I’m writing this letter at the beginning of March on a dreary grey day. The garden has looked drab for some weeks but now a faint promise of something different is emerging. The first snowdrops have bloomed and other spring flowers are gradually joining them. On the trees the buds are swelling and there’s a green hue beginning to appear. A female robin has joined the male and the birds are frantically building nests. It’s one of the best times of the year. The air is full of promise and like Kenneth Graham’s character, the Mole, we want to leave the gloom of winter behind. So let’s say ‘ hang whitewash’ as Mole did and rejoice in the coming Spring. Before us is the promise of new life with all the glory of God’s beautiful world about to break forth. The Christian year is unfolding in much the same way. We’ve entered now the period of Lent which is a solemn time when we try to examine our lives and decide what changes could affect them for the better. We remember the wonderful ministry of Jesus. We recognise the teaching which is as relevant to our lives today as it was 2,000 years ago. We’re amazed by the wonderful stories of his great healing ministry. But most of all as we come to Easter we give thanks that he was prepared to give his life for us and to undergo the suffering of the cross for our redemption. On Easter Day we experience the joy of the resurrection which fulfilled the promise he made to his disciples along with the assurance that he goes to prepare a place for us when our time on earth is done – a place in God’s heavenly kingdom. New life is all around us in this great and wonderful world that God created for us. Let us all enjoy it to the full.

Heads Up!

Baydon St. Nicholas CE Primary School Report It’s been a busy Spring Term for Baydon school with lots of social events being organised in aid of the school building fund. We had a very success-ful Launch evening with excellent attendance by the school and village communities alike. Snow disrupted the school during the early part of February like many others in the County. However due to the hard work and resourcefulness of the community we were able to reopen once we were “dug out”. Our thanks go to those who answered our call to bring a shovel on a Sunday afternoon to dig pathways to the classrooms. This was greatly appreci-ated. Thank you to all. We took 33 Years 5 and 6 children to Braeside Education Centre in Devizes in February after our initial visit had to be cancelled because of snow. They had a successful and enjoyable three day residential visit undertaking town trails around Devizes, exploring Devizes castle and pond dipping along the canal. They were a real credit to the School. There is a quiz night in school this Friday (27th March), a Barn Dance in July, and many, many other events coming up. Please keep an eye open for publicity notices! The school disco, and dress up in red event for Red Nose Day raised a staggering £167 for Comic Relief. Thank you to everyone who helped with Bags2School – this is always a very successful fundraiser, and there is another one planned for the summer months. As usual we are collecting the following tokens:

BAYDON SCHOOL – BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

For several years we have been using every corner of our school building & even teaching some children in the corridors. Storage space is at a premium and the building stretched to its limits with the introduction of after-school clubs and wrap around care. The governing body has been exploring possible solutions and decided to expand what we already have; bigger classrooms with more storage, offices at the entrance to the new frontal and several other improvements. On 26 February a well attended Launch Evening was held in the hall for parents and villagers, plans were on display, a clever 3D effect of the interior shown on a laptop and the ideas and financing explained by Governors and the Diocesan Surveyor. Baydon St Nicholas’ School began in the Victorian era, the growth of the village led to the 1960’s extension and we now propose to develop further, combining the earlier buildings with the new thus providing a school and community building to fulfill the demands of the curriculum and the technology of the 21st century. Baydon School Needs You!

The works will improve the teaching space, make the school aesthetically more in tune with the main Victorian building and give pupils a safer, more sustainable learning environment. Starfish Appeal Update As so many of you have been involved in raising money for the Starfish

Appeal we thought you’d like to know about how the money was spent.

On 16th march we went to Kings College Hospital for the opening of the Rays of Sunshine Paediatric Liver Ward. Rosie and Lottie have made a display which Debbie has put in the shop window.

