THE SPARTANBURG COUNTY FOUNDATION

At the Crossroads of Tradition and InnovationA Message from the Chairman and the President

The Spartanburg County Foundation stands at the crossroads of tradition and innovation.

That does not mean we choose to abandon heritage for the sake of progress or to rest on

our laurels as we let opportunities for growth and improvement slip away. Instead, it means

that we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us as we look for new ways

to improve ourselves so that we can be the capacity builder, collaborator, grantmaker, and

knowledge source that our community needs and expects us to be.

The 2013 Annual Report celebrates our Foundation’s place at the crossroads of tradition

and innovation by looking at some of the donors, organizations, and initiatives that have

made an impressive impact on our community

during the past year. In this report, we also thank the

many people who continue to make contributions

to the Foundation — our leadership team, financial

supporters, staff, and volunteers. With your help,

we look forward to an even brighter and more

vibrant 2014 where tradition and innovation meet.

When John Wardlaw was a Trustee of The Spartanburg County Foundation, he shared the idea of a “critical indicators” project to measure community improvement and compare Spartanburg to other areas of the state and nation. Known today as the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project, Wardlaw’s vision is now a national best practice for community assessment, and the Foundation and other funders now use it to determine need and fund projects geared toward community improvement.

Wardlaw analyzed the data collected in those first indicator reports and discovered a discrepancy between enrollment in adult education programs and the high school drop out rate. He decided to help close the knowledge gap, and with the support of The Spartanburg County Foundation, started a program to help people in the community earn their GED.

Now at 90 years old, Wardlaw is thinking outside the box yet again with the “Why Not”

Fund, which was established in 2013 at The Spartanburg County Foundation.

“This will be a permanent fund at the Foundation that will be used for innovative projects to address the problems of poverty and under-education in our community,” said Wardlaw, who has already established other funds at the Foundation and was looking for an opportunity to create a fund that would continue to give back to the community as needs changed.

According to Wardlaw, the fund’s advisors will be the presidents and CEOs of The Spartanburg County Foundation, Mary Black Foundation, and United Way of the Piedmont.

“John Wardlaw is a visionary community servant,” said John Dargan, retired president and CEO of The Spartanburg County Foundation. “Thanks to his generosity and forward thinking, when someone in our community poses the question, ‘why not,’ there will be resources available to respond to innovative ideas to alleviate poverty and under-education.”

Celebrating 10 Years of Investing into Grassroots Leaders

In 2011, Wanda Cheeks and hundreds of other volunteers built a playground with Michelle Obama in Washington, DC. She also secured national funding from KaBOOM! to renovate two Spartanburg parks and build a playground at the Spartanburg Charter School. Her efforts to improve the parks and playgrounds have led to national recognition for Spartanburg as a Playful City USA, and it’s all thanks to the tools she gained from The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Grassroots Leadership Development Institute (GLDI).

“The Institute helped me learn about strategic planning. It helped me see all sides of an issue,” said Cheeks, who graduated from GLDI in 2007 and now works as a recreation specialist with the City of Spartanburg. “Because of GLDI, I understand where I fit in and how to work together with a team to get more done.”

In 2013, GLDI, an intense, seven-month

leadership training program designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skill-set and resources to be effective in leading change at the grassroots level, graduated its 10th class. A priority for moving forward has been a seven-year partnership with the City of Spartanburg and the revitalization of the group’s Alumni Association. Graduates can become members of the Grassroots Leadership Alumni Association, which allows them to stay connected to other grassroots community leaders and work collectively to meet the needs of the people in their own backyards. More than 225 individuals have graduated from the program and are serving the community in a variety of ways.

“The Alumni Association helps keep us motivated and stay true to our mission of helping the community,” said Cheeks. “We encourage each other to stay involved and work together for the improvement of Spartanburg County.”

Sheryl and Russell Booker Establish Family Fund as a Legacy for Their Children

Dr. Russell and Sheryl Booker teach their children about giving. For example, when Grant or Maxwell receive money for birthdays or Christmas, their parents have taught them to give a portion to the church and their savings account. This year, the Bookers took those lessons in giving a step further with the establishment of the Russell and Sheryl Booker Family Fund. “When Sheryl and I are long gone, the Fund will allow our children to continue giving,” said Russell.

“It’s our legacy to them,” added Sheryl.

The Bookers chose to open a donor advised fund with The Spartanburg County Foundation because they can continue to support the community

organizations closest to their hearts such as — Wingate University (Russell’s alma mater), United Way of the Piedmont, Women Giving for Spartanburg, First Tee of Spartanburg, and the Spartanburg District 7 Foundation — while getting a good return on their investment. Working with the Foundation is also easy. They can manage their charitable giving from their personal computers.

