This is to let our beloved publishers know that the publication of The Bedanis currently being sustained by its savings from the first semester publicationfund. Obviously, we had to sacrifice the quality of the paper from Matt 60 toClass A Newsprint in order to stretch the remaining fund and produce moreissues. Although there is still enough money left to publish a few issues, ourexisting fund is finite and will eventually be exhausted. We are worried that incase the dialogue we are seeking from the administration fail, we might notbe able to publish in the future due to the lack of resources.

In line with this, we are calling our student-leaders to come to the paper’said in the name of free press by helping raise funds for the future issues.Indeed, this is an opportune moment for the student-leaders to step-up andshow the Bedan community their commitment in providing the best for thestudents through their support of the free and genuine campus press.

We are optimistic that the crisis The Bedan is facing will be resolved andthe atmosphere of freedom and democracy will be fully restored in no time. However, the paper which has served the students and the community for thepast 64 years, needs help. The Bedan has done the necessary adjustmentsto temporarily remedy this problem by limiting our spending to the publicationcost. The Bedan’s literary supplement The Spires, on the other hand, hasexpressed their support to the publication by delaying their publication untilthe end of the school year to accommodate the greater need of the studentsto be informed and enlightened through the student’s newspaper. However, they will continue to accept contributions and find other sources of funds tobe able to publish a literary folio before the end of the year.

Let us work together and save press freedom in San Beda for ourgeneration and the generations to come. With this, the students can beassured that this institution called The Bedan will be around to serve thestudents for another 65 years and more.

For the betterment of the students and democracy in San Beda.

Philosophy and Human Resource Development majorEduard Joseph Sapno reminded both students andadministrators the importance of dialogue and freedomduring his graduation speech last November 13 at theAbbey of Our Lady of Montserrat.

Bedans fear nooppressor

In his speech, he said, ‘we areBedans and we fear nooppressor ’ and added that ,“when oppressed, we fight backfor there is never a room foroppress ion in a Cathol icInstitution.”

Also, he reminded Bedans, through a quotation from RobertFrost; to continue their promiseof upholding the truth in theirdaily endeavors.

“‘The woods are lovely, darkand deep but I have promises tokeep. And miles to go before Isleep, and miles to go before I

sleep.’ Let us keep that promise,”he ended.

The occasion also witnessed, for the first time, summer andOctober graduates of the Collegeof Arts and Sc iences marchtogether in a single event sincetheir graduation ceremonieswere integrated by the schooladministration.

FORUM

Dr. Teresita P. PedrajasFor the past forty one years of my stay in this beloved institution, this is the first time that the

collection for The Bedan Publication has been cancelled via the memorandum of the College Deanwithout any reason.

The order of the CAS Administrationto stop the collection of fees for The Bedanis simply absurd. There appears to be noother motive but to silence The Bedan inthe light of the publication’s criticalcontents for the past three months. Alldecisions have a context and as such, itwould be helpful to think historical. Clearly, the decision came after a seriesof articles were published at the TheBedan during the first semester of 2007. Such articles proved to be critical ofblatant disregard of democratic processesin the campus and therefore, inimical toAdministration. It is not hard then toconclude that this order aims to close TheBedan and to mute campus press. It isabout student disempowerment.

Toreduce the matter to a trivial collectionissue is to obscure the truth. Truth is, theAdmin tries to dislocate The Bedanbecause the call to stop collection wasdone suddenly without any consultation. This move prevents all concerned partiesto prepare for the administrative change. The students do not have the machineryto collect publication fees yet. They arenot even ready for other mechanisms thatcould ensure the safety of fundscollected. These mechanisms include theopening of a bank account and institutinga system of check and balance. That isprecisely the reason why publication feesare collected simultaneously duringenrollment period. It is because thissystem ensures that the funds arecollected systematically and handledsafely. This is the most concretecontribution of any administration inpromoting freedom of expression andof the press. We all know that anypublication will cease to exist withoutfunding and the admin just did that.

