From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco
As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gos-pel.
-Fr. William Dotson
In the Liturgical Year, we have returned to Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time can seem like “filler” in the Church year, simply the space between the “special” seasons. But Ordinary Time is important. It reminds us that God is not just active in the special and exciting moments of our lives but also in the ordinary times. We wear green vest-ments during Ordinary Time because green is the color of growth. We don’t have to wait until Lent or Advent to grow closer to God. Each and every day we are called to grow our relationship with Him.

2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time-January 14, 2018
Lectio Divina Paso 1. Lectio Divina Paso 2.
Lectio Divina Step 1. Read: What does the text say? Fir st, the text is read. At the most basic level, one asks: What happens in this passage of the Gospel? Sometimes, it is convenient to use a biblical commentary or read the explanation of the Bible itself to better understand the context. In this pas-sage we remember that Jesus is in the synagogue of Naza-reth, and that he reads the Hebrew Scriptures. Here, at the beginning of his public ministry, the Lord reveals both his identity and his mission to the people of his city. How awesome it must have been for them to hear that "a young man from the village" comments on a reading from the prophet Isaiah, who then says: "Today the Scripture that you just heard has been fulfilled." In other words, I am the fulfillment of the writing! At first, surely people thought it was nice to listen to the reading Jesus was doing, but then they turn against Him and almost kill Him. Somehow, the Lord passes in their midst and leaves. It is not surprising, then, that this passage is called "rejection in Nazareth."
Lectio Divina Step 2. Meditate: What does God say to me in this text? At this point, one sees if there is something that God wants to make known in this passage. Almost always one can relate it to some event or experience of his life. For example, have there been situations or places in which one has felt called to speak "in the name of God", even if someone rejects it? In the Gospel passage, Jesus surely knew that his message would be controversial, but he proclaimed it all the same. Is there something in your life that asks you to adopt a very firm and even risky stance? Maybe something like this is what God wants to communicate to you.
The parish recently purchased some CD’s from the Augustine Institute and they will be available in the Narthex. Each week, we will be featuring a new CD, which we hope you will want to listen to and then pass on to others. Kindly donate $4.00 for each CD, and this can be accomplished by cash or check. If writing a check , please make it pay-able to SCB Parish.
Joseph Pearce, an accomplished writer best known for his literary biographies, tells of his own conversion from
disillusioned, hate-filled young man to committed follower of Christ.
Here he presents his early life, which included a stint in a skinhead band, white
supremacist activity, violent demonstrations, and time spent in prison, and how he
eventually embraced God’s grace and mercy. Joseph is one of the most prolific
Catholic authors of our time and now serves as senior editor for the Augustine Insti-
tute.

Franklin School Preservation Meeting Jan. 18, 7 to 8:30 pm at Borromeo Cafe
Everyone is welcome!
Please join us for the next meeting of the Franklin School Project on Thursday, Jan. 18, from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Borromeo Cafe. Our Sacred Conversa-tions on Race + Action members are working to edu-cate the community about the history of Franklin School, 716 N. 3rd Street, and to urge preservation of the school’s history when the building is sold later this year. Our Jan. 18 speaker will be Reggie Scott of the Lemay Housing Partnership.
Franklin was built in 1864 as a boys’ school for Borromeo parish, and was later purchased and ex-panded by the St. Charles School District. Franklin served black students from 1902 until 1955, decades in which Missouri law forbade black students from attend-ing white schools. In the 1960s and ‘70s, Franklin served as an integrated kindergarten center.

