Administrative Officer

It was a testing season looking after Cricket Illawarra without a President & Vice President in season 2018/19.

Adding to the difficulty was taking on the role of Zone Administrator of Greater Illawarra Zone, where the focus

was aligning 4 associations to the way I administer Cricket Illawarra. Had I not been appointed, Cricket Illawarra

may have been treated as a second class association by other associations.

I thank the club volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the season to keep the role busy and being upfront

and honest in their feelings and also being supportive. I look forward to continuing to be of service to all clubs and

treating all 10 clubs as my favourite club.

I will take a moment to thank the members of the Management Committee who contributed to key aspects of

Cricket Illawarra this season, and took on roles that were helpful in lightening my workload

The main disappointment this season was the introduction of many new Community Cricket NSW employees in

our area who are on full time wages with offices & company vehicles, compared to the hardworking

Administrator who is here to support all clubs and members, who trundles off to shift work to earn a living.

In my role of Zone Administrator, I am continually let down by poor communication from CNSW and lack of

responses to questions I ask, but this is a common complaint in Regional NSW.

Assisting the Junior sub-committee this season was also a major task but I must say they did a wonderful job. The

Junior Rep sub-committee also had all new faces on board and I thank the members of their sub-committee who

were very supportive.

Introducing the Women’s competition and seeing 2 teams head off to the Masters comp in Orange were

highlights, as was introducing Jum Media to cover Cricket Illawarra T-20 finals in place of Bar TV.

Publicity

A very busy season with local media with at least 4 requests weekly during the season.

According to some media outlets, Cricket Illawarra Social Media surpasses any other sporting organisation in our

local area apart from our National teams

No weekly Newsletter was made this season, primarily as a reason for lack of assistance and the fact that Cricket

Illawarra Social Media was an information page.

Umpires Association

President – Morgan Prosser

Secretary-Treasurer – Barry Moir

Umpire numbers:

This season there were fewer active members of the Illawarra CUA than previously. Long standing umpires,

Charles Brockley, John Cauduro and Barry Moir, retired and mid-season David Dobinson and John Walker both

became unavailable. Only one new umpire, namely Andrew Still, joined the Association and during the season the

maximum number of active umpires was 17. Unfortunately, however, because of work commitments and sickness

there was no weekend when everyone was available. Where possible, there were two umpires for each 1st Grade

match and one umpire for each 2nd Grade match but at times only one umpire could be appointed to 1st Grade

matches. It was seldom possible to cover many lower Grade fixtures.

Education and development:

In early August, the NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association conducted a weekend training course on the

Laws of Cricket. A total of 12 Illawarra and Shoalhaven participants attended the course facilitated by Laurie Borg

and Neil Findlay. At the conclusion of the training, 8 participants attempted an examination on the Laws of Cricket

to become members of NSWCUSA.

Prior to the season, all those intending to umpire in the Illawarra completed an open book examination on the

Laws of Cricket. During each monthly meeting, there were discussions about questions on Laws and Playing

Conditions, various aspects of field craft and comments made by captains in their match reports.

Finals appointments:

South Coast District CUA faced a shortage of umpires for their end-of-season matches and accordingly Rod Porter,

John Walker and Brian Whitehouse made themselves available for the 3rd and 4th Grade Semi-Final matches. Evan

Lane then umpired the South Coast 4th Grade Final.

Season highlights:

With the Greater Illawarra team participating in the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup, Illawarra CUA umpires were

appointed to matches in this competition. David Cullen and Neil Findlay umpired Greater Illawarra’s two home

matches against St George and Newcastle played at North Dalton Park and subsequently David Cullen umpired

Eastern Suburbs’ two home matches against Gordon and University of NSW. John Walker also umpired Randwick-

Petersham’s two home matches against Mosman and Gordon.

For the first time, Greater Illawarra Zone competitions were conducted at both Senior and Junior levels and the

following Illawarra CUA umpires were involved – David Cullen, Brian Druery, Matt Ryan, Steve Saye, Andrew Still,

Ray Trindall, Brian Whitehouse. David Cullen and John Oliver (South Coast DCUA) were appointed to the Burns

Cup Final played between Illawarra and South Coast.

