Dear Emeritus Students and Community,

Welcome to the Fall 2015 Semester!

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute, I would like to extend an invitation for you to enroll in our tuition-free courses for older adults throughout South Orange County. Whether this is the first time you are hearing about the program or you are a continuing Emeritus Institute student, I am confident you will find Emeritus Institute classes to be life-changing additions to your weekly routine.

Throughout the past year, we have received valuable feedback from students and our teaching-site partners. Utilizing these recommendations, we have improved our Fall 2015 Schedule of Classes, upcoming class offerings, and the registration process. We’ve made it easier to find classes close to you by adding the new Class Locations at a Glance page, which lists all

of our courses by teaching site, including our three new teaching locations. Additionally, as many students have requested, we are working on exciting new curriculum to be introduced next year in Fall 2016, including a highly requested Computer Basics class.

Finally, in response to requests for additional registration assistance, this semester we are piloting an initiative to start in-person registration at the same time online registration begins. Students must still register after their College-assigned registration appointment, and we encourage all students to register online. However, for individuals who may need additional assistance, or for those who don’t have access to computers, we have dedicated staff available to work directly with you. Please see page 2 for the updated, earlier, in-person registration information.

The Saddleback College Emeritus Institute was founded in 1976 and for nearly forty years has maintained the goal of promoting lifelong learning by providing academically rigorous, mentally stimulating, socially engaging, and physically strengthening courses for older adults in South Orange County. As we enter the Fall 2015 Semester, we are grateful for the opportunity to expand our total number of class sections (over 190), teaching sites (25), and instructors (73), in order to serve the growing number of retirees and older adults within beautiful South Orange County.

We look forward to working and learning with you as a new or continuing student in the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute this Fall 2015 Semester. Please contact our office with any questions or suggestions you may have.

Founded in 1976, the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute was established to create lifelong learning opportunities, primarily for the older adult. A dynamic and wide array of course offerings, expert instructors truly experienced in their field, and a variety of classes located in the community have made the Emeritus Institute extremely popular, and one of the fastest growing programs at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo throughout the years. As the generations of burgeoning baby boomers become senior citizens, the Emeritus Institute continues to change and offer classes that stimulate intellectual, physical, and creative expression for South Orange County residents.

There are nearly 200 class sections offered through the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute that provide lifelong learning experiences in more than 30 different disciplines. These high-quality academic classes are state-approved and available on a non-credit basis. Classes cover a wide range of interests, from accounting, art, crafts, biology, clothing and textiles, English writing and literature, gerontology, health, history, music, photography, Spanish, lipreading, and theatre. Classes are held in more than 25 off-campus sites from San Clemente to Laguna Woods, including senior centers, churches, libraries, and community centers.

An integral part of Saddleback College and its educational vision, the Emeritus Institute is a leader in providing challenging and rewarding courses designed for the older adult to accommodate the lifelong learning needs of our community members.

We invite you to be a part of the excitement of lifelong learning. Join the growing number of active adults taking part in the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute.

The Emeritus Advisory Board is made up of adult volunteers and professional representatives from community agencies serving the adult population. By becoming involved as a volunteer, you can make a difference in your life and in the educational standards of your community.

For more information on this exciting program, call the Emeritus Institute at (949) 582-4835.
