WorkshopsA. The Christian Foundation Of Science: A Medical History You

Won’t Learn In Medical School By Reverend Joe Boot Participants will be challenged to reclaim their priestly role of the

physician and consider practical ways in which they can do so in keeping with the Great Commission.

B. Sabbath Keeping – Even When You’re On Call By Dan Reilly, MD Participants will explore strategies for incorporating times of

physical, emotional and spiritual rest into the busy life of a physician or dentist who is frequently on call.

C. Countering Euthanasia In A Secular Workplace By Margaret Cottle, MD This workshop will provide basic outlines for discussing euthanasia

and assisted suicide in both Christian and secular settings. Participants will be invited to share their own expertise and experience in approaching these subjects.

D. The Critical Need For Sleep: For The Health Of Body, Mind And Soul By Joe Askin, MD This workshop will look at sleep as it relates to the physical and

mental aspects of the workshop participants and their patients. Attendees will also learn the theological signifi cance of sleep and how to optimize sleep.

E. Taking Medicine Downton To Where The Need Is By Nancy Craig, MD and Linda Der, MD Participants will examine the pro’s and con’s of inner city medicine

and will explore the similarities and differences between inner city and other family medicine. Biblical versus secular viewpoints of poverty, addiction, and related issues will also be discussed.

F. Family Sabbath In A Too-Busy World By Christin Hilbert Hardock, MD and Mr. Dan Hardock There are factors in our society we can’t modify easily which put our

families at risk. Participants in this workshop will brainstorm about ways to balance our lives and strengthen the family both within and against outside forces.

G. Choosing Better Things By John Patrick, MD This workshop will explore how we have arrived at our harassed

lifestyles and take a look at the data on the consequences of this lifestyle. Participants will then examine the function of Sabbath in each of our lives and will be encouraged to be intentional about starting and nourishing some real habits of the heart.

H. Lack Of Professionalism In Medicine: Why It’s In Short Supply And What’s Needed To Replenish It

By Ted Fenske, MD In this workshop we will review the rising concern about non-

professional behaviour seen in medical trainees and practitioners, explore defi nitions of professionalism, and outline practical solutions needed to re-establish the doctor’s higher calling.

Bios:Keynote SpeakerReverend Mark Buchanan lives on Vancouver Island with his wife Cheryl and their three children. He is a pastor and the author of several books, including “The Rest of God – Restoring your Soul by Restoring Sabbath” which is the theme of this conference.

Celebration Banquet SpeakerDr. Cathy Olson works at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and has a family practice in downtown Edmonton. She and her late husband Walter Ridgway have three wonderful daughters and 2 sons-in-law.

Workshop LeadersDr. Joe Askin practices sleep medicine in Calgary and serves as chair of the Freedom of Conscience Committee of CMDS Canada.

Reverend Joe Boot is the senior pastor of Westminster Chapel and founder of the Ezra Institute. He served with Ravi Zacharias for seven years. Joe has spoken in universities, seminaries, churches, colleges, and conferences all over the world. Joe lives in Toronto with his wife, Jenny, and their three children.

Dr. Margaret Cottle is a Palliative Care physician and a clinical instructor at UBC. She and her husband, Robin, host the UBC student chapter of CMDS each week. She serves on the boards of the Christian Advocacy Society, the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition and Focus on the Family’s Physicians Resource Council.

Dr. Nancy Craig graduated from McGill in 1986 and then worked in inner city Winnipeg for a number of years. In 2000 Nancy and her husband William Craig, a pediatric emergency physician moved to Edmonton. Nancy and William have four children.

Dr. Linda Der graduated from the University of Alberta in 1987. She started working in Hay River, NWT but eventually settled in Edmonton in an inner city clinic where she has been for the past 19 years.

Dr. Ted Fenske is a Clinical Professor with the Division of Cardiology at the University of Alberta, Staff Cardiologist at the C.K. Hui Heart Centre, and Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation for the Northern Alberta Program. Ted lives in Edmonton with this wife Tanya and three sons.

Mr. Dan Hardock teaches theology part-time at Rocky Mountain College, Calgary. Dan was the fi rst associate staff worker for CMDS Canada and later became the coordinator for associate staff. He holds a Masters of Christian Studies from Regent College.

Dr. Christin Hilbert Hardock had her own family practice in Calgary until she married Dan. Now she shares the home-front duties with Dan and works part time at an inner city clinic (CUPS) and on the Tsuu T’ina reserve.

Dr. John Patrick retired from the University of Ottawa in 2002. He now lectures throughout the world and is the president of Augustine College. He is married to Sally, and resides part time in Ottawa, and part time on the farm.

Dr. Dan Reilly practices and teaches ob/gyn in small town Ontario and teaches ethics at McMaster University. Dan is the Past-President of the CMDS National Board, and provides leadership for the Student Leadership Conference and the Eastern Student Retreat.
