Sigrid Danielson Ph.D., is an associate professor of art history at GVSU. Sigrid’s focus is on the arts of medieval Europe and the Mediterranean.

When thinking about Renaissance art, the names of famous individuals such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo come to mind. In this course, Dr. Danielson will shift the focus from individual artistic contributions to the exploration of broad themes between 1500 and 1700. The arts of these centuries

often reflect diverse attitudes towards nature, the individual, and social status. These themes will be examined through Renaissance paintings, sculpture, and architecture as well as prints and textiles. These works shaped the social fabric of modern day people.

Craig Benjamin Ph.D., is an associate professor of history at GVSU. He is the author of numerous articles and books on ancient Asian history and world history.

Dr. Benjamin will present a five-

part Big History course examining the past, present and future. He will begin with the origins of the universe, and then discuss the formation of stars and planets; the appearance and evolution of life on earth; the emergence of human beings; and the various types of human societies that have existed up to present day. This talk will encourage each of us to consider our place in the global world, and to think of how we might contribute to that world.

Michael McDaniel Ph.D., received his doctorate from the George Washington University. His students love digging for mathematical treasure with him.

Release your inner Problem Child for fun and intellectual profit with Michael. In this course, students will create twisted questions and then attack them with pencil, paper, calculator and cleverness. Bring your pencil, calculator (TI-83 or TI-84 preferred) and thinking cap.


Making Sense of Our Senses Monday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.2 Week Course - January 18 & 25

Dr. Daniel Bergman is an associate professor of biomedical sciences at GVSU. He was a National Institutes of Health funded researcher at the

University of Kentucky.

Our sensory systems give us great insight into our world by acquiring stimuli and allowing our brains to synthesize the information into sensations and perceptions. We know there is variability in functioning senses to the point that our perceptions of the external world can be quite different from others. In addition, differences and changes in our senses over time can be used to diagnose and/or prevent various neurological disorders. Students will perform a variety of interactive demonstrations to reveal how each of our senses differs.


Brookby and the BlodgettsMonday, 1:30-3:30 p.m.1 Week Course - January 25

Join Jeffrey Sytsma, trustee of Grand Rapids Historical Society, as he gives the history of the Blodgett Estate, officially named Brookby. Who was

Blodgett and his wife Minnie? What do we know about this magnificent mansion and the family? Jeffrey will talk on the life of the Blodgetts and the building of Brookby. Built during the Roaring Twenties, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since the 1980s, numerous photos and letters will help tell the tale.

Michael Dodge, an adjunct professor at Aquinas College, earned his MA in divinity from the University of Chicago.

This course will explore the images of Christianity’s central figure imported, employed, and reshaped by Americans throughout their history. Michael will draw from all popular media, including print, art, film drama and Stephen Prothero’s book American Jesus.

Join Ian MacNeil, for a look into cinema’s most prestigious class of filmmakers in the Academy’s history. In preparation for Hollywood’s biggest night, students will examine the best directors, actors, screenwriters, documentaries, and music from Argo and Arquette to Zanuck and Zemeckis.

David Weinandy, Ph.D., is a favored professor of communication at Aquinas College.

What can we do to live a life filled with less regrets? How

can we spend less time saying “I’m sorry” after the fact and more time proactively creating relational messages we feel and want to say? In this session, we will explore how we can make our communication more intentionally focused and more reflective of our relational goals. Rather than wishing we had acted or spoken a certain way, let’s start doing it.


Eaton’s of Canada – A New World Downton AbbeyWednesday, 1:30-3:30 p.m.1 Week Course - January 27

Bruce Kopytek writes, lectures, and maintains a blog called, “The Department Store Museum.” His books include; Jacobson’s: I Miss It So and Eatons:

The Trans Canada Store.

Hardly a visitor to Canada in the 20th Century could fail to have heard of Eaton’s Department Store. Founded in 1869, it was one of the first stores to take back merchandise: Goods Satisfactory or Money Refunded. Bruce will tell not only the history of the business, but also, talk about the family. The Eaton family lived like an across-the-pond version of Downton Abbey. He will talk of the development of the store to the fashionable hey-day in the 50’s and 60’s - to its sad and incredible demise in 1999.

this is the class for you. Jim’s music classes are filled with memorabilia, stories, and all the wonderful songs from Big Bands, Jazz, Broadway, film and radio.


The ReformationsThursday, 1:30-3:30 p.m.4 Week Course - January 7, 14, 21 & 28

Charles Gunnoe, Ph.D., is currently professor of history at Aquinas College. He studied at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary before taking a Ph.D. in

history at the University of Virginia. He is the author of Thomas Erastus and the Reformation of the Palatinate.

Why do we have so many Christian denominations in modern society? Many of these churches find their roots in the religious upheaval known as the Reformation in the 1500s. We will begin by looking at the church in the late medieval period, before turning to Martin Luther’s rebellion against ecclesiastical authority. After examining the establishment of Lutheranism in Germany, we will investigate other visions of religious reform that took root on Europe in the wake of Luther. After a short side trip to look in on the religious politics in Tudor England, the course will conclude with a survey of the Catholic Reformation.

domestic violence and children.

Julie will dive into the latest research on how technology is impacting today’s families giving the benefits and costs of social media. She will also cover the risks to marriages, children’s development, and friendships that technology use has been linked to. The course will conclude with suggestions as to what can be done to support positive interactions across the

different generations of our family members in today’s world.

Pat J. Mullen is owner of Mullen Coins LLC in Grand Rapids. Before Mullen Coins, Pat spent 32 years in television broadcasting. He served as GM of Grand

Rapids and Chicago based television stations and corporate executive roles with Tribune Broadcasting, and is currently chairman of the board of Compatico, Inc.

Pat’s talk will focus on the factors that make collector coins valuable such as, date and mint mark, condition, originality. The presentation is designed to help the novice collector avoid mistakes and provide basic knowledge for selling inherited collections. Similar to collecting antiques, basic knowledge and knowing what questions to ask will maximize value upon sale.

Martin Spence, Ph.D., is associate professor of history at Cornerstone University where he teaches World and European History. His research focuses on the history of Evangelical Christianity in modern Britain. He is well published author.

This lecture explores the current constitutional crisis in the United Kingdom that could result in the restructuring, or even the dissolution, of the United Kingdom as a unified nation-state. The crisis centers on the relationship between the four constituent parts of the UK: (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales), and has been triggered by the recent spectacular growth of the Scottish Nationalist Party. Dr. Spence will explain the historical origins of the problem; outline the current manifestations of the crisis; and review some of the possible solutions of differences among these countries.

North Korea Today: To Go or Not to Go? Friday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.1 Week Course - January 29

Dick Gauthier is vice president of international business development for Universal Forest Products.

Although the US State Department “strongly recommends against” travel to North Korea, American citizens are allowed to travel there. The restrictions placed on tourists makes for exasperating, yet surprisingly rewarding experiences. In September 2010, Dick spent 7 days inside the “Hermit Kingdom.”

He will take you north of the 38th parallel and present the current political situation, and give a firsthand glimpse into today’s North Korea.