In addition, several Illawarra CUA umpires once again stood in the NSW Junior DCA Inter-Association Shield

Competitions. The appointed officials for the Greater Illawarra teams involved were Chris Adams, Brian Druery,

Evan Lane, Steve Saye and Ray Trindall and Brian Whitehouse.

The umpire exchange program between the Illawarra CUA and New Zealand’s Central Districts CUSA continued in

January, with Robert Murphy travelling from New Zealand to umpire in Wollongong. Frank Ciocci then flew to

New Zealand to officiate in two One-Day matches in Palmerston North. This exchange is now well established and

umpires from both Associations have already indicated their desire to participate in future years.

The second umpire exchange between the NSWCUSA and Illawarra CUA also took place, with two umpires from

each Association involved. Frank Ciocci and Steve Saye (Illawarra CUA) travelled to Sydney to stand in 2nd Grade

matches with Andrew Yarad and Bob McGregor while Andrew Coates and Alan Haynes (NSWCUSA) officiated in

Wollongong 1st Grade matches with David Cullen and Neil Findlay. The exchange was highly successful, and a

further exchange is planned for next season.

In February, a T20 Tri-Series competition involving multi-cultural teams representing Melbourne Stars, Melbourne

Renegades and Sydney Thunder was played in Wollongong. The preliminary matches were umpired by Illawarra

CUA umpires Frank Ciocci, David Dobinson, Brian Druery, Barry Ferguson and Steve Saye and South Coast DCUA

umpire John Oliver. The umpires for the Final played between Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars were

David Cullen and Neil Findlay.

At NSW Country level, David Cullen was again appointed to the Country Umpires Representative Panel. He

officiated at the Country Colts Carnival in Narrabri and also umpired the Sixers Conference Final of the Plan B

Regional T20 Bash at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Illawarra CUA Annual Presentation Dinner was held in April to celebrate the season and to recognise the

achievements of members. Worthy winners of the Association’s two major awards were Frank Ciocci (Umpire of

the Year) and Chris Adams (Most Improved Umpire of the Year). Also recognised were those who umpired in

various Finals and those who achieved significant milestones, notably Rod Porter (500 matches) and Ray Trindall

(300 matches). Rod and Ray are to be congratulated on their respective achievements and to be acknowledged

for the wonderful contribution they have both made to Illawarra Cricket. In addition, well deserved Life

Membership of Illawarra CUA was awarded to David Cullen and Peter Ferguson for their long standing service.

Finally, Morgan Prosser and Barry Moir are to be recognised for their efforts during the season. Morgan has led

the Association with his usual whole-hearted enthusiasm while Barry has performed his many administrative

duties diligently. Their commitment to the Association has been greatly appreciated by all members.

GREATER ILLAWARRA ZONE REPRESENTATIVE PROGRAMS

In 2018/19 the new Greater Illawarra Zone (GIZ) was formed overseeing the governing cricket associations –

Illawarra, South Coast, Highlands and Shoalhaven. Illawarra entered the following inter association competitions.

Opens Inter Association - Burns Cup

Squad: Graeme Batty ©,Mitch Hearn, Duncan Maddinson, Mitch McCrae, Tom McDevitt, Andrew Page,

Pushpinder Singh, Toby Dodds, Pat Hammond, Jason Bunyan, Xavier McDevitt, Rhys Voysey,

Udara Jayasundara, Blake Owen

Officials: Stuart Bridges (Coach/Manager)

Rd 1 Illawarra 6/163 (M McCrae 63, G Batty 28, T McDevitt 23) def

Highlands 162 (Z McDevitt 4/17, P Hammond 3/28, J Bunyan 2/22)

FINAL Illawarra 7/197 (G Batty 81no, P Singh 51, U Jayasundara 20) def

South Coast 6/196 (M Hearn 3/31)

In short, a couple of wins & we were able to secure the Burns Cup

trophy.