“It’s also a good way to support the Foundation,” said Russell. “I’ve always been impressed as I think about the people who have made gifts to the District’s Foundation through their funds at The Spartanburg County Foundation. I know with the Foundation’s management, our family fund will continue to grow and grow so we can use it to support our community.”

“I have a lot of respect for The Spartanburg County Foundation for what they do throughout the county. They’re a great partner – not just for our schools, but for the whole community.” – Dr. Russell Booker, Superintendent, Spartanburg County School District Seven

Donor Connect Puts People in Touch with Community Needs

Doug Nash has attended several Donor Connect sessions over the past few years, but he says the tour of the Northside last year stands out.

“The children at Cleveland Academy of Leadership were very impressive in their uniforms and in how well they presented the Principles of Leadership,” said Nash, who has visited the Academy several times since then. “When I learned that they were adding 4K last fall, Maxine and I decided to provide funding for their uniforms. If I had not attended that Donor Connect session, we would not have known of the need.”

Nash’s experience is one that has played out over and over since the Foundation began offering Donor Connect sessions that provide education,

networking, and collective grantmaking opportunities for people who hold one of the 137 donor advised funds managed by the Foundation. During the past three years, the Foundation has leveraged $280,300 through Donor Connect, which included $125,000 to the Northside Initiative.

“Our donors at The Spartanburg County Foundation have responded so well to the Northside Initiative,” said Mary Thomas, chief operating officer of The Spartanburg County Foundation. “By bringing them in on the Northside’s revitalization, we’re giving them the opportunity to work with a larger group to change our city’s landscape for the better. That’s collective thinking, collective impact, and giving at its best.”

Carolina Foothills Artisan Center Agency Fund Created to Provide Sustainability

Laura Ballenger, executive director of the Carolina Foothills Artisan Center, loves to spend an afternoon writing checks to artists — the more checks, the better. It shows that people are visiting the Center, a partner organization of the Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg, and more importantly, buying the works of the nearly 100 member-artisans.

When donations and sales are up, the Center, which is located in Chesnee, SC, has the funds to cover their utilities, staffing, and operational expenses. Economic down swings, however, were having an adverse affect on the Center’s organizational services and sustainability. That’s when Ballenger talked with a board member about the problem, and the two came up with a solution.

“We’ve established an agency endowment fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation thanks to a forward-thinking donor who offered us $50,000 to open an emergency fund if we can match it,” said Ballenger.

Ballenger says that the Fund will provide a safety net and allow the Carolina Foothills Artisan Center to operate from a position of strength. During an economic depression or a month of off sales and donations, the Center can use the Fund’s interest as a reserve. The Carolina Foothills Artisan Center is also moving its scholarship fund, given each year to a Chesnee High School senior planning to study art in college, to the Foundation for management.

Nonprofit Connect and Healthy Organization Institute Build Capacity for Those on the Front Lines of

Community ServiceIn August 2013, Jennifer Evins, trustee emerita of The Spartanburg County Foundation and the president and CEO of The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg, came to The Spartanburg County Foundation to share tips on effective use of staff and volunteers to develop financial resources. Twenty-eight nonprofit leaders attended the lunch and learn session, part of the Foundation’s Nonprofit Connect program designed to build the capacity of the nonprofits on the front lines of community service.

It’s a role that the Foundation has embraced as a way of magnifying its impact on community service. More than 250 nonprofit leaders and board members attended the educational sessions held last year.

“I always leave the Nonprofit Connect sessions with an idea for how to improve the capacity or services at the Adult Learning Center (ALC),” said Bill Brasington, director of the ALC.

The Healthy Organization Institute (HOI) provides another opportunity for nonprofits to increase their capacity.

“As a new executive director, Nonprofit Connect has allowed me to expand my knowledge regarding some of the administrative skills needed to be a director.” – Caroline Sexton, Executive Director, Spartanburg County Historical Association

During 2013, The Spartanburg County Fo u n d at i o n , Ma r y B l a c k Fo u n d at i o n , Spartanburg Regional Foundation, United Way of the Piedmont, and the University of South Carolina Upstate’s George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics, completed the planning and development of the HOI, a five-month, comprehensive, best practices training program designed to improve the capacity and effectiveness of nonprofit organizations in Spartanburg County. Created for nonprofit executive directors and board chairs, the Institute incorporates peer learning, classroom instruction, and creative problem solving to allow leaders to take back to their organizations solid, practical concepts and build them into the framework of their organizations.