The facilities have been completely updated. They have installed the most up to date air filtration system for when the children are in isolation, there are taps you don’t have to touch to turn them on! Small details like the art work which carries the theme of a small stream running into a river and then the sea at the end of the ward when the children are recovered enough to go home. They have designed a lovely play area which is at one end of the ward so the children can make a bit of noise without disturbing others and also so it is somewhere they have to walk , which is good for recovery. Each of the beds have wifi, playstation & a webcam which is so good for children to be able to stay in touch with family & friends especially because Kings is a supra regional centre for paediatric liver and children are often far from home and siblings. It also means they can stay in touch with school, being able to keep up with the work and to feel engaged is really important when you are in hospital for a long time. There is also a proper reception area at the front of the ward so families and children can be met and made to feel more at ease as soon as they arrive. We know how difficult that first entry into the ward can be so we were especially pleased to see that.

It feels like a completely new and world class unit now and it will feel so different to be a patient or a relative there. Rosie and Lottie both felt that it would be ok to be there (if you had to!) and we certainly felt that the facilities for parents were so improved as to be unrecognisable. There are pull down beds in the rooms and a pleasant fully equipped parents’ sitting room and kitchen. It was also good to see an area made available in the treatment room for parents to learn about making up their children’s medicines for when they go home. All of these touches are the things which are making a difference now and will make a difference to us as a family and we thank you so much for your contribution to that.

Parish Council Corner An exciting night at the Parish Council!.. Editor hadn’t attended before - through all of the usual excuses and, to be frank, fear of boredom. But recently, I’d sensed that the PC were really trying to get to grips with some of the issues that had been kicking about for - well - let’s face it - years. And, you know what? I think they are. Their hands are tied on the allotment issue because without the councillors who have an interest, there isn’t a voting quorum so they can’t legally do anything until they get more coun-cillors. They co-opted a new Councillor last night which is great news but they need a couple more. The other big issue they’re dealing with at the moment is where to situate the children’s playground. All of the sites have strengths and weaknesses so it was decided last night to have a village referendum to be held at the Annual Village Meeting on 24th April. It looks as if the options are: The cricket field The Parish field The ‘Pond’ site (which is currently common land so

would need oodles of legalities resolving first) The BYPA area Land donated by or rented from a local landowner (unidentified as

yet) If you’re in any way interested in this issue - get to the Village Meeting on the 24th, munch some cheese and quaff some wine and have your say. I can’t fit everything I’d like to say about the meeting last night into this space - like how deep the new Council has to dig before they get to the bottom of what’s been going on in the PC for some years. Great British Fish and Chip Supper – Friday 15th May 2009

Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 15th May 2009 whilst raising aware-ness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s information and support services. SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes.

The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to lead independent lives.

Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone. 10 members met in a classroom at St. Nicholas School in February for a fascinating talk by Mrs Verna Clifford entitled Guide Dogs and More. She was accompanied by her own guide dog, Wheat. The “More” element turned out to be a vast array of talking technical equip-ment that Mrs Clifford used to help her. Many members were unable to attend because of the snow cov-ered pavements and roads, but it was agreed that the new venue was a great improvement on the BYPA Hall. It was therefore agreed to hold meetings in the school hall in future. The Annual meeting was held in March at the School Hall. In her final address Mrs Sheila McCleery said that she was pleased to have achieved the two targets she had set herself 3 years ago; firstly to raise the membership numbers and secondly to raise funds. She was pleased to announce that the Institute now had 21 members and a very healthy budget. The committee agreed to stand again, and Mrs Penny Stephens was voted in as president.

BAYDON THURSDAY CLUB Our first meeting in February had to be cancelled, due to the very snowy weather, but on February l9th, Mr. Andrew Hill, a hypnotherapist, from Swindon, came to give us a talk. He explained the difference between a Hypnotist and a Hypno-therapist - often confused apparently - Mr. Hill`s work is helping patients cope with stress. And he is currently treating several patients in the Swindon area who have recently been made redundant. On March 5th, our speakers were two Chiropractors - also from Swindon - who explained how almost every movement we make emanates from the spine, which is why a back problem can often affect other areas. The second March meeting took the form of an excellent Quiz, which really had us using our `little grey cells’ to their full ca-pacity! We are now looking forward to our first outing of the year - which will be Lunch at `The Cross Keys`` at Wanborough. Peggy Slater

