Chairman’s Report – Mr Neil Maxwell

CHAIRMAN REPORT

Another successful year for the Club. It is great to see the Club continue to grow off the field as well as perform

very well on it.

The last three seasons have seen consistency and strong improvements both culturally and from a cricket

perspective. I am delighted in the growth of our women’s component as well as our ability to produce

representative players.

That said, we must continue to raise the bar and set new challenges this season. We must challenge the way we

have done things as this will take us out of any comfort zones we may have developed. I know Michael Haire and

the coaching staff are acutely aware of this and have already started the process for next season.

The strength of any club is predicated on the quality of its leadership. In Gizelle Plummer, Kylie Hocknell, Dan

Smith, Daniel Jacob, Craig Di Blasio, Dominic Tonkin, Nathan Breen and Samad Shaikh we are truly blessed.

Director of Cricket, Michael Haire is a core part of the leadership group., he sets an expectation that our captains

and players continue to rise to.

I would like to recognize Jamie Barkley, Chief Executive, Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust. The Trust’s

support over recent years has been the backbone to our success both on and off the field. The Board has been

hugely supportive throughout the year in review. The contribution of all Board members is much appreciated.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers and parents who have contributed enormously to the operations of our

Club and who form the heart and soul of delivering a world-class cricket club. We would be lost without you all

and it clearly emphasizes the reliance a Club of this size has on its volunteer base. Our scorers, match and team

managers, committee members and parents who assist with transport and catering all provide our Club with so

much support.

Special mention and congratulations must also go to our:

• Australian Representatives: Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, Rachael Haynes and Hugh Sherriff

• New Zealand Representatives: Heyley Jensen

• Sri Lanka representatives: Nilakshi De Silva and Sripali Weerakody

• First Class: Rachael Haynes, Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, Angela Reakes, Nicole Goodwin, Maitlin Brown, Nicola Hancock

• Futures League players Ben Manenti and Nic Bills

• Our numerous pathway representatives

Our General Manager Greg Healy finished up after two seasons. Greg undertook enormous challenges with

relatively short notice following David Kelly’s acceptance of a role with the NRL. In his time in the role Greg has

developed a strategic plan and changed the administrative structure of a club that has developed significantly in

its roles and responsibilities over the last ten years. Greg’s influence in this area has allowed us to implement a

structure that will allow us to meet the challenges of growth as we aspire to be one of the leading cricket clubs in

the world. Importantly, Greg will continue his involvement in the Club by leading the development of our ‘world

famous’ women’s club. Thanks Greg from all the Tigers!

Greg’s move opened the door for Nick Govers to step into the General Managers role. Nick is ideally suited for

this position given his strong connection to the Club through his playing history as well as the experience he has

gained through previous roles with Cricket NSW and the Football Federation Australia. Congratulations on a good

start Nick!

I reiterate my closing comments of last year - with success comes new challenges. The Board and Coaching Staff

have already started to look at how we can improve on this year. We are looking at the learning’s and addressing

some of the short comings. Again, please take a moment (just a moment!) to enjoy the vast improvement and

success of recent years.

Here we go again!

General Manager Report – Mr Nick Govers

Following fantastic success throughout the 2017/18 season all streams within SCG Cricket remain strong and are

situated to further develop and grow moving forward.

The club has the appropriate structure and the right people in these positions to take it to next level on and off the

field. Special mention is required to the Board Members of the club who continue to strive to make SCG Cricket a

world renowned and respected entity. The strength of the Board lies with the experience across all facets of

business that helps drive the strategy and goals of SCG Cricket. The passion and enthusiasm that the Board

direct to the development of the club is second to none and is to be commended.

I would also like to acknowledge the work behind the scenes of the SCG Cricket Chairman, Neil Maxwell. This

club is always front of mind for Neil and his dedication needs to be recognised, the time he devotes and the

passion he shows is the driving force behind the development of SCG Cricket. The whole entity of SCG Cricket is

the brainchild of Neil and the current standing and strength of the club is credit to him.

I would particularly like to thank Greg Healy for his time as General Manager at the Club. Most may know that

Greg has served as Chairman, Director, General Manager, Women’s Chair, Head Coach, Brewers Coach and

any other position he has felt necessary. Greg has continually committed hours and hours into the club, whether

that be chairing meetings or running wicket-keeping drills, Greg’s contributions are unparalleled. I would like to

personally thank Greg for his assistance with the handover, making himself available at any time to help.

Coming from a player’s perspective of the club you have a knowledge of everything that goes into a humble

cricket club located in the Inner West of Sydney whilst not really understanding both the overall direction of the

club and the fine details that are required of SCG Cricket. This was certainly the case for me moving from a

player to Director to General Manager all in the space of 6 months. I want again to thank the patience and

assistance Neil Maxwell and Greg Healy have provided me moving into this role.

It is no secret that the success of the club on the field lies with our coaching structure, I wanted to personally

thank all the coaches involved in our programs. Mention needs to go to our Director of Cricket, Michael Haire.

Michael has shown that his passion for this club is not only based on the performances on the field but the

development of our players off the field. I think this is an extremely important characteristic for a leader who has

such influence on the members of this club.

It goes without saying that the achievements of the club are only possible through the full support of the

volunteers. I would like to thank our scorers, team managers, match officials, tea and lunch chefs and members

of our respective committees for your continual support. Everyone is aware of the hectic season schedule with

Premier Cricket, SCG XI domestic and international matches and first class and elite content all would not be

possible. A sincere thank you to all that have been involved throughout the season.

Drummoyne Oval has and is continually being recognised as a premier cricket facility within NSW. Credit needs

to be given to Matt Somerville and Nick Cutler as well as the team from Green Options for the continual

maintenance and upkeep of the oval. The ground is continually used for First Class fixtures and trainings, this

would not be possible without a phenomenal ground staff supporting the club. I would like to extend my thanks to

Canada Bay Council for their continued support of Drummoyne Oval and the ambitions of the club.

This vote of thanks is echoed to both Inner West Council and Ryde Council for the match day facilities at

Birchgrove Oval and Ryde Oval, respectively. All Sydney Cricket Club grounds were rated highly at the end of the

season and it is credit to the ground staff involved.

There were many achievements within the playing streams of SCG Cricket, however, none more pertinent than

winning the men’s Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground. This was a fantastic achievement

by the club and something to be extremely proud of.

SYDNEY CRICKET CLUB INCORPORATED

FINANCIAL AND ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18

Page 21

I would also like to recognise and congratulate all the players in our programs that represented higher honours

throughout the 2017/18 season. The club’s major role is to provide an environment for players to be able to reach

their potential and this includes pushing players to play cricket for the next level. There have been several players

who have been able to achieve this, congratulations and we wish you all the best when playing at next level.

The SCG XI is continuing to grow and develop, a key focus for the SCG XI is to improve the playing strength

throughout the members. Highlights this season include hosting the Spirit of Cricket Global Challenge, this

involved several international social cricket clubs playing in a competition entirely hosted within Sydney. It was a

fantastic event which involved attending the Sydney Ashes Test and Sixers BBL fixtures which were true

highlights. With the SCG XI hosting this event, it assisted in recognising the SCG XI as an international social

cricket club alongside the likes of Marylebone Cricket Club, Cricket Club of India, Hong Kong Cricket Club and

Singapore Cricket Club.

All this is not possible without our valued sponsors and business partners. The support of the SCG Trust and staff

is greatly appreciated, the club could not function without to the level it has without this ongoing backing. Further

recognition must be made to our other sponsors, thank you for your assistance throughout the season and we

look forward to working together continually develop a fruitful relationship.

It seems like cricket seasons all merge into one with planning commencing for season 18/19 already underway.

The club is in a fantastic position to reach new heights in the future and present opportunities and challenges to

particularly our players. Have an enjoyable off-season, and I look learning more about the club as we approach

another summer of cricket.

Director of Cricket Report

It is with great pleasure that I present my season 2017/18 report.

Firstly, can I begin by congratulating all within our Club for the achievements we attained in 2017/18. To be able

to maintain the standards of our previous two (2) seasons is testament to the quality of players, administrators,

coaches, supporters and volunteers who comprise Sydney Cricket Club.

Let’s reflect on season 2017/18:

First Grade winners Kingsgrove Sports Twenty/20, Semi finalists in 50 over and 2-day cricket competitions;

Second Grade Quarter finalists; 3rd Grade runners up; 4th Grade Quarter finalists; 5th Grade a huge improvement

in their team performance albeit with a young and continually changing X1;Poidevin Gray Semi-finalists and

Green Shield Quarter finalists.

These results reflect the continuation of the hard work that the playing group committed to throughout the season

commencing with our preseason program conducted by Dave Williams in conjunction with several indoor net

sessions at the SCG.

Our season, once again, was predicated on one Tiger key element… HARD WORK…which was reinforced at

every training session and a preparedness from the players to embrace the challenge. Every player should be

proud of what we have achieved and be congratulated for the work ethic displayed.

Our results weren’t achieved by one individual…they are the result of a wonderful team.

Firstly, thank you to the Board of our Club. Led by Chairman, Neil Maxwell, the support you continue to provide

players and support staff is invaluable to ensure all operational facilities required to play cricket at our best is

delivered. The structure we have is the envy of all Premier Grade Clubs and makes the process of playing so

much easier. To both Greg Healy and Nick Govers, thanks you for your support.

