in the goal of updating / reducing the fleet.

organizing equipment demos for the districts to
illustrate new product concepts in an effort to
improve the way we do business.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Communication:Encouraging Fleet / Design improvements to reduce downtime, repairs, cost, etc. How can we accomplish this?• Vendor communication• Demos / Plant Tours• Meetings with District Management (Buying into a new concept)• Communication with District mechanical engineers (current issues and how to improve)• SCDOT shop foreman discussion board
Vendors are detrimental to our success and they continue to aid SCDOT in product revision / improvement to help us meet our goals.

Communication with vendors has helped to create and improve existing designs to
provide products that would be SAFER and better suited for our operations and
the public. Communication is instrumental to our success.

SAFETY
Fleet Data:
• Accuracy of Information (Mileage, Hrs., Utilization, Cost)
• Navigating the Information
Fleet Data - Fleet Improvement (Data Evaluation) / Reduction:
• Fleet - Is there a need, Utilization, Buying, Renting, Contracting, Equipment Pools.
• Product Quality - Materials / components used, SAE / ISO / Codes, history of product
reliability & associated cost after sale.
• Design - examples include: hydraulics, cooling capabilities, weight, dimensions, structural
reinforcement, material selection, special coatings, electrical, etc.
• Support - Before and after sale (product info. & demos are great for highlighting what could
satisfy the DOT needs and after sale support is a key element for our Districts as they
perform the work and eventually do repairs on the equipment).
• Product Improvement - Constant need for improving our specifications without going to
extremes to prevent exponential cost increases associated with our request.
• (Replace) Heat & A/C Components - Approx. $1.79 Million
over 2yrs
• (Repair) Heat & A/C Components – Approx. $850,000
• Total over 2 years = $2.64 Million
• Compressor, A/C Condenser, Evaporator cost = $1.12 Million
Maintenance Cost for Districts (Heat & A/C Summary) :

Downtime associated to Glass repairs over 17 years = 6 months of downtime

• Repair & Replace Cost on related components = $440,266.88
• Average Backhoe cost = $92,000
• Examples of where money could be spent:
Use toward 15 new 4x4 trucks / 4 new backhoes w/attach. / 6 new compact loaders.
Question from Field Personnel: Do we need A/C on Backhoes & Mini Excavators (Broken Glass
& AC Component Failures)? Why do the new dump trucks have A/C issues?

Field Input:
Supply & Equipment has initiated a discussion board for the State, this allows
shop foreman, supervisors, engineers, etc. to share experiences with one another.
I have used this as a tool to illustrate new equipment, improved designs, highlight
issues with equipment, parts list and pricing. The objective is to open the lines of
communication between the Districts.
Same tool would be great for States
