PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Friends, Two years after Hurricane Harvey parts of our parish continue to limp along. Our physical

buildings and campus are up and running; but, many of our ministries continue to suffer from lack of participation. It’s as if the waters of Harvey washed away the desire to live true discipleship. I know that we have parishioners who are still trying to pull their lives together after the devastation of August 2017. I hope that our communal prayer and resources have aided in some way. There was such a big push to assist people immediately after the hurricane that it’s possible some folks were overlooked. I stated then that we would help and assist those who found themselves in need – and that still stands. But we also turned inward in order to rebuild our campus. Much energy went into reopening our campus. During the time period from the end of August 2017 to August 2018 our campus was basically closed to meetings and classes. We had very limited space and because of that most of our ministries went off campus to continue in the mission. Pastoral Council made an all-out effort to stay in touch with the co-chairs of the ministries to make sure they were still meeting and had what they needed in order to be efficient in the ministry. As is the case with a parish as large as ours, again, some got lost in the shuffle. Communication was difficult for those who were not actively involved. For some people, it was difficult enough to balance their own lives of reconstruction with a parish that had been “washed out.”

And so, now, two years later, we are focusing on rebuilding the ministries. We’ve limped this past year and realized that a few people cannot do all that God is calling us to do. This weekend we host our annual Stewardship Festival of Ministries. We are asking you to consider putting your talents, time and treasure to work for the sake of the Kingdom of God. As individuals, we are blessed by God, and have been entrusted with much to do His work. When a group of blessed individuals gather together for the sake of the Kingdom, whatever amount we have to offer will be multiplied beyond our imagination. What gift has God given you that can be shared? Remember that one lit candle in a darkened room brightens the whole space. You are the light of Christ. At baptism we were told to walk always as a child of the Light, for so indeed you are!

Please allow me to speak on behalf of one particular ministry. This past fiscal year we celebrated 70 funerals on our campus (remember there are 52 weeks in a year). This number does not include the numerous funerals the Deacons held at the various funeral homes in the area. Our average has been 48 funerals a year; but this past year has seen a large increase in number. Our Bereavement Meal Ministry offers meals after each funeral held on campus. Hours of preparation go into these meals – and, lately, they seem to be overlapping one another. They need your assistance to continue the ministry. When they begin calling for food, our own parishioners have said they’re too busy, have hung up on them, or have said now’s not a good time. (Does death ever come at a good time?) And yet, these ladies have literally cooked and prepared meals on behalf and in the name of the whole parish. The work they do to support a grieving family is priceless. Can’t you extend God’s love to these grieving families? Are we not a people for others?

That’s just one ministry. Another area is in our common life together at the Eucharistic Liturgy. We continually struggle to have a sufficient number of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, altar servers, hospitality ministers and musicians. At some Masses, we literally pull chalices and ciboria off the tray before they are brought to the altar during the preparation of the gifts. Also, this year, the Pastoral Council is endorsing and encouraging a stricter dress code for the liturgical ministers. In fact, a member of Council even said that if enough ministers are not properly dressed, then we should just stop offering Holy Communion under both species – and, serve only the consecrated hosts. That would cut our need for EMHCs down to 8 for each Mass. I would not want this option even though many of you go to Mass on vacation where that is the norm. If you are a fully initiated Catholic adult living a life in accord with the Eucharist, have you thought of serving your brothers and sisters who hunger for Christ? None of us is worthy to distribute Holy Communion and yet, God calls us to be His presence to one another. Mother Church sees the importance of us receiving Holy Communion under both species: The Sacred Bread and the Precious Blood.

These are just two examples. There is so much more in every aspect of parish life. With over 12,000 individual parishioners, surely there is something each of us could do for the sake of the Kingdom of God and our parish family. Even the youngest among us can serve the rest.

Cutting corners rarely winds up with satisfying results. Bakers know that if you use inferior ingredients, you can expect inferior outcomes. Thrown-together carpentry work tumbles apart in short order. Failing to warm up before exercise puts us at risk of injury. Doing things right takes more time and care, but it gets the job done. In moral living, the narrow gate is the most direct route to where we’re going. Avoid easy. Choose marvelous. TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 66:18-21; Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13; Luke 13:22-30 (123). “Strive to enter through the narrow gate.” Monday, Aug 26, 2019 Be steadfast in the face of hypocrisy Jesus had nothing good to say about hypocrites. He rebuked them often. So does Pope Francis, who recently said it was better to be an atheist than a hypocritical Catholic, calling out those who lead double lives of going to Mass and then exploiting others. It’s easy to look around and see people and institutions doing just that— including the church. It would be easy to turn your back on them altogether. But then wouldn’t you be letting hypocrisy easily win? Make it hard for hypocrites to take away the faith that is, by right of your Baptism, yours. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5, 8b-10; Matthew 23:13-22 (425). “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites.” Tuesday, Aug 27, 2019 MEMORIAL OF MONICA Persistence pays off A violent, unfaithful husband, a cranky mother-in-law, an immoral son—all in the same household. Monica could’ve been canonized simply for surviving. Instead, she pursued her unruly son Augustine from Africa to Rome to Milan when he was 29 (helicopter parenting, anyone?), fasted and wept over his lack of faith. Not quite the way young adults today are parented, but a bishop finally told her, “It’s impossible the son of so many tears should perish.” He converted, thrived, wrote brilliantly, and told her story in his Confessions. Today, compliment the efforts of a mother or son. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8; Matthew 23:23-26 (426). “Our coming to you was not in vain.” Wednesday, Aug 28, 2019 MEMORIAL OF AUGUSTINE, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Dig deeper Among the many works that the towering Saint Augustine is remembered for, his work On the Trinity is considered by many to be his masterpiece, his most significant contribution to the Western church. Yet a legend arose that as he struggled with his great work, he took a walk on the seashore and came across a young boy who said he was pouring all the ocean water into a small hole in the sand. Augustine replied ...

TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13; Matthew 23:27-32 (427). “On the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.” Thursday, Aug 29, 2019 MEMORIAL OF THE PASSION OF JOHN THE BAPTIST Be careful what you promise According to the gospel accounts of the beheading of John the Baptist, Herod immediately regretted the promise he made to Salome that led to John’s beheading. Whether John met his death for this reason or simply because Herod regarded him as a threat and wanted him out of the way, the story serves as a cautionary tale to think twice before you promise to fulfill the wishes of another. Would you be willing to violate your internal sense of right or wrong or your conscience in order to fulfill a promise? If not, be slow to make promises without first checking your conscience. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 3:7-13 (428); Mark 6:17-29 (634). “When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.” Friday, Aug 30, 2019 Leave your light on for Christ A Catholic church is never completely dark—as long as the Blessed Sacrament is present. You’ll always see at least a small red flicker before the tabernacle, while it contains the Eucharist, the Body of Christ. The tradition goes back to the Book of Exodus, when God told Moses to perpetually burn a lamp filled with pure oil in the Tabernacle. Thousands of years later, Christ is always there, burning with a light and love that never goes out. Likewise keep the flame for him in your soul steadfast and bright. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Matthew 25:1-13 (429). “The wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.” Saturday, Aug 31, 2019 Tame your tongue Sometimes our daily readings get down to brass tacks. “Don’t be a busybody” seems to be the blunt message in Paul's advice to the Thessalonians. It’s not an ethereal command to do noble deeds; rather it’s the kind of practical advice that makes life in the Christian community (or any community) work. Pope Francis frequently passes along similar wisdom. Put today’s citation to immediate use by keeping your silence the next time you’re tempted to disparage a neighbor, relative, or coworker. TODAY'S READINGS: 1 Thessalonians 4:9-11; Matthew 25:14-30 (430). “Nevertheless we urge you, brothers and sisters, to progress even more, and to aspire to live a tranquil life, to mind your own affairs.” Invest just

Will you bring the light of Christ to an incarcerated teen in need of hope? Strong Persons of Faith Needed

Adults are needed to visit teens detained and awaiting trial at the downtown Juvenile

Justice Center. Training and support is provided. This is a wonderful ministry for

people who work downtown who can offer one hour per week in the evening to

do this Work of Mercy. For our Lord said,

Loving Choice Pregnancy Center

A “Year of the Family” Project!

The foundation is being laid for a Catholic based pregnancy advocacy center to serve women in our area

who are or think they might be pregnant. The location is about ½ mile south of Louetta on Kuykendahl Drive, with a target opening date of

October 1st.

A parent meeting is scheduled for September 10 and 11 at 7:00

p.m. in Sexton Hall. Only one parent needs to attend one of

these meetings to receive information, child’s assigned

room, and the Faith Formation schedule.

I can tell you from my personal mission trips to the “little school” that the hopes and dreams of the children through education continues to bear much fruit. PARISH WIDE EVENT HIGHLIGHT PARISH WIDE EVENT HIGHLIGHT