Thank you to all our support staff: Michael Procajlo, Dan Smith, Ash Squire, Matt Ryan and Dave Williams.

A special thank you to our Captains: Dan Smith, Daniel Jacob, Dom Tomkin, Craig Di Blasio, Nathan Breen,

Samad Shaikh, Ben Manenti and Hugh Sherriff.

To our Educators, led brilliantly by our Club Captain Tom Ortiz: Beau Mclintock, Stephen King, Cameron Holmes,

Ollie Meroni and Damien Rapisarda…your support and leadership was a key plank to our success.

To Alan Mantle, our resident Mind Whisperer. The work you do within our group does not go unnoticed… simply

outstanding.

To Chris Evans our Physiotherapist who made himself available to the playing group at our training sessions …a

big thank you.

Lastly, but most importantly…thank you to all our volunteers who acted as scorers, afternoon tea providers, drink

mixers and for just being there on the weekends ready to help where needed…we would not be able to survive

without your support.

One question to ponder on Tigers prior to getting back together in July... Can we continue to improve?

We need to ensure that we don’t become comfortable and complacent.

We need to ensure we focus on our ATTITUDE.

So, 2018/19 means more HARD WORK Tigers.

SCG XI Report

The SCG XI had another fantastic season in the establishment phase of the cricket club. The club debuted numerous

new members who donned the whites and increased the non-playing membership group through unique events only

available to SCG XI Members.

There were a mixture of marquee matches throughout the season playing against both local and touring sides. The

season opened with the annual fixture against I Zingari Australia at Coogee Oval and was completed with the Family

Day Sleep Out at Camden Oval. It is a fantastic way to open and close the season against the formidable I Zingari

Australia, the battles will continue for many years to come.

The season was highlighted by the Spirit of Cricket Tournament in January which emphasised the world-renowned

recognition of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust and the SCG XI. International cricket clubs Marylebone Cricket

Club, Singapore Cricket Club, Hong Kong Cricket Club, Cricket Club of India and I Zingari Australia participated in

the tournament recognising the spirit in which the game of cricket should be played.

The tournament commenced with an opening ceremony at Day 4 of the Ashes at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where

the clubs were able to network and enjoy some refreshments prior to the matches beginning. The intensive tournament

included four matches for each side within 5 days as well as attending the BBL in the Trust Suite, Spirit of Cricket

Gala Dinner and the highlight, playing a match on the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best tournament for the SCG XI performance wise returning win-less following the

tournament:

The matches on the SCG capped off a fantastic tournament, it was particularly special that the Cricket Club of India

announced their intention to host the next tournament in 3 years.

Overall the SCG XI had a wonderful year filled with many highlights, with an Ashes series in England around the

corner it is an extremely exciting time to be involved in Cricket. Thank to the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust for the

continual support in providing many unforgettable experiences.

He was an excellent wicketkeeper batsman who made his First Grade debut in the 1940/41 season, just prior to joining the 2nd/4th Australian Army Regiment with which he served in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands reaching the rank of Lieutenant. After rejoining Balmain in 1945, Fred continued his First and later Second Grade career with considerable success, culminating in his leading our Second Grade side to the premiership in 1953/54. For the next 27 years, Fred did a remarkable job looking after the Club as its major custodian. In 1976 he took over the Presidency from Cliff Winning and held this position until his passing. His administrative skills were very widely recognised and led to his appointment to the NSWCA where he served in many capacities including Chairman for nine years from 1954/55. Fred served on the Australian Cricket Board from 1967 to 1988 and was its Chairman from 1983-1987. He managed several Australian Touring sides in the period from 1969 to 1981 and was recognised by all as a great bloke and great administrator. Fred was honoured with three Life Memberships, Balmain District Cricket Club in 1956, the New South Wales Cricket Association in 1959 and the MCC in 1980. To complement these honours, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1980 for services to sport. The Committee, in commissioning this trophy, acted as it believed Fred would have wished in presenting it for the Outstanding First Grade Player. It was decided that the Committee would award this trophy on the basis of assessment in the following categories: Playing Performance, Citizenship, Conduct, Training Attendance and General Contribution to the Club.

• The winner for 2017/18 – Nic Bills

CLIFF WINNING TROPHY – 2ND GRADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR – MEN’S

This trophy was named in honour of Cliff Winning who was a loyal servant of the Club from 1927. Cliff was a true gentleman who supported the Club in good times and in not so good times.

• The winner for 2017/18 – Suffan Hassan

Jim Reynolds Trophy – 2nd Grade Player of the Year – Women’s Jim Reynolds was a long serving Vice President for our Club wherever and whenever they played. This continued for many years and always had a passion for Cricket at all levels.

• The winner for 2017/18– Kylie Hocknell

H.V. Todd Tanner Memorial Trophy – 3rd Grade Player of the Year – Men’s HV “Todd” Tanner was a contemporary and very dear friend of W.C. Bull who was Honorary Secretary from 1910-1939 and President from 1939-1956. Todd Tanner joined our Club in 1920, was elected to the Management Committee in 1921 and, on numerous occasions, acted as its Chairman. His service to the Club in this capacity continued until his death in 1956 without his missing a Committee meeting. Todd Tanner was a delegate to the NSWCA and other cricket bodies on behalf of the Club for many years and was elected a Life Member in 1935. His greatest cricketing achievement was the taking of all 10 wickets for 32 runs in a City and Suburban Match in 1920, closely followed by 145 runs (still a record), during which he clouted many sixes into Snail’s Bay at Birchgrove. He was one of the most ardent supporters of Poidevin-Gray and AW Green Shield Cricket.

• The winner for 2017/18 – Craig Di Blasio The W.C. Bull Memorial Trophy – 4th Grade Player of the Year – Men’s This trophy was presented for annual competition by Mr John Bull to perpetuate the memory of the grand service given to our Club by his father, W.C. Bull, as a player (including First Grade) and outstanding administrator at all levels of the game. Mr Bull joined the Tigers in 1901, was elected to the Management Committee in 1904 and was appointed Honorary Secretary of the Club in 1909, a post he held until 1939. He was made a Life Member of the Club in 1922 and succeeded his father as President in 1939, a position he held until his death in 1957. Mr Bull was a delegate to the NSWCA for 46 years and a member of the Executive Committee for 36 years. He was elected a Life Member of the NSWCA in 1937. Mr Bull managed an Australian side to New Zealand in 1928 and was Treasurer of the 1934 Ashes team to England. Remarkable Service indeed!!

• The winner for 2017/18 – Alex Rashleigh

The Colin Thomlinson Memorial Trophy – 5TH Grade Player of the Year – Men’s

This trophy was donated by the family of the late Colin Thomlinson in honour of his memory and service to our Club. Colin played in an era when First Grade cricket was of a very high standard, but was deprived of competing permanently at that level because of the controversial nature of his excellent fastish off-break delivery but by no means was this a unanimous opinion. Nevertheless, Colin accepted these reversals like the great sportsman he was and continued to give the Club yeoman service on and off the field right up to the time of his untimely passing. It was determined that this trophy should be awarded to the best Fifth Grade player.

Athol Aria Memorial Trophy – Poidevin Gray Shield Player of the Year Presented to the Club in honour of a Senior Vice President, Athol Aria who served the Club splendidly in numerous auxiliary, “behind the scenes” capacities. He knew Drummoyne Oval like “the back of his hand” … one of his pet phrases, because he was also closely associated with the Drummoyne Rugby Club during the Winter. His valuable service dates back to the days when it was customary to charge admission for First Grade matches and Athol was invariably on deck to collect the money. Certainly, one of our Club’s staunchest loyalists.

• The winner for 2017/18 – Harry Manenti Greg Hayne Player of the Year – Tigers Leading Runscorer This award is presented to honour one of our greatest ever Tigers Greg Hayne. Greg leads our Club in centuries scored and leading runs with over 12,000 during his illustrious career.

• The winner for 2017/18 – Matthew Rodgers – 883 runs Andrew Jones Trophy – Green Shield Player of the Year This trophy is donated annually by the late Ron Jones, Vice President and father of our former champion First Grade bowler, Andrew, to recognise a vital feature of our Club. From 2004/05, it was decided, that this trophy is to be presented to the Most Valuable Player in the AW Green Shield team.

• The winner for 2017/18 – Hugh Sherriff

Nerida Walker Award - Player of the Year in Brewer Shield This trophy was first awarded in the 2002/03 Season in recognition of the commitment made by Nerida Walker in establishing the Club’s Brewer Shield side during the mid 1990’s. • The winner for 20117/18 – Samira Dimeglio

Ed McCardell Memorial Trophy – Club Person of the Year – Mens This trophy was donated by the Club Management to perpetuate the memory of another of our Club’s “behind the scenes” indispensable workers, particularly at the First Grade level. He was closely associated with the late President, F.W. Bennett OBE, in many of the latter’s sporting goods enterprises and used a variety of his talents, including First Grade team manager, to ensure as high a degree of off field efficiency as possible. His all round efficiency was also recognised by the NSWCA which appointed him manager of a number of minor representative teams. The trophy is awarded annually for consistent displays of unsolicited service, citizenship and service beyond the call of duty or obligation.

