7 DECADES OF GIVING

The Power of “7 ”

A Message from the Chairman and the President: Seventy years ago, the seven original trustees of The Spartanburg County Foundation met for the first time. They did not have a road map, a strategic plan, community indicators or the technology we have today, but they did have something that has remained a core value of the Foundation since then – they had a desire to make Spartanburg a better place for their children, grandchildren and even generations that they would never know.

Now, 70 years later, we reflect on their selfless generosity, vision, and work ethic and bring those characteristics with us as we discover new and innovative ways to make the Foundation as forward thinking today as it was seven decades ago. Sure, we’re still encouraging philanthropy, investing wisely and John H. Dargan

President & CEORobert E. Gregory, Jr.Chairman of the Board

making grants to help those in need, but The Spartanburg County Foundation continues to embrace its leadership role in the community

in the areas of nonprofit capacity building, community assessment and goal

setting, and individual empowerment.

The 2012 Annual Report takes a look back at the Foundation’s distinguished past, but it also gives you a glimpse at the future

we’re working to build one donor, one grant, one opportunity, one

program, one trustee, one idea, and one generation at a time. Now that’s the power of

seven at work today.Sincerely,

Nelly and Kurt Zimmerli grew up in Switzerland in families that believed in giving.

“Our families had very little means, but they gave what they could and always impressed upon Nelly and me that you can’t just take,” says Mr. Zimmerli.

Years later the Zimmerlis came to Spartanburg and soon felt welcomed and at home. They started giving immediately, partly out of gratitude to the community and partly because of the sheer pleasure of giving.

“Giving is great for the people who receive, but it’s also great for the people who can see what their money can do,” says Mr. Zimmerli. “It makes Nelly and me feel good to drive by the library and see the landscaping and sculptures or by Barnet Park and see the interactive fountain with dozens of children playing in the water. Both were early investments in the community by the Zimmerli Foundation.”

The Zimmerli Foundation became the first supporting organization of The Spartanburg County Foundation in 1994. They chose the Foundation to manage their money because during his tenure as a trustee, Kurt saw first hand the efficiency of The Spartanburg County Foundation and the trust they inspired in the community. Others now have followed the Zimmerli’s example, including their children, Mark and Kathy, and Spartanburg is a better place because the Zimmerlis made it their home.

A POWERFUL EXAMPLEZIMMERLI FAMILY DEMONSTRATES THE POWER OF GIVING

“We like continuity and like to know that our money is doing a lot of good. Both the Zimmerli Foundation and our charitable remainder trust are managed by The Spartanburg County Foundation, which will ensure that we continue to make grants for years to come.”

Friends, students and colleagues affectionately called him “Fess,” short for professor, an appropriate title considering R. P. Dawkins and his love of children and education.

In 1939 with a newly-minted South Carolina State University diploma in hand, Dawkins came to Spartanburg to teach. He served as principal and agricultural teacher in Spartanburg School District Six for more than 30 years. During that time Dawkins and his wife, Hillard, a teacher and librarian in District 6, informally helped generations of students go to college.

When Mrs. Dawkins passed away, Mr. Dawkins and friends established the Hillard H. Dawkins Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Foundation in 1992. Four years later, Dawkins established the R. P. Dawkins Scholarship Fund, also at The Spartanburg County Foundation.

“Every year the Foundation would send him an annuity check with money that he had earned on his investment. He never cashed them. Instead, he sent them back to be reinvested in the fund,” says Donna Mayes, Dawkins’s former student, caregiver and a teacher at Dorman High School. “Fess loved knowing that he was helping children get an education.”

Originally the scholarship went to one student, but by reinvesting the dividends, Dawkins now helps two students each year with educational expenses. The Spartanburg County Foundation will continue to invest Dawkins’s gift wisely, and that scholarship will grow and help generations of deserving children.

“Although he was a man of very few words, his actions spoke boldly. I hope his legacy always continues.”

Lucy Grier was known for her humility, both as a philanthropist and community volunteer.

“She led by example,” says son Jim Grier, who along with his sisters, Charlotte Gee and Mary Wheless, now plans to honor their mother’s memory by continuing to give back to the community. Mrs. Grier made that possible by establishing the Lucy Harper Grier Family Fund in 1988, then adding to it in 2012 with her estate.