Our initial game was against Highlands at the picturesque Bradman

Oval. A solid performance with the ball & in the field, resulting in us

bowling out Highlands for 162. Xavier McDevitt knocking over the

middle order, whom struggled to get him away, & it was only a

couple of lusty blows by the tailenders that got Highlands to a semi-

respectable total. We were always comfortable in the run chase,

with Mitch McCrae batting very well anchoring the innings. A couple

of late wickets as we approached their score making the game look a

little closer than it was.

Unfortunately rain came throughout the region that night washing

out the scheduled final the following day. The final was rescheduled

to the following Sunday & which meant one of the players was

unavailable due to overseas trip & we then lost another the night

prior due to injury.

The final, at North Dalton Park, turned out to be a very close affair.

The Illawarra bowlers kept things tight throughout ultimately restricting South Coast to 196. We were quite

confident, although credit to South Coast as they bowled well & kept picking up wickets to keep the pressure on.

Graeme Batty batted superbly in the final, carrying his bat through the innings & with great support in the middle

order by Pushpinder Singh, to get the win in the final over with 2 balls to spare.

There was a nice bit of sportsmanship on display in the final. Late in the South Coast innings, Rhys Voysey

appeared to take a great diving catch at long off. The batsmen was given out & all at ground thought the catch

had been completed, although Voysey called him back advising the ball had briefly come out of his hands as he’d

hit the ground. It would have been easy to claim the catch but credit to Rhys for the choice he made.

This was a ‘new’ competition for Illawarra that also doubled as a selection trial for the Greater Illawarra team to

participate in the Country Championships. On the back of our performances we ended up with 7 Illawarra players

in that side.

The commitment from the players was good & ultimately reflected in the GIZ selections.

Going forward with the new, larger Greater Illawarra zone it will be important for Illawarra to continue to put

forward it’s best players to maintain its standing in the new zone.

Stuart Bridges – Coach / Manager

Rd 3 Highlands 8/167 (C Maddinson 3/18, N Trebel 3/35) def

Illawarra 2/156 (T Warrington 66no, C Maddinson 38, A Cook 25no)

We ended up as runners-up, although were left to ponder what might have been had weather not caused a

rescheduling of the second days play, which resulted in 7 players from the original squad of 13 being either

injured or unavailable.

The first game was a 50-over affair on 4 Nov, with South Coast winning the toss & electing to bat on a very flat

wicket. Good bowling & fielding contained them to 207 off the full 50 overs. We were always in control

throughout the run chase & despite a couple of late wickets as we neared the total got the runs with 5 overs to

spare. A solid team performance with the bowling honours shared around. The top order of Warrington &

Maddinson getting themselves 60 each. With a measured 30no from Collimore.

The next day’s play was scheduled for 18 Nov, two T20 games, to find the winner. With a full complement of

players available & sitting well placed after the earlier 50 over win. Alas the weather intervened & the games had

to be rescheduled to the following weekend (25 Nov). Unfortunately the change in date meant we encountered 4

players (Collimore/ Hay/Harding/Keyes) that were unavailable due to existing holiday/plans. We then lost another

(Jeffery) midweek due to injury. With 8 players remaining, 4 reserves were drafted into the team, to get us to 12

players for the day. To compound further, during the club games on the Sat prior two of the opening bowlers

(Benn/Trebel) picked up injuries, which left us with 10 fit players & Trebel in slightly reduced capacity. Effectively

Page 20: CI Annual Report - Cricket Illawarracricketillawarra.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/75/files/ci-governance/2018... · Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2018-19 16 | P a g e

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2018-19 19 | P a g e

we’d lost all but one of our first choice bowling line-up & didn’t have the luxury of any extra players to rotate in

the field.

Despite the limited bowling options, we were able to restrict Shoalhaven to 88 off 20 overs, in the 1st T20 game of

the day. Trebel off a reduced run-up picked up 3/12. The run chase was comfortable, getting the total 4 down,

with Debbes carrying his bat.

This meant the last T20 game of the day, effectively became the ‘final’ with Highlands having also won both their

earlier games.

The ‘final’ didn’t start too well with 20 runs off the first over. At one stage it looked like we might be chasing

upwards of 200 & our limited bowling options being tested. The unlikely bowling duo of Sharpe & Maddinson

putting the brakes on a little. With Maddinson even picking up a hat-trick, leaving us to chase 167 (no small task

but on a smallish ground possible).