Colahan/Mitchell Trophy – Best Club Person – Women’s Named after Ann Mitchell OAM and Carlene Colahan who were driving forces behind the women’s teams, this trophy is presented annually to the representative of the women’s teams who has contributed most off field to the smooth running of these teams.

• The winner for 2017/18 – Deborah Smith

Bill Donaldson Memorial Trophy – Best Trainer in the Club The family of the late Bill Donaldson donated this trophy during the 1999/00 season. Bill Donaldson was one of our greatest and longest serving players, playing with the Club from 1937 to 1961. Bill was a prolific run-scorer with two double centuries and 11 centuries to his name. He made the highest individual score ever in 1st Grade with 246 not out in 1947/48 and has the highest average in 1st Grade with 135.16 also in 1947/48. Bill also scored two centuries for NSW, both coincidentally against Western Australia. From 2004/05, it was decided that this trophy be presented to the Most Conscientious Trainer. The winner is the player who attends practice regularly and puts in at all times.

• The winner for 2017/18 – Nic Bills Brian Lulham Volunteer of the Year Award – Best Volunteer for the Entire Season This award is to recognise the importance of volunteers in our Club and as a way for our players to show their appreciation.

• The winner for 2017/18 - Gary King Peter is an outstanding contributor to the Tigers. The registrar, a delegate to the SCA on behalf of the club, responsible for the MyCricket Submissions and Stats and has scored all matches for 4th grade this season. An outstanding club person makes the registration process so much easier and he is a really good debt collector as well.

Major Individual Awards Club Awards The Archie Jackson Memorial Trophy – Player of the Year – Men’s

The 1932/33 Committee of the Balmain District Cricket Club decided to ensure that the name of a great Balmain, New South Wales and Australian cricketer should forever be perpetuated in our Club history by arranging for, and providing to the Club, a magnificent Shield to be presented annually to the mens player of the year. Archie Jackson was Balmain’s youngest Interstate and International Representative, who succumbed to Tuberculosis at only 23 years of age in February, 1933. In 1926/27, after showing tremendous promise as a schoolboy, he amassed, at the tender age of 17, a First Grade aggregate of 870 runs in only 12 innings (2 not outs), including five centuries at an average of 87.00. He was chosen the same season to play for NSW for whom he scored two centuries and three fifties. Test Match representation came in February 1929 in Adelaide (Fourth Test) when he recorded a top score of 162 on debut v England – an innings which brought him cricketing immortality. Archie played for Balmain from 1924 to 1932 scoring 11 centuries, represented NSW on 23 occasions scoring 1858 runs at an average of 54.64 and played in eight Tests, scoring 474 runs at 47.40.Another year of great teamwork but some special individual performances with a number of players in the mix for the Archie Jackson Memorial Trophy for the Player of the Year - Mens. The special all round talent of Ben Manneti, including higher honours with the Comets in the Futures League with 562 runs and 43 wickets make Ben a strong contender. Acting captain, Harry Dalton with 582 runs, Futures League honours featured strongly again and Joe Denly with 723 runs including a double hundred and a further century. Then there is Nic Bills with 49 wickets opening the bowling – 5 times 5 wickets and 11 wickets in a match. Selection in the SCA Premier Team

• The winner for 2017/18 – Ben Manenti Kerry Marshall Award – 1st Grade Player of the Year – Women’s First awarded in 1999/00 this award was renamed in the 2002/03 the Kerry Marshall Award. LES MORGAN

Sadly Les Morgan passed away in June 2018 not long after he reached his 100th birthday A Balmaniac at heart, Les captained Balmain Cricket Club first grade for nine seasons from 1943/44 to 1951/52. During his time at Balmain, Les had the privelige of playing with and against many greats of the game. The Concord native lined up against cricket luminaries Bill O’Reilly, Richie Benaud, Stan McCabe, Sid Barnes, Keith Miller, Arthur Morris, Alan Davidson and Ray Lindwall on the Sydney first grade cricket scene.

In a distinguished first grade career with the Tigers, Morgan bagged over 200 first grade wickets and compiled

nearly 3000 runs, proving himself to be an oustanding all rounder who contributed very well to the team.

Morgan is believed to be the oldest surviving first grade cricketer to have played in the elite men’s historic Sydney

grade competition. Sadly, Les passed away in Concord Hospital on June 21, 2018 after battling illness.

Many thanks for your great contribution to the Balmain Club Vale Les Morgan

Belvidere Cup: Semi Finalists- 3rd Limited Overs Cup: Quarter Finalists- 5th Kingsgrove T20 Cup: Premiers- 1st Starting the year if you told me that this squad of players would contest in the finals of all three competitions and lift one trophy I would of said that would be a tremendous effort and would of certainly taken it. That being said after the lofty heights of the Kingsgrove T20 Premiership in December and the brand of cricket we played on the finals day I think a fair assumption would be that we didn’t quite get back to that stage for the rest of the season. We showed glimpses of what we were capable of but we were certainly short of the standards we set ourselves and because of this we let ourselves down. To win competitions takes a hell of a lot of luck, hard work and discipline something we lacked at times at training and in games. There were glimpses of individual brilliance and glimpses of the belief that we have to win from near impossible positions but this strength I believe also became our weakness. We got comfortable and just thought we would win from any position, our work ethic dropped and our ability to grind away get on top and keep the foot on the throat was just a little off the mark. Harsh? Looking at the results on the table you would suggest ‘Yes’ but I firmly believe that we had the squad of players to win all three competitions this year. I know it may sound funny but looking at the table across all three competition there are other Premier Clubs that would be happy with that, but we are not other clubs, we expect more we want more and for us to achieve more each player in the squad needs to offer more, towards their own game and towards the team. That euphoric feeling of winning the T20 competition is why we all play sport and it doesn’t just happen overnight. Someone said to me recently when discussing this season and I quote his words: “you guys are always up there always close but to do something you as a squad have never done before you are going to have to do something you have never done before” So I thought about that comment long and hard and come up with the following:

• We need to be more accountable as individuals and as teammates

• We need to train harder

• We need to learn to push our teammates

• We need to respect the opposition but hate them enough that winning is the only option

• We need to be more selfless

• We need to lead by example not talk about it

• We need to love turning up and playing with our teammates

• We need to remove the excuses and find answers Read that and yes, I agree it is just cliché after cliché, similar to a man of the match NRL forward interview but in reality, clichés are often very simple very obvious but usually the things we miss. We have the talent we have the skill and ability now we just need to want more, and this will be discussed more as we embark on season 2018/19 and beyond. Players: Matthew Rodgers A brilliant summer for Dodge, is starting to make a habit of making big match winning 100’s but more importantly backed up his big innings with more consistent performances. Learning more about his game and trusting it each year. Can reach the next level if he believes.

Justin Mosca A breakthrough 100 early in the season Vs eventual minor premiers and looked set for a big year, unfortunately showed glimpses of his quality but didn’t turn starts into big runs, a brilliant team man and someone that needs to relax and enjoy the ride. Harry Dalton A consistent year, but from Dalts’ expectations a little disappointing. A number of times got in and threatened to go large but got out when the game was there for the taking. Would love to see Harry learn from Manenti and Bills and train like a professional, this would come out in spades in his game! AJ Mosca AJ will be disappointed with his season. Underdelivered as a player with his talent and ability. Scored a brilliant 100 against Fairfield but threw away too many starts. Aj’s challenge is to get fit and show everyone what he is capable of. Loves a scrap and talks about proving the doubters wrong all the time. Aj, I’m doubting you, I dare you to prove me wrong. Beau McClintock Another brilliant year with the gloves, was near faultless all season and is one of the best in the business. His short form batting was brilliant and would love for him to translate that into the longer forms. Like all good keepers goes unnoticed. A fantastic cricket brain and if we could get him away from his sewing circle he could offer our fielding group a lot in coaching and drills. Ben Manenti 50 plus wickets and 500 plus runs for the season. A stellar year from Ben. Less performances have been rewarded with shield debuts, his time will come. A brilliant professional trainer and leads by example all the time. Keep knocking…….. Ryan Felsch Known to the Premier competition as ‘Wags’. A fantastic contribution to the side this year. After many a season in and out and struggling to find a full time role in the team, Wags took on the intimidator with the ball sticking to his mantra of not bowling in the batsman’s half until he hits them in the head. Stats don’t show the impact Wags had often wickets falling at the other end. Some valuable contributions with the bat also. Looking forward to Wags taking his game next level 2018/19 season. Nic Bills Another brilliant year from Blinky, the most consistent trainer and person in our club. Ultimate professional. Attention to detail at training recovery and planning is a reason why he gets rewards each week. Was a revelation with the bat this year with some brilliant match winning knocks, a genuine all rounder in the making!!! If any young player needed a role model this man is the man. A great leader who leads by action not necessarily words. Alex Glendenning Unfortunatly glendo missed a big stint of cricket through injury this season. Took some valuable wickets when he was on the park. A big off season combined with the challenge to take himself mentally where he hasn’t been before at training will see Alex become the best player he can. Ability to swing the new ball and bowl brilliant reverse swing is a fantastic skill set, that coupled with aggression, a big ticker and engine will see Alex be a force in the coming years. Tom Ortiz Unfortunately another year plagued by injuries prevented us from seeing Tic at his best. A brilliant team man although the rarest individual one will ever meet! Tic will be a big loss to our change room but wish him all the best with his new club but more importantly look forward to seeing him back as a tiger to finish his career or after he finishes playing. Matt Pasternatsky Matt Patt showed everyone he is a capable of becoming a fantastic first grade player, a brilliant knock against Hawkesbusy early in the season and a match winning knock in the T20 ¼ showed his class and skill. Continued improvement and understanding of his own game will see Matty score a lot more consistent big runs in first grade. Suffan Hussan

