Frank Lloyd Wright: Architecture of the Interior April 17 – June 13, 2020

Kinney-Lindstrom Gallery

This exhibition of high-quality reproduction drawings of interiors, furnishings, and household objects offers a view into Frank Lloyd Wright’s creative conception of the interior spaces of his houses. In Wright’s house designs, structure and ornament are one. Every feature of the house—from the overall structure, to the interior, down to the smallest details and objects—was conceived by Wright from the beginning as a single idea.

Wright’s approach to visual enrichment as “organic ornament” grew out of his belief that the visual character of a form—whether an entire house or a lampshade—is integral to the structure of the object. Exploring the distinctive visual, sensory, and expressive quality of Wright’s interiors, Frank Lloyd Wright: Architecture of the Interior reveals how the architect’s distinctive abstract and geometric structures permeate the spaces and objects within.

Frank Lloyd Wright: Architecture of the Interior was organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC, in cooperation with The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Scottsdale, AZ. It is sponsored locally by Mason City Clinic, the John K. & Luise V. Hanson Foundation and Bergland + Cram Architects.

Exhibitions

Stephen Estrada, Caribbean Light at Turks and Caicos, oil on linen, 2016

Stephen Estrada Winter Waves

through April 1, 2020 Kinney-Lindstrom Gallery

Stephen Estrada was born in Chicago in 1952. A year later, his father moved the family to Southern California to be closer to his extended family in Los Angeles and Mexico. Early experiences of surfing and hiking there instilled in Estrada a deep feeling for the beauty and power of the natural environment. His mother, a painter who had studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, encouraged his early interest in art. This exhibition features Estrada’s land-scapes and, through the artworks, his love of nature and artistic expression can be deeply felt.

When commenting on Estrada’s art work, commentator John Mendelsohn writes: “Estrada approaches his landscapes with a combination of acute observation and impassioned engagement. The sea, marshes, grasslands, and the cloud-filled sky all take on a heightened sense of drama in his deftly painted canvases. This artist’s work embodies an appreciation of nature’s vastness and energy, melded with a sense of tenderness, as if the world was beckoning us to know it intimately.”

This exhibition is sponsored by the David & Phyllis Murphy Charitable Foundation.

Kid Creations! 36th Annual School Art Exhibition

through April 18, 2020 Center Space Gallery

The Charles H. MacNider Art Museum sponsors an exhibition of student artwork each year with the annual School Art Exhibition to celebrate Youth Art Month (March). It honors both the imagination of students as well as the dedicated and resourceful work of art teachers in the schools. This year’s show features the artwork of elementary school students. This fun and creative exhibition features the future generation of artists and the works they are creating right now!

On Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. we will celebrate the students’ accomplishments and recognize their dedicated teachers. Award Certificates will be handed out at 1:30 p.m. A special thank you to Alpha Delta Kappa, an honor sorority for women in education, for sponsoring the reception.

Everyone is welcome to attend!