What makes matters worse is the lackof democratic procedure. The Admin didnot even bother to discuss the matter withThe Bedan editor EJ Mangahas. Further,he did not learn about the order througha formal letter or memorandum. TheBedan got a copy of the memo of Fr.Anselm Manalastas only from anunofficial channel. Malinaw pa sa sikat ng

Response to the Bedan Crisis

I am very much disappointed becauseThe Bedan writers look forward to thegreat celebration of their 65th Anniversarythis school year!

As of now, I sympathize with thestudents for having to face their being shutup to express their rights to freedom, tocommunication, to a harmonious dialogue,to better understanding and to maintain apeaceful, harmonious and justcommunity.

I have been very proud of The Bedanwriters who have committed themselvesto a mission to inform the Bedans and theworld about the truth, the good things andclamors for improvement from thestudents, faculty members, and theadministration to make our institution areal vibrant developing community ofChristian professional leaders of ournation and the world.

I am aware of the Bedans who becameoutstanding writers in the BedanPublication like: the late Atty. RamonMitra, Sonny Aguirre, Alejo Villanueva,Atty. Rene Saguisag, Atty.Arthur Amansec,Ramon Medina, Oscar Contreras, Atty.Abelardo Cortez, Atty. Arthur Tugade,Atty. Dante Barbosa, Mr. AlbertAlmendralejo among others of the pastdecades; and Ramon Bangi, Erik Valencia,Alfred Tui, John David Pablo,TrishaOctaviano, Bryan Balco ,Carlo BenedictSison and EJ Mangahas ,among others forthis decade. I have observed the Bedansfrom various departments shined in theirwriting skill. Some graduates have beenintegrated in the national dailies. TheEditorial Boards were composed ofstudents from all majors : not merelyPhilosophy majors, but also from thepolitical science, English, economics, legalmanagement, financial management, accountancy, marketing, psychology andInstructional Technology.

All these years, I have observed howour Bedan writers tried their very best tobe cum professional student writers. Withall the PAASCU Accreditations, The BedanPublication made a major role inpresenting formal and legal documents asexhibits of the Student Activity Program, concretization of our vision-mission via providing the students the right to expresstheir opinions, ideas, observations andclamor for improvement of thecommunity. In fact, The Bedan Publicationhas also assisted the formation of the staffsof the College of Nursing Bedan Lamb, aswell as as College of Medicine. Among allthe student publications in San BedaCollege, the CAS Bedan Publicationpublished regularly its monthly paper, sometimes with special Sports Newsaccording to the needs of the time, like lastyear’s NCAA Games and Championship.I am also aware how The BedanPublication challenged the CAS Studentsto make mature decisions in the electionof the Student Councils via the publicationof the candidates’ profiles, perceptions ofBedan service. It has also alerted theofficials in the Student Council, FacultyClub and the administration to be moreconscious in the performance of theirroles, responsibilities and excellentservices to the students.

I know that The Bedan Publication hasbeen raking national awards from theCollege Editors’ Guild (CEG) andsometimes among different sectarian and

non- sectarian colleges and universitieswith school organs in the Philippines forfirst, second, third, or finalist in editorial,News writing, Cultural Section, Layout,Opinion Section, Sports and the uniqueDrummer Boy. The Bedan Writers enjoya great prestige among the schoolpapers’writers in the Philippines for theircourage to demonstrate their scientific, comprehensive writing competencies inmost of their issues. In fact, I observed thatthe group for the past three years, has beenvery professional in the staff recruitment, appointment of officers, wholistic developmental trainingprograms, critiquing for a balancedjournalism and relevance in theirpublications. I believe that The BedanPublication has met its avowed objectivesto inform the community about itsgenuine pulse, conscience, voices of both militant students and the masses. If andwhen some mistakes were seen likemisspelled words, wrong choice of words,subject-verb agreement, they were notanyhow alarming but the good thing wasthat they had the humility to acceptfeedbacks and tried their best to improvetheir crafts.