According to Brasington, a participant in the pilot program that launched in January 2014, “The Healthy Organization Institute has the added benefit of bringing board members to the table. Fred Herren, the vice chair of the ALC’s Board of Directors, and I are learning together, and that’s been a real boost both personally and professionally.”

Scholarship Fund Allows More Students the Opportunity to Develop a Heart for Christ and a Mind for Learning

An anonymous donor wanted more people in the world who are well-educated and equipped with a Biblical worldview, and as a means to achieve that, decided to make a generous contribution to Spartanburg Christian Academy (SCA). Spartanburg Christian Academy used that donation to establish a scholarship fund in 2013 with The Spartanburg County Foundation to meet the goals of the donor and benefit students for generations to come.

“The Fund helps us offer more families the opportunity of a Christian education,” said SCA Headmaster Rob McDonald. “Because the Fund is held at The Spartanburg County Foundation, we hope people will also see this as another avenue to give.”

Spartanburg Christian Academy teaches 443 students in grades 3K through 12th grade. They

enjoy a 100 percent graduation rate, and their graduates have been accepted to more than 40 colleges and universities across the country. They also boast an 85 percent pass rate on advanced placement exams.

“We’re not just church trying to do school,” said McDonald. “We’re a rigorous academic institution that furthers a Biblical worldview.”

Derrick Hackle, a student who will be graduating this year in a class of 34, has been accepted into Clemson University’s Bridge Program. “We keep each other accountable because we have the same belief system and Christian background,” said Hackle. “We’re a close community, and I’m glad more people will have the opportunity to attend because of the scholarship fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation.”

“Opening a fund with The Spartanburg County Foundation has been a great decision. They have been very hospitable, easy to work with, and accessible.” – Rob McDonald, Headmaster, Spartanburg Christian Academy

Foundation Extends Impact on Educational Achievement

In 2008, a Chamber of Commerce study examined the connection between economic development and educational attainment in Spartanburg County. At that time, 19.2 percent of adults held bachelors degrees. Communities with dynamic economies boasted rates above 40 percent.

“We were not in the game,” said Dr. John Stockwell, distinguished chancellor emeritus of the University of South Carolina Upstate, executive director of the Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM), and trustee of The Spartanburg County Foundation.

Although there was little question of the need, finding support in the midst of an economic depression was a challenge, until The Spartanburg County Foundation stepped forward to establish The College Hub, a nonprofit charged with addressing the problem by doubling the percent of degree holders to 40 percent by 2030.

According to Stockwell, the Foundation’s $500,000 lead gift helped The College Hub leverage an

“I believe that education is the most important responsibility we have for the next generation.” – Bill Barnet, Trustee Emeritus

additional $500,000 to begin its work of encouraging more Spartanburg County residents to go to college. By 2012, however, College Hub leaders realized that to meet the goal, academic achievement must advance from kindergarten forward.

“We’re no longer just ‘college’, and no longer a ‘hub’, but a ‘movement’ — the Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM) — setting targets for achievement from cradle to career, and forming networks of nonprofit and educational practitioners at every stage of learning to reach these targets,” said Stockwell.

In addition to its “big picture” work with SAM, the Foundation manages 230 scholarship funds, supports the Citizen Scholars Program to provide mentoring and scholarship opportunities for children who have exhibited academic potential and a strong desire to further their education, and offers scholarships each year to Spartanburg County high school graduates attending local colleges and universities.

In February, Troy M. Hanna became the sixth president and CEO of The Spartanburg County Foundation.

Prior to joining the Foundation, Hanna served as vice president and private client relationship manager for TD Wealth. He has served on the boards of a variety of community organizations, including SAFE Homes-Rape Crisis Coalition, The Arts Partnerships of Greater Spartanburg, the University of South Carolina Upstate Foundation, and Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve, to name a few. Additionally, in 2009, the United Way of the Piedmont recognized him with their Walter S. Montgomery Award for Young Leadership. He and his wife, Cecilia, have two children, Lillian and Mac.

“I have complete confidence in Troy’s leadership,” said John Dargan, retired president and CEO of The Spartanburg County Foundation. “I know without a doubt that the Foundation’s best years are yet to come.”

“I am strongly committed to this community; my wife, Cecilia, and I have chosen to raise our children here, and I have a vested interest in the success of Spartanburg County. I am thankful for this opportunity to impact the future of our community, and I look forward to serving as a president and CEO of The Spartanburg County Foundation.”– Troy Hanna