“She was very giving,” says daughter, Mary. “After she became blind, I would come into town and read her mail to her.” Mary would read her letters from non-profit organizations asking for support. “She wouldn’t say no,” says Mary, “not to any of them.”

According to Charlotte, both education and the arts were important to her mother. Throughout her life, Mrs. Grier supported her alma mater, Salem College; the historic preservation of Walnut Grove plantation; the Chapman Cultural Center and The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Citizen Scholars Program.

After attending the Citizen Scholars banquet this past year, the family has decided to use the investment income from the Lucy Harper Grier Benevolent Foundation to ensure that Citizen Scholars continue to have the opportunity to earn a college degree and start a future.

“She was always volunteering in the community. She taught us to appreciate our community and to serve in whatever ways we could.”

1946 After Walter Montgomery founded The Spartanburg County Foundation in 1943 with a $10,000 gift, Foundation trustees commissioned three surveys of Spartanburg General Hospital and its facilities. Throughout the years, the Foundation has supported health initiatives in the Spartanburg community, and today, thanks in part to those early surveys, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System is one of the top medical care systems in the country. During this time, the Foundation also supported a survey of library facilities. Now, the Spartanburg County Public Library system boasts a beautiful downtown headquarters facility and nine branches throughout the county.

1946 The Foundation awarded its first college scholarships – one to a Wofford College student and one to a Converse College student. Today, the Foundation manages more than $16.5 million in scholarship funds, awarding more than 500 scholarships during 2012. The Foundation also supports a thriving Citizen Scholars mentoring and scholarship program that helps at-risk youth finish high school and attend college.

1948 The Georgia Cleveland Memorial Fund was established at the Foundation in 1948 to offer assistance to elderly ladies in the Georgia Cleveland Home. Although the home is now the site of St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic, the fund remains active and provides comfort and care to Spartanburg’s aging population.

1951 During the 1950s, the Foundation adopted several symbols to help the Spartanburg community understand the role of the Foundation and its potential to affect change. The reservoir symbol illustrated how “impounded contributions, small and large, in the Reservoir of Benevolent Funds flow into the channels of county needs through the gates of Education, Health, Recreation and Welfare.”

Community foundations across the country followed the Foundation’s lead and began using the reservoir symbol as well. With the Reservoir of Benevolent Funds as its cover, the Book of Memory also became an important part of the history of the Foundation. On permanent display in the Foundation offices, it still allows individuals to make gifts to the Foundation’s general fund, now called the Community Fund, in memory of a loved one. More than 1,700 names are inscribed in the Book of Memory.

1954 Through the Bible Fund, the Foundation started awarding Bibles to every high school graduate in Spartanburg County. The Foundation also presented valedictorian medals to the top student in each graduating class. Today the Foundation still awards a bowl to the valedictorians of each high school in Spartanburg County .

1961 Lena Heath Jones Craig and Thomas Moore Craig transferred 7.63 acres of property, including the Walnut Grove Manor House and Cemetery, to the Foundation to be held in trust for the Spartanburg County Historical Association. The Craig’s children, Susan Heath Craig Murphy and Thomas Moore Craig Jr., have since added to the endowment by donating property, resources and leadership. Walnut Grove Plantation now sits on almost 60 acres and is a national treasure preserved to share the stories of free and enslaved people who

settled South Carolina, fought for freedom from Great Britain and built a new nation.

1973 The Spartanburg County Foundation provided a $10,000 grant to establish The Girls Home, eventually named for Ellen Hines Smith. Since then, more than 2,000 teenage girls in the Spartanburg community have found shelter and a safe, home-like environment. In 2013, the Girls Home merged with the

Children’s Shelter of the Upstate to form the Hope Center for Children. The new center

offers a broader continuum of services for children and families.

1971 The Foundation funded a preliminary survey and study of the downtown Spartanburg area. Like many communities, Spartanburg was changing. Population inside the city declined and neighborhoods followed suit. Poverty took over the inner city while plans were in the works for the development of Westgate Mall. The Foun-dation was at the forefront of assessment and revitalization discussions then and continues to strengthen neighborhood voices and build capacity for non-profit organizations serving the ever-changing demographics of the Spartanburg community.