As a Social Science Professor, I deem itnecessary that this issue should beclearly understood by the students for theirrights to press freedom are being curtailedwithout due process! If we, the Bedans aregenuine Catholics, Christians, down toearth educators, then we have to open ourtwo-way communication lines with thestudents who deserved to learn what isright, what is true ,what is just, what to dogood because we want them to be treatedas persons with integrity, honor andconscience. We are assisting andencouraging them to be our next ChristianNational leaders!

Are we duty-bound to provide ourstudents the due process of making matureand responsible decisions and actions? Dowe want them to own the policies so thatthey will also follow such attitude andactions while they are student leaders andeventually as future professional leaderswherever they are? Do we want todemonstrate to them that we love our dearneighbors whom we see? our very ownstudents whom we are responsible to formas genuine Christian professionals?

For the past decades or the wholecentury, WE have been exposed toBenedictine monks , leaders who haveshown the Christian passion to developwhole persons _to be creative withfreedom that entails responsibility toself, neighbors and the community;Leaders who have demonstrated theirdeep spirituality via their thoughts andactions; Leaders who have shown thegenuine spirit of inspiring, serving, communicating with the heart and mind, supporting the strengths and improvingthe weaknesses of the students ,faculty, personnel with compassion; Leaders whohave walked the talk! I am prayingfervently to God, Our Lady of Montserrat,St. Benedict and St. Bede to make ourstudents live their faith courageously, wholeheartedly and sincerely, becausewe, the religious and lay adults are givingthe best examples of faith, love, hope, peaceand harmony. That the non-Catholics andnon-Christians in our midst will respectour religion and the people in it because

we sincerely live our faith via ourcommitted, compassionate, humble andloving relationships with one another inChrist.

Through traditions, all Bedans are veryproud of their prayer, work, study andfamily spirit in our community. Let usrestore and ignite this spirit in all aspectsof our academic community life!

God bless us!

An assault to CampusPress Freedom

Doesn’t it appear to be a premeditatedmurder of sort? Isn’t it outrightinsensitivity?

What makes the issue larger than lifeis the fact that it is just veryuncharacteristic of the Benedictine spiritof being conversational or dialogical. Itis just so disparate from what has becomethe seeming air of democracy that everyBedan had breathed in through theyears. But it appears like some thingshave to be disposed of because some people are pressed against the wall. Itbecomes important then to read betweenthe lines. To brand this as mere stoppageof The Bedan publication collection orthe closure of the Bedan is anunderstatement. There is a moreprofound reason that is at stake and ithas something to do with the curtailmentof campus press freedom.

Campus press freedom has long beenthe tradition of San Beda. It existed for 65years. This fact underscores a closerscrutiny as to why San Beda suddenlydecided to deviate from such a reputationby stopping the school’s publicationcollection. This decision, many believe,is rooted from the past three issueswherein the students criticized theimplementation of “policy.” Theimplementation of the uniform policywas strongly denounced as “highlyundemocratic.” The students likewiseexposed truths and half truths concerningthe Magna Carta of the Students whichAdmin branded as invalid and illegal.

Also in those issues, articles that tackleacademic, local and national issues, thatwere backed up by research, saw print. They delivered balanced articles byinterviewing the two sides from twocontending parties, which adheres to thejournalistic tenet of balanced reporting. It should not be taken against the studentsthough if some people do not makethemselves available for interview tobring out their side because sufficienteffort to present both sides would beenough. It has become practice too toaccommodate in The Bedan conflictingand contradicting reaction to any issuethat was presented. Afterall, these are

OPINION

The speaker seems to think that the issues, in theminds of the students, have died a natural death. Thefact that the students appear silent and passive of theissues surrounding them means not they haveforgotten. This silence is not a sign of surrender noris it a sign of defeat. Instead the silence of the studentsis a deafening statement which proclaims that theyare still in dissent to the policies forcefully imposedon them; their passiveness in activities, a symbol offrustration with the current administrators.