We finished 2/156 with Warrington carrying his bat & even until the last over were only just a couple of

boundaries away from what would have been a remarkable victory given the player turnover. Highlands deserved

the win as they outplayed us in most aspects during the game, but to get as close as we did was a credit to the

players.

Thanks to the 4 ‘reserve’ players that made themselves to play the two T20’s. Whilst they didn’t get too many

personal opportunities due to the format & limited number to wickets we lost, without their involvement we

wouldn’t have had a team.

Despite being one of the stronger sides, unfortunately we didn’t get a great representation in the Greater

Illawarra Colts team, with only Warrington & Maddinson making the trip to Narrabri. Trebel had to withdraw due

to injury.

With a couple of minor tweaks to the format, I’m sure this competition will provide a good avenue for our local

players to showcase their talents against others in the Greater Illawarra zone & push for higher Colts

representation.

In a year of change and uncertainty Illawarra U14 Red fielded a strong side for the zones new Intra Zone

competition. We were fortunate to have the services of a number of experienced DCA players who had narrowly

Page 23: CI Annual Report - Cricket Illawarracricketillawarra.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/75/files/ci-governance/2018... · Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2018-19 16 | P a g e

Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2018-19 22 | P a g e

missed selection for the Greater Illawarra. Most pleasingly the competition created opportunities for a few to

play their first rep cricket.

The direction for the team was simple. Play positive cricket at all times and enjoy ourselves.

The season started with a bye, then a match up against the younger Illawarra Blue side. In some ways this was

the only match that saw us in trouble with the bat but our depth shone through to give us a very competitive

total and then the bowlers did the job.

Heading into round 3 and the T20 matches was still the unknown of how we would fair against the other

association teams. We swept the T20 matches with some outstanding batting and learnt how quickly a T20 match

can change coming through with the ball in clutch moments. Unfortunately, due to the odd number of teams

there was no T20 award for the team so the focus was back on the 40 over matches to make sure we finished the

season well.

Two clutch matches against South Coast and Highlands stood between the team and the silverware. South Coast

offered little resistance and in lieu of a grand-final, the match against Shoalhaven became the season decider.

When it mattered the team played their best all round game comprehensively defeating Shoalhaven to claim the

title. One game remained against Highlands and while the team mixed things up they were able to remain

unbeaten.

The team was well led by Joel Nolan and Noah King. Joel also did a great job behind the stumps.

Looking at the team stats it is easy to see that everyone contributed. We had five batsman score over 100 runs

and five bowlers take 5 or more wickets.

What became apparent throughout the competition is that we were the only fully top aged side and this was

certainly an advantage for our team. The standard of the cricket was decent but would benefit from being a top

aged competition. Our boys certainly met their goals of playing positive cricket and having a fun time doing it.

Congratulations to Noah King and Joel Nolan whose performance in the competition saw them earn selection for

the Kookaburra Cup. A huge thanks to co-coach Pat Nolan for his calming influence on the side and for supporting

me throughout the campaign.

Well done boys!

The under 12 Illawarra Inter Team where a pleasure to work with this representative season and it was especially

satisfying given nine boys where playing in their first representative cricket team.

We started the season with a firm position on looking for individual development opportunities for each team

member, whilst being conscious that the role the individual played for the team would always trump their

personal achievements or statistics.

Page 26: CI Annual Report - Cricket Illawarracricketillawarra.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/75/files/ci-governance/2018... · Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2018-19 16 | P a g e

We also set a standard that "Respect" would guide our behaviours and how we played the game.

It was a highlight to say that our boys represented the Illawarra with distinction with regards to their Roles and

Standards of Respect.