Joined us this season and was challenged to bang the door down and demand selection, he delivered 4 centuries in 2nd grade and did exactly that. Showed he is a more than capable with a brilliant 70 odd against his old club in his second game in 1s for the tigers. Has all the shots in the book and a big off season will see him hit the ground running. Tristen McDonald Made his way into first grade on the back of career best form in 2s. Was like watching the Rooster glory days with some fantastic 50 plus scores but will be disappointed he didn’t convert some of them into match winning 100s. Hopefully can get his shoulder sorted because he should expect a truck load more runs as a tiger. Harry Manenti Harry made his debut this year in T20 and in one day cricket. Showed his skill with the ball and with the bat in his limited opportunities due to school commitments. With his school cricket now complete I look forward to seeing Harry develop his skills and win many matches for the tigers with the bat and ball. Nathan Sowter Only played a few games due to his commitments over in England with Middlesex but he showed how good a cricketer he has become. Dominant with bat and ball in almost every game. Its pleasing to see the development Nathan has made since joining the tigers and look forward to seeing many more first class games and hopefully beyond. As always we look forward to having you back whenever you are available! Also like to thank everyone else that played and made valuable contributions through the year. Michael Haire Your work behind the scenes is relentless, your dedication to the cause is second to none. Semi retired also known as 24/7 dedication to working full time for Sydney Cricket Club to make us a better club and better people. I thank you personally for everything you have done and will continue to do for us as people. Brian Lulham Again the best in the business, you don’t get a trophy names after you unless you’re a legend and Brian is certainly that. To put us with us week in week out and do what you do for us we owe you a lot. Thanks as always. Ian Wright Thanks for scoring the games you were available for throughout the year. Look forward to having you back next year behind the desk. Just don’t hide Brians keys again and sit there with a smile of your face while we spend 4 hours searching for them! Mick Procaljo and the rest of the support staff Every team in every format across all grades, Pg’s and Green Shield playing finals cricket bar one. You should be very proud of what you have helped achieve. The hours of work, dedication and love that goes into this is astronomical. A little more ownership and accountability by each players will turn finals appearances into trophies in the cabinets. You can lead a horse………………. To our volunteers, parents, wives, girlfriends, grandparents, brothers, sisters and kids on behalf of the team I thank you for your unwavering support. You ride every wicket cheer every run and love us win lose or draw. Our club is better because of your support throughout the year but more importantly we are better as people thanks to everything you do for us. Neil Maxwell and our Board I think you for everything you have done for us this year and beyond, because of your efforts we are the Premier Club in Sydney Premier Competition, No Bias. Recently retired Greg Healy from GM I thank you for everything you have done for our club across Men’s and Women’s and also the development you have helped me with personally throughout your time as GM. Matt Sommerville and Green Options, you guys are the best in the business, when JLT games are high scoring and first class and international cricketers are saying it’s the best ground in Sydney and one of the best suburban grounds in the world you know your doing something right, thanks and well done to you and your team. Nick Govers for stepping in at GM mid-season and making the transition smooth you have been a pleasure to deal with and the club has run and will continue to run smoothly under you.

The role you play in keeping sports we love as a nation strong is second to none, no matter how big or small. Thank you. Womens Report

Coach’s Report 2017/18

The 2017/18 season continued the club’s long-term plan to return to be the leading women’s club in Sydney. Sydney Women’s Cricket Club has previously been a force in women’s cricket, leading in the production of international cricketers & role model for other clubs. However, the club has suffered due to its own success & the changing nature of grade (premier) cricket. With our representative players available less often, & the development of other clubs, rebuilding the culture & structure has become imperative.

This season was my first as coach of the club. In that capacity it has been encouraging to see so many passionate, committed people willing to contribute to the club’s regeneration. It is their continued vision, enthusiasm & commitment, particularly without seeing the immediate fruits of their labour in the way of successes on the field, that demonstrate this club has the ability to again be a power-house of cricket in Sydney.

Key Objectives for 2017/18

In accordance with the club’s direction & my experiences from the past I saw the best benefit for you was to support the following. The focus was built on getting the processes right first to allow the results to show.

o Foster & enhance the “Club first, team second, individual third” culture o Create a more disciplined approach to preparation & performance o Make cricket more enjoyable, rewarding & successful for existing players o Develop the junior talent within the club

- Culture My initial experiences were very disheartening & noted a huge room for improvement. Our general approach was of “me first, team 2nd, club 3rd”. Some examples included: not taking responsibility for own actions & performance; blaming others; settling for mediocrity; avoiding contributing to things such as setting out/collecting markers & helping with covers. This wasn’t from everyone but it needed to change. However, through some great leadership from captains & many players there has been a marked change. There has been a huge shift towards contributing to the club & team & taking responsibility for your own cricket. The little things, such as dismissed batters coming out & cheering for their team mates & running drinks, or doing the covers without being asked, or players finishing early going to support another Tigers team still playing, are starting to become the norm.

- Preparation I originally took on the coaching with much trepidation, seeing the lack of commitment to training & match preparation. Previously, I could almost count training attendees on my left hand (which is also short changed!) & intensity was lacking. But, oh what a transformation! Training attendance & intensity improved dramatically, with not only good numbers but players actually competing in the nets. And one of the highlights for me was the whole playing group taking responsibility for their own preparation at training by warming up together without being prompted. That is a great step forward. Preparation is more than just training. Training has improved (but can improve even more) but two other aspects of preparation need to be addressed: Pre-season & match days. Early season performance can only be maximised by strong preparation in pre-season. In 2017/18 it was almost an after-thought as few were able to attend. We are currently working on a program to help you be better prepared for the early rounds & the full season ahead. We strongly encourage you to participate as much as your activities allow. Match days also need to improve. Maximise your availability. Get there early. Contribute to team duties. Then get into the warm up on time. It’s amazing how much the 1% factors can improve your game. Preparation, whether at training, before games, your fitness or even in getting ready at home, will have an enormous influence on your performance.

- Enjoyment & Rewarding cricket Cricket at this level should be challenging but should also be fun. Hopefully we were able to do both this year. It was apparent that we have a fantastic group of players all wanting to do well for the team but also afraid of letting their team mates down. We want to encourage you to try things at training. As long as you have a purpose for what you are doing we will always encourage & support you to try to go to a new level. So expect to be challenged to out-think & out-perform each other in a fun environment at training. This already started to translate to performances.

- Development of Junior Talent

In general, we are a very young club, meaning our future is in providing opportunities for our younger players to learn, improve & excel. Hence, we sought to provide players with opportunities to develop their game at a higher level with the support of experienced players. The T20 competition was a great example, with 28 players used including a number of Brewers players. We also regularly challenged younger players to try new things or train with some of the 1st grade girls which was extremely helpful. I believe this contributed to the successful year for the Brewers squad. Most of you will have heard this from me this year: “The thing I enjoyed most about coaching this year was – YOU’RE ALL SO NICE! My biggest challenge in helping you improve your performance was – YOU’RE ALL SO NICE!” As a result, one of my key aims moving forward is to still foster good people but to aid in developing your competitiveness, mental toughness & resilience in the heat of a game. This is one area that will really aid your development.

Results

Results are what count in the end but for me it’s the process you undertook along the way that counted more for me. I was really proud of the transition in your attitude & preparation which led to improved performances. But when it comes to results:

- 1st & 2nd Grade T20 semi finalists - Brewer Shield T20 runner up - Brewer Shield One-Day team just missed the finals - Hayley Jenson & Nilakshi De Silva both earned national selection after strong performances for the club - 17 girls earned selection across various state & Academy squads.

Where to for 2018/19 & beyond?

We came on in leaps & bounds in so many areas but there is still so much we can do t improve both as a club & individually:

1. Understand the commitment so you can make the best of the season for the club & for yourself 2. Thrive in the challenge & contest. Compete. Be great people but be even stronger competitors 3. Find ways you can contribute to your team’s performance, both on & off the paddock 4. Do the 1%ers well 5. Prepare diligently & thoughtfully 6. Be brave. Be prepared to make mistakes to grow & improve your game 7. Develop individual skills.

a. Batting (singles & turning the strike / top 4 batting through / playing spin / collapses / batting with a plan)

b. Bowling (extras / adapting to the game & opposition) c. Fielding (intensity / proactive vs reactive / catching) d. Captaincy, tactics & match awareness (read the game / What does your opponent want / not

want you to do?) 8. Leadership. We have naturally talented leaders within the club. I see a great opportunity to foster every

player as a leader in their own right

I would like to thank the many great leaders within the club , both on & off the field, who have contributed immensely across the season. In particular, Greg has done an enormous amount of work under great personal adversity & duress. His ability & passion to share his knowledge & experience is a tremendous asset to the club. Also, many thanks to Deb, Jeremy, Con, Nick, Jen, the rest of the committee & amazing volunteers who all make it easier for you to enjoy your cricket. I also can’t thank enough the wonderful example set by our leaders, in particular Gizelle, Ange & Al, in setting the tone for a shift in attitude, accountability & commitment. It has been great to work with you. But many others have been leaders in their own way which isn’t lost on the club & we thank you: Naomi, Darian, Emma, Jess & our representative players, to name a few.