The CAS administration should evaluate theatmosphere in the college. The students are not happyand something needs to be done about this if we areto continue as one college in this academic year. It issaddening that the students need to experience thesedown times for the CAS.

Surely, the administration have done ways toappease the students and win them back but thethings they offer will never be enough for one cannotexpect a baby to stop crying for milk when given aniced tea.

The students, on the other hand, should regain theiroptimism to this institution. Trust in their student-leaders and respect to their elders are two essentialvirtues as Catholic-educated students that should notbe forgotten in these times of crises.

An administration that seem to be in denial of thetrue state of the college and some parties who seemto lose sight of what is essential in these times arethe glaring realities that confront us.

This is the sad state of the college today.Do not question the silence, listen to it and you will

hear the conscience of the students, the stakeholdersof this school. Address the root of the problem andnot the surface. Remain sober yet still critical. Do notlook, stare; do not just think, discern.

Not everything is what it seems.

Fact or Fiction?

Ang Dapat Mabatid ng mga Bedista

OPINION

Ambiguous, rash, aloof, comical, erroneous, ludicrous, and imprudentare just some of the words we candescribe people who do things withoutthinking. They tend to put meaning tosomething that they do not fullyunderstand. What makes it worse isthat they sometimes get away with itand convince others with theirunsupported claims. People then willbe inclined to believe their fallacies (orlies) and for all we know - especially inour culture where gossip-making is anever-ending trend - these falsehoodswill soon transform into truths becauseno one or no counter-argument arisesto rebut the same. But I will, at the bestof my intellect, try to prevent one falsepretense from becoming fact and thatis with regard to the wrong connotationabout honorarium.

First, let us try to identify thedenotative meaning of the word“honorarium.” According to thedictionary, an honorarium “is apayment in recognition of acts orprofessional services for which customor propriety forbids a price to be set.”Simply put, it is considered asrecognition for a job well done in theform of money. It is not the same assalary or wage, because in both cases, money is given to compensate theefforts or skills rendered. Incompensation, the one performing theservice expects money in return that isat par with the service he rendered. Forthe case of honorarium however, theone performing the service cannotexpect money equal to the value of hisservice. Oftentimes, honorarium isthought of as an expression of gratitudeby the person, group, or entity thatbenefited from the service. That is whatThe Bedan gives out to its deservingwriters - honoraria and not salaries.

Second, some people havequestioned the existence of thehonorarium in the publication. It wasdefinitely a hilarious query because

some of them knows it has beenexisting ever since. So it is safe toconclude that that person does notknow what he/she was receiving. Asthe one who handles the financialoperations of the organization, I wouldlike to stress that the process of the cashrequest for honorarium involves threeoffices: the Office of the Prefect forStudent Affairs, Office of the Dean, andthe accounting office. If one would saythat the expenditures for honorariumis questionable, then he/she must alsomean that the prefect of student affairs, dean, and the director of finance arealso questionable, because the cashrequests for honorarium are approvedby them ever since.

Third, many student publicationspractice the distribution of honorariumto its staff. Various student publicationsthat are members of the CollegeEditors Guild of the Philippines likethe UP Manila’s Manila Collegian, SBCAlabang’s The Bedan Herald, and ourvery own College of Nursing’s TheBedan Lamp, and other similarpublications have honorarium costsallotted in their budget schedule. Andeven in our own community, honorariaare being given and accepted bystudent organizations to theirmoderators or speakers for seminarsand conferences.