A couple of highlights for the season were as follows:

the team scoring over 200 runs off 40 overs twice in the competition (226 & 255 runs);

the development of our 11 year old captain Tom King and his co-captains Riley Broadhead and Archie

O’Hara. The boys did an outstanding job and worked well together – particularly with helping their team

mates new to rep cricket;

the development of a player who was selected as a spin bowler and when he was asked to play a different

role for the team, he was more than willing. His ability to ask "what would you like me to do"; "what do I

need to do for the team" was so well done that he played himself into a different role. Ultimately this led

to him getting an opportunity that resulted in him scoring his first ever century – a very special moment

for him. Well done Wyatt Toland your selfless team first approach gave you the chance to show what you

are capable of;

2 batsmen finished in top 5 run scorers for the competition (Archie O’Hara 3rd, Tom King 4th) and a

further 2 boys finished in the top 10 run scorers (Riley Broadhead 6th, Wyatt Toland 9th)

Harrison Deck also finished in the top 10 wicket takers for the competition (10th)

As a whole I was really impressed that every player in the squad showed progression in their development. Liam

Gammone progression from his trial game to being game day top scorer in round 2 was a great example of

confidence first then competence follows. Dominic Batten and Caleb Neich where two standout bowlers of the

competition who created a lot of chances and where unlucky not to find themselves at the top of the stats list at

the competitions end. Hector James and Conner Robbie showed a rate of improvement that seen them step up

into the u12 Lismore Carnival team. And finally, Lachlan Neal and Harrison MacDonald displayed outstanding

character in the way they conducted themselves on and off the field.

Finally, the season was such a pleasurable experience due to the quality parents of the players involved. Thank

you to all their efforts in umpiring; set up; scoring; catering and most of all letting their child make mistakes and

have some fun!

LOCAL SENIOR COMPETITION

In the local senior competition two separate competitions were conducted, Premiership and Twenty 20 played in

4 grades between the 10 affiliated clubs. There were 1205 registered senior role players (1005 last year) across

the 44 teams (46 last year) indicating numbers had increased slightly, although Helensburgh only entered 2 teams

in the two higher grades, while Wollongong fielded 7 & University 8 teams., with one being withdrawn at the

halfway mark of the season.

Competition scheduling, was a lot easier this season with clubs requesting T-20 rounds at the start of season

when clashes with zone rep competitions were held

The Premiership competitions in 1st and 2nd Grades were conducted as a combination of 2-Day cricket and

traditional limited 50-Over formats played across 14 rounds, with a reserve day for the final allocated.

The 3rd Grade Premiership was limited over formats of 45 overs (17 rounds) and 4th Grade was 45 overs (17

rounds), with a reserve day for the finals.

The Twenty20 competitions (20 overs per side) were held over 5 days in 1st Grade with a midweek round

included. The Semi Finals & Finals went off smoothly with Jum Media our new live stream partner. The only

hiccup was a forfeit by Balgownie in a 1st Grade T-20 round.

Whilst there will still forfeits in the season, thankfully they were rare and were much reduced on the previous

season. Only one team dropped out of 4th Grade, that being University Blue at the halfway mark of season

There were a few issues during the season, with Port Kembla stripped of a win due to playing an ineligible player.

Later in the season University were stripped of a win after being found to have breached replacement rules in a

Two Day match.

Administratively, the club match day reporting requirements were much improved on last season, with fewer

fines issued for scorecards not being entered, and the 3 strike Captains reports saving clubs 32 $55 fines.

The T20 semi-finals were hosted at the turf venues of the leading teams in 1st and 3rd grades. All T20 finals

occurred at North Dalton.

The premiership competition generally went well with few weather events compromising play with only 2

Saturdays affected by rain, with a further 3 Saturdays saved with firmer communication with Wollongong City

Council

The premiership finals were scheduled to be held at the traditional best rated venues, however wet weather

interrupted the Semi Finals, and there were venue changes for the finals due to damp grounds

LOCAL JUNIOR COMPETITION

At the completion of the previous season, a small junior format working group was formed – Martin King, Paul

King, Neale Benson (club delegates) & Paul Brockley (NSW Cricket Manager -Illawarra).

Its purpose, scope and objective was to:

Review all current junior operations and formats,

Analyse and compare those to incorporate the new structures within Cricket Australia (CA) Junior Formats

Pathway,

Look to put into place a revamped Illawarra junior cricket format structure moving forward for the next 3

to 5 years,

Recommend and plan changes as needed,

Draft a formal proposal for presentation & consideration by the Clubs.