This is an Editor’s own recipe. I’m one of those cooks that likes simplicity. This is a family favourite - probably THE family favourite. I have no idea where I gleaned it from - seem to have had it for years! You just get everything ready and suzz it in the food processor. Just delicious served with a thai rice and you can add all sorts of things like green peppers or spinach to make it even healthier! Or even use quorn instead of chicken. It’s even more scrumptious if you prepare it the day before and let the chicken sit in the sauce in the fridge. Serves about 4 folk

Thai Green Curry 200 grammes creamed coconut ½ pint boiling water 3-4 cloves of garlic 2-3 fresh green chillies 1-2 level teaspoons ground ginger 3 tablespoons light soy sauce 1-2 limes - zest and juice 2 level tablespoons caster sugar 1 pack fresh coriander 4 chicken breasts

Dissolve the creamed coconut in the boiling water Peel garlic and cut chillies in half and scoop out the seeds Prepare the lime juice and zest Bung everything except for the chicken into the food

processor Suzz until reasonably smooth Pour onto the chicken breasts and pop into the fridge to

marinate When you’re ready to eat, take the chicken breast out

and grill or fry it Add the chicken to the sauce in a frying pan or wok and

heat through 

And now for something really scrumptious!..

Comment Where anyone can have a rant about (almost) anything that’s relevant to Baydon...

There’s Snow Baydon like Snow Baydon Remember just a few weeks ago when we had nearly two feet of snow? Hard to believe now as I look out at the sun but for a brief moment, it changed Baydon - and not just aesthetically. First - my rant! Is it because we’re right at the very tip of Wiltshire’s parameters that we seem to have no (or at least the very bare mini-mum) of road clearance? This is a rhetorical question. The road towards Swindon over Peak's Down was impassable in the snow - an ambulance was even unable to get through to collect a Baydon lad who had broken his arm so he had to be taken down to meet the ambulance by four wheel drive! But if you managed to get out of the village to the motorway bridge - hey presto! - you’re in Berkshire where they appear to have gritting lorries and snow ploughs and the road was rela-tively clear. Several residents took matters into their own hands and cleared the road at the end of Downsmead on the Friday afternoon. Until then, neighbours had had to help dig cars off driveways

and push them down the snow covered roads. You couldn’t get out of Manor Lane for days on end and the grit bins at both ends were empty after the first fall and weren’t refilled.

St John's School in Marlborough was closed for 7 days as snow from the approach to the school wasn’t cleared by the Council so it was deemed unsafe for the children to attend. But, you know what? In many ways, it bought the villagers together. Debbie and co in the shop provided a sterling service through-out - managing to collect newspapers from Aldbourne and keep stocks of milk and fruit and veg replenished. They had a bit of drama when the awning to the shop collapsed under the weight of snow! The local school was closed for only 4½ days from Monday lunchtime - Peter Chambers, the headmaster monitored the situation on a daily basis to keep parents informed and was often seen brushing and shovelling to try to keep it clear. Snowmen sprang up all over the Baydon with some spectacu-larly large specimens in the front gardens of Fiveways and various other places around the village - and kids of all ages enjoyed sledging down the hill above Eastleaze Farm on the edge of Baydon.

And in some ways, at least for me, it was just lovely to have enforced time at home. I was able to trudge around the village with my husband and chat to neighbours without feeling the need to rush off to get on with normal life. Snow joke.

Awards Two Baydon Childminders, Amanda Dore and Alison Jones both received an award in recognition of their valuable contribution and commitment to quality improvement in early years child care. Amanda and Alison were each pre-sented with a glass plaque by Stephanie Denovan, Assistant Director Schools Branch, Wiltshire County Council. The presentation evening was held last week at The Guildhall, Salisbury And Amanda is running the Race for Life on 12th July 2009 at Newbury for a friend who has recently undergone treatment for cancer and in memory of her mother-in-law, Betty and her Godfather Peter.