1986 Josephine and Harold Hatcher gave their home and garden to The Spartanburg County Foundation to ensure that Spartanburg residents always would be able to enjoy the property they painstakingly cleaned up, cared for and developed. A year later they established the Hatcher Botanical Garden Endowment with their lifelong savings to offset the operating costs of Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve. Since then the Foundation has used its knowledge and resources to help the public garden obtain non-profit status, develop its first board of directors, leverage additional funding, foster partnerships and equip staff to best honor the legacy of the Hatchers.

1989 Trustee John Wardlaw proposed that the Foundation commission a comprehensive study of Spartanburg County comparing it with surrounding counties, the state and the nation. The report measured a variety of indicators in the areas of education, health, economics, crime and family. From that first

document, the Spartanburg County Community Indicators Project was born, and now raises awareness and drives

funding priorities not just for the Foundation, but also for other local funders. Partnering with the Foundation

on the community assessment, evaluation and strategic planning project are United Way of the Piedmont, Spartanburg County Government and the University of South Carolina Upstate Metropolitan Studies Institute. The Spartanburg County Indicators Project is recognized as a national best practice.

1994 The Foundation helped bring the Carolina Panthers to Spartanburg by making a $150,000 gift to the construction of the Richardson Physical Activities Building at Wofford College, one of the incentives needed to bring the NFL team to Spartanburg each summer. The economic impact of that decision has been immense. More than 44,000 people attended the 2012 training camp; 35 percent of those were from beyond 50 miles away. They spent almost $2 million during their visit to Spartanburg.

1999 Trustees gave the single largest grant in the history of the Foundation – $1,050,000 to fund the Extended Day Academic Program in the seven school districts in the county. The program was designed to demonstrate that the trend for poor student achievement could be reversed and that all students could master high academic standards if they were given time, support and instruction that focused on their academic needs. The program served more than 1,900 students, with more than a third improving standardized test scores from 2001 to 2002.

1995 Following the tragic death of community leader and volunteer Ernest Rice, the Foundation convened concerned citizens to discuss ways to decrease violence and crime in the community. Those meetings led to the establishment of the Stop the Violence Coalition, which helped community organizations build democratic and inclusive neighborhood associations. The work increased neighborhood solidarity and attachment and reduced violent crimes by more than 50 percent in both Una and Northside.

2004 The Foundation developed the Grassroots Leadership Development Institute out of the Strengthening Voices Initiative. The intense seven-month leadership program has now graduated more than 200 individuals who serve the community in various leadership roles. Also in 2004, the Foundation partnered with Clemson University on a seven-year project that awarded capacity-building grants to local faith and community-based organizations. The partner-ship leveraged more than $1,050,000 in grants and techncal assistance for non-profits in the community.

2006 The Foundation made a $1,000,000 leadership gift to support the new Chapman Cultural Center, an 86,000-square-foot facility where the community can discover, experience and celebrate the arts, sciences and regional history. More than 200,000 people each year visit the Chapman Cultural Center.

After receiving the Robert W. Scrivner Award for Creative Grantmaking from the Council on Foundations and a $10,000 cash award in 2006, Mary L. Thomas invested the award back into her community by establishing the Mary L. Thomas Award for Civic Leadership and Community Change Fund. With the community’s help, the fund soared past its original goal of $100,000. Each year the award is presented to an individual who, like Mary, serves as a community leader, innovator and contributor to community change.

2010 Contec, an international company based in Spartanburg that develops and manufactures innovative cleaning products for use in critical environments, established a Donor Advised Fund with the Foundation to support quality of life issues in Spartanburg County. The Contec, Inc. Charitable Fund recently presented a $10,000 check to the Universal Body of Christ Church in Spartanburg for the Barbara Fowler Memorial Health Challenge. Fowler was a Contec employee who died suddenly of a massive heart attack. Contec is one of six local companies who have established funds at the Foundation. These funds total $1,500,000 and produce $100,000 in grants each year.

2008 From 2008 to 2010, the Foundation convened hundreds of community leaders and educational experts and served as a catalyst in the implementation and cultivation of The 40/30 Challenge, which aims to increase baccalaureate degree attainment. As a direct result of the Foundation’s leadership and guidance, The College Hub was established in 2010 with a $500,000 lead challenge grant from the Foundation.

2007 The Foundation established its first giving circle, Women Giving for Spartanburg. With 264 women now collectively investing in Spartanburg, the community has benefited from $1.2 million in grants to non-profit organizations in Spartanburg County.