And to finish, thank you, the players, for your enthusiasm, drive & willingness to learn & improve throughout a challenging year. These attributes not only helped the club exceed expectations in many ways but also hold the club & you as individuals in good stead for the future.

Sydney Tigers First Grade Women’s Report

The 2017/18 season for the women's club is certainly one we can be proud of. After a brief merge with Northern Districts during the 16/17 season, we once more stood as Tigers in First Grade. There were several new faces to the club for this season and all contributed to our rebuild. Although it wasn't the consistent season we were after, there were a number of excellent individual performances with Jessica Marks and Naomi McDonald each passing 50 twice and Anita Handono scoring her maiden 50 for the club. Our state and international representatives also contributed when they were available with Ange Reakes, Hayley Jensen, Nilakshi de Silva and Alyssa Healy posting scores over 50. On the bowling front, Emma Felsch did an outstanding job of leading the attack, well supported by all the bowlers, including Nell Bryson-Smith who made the jump from Brewer Shield to First Grade for the majority of the season. Along with Nell, Alex Timms also made the jump from Brewer Shield and did a great job behind the stumps. The women's club has produced some outstanding keepers and I can proudly say that trend seems to be continuing with Alex joining the Tigers this season. With the limited availability of our state representatives, there were several opportunities for our younger players to step up and get a taste of First Grade. The majority of these opportunities came during the 20 over competition when the following players made their First Grade debuts: Cate Caldwell, Lilly Dummett, Lilly Hodge, Lilly Campbell, Sarah Hodge and Mikaela Pappou (5 of these girls coming up from Brewer Shield). All of these players debuted on the 7th of January and despite the 48 degree heat, all contributed enthusiastically. Indeed, they continued to contribute in both First and Second Grade for the remainder of the season. The senior players did a great job welcoming all new faces and adapting to the weekly change in line ups. This level of commitment and loyalty goes a long way when a club is rebuilding and it is extremely encouraging to see the willingness from not just the players, but also the parents to turn up and support the club. A season can't be successful without the hard work of those on the sidelines and behind the scenes. Thank you to the Board and SCG Trust for your continued support. A big thanks goes to our coach, Russel Grimson, whose expertise in all areas of the game helped each one of us learn and grow. His tireless efforts in running trainings and ensuring we were game focused was clear by the decrease in sundries and increase in quick singles and turning ones into twos. To Mr and Mrs Felsch, thank you for scoring and helping prepare the ground each week. Lastly to our women's committee, led by Greg Healy, Deborah Smith and Jim Dummett ensured there were 3 women's teams taking the field every Sunday, thank you. Your passion and continued support for growing the women's game has us well placed to once again build successful women's teams. We couldn't have done it without you. Gizelle Plummer Capain

It was another strong season for the 2’s boys but unfortunately couldn’t make it past the quarter finals. Dropping two of the last three games, the team lost a bit of momentum going into the finals and put us on the back foot, having to bowl out the eventual premiers on a wicket that offered little for the bowlers. The season was filled with many personal highlights and some strong team performances. It was great to see many players rewarded with first grade games where they made major impacts in those games. Also seeing many young players coming through and performing shows the club is well set for the future.

As a batting group there were 13 hundreds scored which is an incredible effort. Congratulations to Suffan who scored 4 hundreds and had a great season overall. Tristen McDonald also had a very strong season with the bat, leading the averages and helping us get off to a great start in most games. They were well supported by Matt Pasternatsky, who was a stand out in the 1st Grade T20 quarter final win against Gordon, Liam Gibson and Nick Govers who all also scored hundreds throughout the year. There were many big totals set this year and it shows the strength and progression of the players who performed over the year.

It was a tough year for the bowlers who often found themselves on wickets that were flat and offered very little spin or movement off the seam. Having said that, they did a great job bowling out most teams and giving the batting group below par scores to chase. Congratulations to Ash Squire who once again had a 50+ wicket year including four 5 wicket hauls. Alex Bloomfield also had a strong season as our second leading wicket taker. The rest of the wickets were evenly shared amongst the others in the bowling group. A special mention to Hugh Sherriff and Harry Manenti who were very impressive in the games they played and bowled without luck. It’s promising to see them, along with Liam Scott, make some big inroads with their cricket this year and look set for strong seasons to come.

A big thankyou needs to go out the volunteers who helped this season. Alex Pasternatsky who scored all year and David Kelly who helped with lunches and afternoon teas. Their help made a world of difference for us and on behalf of the team I would like to say thank you!

Also, a big thank you to the coaching staff for their support all season led by Michael Haire. The team would also like to thank Michael Procajlo who would warm us up every game and offer the players support. It is greatly appreciated. Once again congratulations on another strong year for the 2’s boys.

Womens 2nd Grade Report

The 2017/18 season started with real promise with an outstanding win over Gordon in the first 50 over match. It appeared with the experience gained over the off season, the team would be a contender for season honours but as well know, injuries can certainly make it difficult at a high level in womens sport. The season proved difficult due mainly to injuries and our inability to draft new, experienced players into the side once the season had commenced. While the team had some really promising moments and were well positioned in several matches, wins could not be achieved. A great experience was created for our younger players as they were rotated up through the grades, including the combined T20 1st and 2nd grade competition. The Tigers has a history of success at bringing through young emerging players into senior cricket and then into elite cricket - our core of youth is very strong and we elevated numerous players under the mature leadership of the group to taste the experience of senior premier cricket. This will stand the club in good stead for the years to come. The experience of Kylie Hocknell, Annapurna Mukherjee (Disha), Cate Caldwell, Al Mueller, Darien Dubb-Lynch and Anna Butler all provided strong direction for our youth who played through the grades. Special mention to Darien for her 6/20 vs Gordon and her consistent match performances throughout the season. All rounder Kylie Hocknell before requiring a major shoulder reconstruction led the way both with bat and ball and her leadership captaining a young side was very impressive. Hopefully a fully fit Kylie will be on the field again in 2018/19. Great to see the continued improvement at this level from Nell Bryson- Smith (mainly 1st grade), Sara Hodge, Mikaela Pappou and Ahilya Chandel. The combined 1st / 2nd grade T20 saw players elevated for matches with success. Disha, Cate Caldwell and Darien Dubb-Lynch all played key roles in the side making the semi finals before bowing out to eventual winners, Bankstown. Our valued youth were also provided opportunities to test themselves against strong opposition with promising results which augers well for the Tigers future. Thanks to the work of Paul Lynch, our match manager and scorer, who made the match run smoothly off the field assisted by Jodie Hodge. Our skippers, Kylie Hocknell and Al Mueller provided great leadership throughout the season both on match days and at training. The players appreciated the coaching panel and the support provided by the Tigers and look forward to a stronger season 2018/19 with more players provided the opportunity to push up into Premier Cricket. Mens 3rd Grade Report

The 2017/2018 season shaped up as a very exciting one for Sydney Cricket Club third grade. After another gruelling pre-season including the Wanda sand dunes, came the first round at the end of September, the boys were ready to go. This season was an extremely exciting one for the club with a lot of junior representative players filtering into senior premier cricket. Third grade was the beneficiary of some of this young talent, with a range of players debuting in higher grades at various times throughout the season. Overall it was an extremely successful season for the side, unfortunately falling at the final hurdle, finishing runners up to Sydney University. The key to Third grades success was the ability to keep the core group of players together for the majority of the season, which can be a tough task at times with players moving up and down the grades due to injuries and form. A Special mention must be made to Dominic Tonkin who has led this side particularly well over the last few seasons and for the majority of the 2017/18 season. Dom epitomised the Tigers mantra of ‘club first, team second, individual third’ when due to a run of poor form, he dropped himself to Fourth grade. Dom regained his batting form and returned to the side and was a huge contributing factor, not only helping myself with my captaincy, but standing up in another deep finals run for the tigers.

The first third of the season saw the Tigers playing four of the five games away from home, travelling to Blacktown, Hawkesbury, Campbelltown and St. George, while hosting Western Suburbs at Birchgrove. Although it was a tough draw to start the season it was an excellent start for Third grade, recording four wins and a washout draw that had us sitting at the top end of the table. Starting the season strong is always important when aiming to play finals cricket and the side really hit the ground running which is a real testament to the boys’ effort at training. A continuing factor for the success of the season was that it certainly was a team effort with a number of individuals stepping up at crucial times and team mates sacrificing personal statistics for the benefit of the side. This was evident through the many highlights during the early part of the season, with a few of these being a hattrick for Craig Di Blasio against Campbelltown, Marlon Rodrigo scoring back to back 70’s and Stephen Kings’ match saving hundred against St. George. Stephen came in with the team struggling at 5/107 and was the final wicket of the innings after compiling a classy 124 to take the tigers total to 315, with great support from Marlon Rodrigo (73) and Nic Taylor (64). Following a gritty bowling performance, the team recorded a 25-run victory, thanks to Stephen’s innings.

