president’s letterThis year has really flown by so far, and I want to thank everyone who has served the Association this year. I particularly want to thank all of the individuals who had a hand in putting on what I thought was one of our best Symposium ever. The event was filled with valuable information and great new products from our vendors. It once again proved that the private marketplace will always be better at innovation than the government.

As an association, we have had a good year, but we still face many challenges. We are hard at work with our state DOI and the Governor’s Office regarding state based exchanges and rate review procedures. We continue to talk to all of our elected officials in Washington regarding MLR and the value of the agent.

Each and every one of you plays a vital role in this Association, and it has never been more true than it is today. Throughout the remainder of the year we will be calling on you for your opin-ions on regulations and legislation, we will be calling on you to make phone calls and visits to your elected of-ficials, and we will be calling on you to help us build HUPAC so that we can help get the people elected to office who need to be there.

2010-2011 is just the start to our changing world, and it is going to require all of us to work together in order to survive and thrive. Please be on the lookout for ways you can help us get our message out.

NAHU is the nation’s premier association for the health insurance agent/broker, and without you, this would not be true. I thank you all for your membership and continued support, and I look forward to continuing working for each of you this year as your president, and for years to come.

Thank you,

Mark C. RileyAmerican Benefit Services, LLC

SCAHU Meets With Governor HaleySCAHU President Mark Riley and Board Member Eric Wells visited with Governor Haley’s staff on March 21 to talk about healthcare reform and how SCAHU can be a part of the Governor’s decision process in relation to healthcare reform. After the meeting, SCAHU was asked to provide a list of five SCAHU members who could serve on a Health Exchange Planning Committee. A copy of the letter that SCAHU sent to the Governor’s Office with the five names is included below:

March 23, 2011

Dear Governor Haley:

The South Carolina Association of Health Underwriters (SCAHU), which collectively represents more

than 4,000 state-licensed health insurance producers and service professionals, is pleased to submit

this written request for consideration of inclusion of one of our members on the South Carolina Health

Exchange Planning Committee. Every day, SCAHU members work to obtain insurance for clients who

are struggling to balance their desire to purchase high-quality and comprehensive health coverage with

the reality of rapidly escalating medical care costs. As such, one of SCAHU’s primary goals is to do

everything we can to promote access to affordable health insurance coverage.

SCAHU members help thousands of South Carolina consumers by guiding them through the com-

plexities of health insurance purchasing and enrollment, while ensuring they get the best policy at the

most affordable price. We seek to understand each personal situation to create recommendations that

complement a client’s financial and medical security needs. continued on page 11

The National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) represents more than 100,000 licensed health insurance agents, brokers, consultants and benefit professionals through more than 200 chapters across America. NAHU members service the health insurance needs of large and small employers as well as people seeking individual health insurance coverage.

NAHU’s legislative efforts strive to educate officials on both the federal and state levels about the health care system and the vital role of the health insurance agent as a consumer resource and advocate. Through a net-work of key contacts, NAHU cultivates relationships that allow members to clarify issues before bills are written and votes are taken. These relationships are strengthened through actions undertaken by the Health Underwriters Political Action Committee (HUPAC).

Certification programs, professional designation courses, online resources and conferences are just a few ways NAHU helps members develop professionally as well as personally. Local chapters also host regular meetings where continuing education opportunities are provided.

NAHU’s Capitol Conference: Health Care Reform Hits HomeKey administrators and policy-makers addressed more than 700 health insurance professionals at the National Association of Health Underwriters’ (NAHU) 21st Annual Capitol Conference. The conference, was held at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Wash-ington, DC, February 15-16. The conference tackled many of the issues of the implementation of the Patient Protection and Afford-able Care Act (PPACA), including exchanges, medical loss ratio and the economic impact of the new law.

LAHU Past President Rob Frazer said. “If you ever want to know how valuable NAHU is to our careers and industry, you should attend the NAHU Capital Confer-ence. I am now more committed to the work NAHU has done and is doing to protect us than ever before. Just wait until they finish

getting the MLR Repeal Coalition of Congressional leaders in place for the bill we helped write and you will realize that NAHU dues are well worth the investment.”

Key speakers included Director of Office of Insurance Exchanges Joel Ario, Michigan Representative Mike Rogers, Maryland Representative Andy Harris, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, Illinois Representative Peter Roskam, NAIC President and Iowa Insurance Commissioner Susan Voss, Arkansas Representative Mike Ross, New Jersey Representative Rob An-drews, Deputy Director for Insurance Programs Richard Popper, Wyoming Senator Mike Enzi, Georgia Representative Tom Price and Alaska Senator Mark Begich.

At NAHU’s Capitol Conference, health insurance agents and brokers com-municate their legislative agenda to congressional leaders. One of NAHU’s top advocacy goals is to minimize the potential health insurance cost

increases from the new law and to make sure that elected officials understand the critical role that health insurance agents, brokers and consultants play in our health care system.

“No one sees the true effects of health reform like the health insurance professionals who work directly with American employers and individual consumers looking for affordable health care,” said NAHU President Steven Selinsky. “This conference is an opportunity for an open dialogue between health insurance professionals and those tasked with implementing the new law.”