A few minor tweaks, the Clubs unanimously endorsed the recommendations for the 2018/19 season, which then

necessitated the promotion publicly of the newer formats and a complete rewrite of the local playing conditions

incorporating and following the new staged format requirements and MCC Laws. It was great all clubs got on

board.

The 2018/19 season saw Stage 1 (U11) continuing in two new levels, the roll out of Stage 2 (U12) in two levels

providing a development progression path, while in the older Under 14 and Under 16 age groups, combined

competitions were once again conducted with South Coast Cricket enabling a more viable and appropriate split

between skill levels. Sadly, the push for Girls’ only teams and competitions within the area did not really develop

or progress.

Player and team numbers in each format was pleasing and remained compatible to the previous season;

Under 16B 6

(4x CI, 2x SC) 50 & 20 11 standard

Under 16A 9

In the CA development formats, the Master Blaster program was held in hubs on a club hosting rotational basis

utilising Saturday mornings and Friday evenings, while the younger Junior Blaster program were co-ordinated by

each individual Club.

Overall the season ran fairly smoothly. Before the season commenced in each specific format, a

coach/manager/team information night were held to highlight, explain and emphasise the required concepts and

playing conditions. Not all teams attended resulting in a few initial teething problems while teams adjusted.

During the regular season a few matches were influenced by the weather. Unfortunately, the wet weather hit

dampening the grand finals weekend with matches completely washed out or only a few overs possible,

Page 42: CI Annual Report - Cricket Illawarracricketillawarra.nsw.cricket.com.au/files/75/files/ci-governance/2018... · Cricket Illawarra Incorporated - Annual Report 2018-19 16 | P a g e

frustrating everyone. No major incidents occurred at matches. Thanks to the umpires and club volunteers for

officiating in the finals. Their presence is certainly appreciated by team officials and players.

The annual presentation afternoon was held late March at the Fraternity Club to recognise the achievements of

those teams and players who had most successful seasons. Thanks also to those volunteers who co-ordinated the

function and made presentations to the winning teams and the player’s individual awards.

The junior sub-committee Chair’s position unfortunately, was not or could not be filled. However, in the absence

the junior club delegates rallied, working co-operatively to meet regularly, minute the outcomes and achieved a

fairly successful conducted competition. Those volunteers being;

Summary

The newly rolled out Stage 1 and 2 formats appear to be accepted and worked favourably.

Moving forward, the junior sub-committee & Clubs have a number of matters remaining for consideration. These

include the review of the just completed season (strengths & weaknesses), the introduction next season of the

Stage 3 format in the older age groups (structure required), general playing times (around the changing formats

and the senior competition influence), final series make up (possible additional reserve days for weather) and the

retention and increasing player numbers (both junior cricket – male & female and progressing into grade cricket).

Thanks to all who assisted and dedicated their time and passion. Very much appreciated.

MASTERS COMPETITION

O/50 State Carnival

For the first time Illawarra competed in the Over 50’s State Carnival and entered 2 teams in the event in Orange

over 3 days in February.

Illawarra Red 150 (R Everett 49*, N Kapsimallis 44)

Known as the Illawazziors Red team our brave men were thrown in the deep end of Division One. We were

seeded to meet high quality opposition sides in the first 2 days. Both games were held at the magnificent Wade

Park ground (which had a lightning fast outfield) and our opponents racked up big scores, and we did not. Day 3

was a much more competitive affair in the lovely village of Molong.

Illawarra Blue 109 (D Murphy 34, S Hampasagar 26no, P Nolan 21)

Known as Illawazziors Blue we were placed in Division Two of the Carnival held in Orange. 7 chaps from Illawarra

supplemented by 3 from the ACT plus some daily pickups from the opposition for the full 11. Day 1 was ‘a getting

to know each other’ experience and by the time we had worked that out the Narrabri Grey Slugs had got away on

us. Day 2 was a very close match against a hospitable Port Jackson Grey side in which we achieved a historic

inaugural victory. Richard Ruse hitting the winning run. The celebration of this victory and stiff bodies from the

first 2 days impacted our 3rd day performance against a very good Mudskippers side.