After a very dominant start to the season, the middle third of the season saw the side hit a few speed bumps which interrupted our momentum. During this five-game span we recorded our first loss of the season just before Christmas to Northern Districts, while going down to top of the table Parramatta, following the Christmas break, and achieving another two victories against Bankstown and Fairfield Liverpool and a washout draw against eventual premiers Sydney University. Once again there were many highlights throughout this period of the season as well as some lowlights, where the team’s desire to win was questioned by coaching staff, which really drove the boys heading into the final third of the season. Mayank Sharma scoring back to back 50’s and Nic Taylor carrying his bat in wet conditions in a one-dayer scoring 163 at better than a run a ball against Fairfield-Liverpool were real highlights of the season.

The team was fired up and ready for a big finish to the season, hoping to secure a finals spot, needing to record three wins out of the remaining five games. After recording back to back wins against North Sydney and UNSW in a rain affected one-day match reduced to 31 overs a side, another final series for the tigers was well within reach. The most dominant batting display of the season against North Sydney saw two of the clubs’ young guns combine for an opening stand of 158, with Nic Taylor scoring 69 and Liam Scott carrying his bat for an unbeaten 201 at almost a run a ball in a total of 374, admirably supported by Mayank Sharma scoring a better than a run a ball 53.

Following on from the dominant batting performance, five of our bowlers were amongst the wickets with Craig Di Blasio the highlight taking 5/24 off 19 overs to dismiss North Sydney for 143. Following on from these victories Third grade recorded back to back losses to Eastern Suburbs and Randwick-Petersham, meaning a victory was needed in the final one-day match against Sutherland to secure a finals birth. Being a clutch game for the side the senior players of Dominic Tonkin, Stephen King and Mark Frei really stepped up. Dom came in with the side battling at 3/34, scoring 74 to help us reach of total of 230. Then with the ball, Mark Frei took 4/29 off his 10 overs, while Stephen King took 3/30 to help record a comfortable victory to secure fifth spot for the finals series.

Heading into the finals as underdogs, with each game an elimination game and needing to bowl the opposition out to secure victory, the boys were excited for the challenge ahead. We headed to Asquith Oval for the

Page 62

Quarterfinal against the defending premiers Northern Districts. Bowling first a quick start was needed, which was supplied by Cameron Holmes, grabbing back to back wickets to have ND’s on the back foot, finishing the innings with figures of 2/23. Once again senior players Mark Frei (4/16 off 9.1) and Justin Rodgie (3/17 off 13) rose to the occasion rolling ND’s for 103. A poor start with the bat saw the tigers in trouble at 2/2, but a steady hand from Nic Taylor compiling a classy 71, with support from Hugh Sherriff (30) and a hard fought 43* from Dominic Tonkin, batting on one foot after badly spraining his ankle during the opening stages of our bowling innings, saw us take a first innings lead of 84. Following a big hitting second innings from Northern Districts, the Tigers needed to survive 24 overs to secure a first innings victory, which was achieved after losing 3 quick wickets. Due to unforeseen circumstances Travis Loxton was unfortunately unavailable for selection for the remainder of the finals but was a huge contributor towards the success of third grade throughout the season.

The tables had turned and we were now the higher ranked side in the Semi Finals taking on the sixth placed Eastern Suburbs, who we had lost to a few rounds prior, which meant the boys were well and truly fired up. With players available for selection following the end of the school season, unfortunately Cameron Holmes missed out on selection, despite playing the year with Third grade. This was extremely hard for Cam who was one of the leading bowlers in the side. Cam continued to support the team through the remainder of the final series. Easts sent us in to bat, with the side recording a total of 204 in a well-balanced team effort with 8 batsmen scoring double figures, but unfortunately, no one making their stamp on the game and going on to a big score. With the weather taking a turn we were able to take 3 quick wickets before the heavens opened up to have Easts reeling after day 1. The bowling unit continued their good form on day 2, dismissing Easts for 78 with wickets to Justin Rodgie (4/22 off 8), Harry Manenti (3/29 off 9) and Hugh Sherriff (2/23 off 9). We then batted out the remainder of the game to secure a first innings win, finishing 7/144 with Harry Manenti (37) and Josh Bass (35) being the pick of the batsmen.

The grand final saw us take on Sydney University at Sydney University oval. Needing to bowl the opposition out we sent Uni into bat and following a gritty, tiger like performance in the field, we bowled them out for 274 following 103 overs, and more than a day in the field. Five of the teams’ bowlers were in the wickets with Hugh Sherriff the standout taking a phenomenal 5/41 off 22 overs, while Harry Manenti was outstanding support taking 2/31 off 23 including 13 maidens. The bowling unit was terrific all year but to restrict a side to less than 3 an over on such a high-quality pitch and outfield was a real testament to their hard work and effort during training and games throughout the season. The team was in high spirits during the innings break, confident of chasing down the runs for victory. Unfortunately, Sydney University used their higher ranking extremely well, and essentially strangled us out of the game, bowling stump to stump, with a ring field making it very difficult to score runs. Ultimately, we fell 104 runs short of the total, but the game was a lot closer

than reflected on the scoreboard. Six of our batsmen scored double figures with fighting knocks from Liam Scott (51) and Mayank Sharma (43) the highlights. It was brilliant to see so many current and past players on the hill over the two days supporting the team and was an outstanding effort from everyone involved in the club, past and present.

Massive thanks to everyone behind the scenes that made the season possible. To the coaching staff of Michael Haire, Michael Procajlo and Matt Ryan, for your help on training days. To Debbie Holmes for scoring the whole season, the boys appreciate it and it makes everyone’s job on game day much easier. Gary King for all your help setting up the ground, organising drinks, running water and the countless first aid help, and to Ann King for organising lunches and afternoon tea. Finally, to all the parents and supporters who have helped in any way throughout the season, it is muchly appreciated and we wouldn’t be the club we are, without this support. Overall it was an extremely successful year for Third grade, with some amazing performances from so many individuals achieving personal and team success. Personally, for me it was one of the most enjoyable seasons of grade cricket I have been involved in, and it has been a pleasure to lead this side, along with the help from Dom Tonkin in the beginning of the season. Looking forward to going one better next season.

FINANCIAL AND ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18

Page 68

Mens 4th Grade Report

After 2016/17 success the 4th grade boys returned for another chance to play finals cricket and realize the

ultimate prize of winning a competition. It became increasingly obvious very early in the year that this competition

had continued as in the previous ten years in becoming increasingly more competitive. Less poor sides, better

players, more depth at big clubs all contributing to the toughness of 4th grade. On top of this Sydney’s 4th grade

side would see very few familiar names throughout the year with only 3 regular players from the year before

returning to the grade week in and week out. 31 players would grace the black and gold in 4th grade this year – 16

of these players would at some stage play a role in higher grades, including one in first grade. During the home

and away season, in 15 games we won 10 lost 4 and had one draw. To finish 5th and once again qualify as Reid

Cup finalists.

The team started the season well under the watchful eye of stand in skipper Alex Rashleigh. He made sure when

the reins were handed over Sydney had no blemishes to its name and we well on track for 2017/18 finals. When

the skipper returned from injury in Round 3 this march forward continued. Outstanding performances including

Lachie Beattie’s 98, Trav Loxton and Tom Mullen passing 50 and Tom Mullen taking 4 poles in a round 1

drubbing of Blacktown. Trav Loxton’s good form would continue in Round 2 with a solid 90 and Tom Mullen’s 6 fa

meant these boys were all but lost to 4th grade for the remainder of the year. This season was going to require

others to stand up and they did. Justin Felsch the years leading run scorer would put together a great 85 when

Sydney were under the pump and a quick fire 47 from keeper Bass meant Sydney were 3-0 after 3 rounds.

At the half way point in the season Sydney had played 8 games – won 5, drawn 1 and lost 3. We had new faces

and new names but had certainly lacked the continuity and consistency of the season before. We had struggled

to battle through tough periods and could not wrestle back momentum once it was lost. In saying that there was a

lot of promise. Josh Bass had scored 4th grades first 100 in 3 seasons, Justin Felsch and Ahmed Hassan had

shown real positive signs at the top of the order and Alex Rashleigh and Tyler Meyer had been ever reliable with

the ball.

After Christmas Sydney knew they had their work cut out for them to play finals cricket. They would have to play

well and win plenty of games into the run into the end of the year. Starting with a Round 9 win vs Parramatta,

Ahmed Hassan demonstrated Santa had bought him more runs with a good 80 and Rash once again did the work

with the pill. Round 10 Sydney did not turn up and if it wasn’t for Trav Loxton’s second good score in a row (67

and 79*) we never would have got over the line. Jackson Edwards’ 4 fa would be an important step in his late

season form. We would once again lose Trav for the rest of the year to 3rd grade.