Fourth, many are wondering whythe practice of giving honorarium wasnot made public. Some would evenconclude that the reason why thehonorarium is not being disclosed tothe community is because we (themembers of the publication) arecorrupting it. But my dear Bedans, thatagain is a false notion. It has been thepractice and tradition of The Bedan notto openly disclose the existence of thehonorarium simply because we do notwant our staff to think of it as amotivation for writing. Thehonorarium was never and will neverbe used as a recruiting tool. Surely, youdo not want student-writers to be therejust for the money.

Fifth, people are actually questioningthe amount that is being given to thestaff. They are saying that the amountof the honorarium is too high orinappropriate. Going back to thedefinition of honorarium, it is simplya reward, which is relatively smallcompared to the service that has beenrendered. No amount can compensatethe stress, sacrifices, and risks of anymember of the publication. Eachmember’s dedication is unparalleledand cannot be measured by any formof currency here on Earth.

Sixth, many students are also askinghow the publication uses its funds. Theyare left with no clear idea regarding

the financial status of The Bedanbecause no financial statement has beenpublished since last year. On behalf ofthe entire organization, I would like toapologize for not being able to publishsuch financial statements due to spaceconstraints. If you would recall, ourJune issue did not even have a sportssection because of the limited space wehad to deal with. Though this shouldhave not been the case, we promise toright our wrong by assuring you, thestudents, that we will publish ourfinancial statements on a semestralbasis. The failure to publish the saiddocuments was simply a result ofcircumstance and not of any reasonsthat our most loved detractors are toohappy to speculate.

Lastly, I would like to rebut theargument that the reason why we arenot pleased by the cessation of thecollection for the publication fund isbecause we will have no more budgetfor the honorarium. On one hand, thememorandum regarding thepublication fund was issued in October. On the other hand, we have not beenreceiving any honorarium since ourAugust issue, which makes thatargument invalid.

Now that I have laid down mycontentions, it is time for you, myfriend, to decide whose arguments arecloser to the truth. After all, we are allrational beings and as college students,I think we can manage to distinguishfact from fiction, especially in thiscontext. But whatever your choice maybe, whether you decide in favor of usor not, we can assure you that ourloyalty will not falter and ourcommitment to the truth will alwaysremain firm as we deliver you newsthat will help you in becoming the realBedan you enrolled in this school tobe.

“No amount can compensate the stress, sacrifices, and risksof any member of the publication. Each member’s dedicationis unparalleled and cannot be measured by any form ofcurrency here on Earth.”

FEATURES

You are sitting inside the classroom for hours now, listening to every boring word your Statistics professor is sayingand jotting down unfamiliar notes which you do not even understand. Suddenly, your professor announced a quiz.Even though you tried with all your might to remember all those things you kept writing down, you still failed to pass thetest. You began to think that your effort in studying hard every night does not pay off.

Well, think again.Maybe it does. And maybe

Six Sigma can help you withthat.

The birth of Six SigmaSix Sigma is a set of

practices which originatedfrom the Motorola company. It is a system which improvesprocesses by eliminating thedefects of a product or serviceto its specification.Formulated by Bill Smith, anengineer of Motorolacompany in 1987, Six Sigmainvolves particular methodsnamely to define, measure, analyze, improve and control. It is designed to improve allprocesses of a product orservice to a better level byproducing at a defect levelbelow 3.4 defects per millionopportunities. A defect isdefined as an oddness of aproduct or services to itsspecifications.

The plan of the Motorolacompany proved to be asuccess after it reported over$17 billion savings as of 2006.After the saidaccomplishment of Motorola, several other companiesadopted the practice of SixSigma. These companiesinclude the Bank of America,Caterpillar, HoneywellInternational, and others.Nowadays, hundreds ofcountries around the world

Marjerie Ann RamosSix in the CitySix in the CitySix in the CitySix in the CitySix in the City

are already using Six Sigmaas a way of conductingbusiness operations.

