will be starting before we know it. As you know,

when school starts, Wednesday night activities

are soon to follow. I am beginning to plan

activities and create calendars for our

kiddos. I would love to have you join us

on Wednesday nights. I have many

opportunities for you to work with the age

group of your choice. I look forward to

hearing from you. Be watching the

newsletter, bulletins, and your mailboxes

for Fall information.

Teaching Opportunity

Our preschool class will soon be in need

of a Sunday School Teacher. Their current

one will be leaving us to attend A&M. We

are proud of Abby Behrens, but we will

miss her greatly. If you are interested in

teaching this group, please let me know.

Upcoming Events Thank You Notes

Greetings!

Have you ever felt

inadequate or

incapable of

completing a task?

I often feel this way

in ministry...it seems like I fall short much

of the time. God calls me to do something

and yet I feel so totally and completely

inadequate. I truly believe that it is normal

to feel inadequate and in many ways even

healthy.

When God calls us to a task that we

feel incapable of accomplishing, it causes

us to rely on Him to accomplish it. I can't

even begin to imagine how David felt when

he stood before Goliath! Yet as he stood, he

had to rely on God to make him adequate

to defeat the giant. If you ever feel like you

are standing before a giant, remember that

when you trust in God you get to see His

Majesty make you adequate to accomplish

great things!!! (Philippians 4:13).

It is in our imperfections that we can

most see His perfection at work! I hope you

all have a wonderful rest of the summer!