Round 11 would make it 3 in a row and start to cement our spot in the top 6 with gaps being created to the

chasing pack. North Sydney came to play but Ahmed Hassan 73* and Dom Tonkin 50 ensured Sydney would

pass the total 6 down. Another victory in Round 12 against a lowly placed UNSW in a rain affected game was an

important step for the confidence as Sydney never looked in doubt to take the clash. Dom Tonkin again showed

his class with an unbeaten 50 ably supported by young gun Justin Felsch 34*. Round 13 would be a

Saturday/Sunday finals practice against in from side Eastern Suburbs. The game didn’t go well and after an initial

onslaught from Alex Rashleigh with the ball Sydney were dominated and would go home to reassess whether

they were genuine contenders or pretenders. This loss also took away the prospect of a top 3 finish.

6th vs 7th in the penultimate round meant Sydney needed to win to keep finals prospects in their own hands.

Victory was assured after Justin Felsch demonstrated great maturity in grafting 64 and Alex Rashleigh destroyed

the top order with 5/28, Sydney by 60 runs. Round 15 was again a must win with sides behind up chasing for top

6 spots and not out of the mathematical race should we lose. A road trip to Sutherland saw a good bowling

performance reducing Sutherland to 7/150 from 50 overs – Avery Weilandt and Jack O’Brien bowling outstanding

spells taking 3 wickets each. Sydney were cruising with Michael Ho making a fantastic 62 and were 4/118 when

he was dismissed. What should have been a regulation finish became frantic as Sydney lost momentum and

looked like the game. This was until invaluable knocks of 14* and 8* from Avery Weilandt and Dylan Bent bought

SYDNEY CRICKET CLUB INCORPORATED

FINANCIAL AND ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18

Page 69

victory home with 10 balls to spare and 2 wickets in hand. Another remarkable round 15 finish. Another finals

qualification for Sydney 4th grade.

A quarterfinal week that saw Northern Districts have to move the game to the home of cricket saw Sydney enter

the clash quietly confident. Whilst inconsistent cricket had plagued our season we had a good side, a little more

experience and we were battled hardened from some tough clashes in recent weeks. Winning the toss we

customarily bowled first and reduced Northern Districts to 128 from 80.2 overs. Alex Rashleigh 17 overs 3/30

showed why he is Mr. April and led the attack who all contributed to the Northern Districts downfall. Unfortunately

an 8th wicket partnership of 50+ meant the score drifted passed the 100 and even 120 mark but Sydney were

confident in their ability to chase the score, especially when they went in 0 wickets down after Day 1. What would

follow on Day 2 was high pressure finals cricket and Sydney like they had at tough times most of the year would

cave. Sydney would be bowled out for 94 with Marlon Rodrigo the only player offering any resistance. Sydney’s

title defence would fall 2 games short, but more disappointingly we lost a game we should have won and this was

much harder to live with. A good season – but in the end a poor finish.

Any team that trains and plays for nearly 40 weeks a year are going to require plenty of support. To those who

helped me by completing off field tasks throughout the year, you made my job of concentrating on the cricket so

much easier. To Peter Rashleigh in particular, your work at this club is second to none and to Alex Rashleigh to

stand in as captain while I was injured and away I appreciate you being my sounding board and able leader when

the time calls. To my father, Simon Breen, not many 4th grade teams have a person to run water after a wicket

falls, a man that organizes tea, marks the creases at intervals and jumps in wherever he is needed, thank you for

all of your help.

To all the parents who lent a hand at any stage this year especially Mr and Mrs Felsch whether with afternoon

teas, drinks or anything in between it did not go unnoticed. To Brian Lulham who spent countless Friday

afternoons down at Birchgrove to assist in the laying of covers, we thank you for this simple but demanding task,

it is a gesture of a man with so much class and love for this great club.

To the coaches, especially Michael Haire, Michael Procajlo, David Williams and Matt Ryan and to the board you

create a fantastic atmosphere, an unbelievably professional club with outstanding facilities, and always challenge

us to take the club forward. Thank you for you ongoing support.

I look forward to next season and hope as many of those 31 that played with me this year return for another crack

in any grade for the Sydney Tigers in 2018/19.

Mens 5th Grade Report

Building on from 2016/17 we gathered for pre-season training at the SCG looking to make the next leap in our progression as a group. From the outside, the 17/18 season reads as “more of the same” from a results perspective, however this is very much not the case. Many challenges were undertaken by the playing group, senior group and therefore myself. From disruptive players to injuries to unavailability’s it was never going to be smooth sailing in Fifth grade. Early season games were the biggest challenge for the leadership group. Behavioural issues in the team lead to lapses in concentration on the field and disciplinary negligence with the bat and ball in the hand. The results over the first half of the season very much suggest this. Senior players however began to reluctantly accept their role in the team performance and this began to shine through in a run after Christmas which saw the team string consecutive victories on the board. This also meant the style of play began to improve. Several young players such as Jack O’Brien, Rashad Rizme, Kshitij Cyril and Ellis Sherrif began to take on extra responsibility whilst slightly older players such as Declan Armstrong, Liam Robson and Mitchell Blow occupied leadership roles which had previously been neglected. Considering the average age of the side was under 20, the future of Sydney Cricket Club is firmly in the hands of this core group of young players who are beginning to show signs of match improvement but also growing as leaders of men’s cricket. As a grade team, we finished 15th overall (3 spots down from the previous season) this included 1 draw and 9 loses – 6 of which were exceptionally narrow either losing by less than 41 runs or 3 wickets. Bar 2-3 performances, the team played some exceptional cricket overall despite being hamstrung by several selection dilemmas, fill in players and lopsided team lists. Considering all the aforementioned, it was a remarkable season. I firmly believe this group of players is ready to make the next step in their respective Grade Cricket journeys. One of the key elements discussed as a club and leadership team was the style in which we hoped to execute our on-field strategies during the 17/18 season. The stability around the core group of players in the side allowed the younger players to establish their own individual identities whilst nurturing an environment where players were able to express themselves. Early on the encouragement of “playing your own way” was stressed to these individuals, and they duly delivered. The sides fielding standards improved, in particular - the ground fielding. Having said that, the catching would gradually improve as the season progressed. “Unfortunately, the key discipline of the game which let us down as a team was our collective efforts in batting. With the exception of a couple of outstanding individual performances, we were as a group below par – Which encouragingly, the players were acutely aware of. I fully expect the group regardless of 2017/18 grading to improve as they learn from their collective and individual experiences” – This was my sentiment at the end of the 2017 season. In the 17/18 season two 5th graders scored centuries whilst there were also some other notable fifties to accompany these centuries – The foundations were very much there. Disappointingly we couldn’t maintain our consistency, however this was not made easy with lopsided team selections. I’m excited to be continuing my role as the 5th Grade captain. The reason for this is being part of the education journey for players in the Greenshield program. To be coming through the team and making a mark on their way to the higher grades is a rewarding journey I’m a part of. Long standing players such Damian Rapisarda, Mitchell Blow, Michael Ho, Dhanush Srinivas, Liam Robson and Declan Armstrong are players I looked to in this past season to help develop and lead the team both in the dressing room and on the field. These players are beginning to discover themselves and their individual games which bodes well for season 18/19. Younger players such as Jack O’Brien, Ellis Sherrif, Kshitij Cyril, Sebastian Buchanan, and Sebastian Hodge are the future of this club and will continue to improve with more time spent in the side. Overall, I’m excited to see what the 2018/19 season holds for all in the 5th Grade squad. Samad Shaikh 5th Grade Captain

Poidevin-Gray Shield Report

Michael Haire and I sat down on a Wednesday two weeks prior to the first round commencing and began sketching a squad for the upcoming season. We knew it was going to be a young squad as we had one U/16s, two U/17s and two U/19s lads all in the mix for selection.

I had no expectations for this group. My hope was that we would win some games and the boys would learn about themselves and how to play tough cricket whilst developing their own games along the way.

Well wasn't I wrong there, not only did we learn about ourselves play some really good cricket and took it deep into the competition where had rain not played a part I strongly believe that we would have played in a Grand Final.

Along the way to the semi-final we had won 6 from our 9 regular round games, one of which was a last over 20/20 chase against Mosman which I believe was the best win I've been a part of in the last 5 years of in PGs.

In the regular round games, we ventured to Penrith where we played on the hottest day on record for the last 30 years. It got to 47.3 but our effort and application was there all day and I was proud of how the boys handled themselves because it would have been really easy to throw the toys and not commit to the game.

We finished 7th and progressed to play Parramatta, who finished second and were current holders of the shield at Old Kings. We set a good score of 6-233 and then bowled them out for 177 to progress to play Gordon at Chatswood in the semi Final.

The semi was a rain affected fixture, but we won the toss and bowled them out for 200 but unfortunately, we didn't get back on which ended our campaign.

As it was my last year of PGs I couldn't ask for a better group of boys to play alongside. Their attitude on game day was second to none and the effort was always there. I look forward to seeing how this side progresses next year and I hope that they can go one further and get to the Grand Final.

Recognition must go to Liam, Lachie and Harry who all pulled out of representative teams to play in the semi-final for us. It was a great commitment and much appreciated.