COLUMNA DEL PÁRROCO Queridos amigos, Dos años han pasado desde el huracán Harvey y partes de nuestra parroquia continúan cojeando. Nuestros edificios físicos y campus están en funcionamiento; pero, muchos de nuestros ministerios continúan sufriendo la falta de participación humana. Es como si las aguas de Harvey hubiesen lavado el deseo de vivir un verdadero discipulado. Sé que tenemos feligreses que todavía intentan recomponer sus vidas después de la devastación de agosto del 2017. Espero que nuestra oración comunitaria y nuestros recursos les hayan ayudado de alguna manera. Hubo un impulso tan grande para ayudar a las personas inmediatamente después del huracán que es posible que se haya pasado por alto a algunas personas. Dije entonces que ayudaríamos y asistiríamos a quienes se encontraran en necesidad, y eso sigue en pie. Pero también nos enfocamos hacia nosotros como parroquia para poder reconstruir nuestro campus. Se invirtió mucha energía en la reapertura de nuestro campus. Durante el período que abarca finales de agosto de 2017 y agosto de 2018, nuestro campus estuvo básicamente cerrado a reuniones y clases. Teníamos un espacio muy limitado y debido a eso la mayoría de nuestros ministerios salieron del campus para continuar en la misión. El Consejo Pastoral hizo un esfuerzo total para mantenerse en contacto con los copresidentes de los ministerios para asegurarse de que todavía se reunían y tenían lo que necesitaban para ser eficientes en el ministerio. Como es el caso con una parroquia tan grande como la nuestra, una vez más, algunos se perdieron en la confusión. La comunicación fue difícil para aquellos que no participaron activamente. Para algunas personas, fue bastante difícil equilibrar sus propias vidas de reconstrucción con una parroquia que había sido "arrasada". Y es así, como ahora, dos años después, nos estamos concentrando en la reconstrucción de los ministerios. Cojeamos el año pasado y nos dimos cuenta de que con solo algunas personas no se puede hacer todo lo que Dios nos está llamando a hacer. Este fin de semana organizamos nuestro Festival anual de Ministerios de La Corresponsabilidad. Les pedimos que consideren poner sus talentos, tiempo y tesoros a trabajar por el bienestar del Reino de Dios. Como individuos, somos bendecidos por Dios y se nos ha confiado mucho para hacer su obra. Cuando un grupo de personas bendecidas se reúnen por el bien del Reino, cualquier cantidad que tengamos para ofrecer se multiplicará más allá de nuestra imaginación. ¿Qué regalo les ha dado Dios que se puede compartir? Recuerden que una vela encendida en una habitación oscura ilumina todo el espacio. Eres la luz de Cristo. En el bautismo se nos dijo que camináramos siempre como hijos de la Luz, ¡porque así es! Permítanme hablar en nombre de un ministerio en particular. El año fiscal pasado celebramos 70 funerales en nuestro campus (recuerden que hay 52 semanas en un año). Este número no incluye los numerosos funerales que los diáconos celebraron en las diversas funerarias de la zona. Nuestro promedio ha sido de 48 funerales al año; pero el año pasado hemos visto un gran aumento en este número. Nuestro ministerio de asistencia para personas que han perdido un ser querido ofrece comida/alimentos después de cada funeral celebrado en nuestro campus. Las horas de preparación dedicadas a estas comidas últimamente parecen sobreponerse entre sí. Este ministerio necesita de su ayuda para continuar esta labor tan especial. Cuando comienzan a pedir donaciones de comida, nuestros propios feligreses han dicho que están demasiado ocupados, les han colgado o han dicho que ahora no es un buen momento. (¿Alguna vez llega la muerte en un buen momento?) Y, sin embargo, estas mujeres literalmente han cocinado y preparado comidas en nombre de toda la parroquia. El trabajo que hacen para mantener a una familia adolorida no tiene precio. ¿No pueden extender el amor de Dios a estas familias? ¿No somos un pueblo para los demás? Ese es solo un ministerio. Otra área está en nuestra vida común juntos en la Liturgia Eucarística. Continuamente luchamos por tener un número suficiente de Ministros Extraordinarios de la Sagrada Comunión, monaguillos, ministros de hospitalidad y músicos. En algunas misas, literalmente sacamos cálices y ciborio/copón de la bandeja antes de llevarlos al altar durante la preparación de los regalos. Además, este año, el Consejo Pastoral respalda y exhorta un código de vestimenta más estricto para los ministros litúrgicos. De hecho, un miembro del Consejo incluso dijo que, si suficientes ministros no están vestidos adecuadamente, entonces deberíamos dejar de ofrecer la Sagrada Comunión bajo ambas especies y servir solo las hostias consagrados. Eso reduciría nuestra necesidad de EMHC a 8 para cada misa. No quisiera esta opción a pesar de que muchos de ustedes van a misa de vacaciones donde esa es la norma. Si eres un adulto católico totalmente iniciado que vive una vida de acuerdo con la Eucaristía, ¿has pensado en servir a tus hermanos y hermanas que tienen hambre de Cristo? Ninguno de nosotros es digno de distribuir la Sagrada Comunión y, sin embargo, Dios nos llama a ser su presencia el uno al otro. La Iglesia Madre ve la importancia de que recibamos la Sagrada Comunión bajo ambas especies: el Pan Sagrado y la Sangre Preciosa. Estos son solo dos ejemplos. Hay mucho más en cada aspecto de la vida parroquial. Con más de 12,000 feligreses individuales, seguramente hay algo que cada uno de nosotros podría hacer por el bien del Reino de Dios y nuestra familia parroquial.
