The festival of Pentecost (also known as Whitsun),which we celebrated towards the end of May,reminds us of the coming of God’s Spirit, turning ahuddle of terrified men and women, hiding behindlocked doors after Jesus’ crucifixion, into people who seemed to be afraid of nothing, asthey bore witness to the truth they had encountered: to the impact that the risen Jesushad had on their lives, and the strength that he could give them if they trusted him.The following Sunday was “Trinity Sunday”. Why’s “Trinity” so important? It’s remindingus of something really fundamental – the three different ways that Christians believe thatwe can encounter God. First, there’s the belief that behind our wonderful universe, withall its complexity and frailty, with its beauty and intricacy and splendour and science andmathematics and music, there is a God, loving and creative, who cares about his worldand the creatures that live in it, and who longs for them to respond by being loving andcreative in return. But because all that might seem too enormous, too far away and impersonal, at the rightpoint in history God came to show us in human terms, in the way Jesus lived and diedand rose again, what that means for the way we should try to live. Jesus alsodemonstrated in practice that God’s love is limitless and generous, and that absolutelynothing can come between us and our Heavenly Father – unless we purposely choose tolet it.And so, thirdly – even today – God continues to work through human beings, helpingthem to be kinder, more loving, braver – whatever is needed, though the ups and downsof life – if they ask for his help in trying to make the world the kind of place he longs for itto be.Happy Trinity! With loveSue RoddWhitton Team Vicar

A Flyer in FlandersFlanders, the spiritual home of cycling is an iconic destination for cyclists. Thefamous Spring Classics races around Oudenaarde are notorious for theunpredictable Flandrian weather and the cobbles.

The cobbles are not the genteel thingsfound in the UK but big agriculturalchunks of granite with sizeable gapsbetween them. Cycling over them is veryhard, especially on the famous climbs.

The Flyers, Baydon’s very own cyclingclub, decided to take on that challengeand Thursday saw five flyers jammedinto a car laden with five bikes headingto Belgium.

On Friday morning The Flyers set off on the first day’s 110km into Flandrianweather. After more or less managing the Pattenberg and then the Koppenberg, both cobbled and up to 22%, a café stop was well earned.

The way back required a cobbled descent of a kilometre or so. The climb up hadbeen hard but the vibration at downhill speed was enough to cause RSI andconcussion!

A visit to the cycling museum was in order followed by self medication withBelgian beer to offset the effects of the shaking.

The Saturday ride included the IconicMuur van Geraardsbergen (21%). Muurmeans wall! However we made it to thetop for a team picture next to thefamous chapel.

Saturday’s celebration dinner wasexcellent Belgian Blue steak.

Sunday saw a brief ride to recap someof the nearby climbs and then it wasback to Blighty for five Baydon Flyerswith tired legs!

CAN YOU HELP?I have been organising the box collections inBaydon since taking over from Edith and JohnHollander in 1999. With knee and hip operations inearly 2004 and 2006 I am now finding it harder to dothese collections, and would love to find someone to take over from me. It is not tooonerous as the job consists of collecting the 23 boxes twice a year (Spring and Autumn),counting the money and sending a cheque off to Prospect. Someone who likes walkingor jogging could do it when they were out and about. Please contact me on 540283 ifyou are interested. If no one comes forward I shall be making the last collection thisSeptember.

radio about the Remount Depot at Russley Park.

Around a million horses were bought by Britain for military use during WW1. To supply thatnumber, horses had to be brought to the UK to supplement what could be found here.

In any transport system involving animals, steps have to be taken to care for them, and makethem ready for the next leg of their journey. Or, equally, injured horses would need treatmentand care before being returned to the front. That’s where Remount Depots come in. The

would be a ‘remount’ for the new rider.

In Wiltshire, the all-female depot at Russley Park near Baydon, played a vital role in supplyinghorses for the front. “Russley Park is an unusual example”, according to Dr Graham Winton

officers’ horses, around a hundred of them. The horses here would have been very fineanimals indeed.”

The fact that it was run by a staff of women was something of a jaw-dropper to Edwardian

horses”, who could “turn that knowledge to good account”.

Bus to NewburyDid you know that there is a bus that runs from

Baydon to Newbury at 10.18 am everySaturday?

It is now a regular service so no need to book

The bus will leave Baydon (bus stop on Aldbourne Road) at around10.18 am and take a slightly different route to Newbury.

It leaves Newbury at 1.30 pm for the return journey.

It may not be as quick, or follow such a direct route, as in the car but itcertainly beats finding a place to park – and of course it is free for thoseover sixty (providing you have your bus pass).

Tamzin grew up in Baydon, and visits from time to time to see her Dad. Tamzin hassafely arrived in the north east of England and is settling in step by step. Herneighbours are kind and friendly. After years of using only electric ovens, she hasmanaged to work out how to bake muffins in a gas oven without setting light to thepaper cases. She has a personal blog athttps://tamzinsblog.wordpress.com and an aid to non-native speakers of English at

“Cheaper by the Dozen”by Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey.

Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey recount theirchildhood, growing up in a family of twelve children, headed byparents Lillian Moller Gilbreth and Frank Bunker Gilbreth. Youmight suppose that such a family would have to be eitherchaotic and stressful, or run with rigid military discipline, but theGilbreths seem to have managed it all with (mostly) calmcompetence and good humour. Can you imagine taking sevenchildren on a cross-country train trip lasting several days? Thechildren seem to have grown up well-balanced, fun, responsible, loving, intelligent and capable, with space to

develop themselves as well as having clear boundaries, goals and expectationsregarding their behaviour and their contributions to the family.

Frank and Lillian Gilbreth were pioneers in the field of motion study andefficiency. When Frank died at 56, Lillian took on the mantle. They were alsovery keen on educating their children, not only to advance them in subjectstaught at school but in more wide-ranging skills. Maths games at the dinnertable resulted in the three-year-old knowing his 17 times table by overhearingwhat the others were doing. One summer, the Morse alphabet was painted allover the house, along with mnemonics to help learn it and “secret” messagesleading the decoder to find some little prize. A “family council” discussed issuesand a “purchasing committee” decided what to buy and found the best deal.Shirts are faster buttoned bottom to top than the other way around.

I found the book enjoyable and thought-provoking.
