SERVICE for the WORSHIP of GOD
June 18, 2017 The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
THE WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Joe Reggin
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP
PRELUDE Two Hymns from The Sacred Harp arr. Donald Hustad
"I Know that My Redeemer Lives"
"Sweet Rivers of Redeeming Love"
Paul Honaker, Organist
CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 71)
Leader: In your righteousness deliver and rescue us, O Lord. Incline your ear to us and save us for you are our fortress.
People: We give praise to God, for God has always been, and always shall be, our hope and our trust.
Leader: Do not be far from us, O God, and make haste to help us, for we have depended upon you throughout the course of our lives.
People: The power of your righteousness reaches the highest heaven, O God, so we proclaim your mercy to all the generations to come.
*THE HYMN OF PRAISE: #331 God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand NATIONAL HYMN
*THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION: In every age and generation, O God, you have placed before us a choice: Life or Death. In every age and generation, you have called us, have pleaded with us, and have empowered us, to choose life. In Christ, you offer your divine-self that we might be free to choose life and the joy of living. Most generous and gracious God, we confess that in spite of your loving efforts, we continue to make inappropriate choices. From the schoolyard to the boardroom, to the realm of international relations, we all too quickly use violence to settle our disputes and differences. We are harsh in our judgments of others and of ourselves. We are competitive to the point where we sometimes justify the means we use by the ends we obtain. Dear God, come and rescue us from ourselves. Help us to make new choices. Help us to find peace with one another and to celebrate our lives, rather than judge them. Help us to see in all people the image of the Christ who gives his life for the sake of our living in joy; for it is in Christ’s holy name that we pray. Amen.
*THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Romans 12)
Leader: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds.
People: In this way we will discern what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Leader: For by the grace given to us, we need not think of ourselves too highly for we are each members of the one body of Christ.
People: We come in sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith God has given, to proclaim that, as the body of Christ, we are, each one, blessed and forgiven by our Lord. Amen.
The flowers are given by Connie & Franklin Perkins.
The flowers are given by
Chris & Lisa Shepherd in honor of their daughter’s 8th birthday.

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD
TIME WITH OUR CHILDREN Joe Reggin
(No Children's Worship)
THE FIRST LESSON: 1 Corinthians 12:1-13 Pew Bible, p. 164
Leader: This is the word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
ANTHEM: Sometimes I Hear God's Music Joseph Martin
Chancel Choir, Christine Smith, Conductor
THE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
THE SECOND LESSON: Luke 4:14-30 Pew Bible, p. 61
Leader: This is the word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
SERMON: "Jesus: The Prophet of Disturbing Interpretation of Scripture"
*SAYING WHAT WE BELIEVE: Jesus' involvement in the human condition is God’s involvement. His compassion for all kinds of people is God's compassion. His demand for justice, truth, and faithfulness is God's demand. His willingness to suffer rejection is God's willingness. Jesus' love for the very people who reject him is God's love. We know that God is not confined to the story we can tell. The story itself tells us God works his sovereign will among all peoples of the earth. We believe God works beyond our imagining throughout the universe. We must not love anyone or anything more than we love God. God created and rules in love. God created all the worlds that are and upholds and rules everything. We affirm that the universe exists by the power of God's Word and Spirit. God has chosen to give it reality out of the love we have come to know in Christ. God still works through the processes that shape and change the earth and the living things upon it. We acknowledge God's care and control in the regularity of the universe as well as in apparently random happenings. There is no event from which God is absent and his ultimate purpose in all events is just and loving. That purpose embraces our choices and will surely be accomplished. The Creator works in all things toward the new creation that is promised in Christ. [A Declaration of Faith (1§3:14-19 & §5:34-39 & 2§1:1-9)]
*THE HYMN OF REFLECTION: #326 For All the Saints (Vs. 1-3) SINE NOMINE

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.

A LITANY OF PARTING
One: The time has come for us to part.
Although we have traveled together, we now
take different roads as God calls us to different
ministries in our mutual journey of faith and
life.
Many: Though we take different roads, we
continue our mutual journeys of life
together in following Christ’s call in
ministry.
One: I give thanks to God for you, for the
experiences I have had with you, for the
portion of my journey, which I have shared
with you, and for that portion of ministry, we
have together shared.
Many: We give thanks to God for the
journey shared with you and for the ways in
which we have shared in building God’s
Kingdom in this place.
One: I give thanks to God that I was called to
share with you in this time of change and
transition; to help you to prepare the way for a
new leader. May you continue in your call to
prepare the way for God’s call to a Pastor who
will share in building new ministries,
according to God’s call in Jesus, our Christ.
Many: We give thanks to God for the gift of
a new Pastor, whom God will soon give to
us. We give thanks for one who will share
with us the gifts of God’s Word and
Sacrament. One who will walk with us in
love and fellowship and, with our Ruling
Elders, guide us in serving Christ, as we
continue to share in Christ’s call of
ministry. May God find us worthy of such
generous gifts as these.

have had with you, the times of sorrow and of

of failure and of success and use these for my
own growth and in future ministry with others.
I ask God to consecrate this time we have
shared that it will be a source of strength and
of life to me and to all I will meet in my on-
going journey of faith and life in Jesus, our
Christ.
Many: We pledge to use the experiences we
have shared with you, the times of conflict
and of peace, the times of anxiety and of
hope, of failure and success, of laughter and
tears and use them to strengthen the bonds
of friendship and fellowship that are now
being forged anew within this Family of
Faith. We now ask God to consecrate the
time we have shared, so that we might walk
with our new Pastor, and one another, in
the way of Jesus, our Christ. May God’s
Spirit guide and strengthen us in the
leadership of our new Pastor and our
Ruling Elders; that we will always seek to
witness to the light of Christ in this place
called Salisbury Presbyterian Church and
throughout the world of God’s creation.
One: May God bless and keep you, may God
cause the face of divinity to shine upon you,
may God give you peace and bless you with
every joy of life on this day and always.
Many: May God bless you on your way and
strengthen you in the joy of ministry to
which God is now calling you. May God
guide you as you journey in the way of faith
and life that we share in Jesus, our Christ.
ALL: AMEN!
