General Information

The objectives of the MS programme is to give the student the opportunity to gain competence in an area that he/she wants to work professionally, to enable him/her to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for independent economic analysis and research, and to equip those who want to continue their studies at Ph.D. level with a firm grounding in theory.

Specific Admission Requirements

General admission requirements needed to start the programme are presented on the Internet web page of the Institute of Social Sciences (http://www.siirt.edu.tr or sbe.siirt.edu.tr)

Recognition of Prior Learning

Courses taken in other second-cycle programs, during the last five years, may be recognized depending on thorough examination of relevance and sufficiency of prior coursework by the executive committee of the Institute hosting the Program, as well as certification of the coursework.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The terms and condition of the admission to the Program is determined by the Institute of Social Sciences. Master’s degree programs can be conducted in thesis. The duration to complete the Master’s program with thesis study is four semesters.

For the program with thesis, the student has to; complete at least eight courses, one seminar and a thesis study. In addition, the cumulative credit must not be under 120 ECTS, the grades from the courses have to be Y, C or higher and a general cumulative grade point average of at least determined by the Institute of Social Sciences.

Profile of the Program The department of Economics educates people who are willing to do research and work on the various levels of economic life. The economic theory is given as an academic formation to students who are going to work in private or government sectors with the help of mathematics, statistics and econometrics. The education of economics contains two basic processes. The first is to teach economic principles and tools which will be used after graduating from university. In addition, the education of economics is to produce high quality labor force in changing global conditions. The second process is to develop systematic and independent thinking ability, which

will be helpful in every aspect of people’s life, and to give students academic formation in economic subjects.

Key Learning Outcomes

Upon the successfully completion of the program, the students will be able

1 to have a sound knowledge of the quantitative and qualitative methods that will help to examine the premises of different theories for an applied subject so that a contribution to solving current economic problems can be made.

2 to have the experience of writing, using software, and doing presentations in the newspapers, magazines, meetings, panels, and in equivalent virtual platforms (internet), in order to share their accumulated knowledge and problem solving ability acquired during their education.

3 to be able to participate in academic, professional, regional, and global networks and to utilize these networks efficiently.

4 to have adequate social responsibility and awareness with regards to the needs of the society and to have sufficient experience and qualifications to organize and support the activities to influence the social dynamics in line with the social goals.

5 to be able to integrate the knowledge and training acquired during the university education with personal and work experience and produce a synthesis of knowledge she requires.

6 to have the ability to evaluate his/her advance (post graduate) level educational needs and do necessary planning to fulfill those needs through the acquired capability to think analytically and critically.

7 to have sufficient practical and theoretical knowledge base in order to define the economic agents and their interaction both in the national and global level, to process economic data and to implement scientific research for development of economic policies.

8 to keep in mind that economics is a social science, to have the skills to integrate social dynamics into economic process both as an input and an output and to be open to theoretical innovations in this direction.

9 to associate accumulated knowledge acquired during the university education with historical and cultural qualities of the society and to convey it to different groups.

10 to be able to follow knowledge and change in economics and communicate with colleagues in a foreign language.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Public and private sector job opportunities for graduates of economics are quite high. They have opportunity to find a job in various ministries as inspectors, auditors, and specialist assistants. Additionally, state and privately owned banks, research institutions, local or international companies employ our graduates as well as educational and research institutions in recent years. Department graduates can take active roles in international markets and institutions and also can continue their academic career studying doctoral programs

Access to Further Studies

Graduates of the Programme can apply for third-cycle studies in many fields of social science.

and results of the 1950-1960 Demokrat Parti period and they evaluate the structural transition in the economy.

3. Students evaluate and interpret the structure of Turkish economy during Second World War, and economic policies implemented during this period. Moreover, they comprehend the transition of post-war period economic policies, reasons and process.

4. Students are aware of sector-specific issues for interpreting the latest developments and for making suggestions to overcome these issues.

5. Students know the Heritage of Turkish Republic by Ottoman Empire and falling of the Ottoman Empire, philosophy of liberal economic policies implemented during the first 10 years of the Republic.

6. Students analyze the reasons of transition in post-1960 planned development period, basic strategies, features and aims of development plans implemented. They also analyze and compare the economic transition process and economic growth during planned period to other periods.

7. Students evaluate the separation of statism and state intervention concepts, reasons of transition to statist industrialization, implementations and results of statist industrialization.

8. Students know the reasons and features of 2008 crisis and its effects on Turkey. In addition, they interpret and evaluate direct and indirect impacts of the crisis on global and Turkish economy and make estimations with possible

Moreover, students perceive economic crisis occurred early in 2000s caused by the postponed problems and method seeking for overcoming crisis.