St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Donation Box
Parishioners will notice a new addition to our lower level parking lot off 4th Street. There is now a St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Donation Box in the queue next to the Boy Scout trailers. These boxes are for CLOTHING only and not for household items or furniture, etc. This donation box will replace the clothing items you have become accustomed to saving for our annual Mini Vinnies’ Rum-mage Sale, which will no longer be on our calendar. The clothing items you donate will be picked up weekly and brought to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store on Regency Parkway. The thrift store will pay us for the clothes we donate and these monies will be used to fund the activities of the Mini Vinnies going forward and will replace the proceeds of the rummage sale. We cannot stress enough how important it is for you to support this new fund raising activity to ensure our Mini Vin-nies can continue to be a source of inspiration to all of us as they contribute to our community through their various activities: weekly food backpacks for local school children, volunteering at the local food bank and at the soup kitchen, raising aware-ness for the plight of the homeless through the annual Freezin’ for a Reason, visiting the elderly and much more. We are planning to bring a St. Vincent de Paul truck to our parking lot each Fall for a weekend to collect the non-clothing items you may have, such as household items, furniture, kitchen items, decorations, etc. (just about everything EXCEPT clothing). So don’t despair that we will not put these items to good use as well – these donations will enable our St. Vincent de Paul Conference to earn credits at the Thrift Store so that we can provide our clients with the resources they need to make their lives a little easier. Our parishioners are more generous than we could ever adequately express and we want to thank you in advance for embracing this new approach.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry Needs your Help!
Can you knit or crochet? We could use your help. Would you consider creating a shawl for the church’s
prayer shawl ministry? It doesn’t matter if it is one shawl or many. Any of your efforts will be gladly appreciated and a blessing to others. Activities This Week/ Actividades de esta Semana
This is a bit late in coming, but not due to any ingratitude on our part. Thank you to all for your
hard work these last few months for our 89 Giving Tree client families. Another successful year
even with the "night pick up" this year and people starting at 3pm instead of 4pm causing us to
jump into action early! Great News! There is a replacement for next year, Michelle Hawkins, who
was working with her Youth group/Mini-Vinnies in the gift bag area.
Special thank you to those taking client calls, contacting and filling out client sheets, making ornaments, greeting our
parishioners at Masses to personally accept gifts and tape those tags down. Turning the thousand of gifts into an order-
ly set of bags ready for pick up, directed by Sargent Nancy and her crew. To Ron Kinnison's grandsons who drove care-
fully into the lot to help Matt transport the forty-five Academy food boxes and gifts for the 7 families they adopted,
and especially to their grandfather Ron, who has been our food coordinator for all our years. He appeared in a arm
brace coming from Lynn's eye surgery to "not miss this again this year".
Only a few hiccups handled with the kindness. It has been a pleasure working with such a wonderful giving group.
Thanks for the memories!
Mary and Matt Medina

January 14, 2018-Gospel Background
Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference
January 14, 2018 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the gospel today, Jesus asks, “What are you looking for?” Often we are looking for happi-
ness in very selfish ways, but we find that when we look for ways to make others happy, it is
then that we truly become happy. As you place your gifts in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and
to trust.
WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family car-rying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the
generosity you display when you share your treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

Please pray for all of our Luke 18 candidates who are finishing up their retreat this Sunday. Join them through prayers as they will have a Mass today (Jan 14) at 3 p.m. Pray for the Holy Spirit to come upon them and guide them as they prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Although the liturgical season of Ordinary Time begins this week, today’s reading continues with the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord, which concludes the Christmas season. Today’s reading from the Gospel according to John immediate-ly follows John the Baptist's testimony about Jesus and his iden-tification of Jesus as the Lamb of God. Having been baptized by John, Jesus begins to gather followers. The first followers sought out Jesus because of the testimony and witness of John the Bap-tist. We are familiar with the title that John the Baptist uses for Jesus—the Lamb of God. We hear it weekly at the fraction rite during Mass. For those who heard John the Baptist, howev-er, this title recalled key themes from the Old Testament. It alludes to the paschal lamb offered as a sacrifice when God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, the event that is com-memorated by the Jewish Passover celebration. The designation also recalls the prophet Isaiah’s description of the suffering serv-ant of Israel. In using this name for Jesus, John the Baptist pre-dicts Jesus’ passion and death and the new interpretation of Passover that will begin with Jesus’ Last Supper. We learn in today’s reading how Jesus’ first followers were gathered. The first two, Andrew and another man, were followers of John the Baptist. After hearing John’s testimony, they became followers of Jesus. During their time with Jesus, the details of which are not specified, Andrew and the other follower came to believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Andrew then brings his brother, Simon, to Jesus. Immediately, Jesus gave Simon a new name, calling him Peter, which means “rock” in Greek. The renaming of Simon to Peter is reported in all four of the Gospels. In the exchange between Andrew, the other disciple, and Jesus, we see an example of the usual pattern for first-century Jewish rabbinical schools. Jews sought out rabbis and established themselves as disciples of a particular rabbi. Jesus appears to have been unique in that he sought out individuals, inviting them to be his followers. In the passage that follows, John’s Gospel tells us how Jesus took the initiative in calling Philip and Nathanael. Jesus asks Andrew and the other disciple, “What are you looking for?” This is a telling question, and one that we might often ask of ourselves. John the Baptist testified to Jesus’ identity, the Lamb of God, using the framework of the Old Testament. Andrew, Simon, and the other first disciples were looking for the Messiah, whom they also came to know as the Son of God. What do we look for and what do we find in Je-sus?

Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Oremus study pro-gram teaches the essentials of an effective and fruitful prayer life. The program discusses how God speaks to us, even in the smallest encounters.