DMAIC MethodologySix Sigma, in layman’s

term, means minimizing oferrors. A person who is anexpert in Six Sigma employsa systematic process whichfocuses on eliminatingdefects in a company productor services. It is a company-wide initiative whichpromises a breakthroughsuccess in businessoperations. Basically, itsprinciple states thatmanufacturing and businessprocesses are possible to bedefined, measured, analyzed, improved and controlled. This principle is calledDMAIC methodology. It isused to attain a defect-freeproduct or service.

The first step is to definethe business goals. In order toformulate an effectivestrategy, it is important todetermine which of thetargets should be prioritized. The next step is to measure. It is essential for companiesto know about the currentperformance of the businessas a significant element to beused for future comparisons.

Thirdly, companies analyzethe causes of defects andevaluate how all factors havebeen considered. Using theprevious analysis as thebasis, the causes must thenbe modified as part of thefourth step, which is toimprove. Lastly, thecontrolling process involveschecking if these problemsare being addressedaccordingly.

The challengeThere are different

positions a person may hold

in the Six Sigma method. Theentry-level Greenbeltsusually consist of employeesunder the guidance of a BlackBelt. These Black Belts areprofessionals who areassigned full-time positionsand are tasked to leadimprovement projects in acompany. After undergoingadditional training, theMaster Black Belt title may begranted to a practitioner whohave the authority to train andcoach Black Belts. The lastphase is the Champions’level, or the executiveshaving complete knowledgeabout the methods of SixSigma.

According to Dr. AntoninoArturo Manahan, facultymember of the College of Artsand Sciences of San BedaCollege, Six Sigma requires alegal process before a personcan be considered to teach itsprogram features andcontents.

“The most competentpersons to teach Six Sigma arethose who are practitionerswith licenses such as GreenBelt, Black Belt and MasterBelt,” Dr. Manahanexplained.

Further, he stated theimportance of statistics in thefield of Six Sigma. He alsosaid that going through therequired training and passingthe licensure exam are not

enough assurances to acquirea license.

“If you are good instatistics, Six Sigma is for you.But once you take thetraining, it is not a guaranteethat you will pass,” he said.

Minimizing errorsNothing in this world is

perfect. Failures are a naturalexperience, mistakes areunavoidable, and errorsalways turn up duringunexpected circumstances. But man, having the capacityto think, continues to searchfor ways of improving life.Human mind, up until now, strives hard to seek forperfection. Endless ideas andinventions will always comeup, resulting to theadvancement of technology.

One of these technologicaladvancement is the Six Sigmain the business world. Itpaved way for a better andmore efficient way ofbusiness performance.

The birth of Six Sigmaproves that there is alwaysroom for improvement. Thereis always an opportunity tominimize errors and a chanceto learn from mistakes.

healthy indicators of the diverse andvibrant academe and academic freedom.

It is also natural that people shouldnot expect the students to defendpositions which are contrary to theirinterests as a sector. On the contrary, people should expect that any cause, move or point of view that runs counterto students’ interests and concerns willbe lambasted, if not put to vigorousarguments in the student publication. This is so because the school paper is theonly venue where students could air theirgrievances, express their thoughts, advance a proposition FREELY. People, including Admin, who may, at any onepoint, find themselves at the losing endof any conflict or debate should behumble enough to accept defeat.

Silencing an opponent is clearly a sadretreat to the realm of the sour losers. Itbrings forth memories of the Marcosiantactic of silencing the opposition andemasculating, if not shutting down thepress.

If Rizal were alive today and aprofessor in San Beda, then he wouldprobably say this to us: “Kung gustoninyong manatili sa mag-aaral angpagmamahal sa katotohanan at paggalang samga namamahala, kailangang respetuhin ngmga namamahala ang karapatan sa malayangpamamahayag. Kung hindi, mapatahimik nyoman ang mga estudyante, ito’y temporaryolamang. Hahanapin at hahanapin nila ang likasnilang karapatan – ang magsalita atmagpahayag – at hahanapin nila ito sa kahitanong paraan.”
