Eric Lissner grew up in Santa Ana, California where he attended El Modena High School. He ran track and field in high school, and began his ultimate Frisbee career as a freshman at UCLA in 2008. Four years of college and six seasons of playing with the ultimate Frisbee club team paid off when a professional ultimate Frisbee team came to Los Angeles.

In 2014, he was the captain and first player signed to play for the Los Angeles Aviators (LAAviators.com). Virtually uninjured throughout his career, 2015 brought a catastrophic fracture of a clavicle caused by impact from a diving catch. After an open reduction internal fixation surgery, the surgeon recommended Coury & Buehler to restore function to his throwing shoulder.

Eric worked with Laura Wong, PT, DPT to improve shoulder stability, range of motion, and strength. Eric remembers, “During my first visit to CBPT, I couldn’t lift my right arm above shoulder height.”

He immediately embraced therapy because he wanted to return to the field as quickly as possible. Therapy was enjoyable

because he also loves learning about biomechanics. “I was told that I was a dream patient because I loved doing the exercises.”

Eric is now able to train for and compete in the professional ultimate Frisbee season without

pain. “My shoulder function is restored to greater than pre-injury levels. I recommend CBPT to my friends that need PT.”

for all of those who ran with us in the BREA 8K this year! We had a fantastic team and a whole lot of fun! Check out our newsroom for the slideshow with

WORKPLACE ERGONOMICS 101By Sharon Ho, PT, DPT

Preventative measures can be taken when you feel you have been sitting at your desk for too long. Set an alarm and stand up every 1-2 hours. Give yourself a chance to take a restroom break, grab some water, or stretch out. Have any more questions? I’d love to hear from you! Email me at [email protected]!

Many working individuals spend about 6-10 hours a day at their desk in front of the computer. Being in a prolonged position can cause shortened muscles and chronic pain if not addressed. Having proper alignment at the desk can help prevent poor posture, degenerative joint issues, and early muscle fatigue. As a physical therapist, I encourage my patients to be mindful of their sitting posture at work, and change up their workplace ergonomics if needed to better manage their pain and/or stiffness.

The following are a couple of tips to think about the next time you’re sitting at your desk.

• Head: head and neck stays in a neutral position with the chin parallel to the ground• Eyes: when looking forward, the top of the computer monitor should be at eye level

to decrease neck extension when looking at the computer monitor.• Shoulders: shoulders should be aligned with the ear and hips• Elbows: should be rested on an arm rest at a 90 deg angle. But if no armrest is

provided, it should hang relaxed by the waist• Wrist: in neutral position on the keyboard with fingers slightly curled to type• Back: back is rested against the chair with a slight curvature of the lumbar spine• Hips: hips at 90 deg or hips slightly tilted forward to decrease backward tilting of

hips when sitting. A backward rotated hip (your base of support) causes a slouched posture from the lower back, ribs, and neck/spine

• Knees: bent at 90 deg• Foot/Ankles: at 90 deg with contact to the floor or on a foot rest

SHARON is a physical therapist at our Brea clinic. She stays active by working out, hiking, and running. Other personal hobbies include traveling, cooking (and eating), and watching scary movies.

• Keep objects that are used daily and consistently (ie: phone, mouse, stapler) within arms distance away.

• Keyboard & mouse should be located near the body when elbow is placed at 90 deg.

• Telephone should be easy to reach when extending elbow without over-stretching arm. Consider switching sides to reach for the phone to manage any current shoulder or neck issues.

• If your job consists of long duration on the phone, an earpiece may be recommended to help decrease stresses and stain to neck and shoulder.

• The best possible position is to face the corner as opposed to keyboarding off to the side. This promotes increased neck rotation, trunk rotation, or trunk sidebend.

• Since a keyboard might be difficult to place on the corner edge, using a keyboard tray will allow for proper neutral spine position while facing the computer monitor screen.

• Dual monitor screens are being used more often to help productivity in the office. It increases screen space to allow for multiple applications to be open all at once.

• If there is a main screen that is utilized the most, place that screen directly in front of you, and the second screen closely to the side. However, if both screens are used equally, then your eyes should be looking at the center of where both screens meet.

• Both monitors should be equal in size, height, and distance from the eyes. This will help to limit the amount of cervical rotation, flexion, and extension of the neck.

Helping You Help Yourself Seminar: JOINT PAIN!

GINGER CHICKEN STIR FRYBy Nicholas DeMonaco, PT, DPT

Do you have a favorite recipe or food tip you’d like to share?

Email [email protected]

One of my favorite dinners to make is stir-fry, purely because it is simple to make and can be a very healthy option. The minimal cook time allows the vegetables to maintain most of their nutrients and it is an easy way to add an assortment of different vegetables. I have tweaked this basic recipe so many different ways to add variety, however the basic recipe is as follows.

MARINADE• 1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce• ½ cup vegetable broth (OR chicken/

beef broth or water)• 3 Tbsp rice vinegar• 2 Tsp ground ginger• ¼ Tsp freshly ground black pepper

MAKING THE MARINADE1. Add all marinade ingredients to a

bowl and whisk to combine. 2. Pour marinade into a large bowl or

ziplock bag, then add in chicken and gently toss to combine.

3. Cover/seal and refrigerate for at least 15 min.

MAKING THE STIR FRY1. Once chicken has marinated, heat

olive oil in a large saute pan over medium-high heat. Remove chicken with a slotted spoon from the bag, reserving the marinade, and add to saute pan w/ garlic. Saute for about 6-8 minutes or until chicken is cooked all the way through, stirring occasionally. Remove chicken with a slotted spoon and set aside.

2. Add mushrooms, baby bok choy, and reserve marinade to saute pan and stir to combine. Cook for 3-4 minutes until bok choy has wilted and mushrooms have cooked through, stirring regularly so that sauce does not burn. Add in the chicken and toss to combine.

3. Serve immediately over brown rice or quinoa and garnish with green onions.

INGREDIENTS• 1lb boneless, skinless chicken breast

sliced in strips and cut crosswise• 2 garlic cloves, minced• 2 Tbsp olive oil• 8 oz baby Portobello mushrooms• 4 oz shitake mushrooms• 3 cups chopped baby bok choy• 2 green onions, sliced