Thanks must be given to Ian Wright and Harpreet for scoring for us and all the parents for their support. I think we had the best support base of any side in the competition which is extremely exciting. Also, our fellow clubman who came to support us through the year and cheer us on no matter the where about.

Final thanks must go to Pubes. He didn't have to give up his few spare Sunday’s to coach us but as a playing group it was greatly appreciated, and I know that everyone enjoyed his company even if he ran a poor Quiz, but we certainly learnt a lot from him on how to play tough hard cricket and I think we saw and will continue to see players development because of it.

Player Profiles

NIC TAYLOR - Tails had a standout year with the bat and is really starting to come along as a top order batsman. He was our rock up the top and a great sounding board for ideas. Should be exciting to see him take this team on next year and push higher up the grades

LIAM SCOTT - Scotty had a decent year, he is technically perfect up the top. I think Scotty will have learnt a lot about his cricket this year especially in 20/20 cricket. He is a future first grader and look forward to seeing him dominate next year.

DELRAY RAWLINS - We were lucky enough to have Del’s class in our side this year. He offered great value with bat and ball. We wish him luck for his summer back home and thank him for his efforts

Page 81

TRAVIS LOXTON - Trav floated around the order this year but certainly at the back end made the 3 role his own. He has a habit of being there when the job is finished which is a great skill and asset to have, Travy will go big next year.

HARRY MANENTI - I am always going to be tougher on Haz than anyone else, but Haz had a great year with bat and ball scoring some valuable runs at the back end of innings and bowling in crucial periods in 20/20 cricket for us. He should step up next year and lead this side with bat and ball.

JOSH BASS - Bassy was the joker of the team, offering great value both on and off the field. His keeping is going from strength to strength and his batting is coming along nicely to. I look forward to seeing him progress up the grades.

TOM MULLEN - Mull had a break out year and was scoring runs and taking wickets when injury struck him down. He will be a key member in the side next year as he will be pivotal with both bat and ball.

MARLON RODRIGO - Marlon played the first half of the season for us and scored some valuable runs. He finished our innings really well and should look to control the pace of the game next year and really dominate.

LACHIE BEATTIE - Beats was great value throughout the whole program. He learnt a lot about white ball bowling and added some crucial runs. He is certainly going to be a key next year if they are to go deep in the comp.

CHRIS THOMPSETT - Tommo was huge for us this year. He took massive wickets in every game and delivered some brutal spells. He played on one leg for us for the last 3 games and was tremendous value taking wickets in the first over of most of our matches. He will carve up next year and look forward to seeing him get fit and dominate.

HUGH SHERRIFF - Hughey was really good this year. His skill set for a 16 year old is scary. He took wickets all the way through the campaign and learnt a lot to. He is going to be another key member next year.

AVERY WEILANDT - Avery was in the squad the whole campaign and his commitment was exceptional. He was part of two really good wins vs Wests and was great to have around. I look forward to seeing him be the main spinner next year and enjoying his cricket.

TYLER MEYER - Ty was a really good addition when he came in for Mull. He added a great deal of skill and composure to the team. I look forward to seeing progress in his cricket back home as he has a great deal of skill for an 18 year old.

OLLIE LITTLE – Ollie came into the squad for the last few games to cover for some injuries. He didn’t play, but thanks must be given to him for carrying out the 12th man duties. He could have easily have said no, but it was much appreciated and hopefully he learnt a few things whilst he was around the group which he can apply when he comes into the team next year.

BEN MANENTI – Led the team exceptionally well. Was an aggressive, thoughtful captain and had the respect of all the players. He is an easy captain to work with. I would personally like to thank Benny for his commitment as captain and congratulate him on all he has achieved as player during his PG’s program. – MH

AW Green Shield Report

As we all know with our tremendous success last year at green shield level with the side going on to win the

competition, this year was our chance to back it up and show everyone the dominance the Tigers have from a

young age. However even though we didn't get the results on the field we may of wanted it is well and truly

believed the side of 2017/18 improved and learnt in all aspects of the game to further develop their cricket in the

years to come and further instilled the Tigers dominance.

The season started in May with two selection nights that were conducted at the SCG, from here a squad of 14

were picked with 5 more players being picked in the Tigers Academy Squad. From this the full squad trained

throughout the winter developing the skills and temperament needed not just to succeed at a Green shield level

but also at a grade level. The squad sat down at a full day training day at Drummoyne Oval and together decided

on how they were going to play their cricket which ended up being based around 5 core values SELFLESSNESS,

ATTITUDE, HARD WORK, RESPECT and ENJOYMENT. These values were how the squad based each of their

performances on both as a squad and individually with the belief this is how all Tigers should attempt to play.

Into competition the team lead by Hugh Sheriff went on to win four out of the seven competition games meaning

they had qualified for finals cricket whom we played Northern Districts and went down by 2 wickets in one of the

most exciting under aged cricket games many have witnessed. Wins came against Sutherland, North Sydney,

Penrith, Northern District and Hawkesbury in the rounds. There were many stand out performances throughout

the regular rounds with the bat and ball, 4 half centuries were scored throughout the rounds these being scored

by Lachlan Shaw (50), Kane Anderson (57), Kaleb Daley (52) and Hugh Sheriff (62), while Josh Yeoh in the

quarter final scored 75 at the top of the order. The highest run scorer throughout the competition for the Tigers

being Lachlan Shaw (202) along with 9 dismals behind the stumps.

Our bowling which was arguably one of the strongest in the competition with all bowlers apart from one due to

unavailability (country) went on to play grade cricket at some time during the season with Hugh Sheriff going on to

play first grade against Sydney Uni. Hugh lead the bowling group throughout the season taking a total of 17

wickets which included a 5 wicket haul against North Sydney. Hugh was well supported by the rest of the bowling

group especially from Kane Anderson (11), Ollie Little (10), Sebastian Buchanan (10), Sebastian Hodge (4), Jack

O’Brien (2) and Kshitij Cyril (2).

Although everyone may not of got the numbers they wanted to throughout the green shield season every player

should be commended and congratulated on their season as everyone at some point of the season contributed to

a win. From the green shield season 8 players went on to represent the club at grade level, which coach Daniel

Smith was very pleased with seeing these players make that transition.

Dan put in many countless hours behind the scenes to ensure that all training days and game days went along

smoothly and gave the boys the best chance of wining. Dan brought both playing and coaching experience to the

squad which allowed the boys to learn and manage their games in a way that would allow them to grow as

cricketers. Dans goal before the season started was on top of winning the competition was to also teach the

players the in and outs of cricket that many people over look. From our results and over half the squad going on

to play grade cricket it is safe to say that Dan has well and truly accomplished that goal.

Of course it is said that our game wouldn't be able to go ahead without the countless support of the volunteers.

Enough cannot be said for the parents efforts towards our lunches which were second to none with many thanks

going to Judy Shaw, Jackie Sheriff and Jason Little who went above and beyond to offer the best lunches and

snacks that were made available. Also many thanks go to all parents who helped out on game days by bringing

high quality meals.

From a coaching point of view it is time to improve on 2017/18 season which although difficult will be very

achievable with Dan leading the green shield squad again. We look to continue the Tiger way of playing and

hopefully going on to be the number 1 Green shield side in the competition.

Matt Kent.

Assistant Coach.

Brewer Shield Report

It was a positive season for the Brewer Shield this year. The season commenced in November with several players returning for their second year of the the compeititon. A squad of 14 girls was selected with aspirations of further individual and team improvement from the previous season. This was clearly achieved in both the 40 over and T20 formats, narrowly missing the semi finals of both after some really encouraging performances. All aspects of the girl's cricket improved due to the level of commitment made at training and greater experience in the tactics of cricket. Most importantly, the girls always played the game as a team and in the right spirit towards the opposition while having fun along the way. It was a very enjoyable and rewarding season and all involved are to be congratulated. Captain Lily Dummett, lef from the front all year to take out the 40-over player of the year. This was highlighted in her performance scoring a century against Manly-Warringah at Manly Oval. In the same match she took figures of 4/8 from her 4.2 overs. Samira Dimeglio finished of her season strongly in the T20 competition. She averaged 63.00 with the bat for the Brewer T20 Competition with a 33 not out from 28 balls being the highlight of her competition. She also returned strong figures with the ball claiming best figures of 3 wickets for no runs from her 2 overs. Lily Campbell had a positive year with both bat and ball, contributing strongly throughout the season. Her bowling was extremely consistent, taking a wicket in every match except 3. Her batting was outstanding averaging 27.3 in her 7 innings in the Brewer Shield competition. Gemma Lockhart tookout the Coaches Player of the year for her outstanding performances both on and off the field. Her bowling was superb throughout the season and her batting is improving every innings. Gemma’s attitude off the field and desire to learn is what stood her out for the coaches player of the year. Major Award Winners Player of the Year: Samira Dimeglio 40 Over Player of the Year: Lily Dummett T20 Player of the Year: Samira Dimeglio All round development Award: Lilly Campbell Coaches Player of the Year: Gemma Lockhart Special thanks to our volunteers and supporters throughout the season. These matches couldn’t happen without your continual support and guidance. Congratulations on a wonderful season, let look to take it another step forward next year. Greg Healy
